  • Bio:

I grew up with this group of yahoos. We always canoed, hiked, camped and adventured together. We had plans to backpack around the country. Life got in the way with families and what. Thirty-four years later, we are beginning to relive our childhood and are gearing up to realize our original ambitions.

Big Agnes Crater Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down w/ Mummy Pad

January 7, 2009

The specs show the "Temp Rating" as -5F. Is that a misprint? I assumed because it is dubbed "15 Degree Down" that the temp rating would be 15F.I tend to be cold, when not moving, due to low heart rate and blood pressure. I currently have a 20F rated (Slumberjack) synthetic fill bag that I froze my rear off in when only 32F. I was very disappointed. I don't want to spend this much and freeze my behind again.I have looked around and for the money/weight ratio, this bag seems promising. The design seems to make sense, and with the minimal weight, I plan to include a closed cell pad (7oz.) with it. All would be lighter than my current bag assuming the combination of the included pad and bag weight of 2lbs. 2oz. is correct. Thanks!

Good Backpack Stove.

Primus EtaExpress Stove

Primus EtaExpress Stove

Rating for this product: 4 December 8, 2008

I have used this stove in the field and it has performed well. Lightweight, easy to pack, set-up, and use. No messes, no fuel spills. Boils quickly. Flame control adjusts from blow torch to slow simmer. Various sized canisters allows scalability to type of activity. Stove is not limited to one type of pot. Skillet/lid is an efficient and functional attribute.

The only downside is the effect cold has on the gas cannisters resulting in slower boil times.

Couple with Primus EtaExpress

GSI Outdoor Ultralight Nesting Bowl and Mug

GSI Outdoor Ultralight Nesting Bowl and Mug

Rating for this product: 4 December 8, 2008

I bought this expressly to couple with the Primus EtaExpress stove. The stove pot will nest into the bowls and with the sipper lid on top or bottom, all will store in the Primus stuff sack. The foam band will insulate the hand from hot contents. The sipper lid helps keep the contents at temperature and keeps debris out - appreciated while drinking hot coffee on a cold and windy morning. Best of all it is relatively lightweight.
