I boulder indoor at Climb Time in Blue Ash, and every now and then I'll work some routes at RockQuest in Sharonville with my wife Kelli. We do the Eden park wall when it's nice out. But we are always looking for a reason to go to the Red.

Metolius Screw-On Handholds - 10 Pack

November 27, 2008

Screw on "crimps" are smaller holds that are used to build strength. Most clubhouse/jungle gyms use holds called "juggs". They are a lot bigger and easier to wrap your hand around. Juggs would probably be better for a five year old, unless you wish do develop a serious climber. (here are some nice mini-jugs from metolius http://www.backcountry.com/store/MET0253/Metolius-Mini-Jug-Hold-Set-5-Pack.html

DAKINE EZ Traveler Rolling Bag - 5500cu in. - Women's

November 24, 2008

It looks a little big to be used as a carry-on. Most carry-on is supposed to be around 22"x14"x9". But I have seen some strange things brought on-board. It kinda' depends on who is working and how crowded the plane is. (We got married in Hawaii, and my wife brought her wedding gown on along with our two allowable carry-ons. The plane was nearly empty, and the flight crew was all women that understood her problem)

The Tech Specs say max burn time is 120 hours. Max usually means they have it on the lowest setting to get the longest time. The "boost" setting only lasts for 20 seconds, so if you continuously use the "boost" I am sure the battery life would be significantly shorter.

All the straps on this harness are doubled back automatically. One thing to watch for is that they are tightened properly, since a lot of people forget to check that. I've also found that these get tangled easily.-----The leg loops are doubled back already, but you do have to double back the waist buckle yourself. This is the Momentum AL (adjustable leg) not the Momentum SA (speed adjust)

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness

November 22, 2008

As your climbing career progresses, you'll find that most climbers avoid walking as much as possible. That said, this harness should be fine for walking. I wear a Black Diamond Chaos and never had a problem with chafing.----I own a Momentum AL, and have had no discomfort while wearing this harness. I am pretty lazy so I don't even take it off on the hike from one crag to the next. AL means Adjustable Leg, so you can loosen these if they give you a problem while walking. Just snug them up before you climb again.

Black Diamond Rocklock Screwgate Carabiner

November 22, 2008

The gate clearance is just under an inch. It's hard to tell for sure without knowing more about you application and the dimensions of the piece of metal, but you might want to look into the Omega Pacific Jake (it has a diagonal opening gate that let's it fit a lot of gear that other biners won't take).Yes. It will fit. I tried it on a piece that is just over an inch wide and nearly a quarter inch thick. It fits through the gate without problem.

I need more of these now!

Black Diamond Positron Carabiner

Black Diamond Positron Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

Since I got these, every time I reach for a biner I'm looking for a Positron. I don't think I can own enough of them. I don't understand why the companies still make the old style gates. The keylock makes it snag free so they are perfect for all types of climbing. They don't get hung up on webbing or bolts so cleaning is a lot easier while you are still pumped. They are light (however not the lightest) for the people trying to maximize every ounce.
I highly recommend these to people that are trying to figure out what to buy. You will not be disappointed with these. I am ordering more, and I am also going to order a couple of the Positron locking biners too.

Great draw.

Black Diamond FreeWire Quickdraw

Black Diamond FreeWire Quickdraw

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2008

I got some of these a while back and I love them. I replaced the bolt end biners with Positrons and they clip and clean easier now. I am not a big fan of the new tiny Dynex dogbones, so it is a real relief to me that I can still get a good 'draw with the older, fatter, more stable nylon sling.

This is an excellent combination at an amazing price. I recommend them to people trying to save a few bucks while still getting a good quality product from a reputable company, Black Diamond.

I still like the nylon

Black Diamond Dogbones

Black Diamond Dogbones

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2008

It appears that Black Diamond is beginning to use the 10mm Dynex more and more. They aren't using the nylon dogbones in their quickdraw combinations anymore. I have some of the nylon ones as well as some of the Dynex. I feel that the wider slightly stiffer nylon ones are more stable when clipping the rope into the bottom biner, because the Dynex slings tend to twist more easily. They are both rated at 22kn so you can't go wrong with either one. Rubber inserts on the rope end are a must to have on all 'draws. They hold the biner firmly in proper orientation and are available on both the Dynex and nylon. Overall-Great product from a great company.

Positrons are great.

Black Diamond Positron Quickdraw

Black Diamond Positron Quickdraw

Rating for this product: 4 November 17, 2008

I love the Positron biners, and I am buying more to replace the wire gates on the bolt end of my other quickdraws. This 'draw is an excellent combination from Black Diamond. The keylock gates on both ends make for nearly effortless clipping and cleaning. I have a little trouble getting used to the lightweight 10mm Dynex sling however. It could be in my head, but it feels like the older fatter slings held everything more steady while clipping the rope. Now I am using wiregates on the rope end because it is more comfortable for me. (Black Diamond has a quickdraw like that too, the Hotwire, which I will buy next time)

CAMP USA Starlight Helmet

November 15, 2008

some UIAA certified and ANSI certified helmets are certified under CE en12492 (like this one) as in the case of many Petzl sport and commercial helmets. This makes it seem as though they are compatible. But I do not work for UIAA or ANSI (or OSHA). There are slight differences in testing (8kn vs 10kn) and my understanding is that if it is certified for the workplace then it is safe for the workplace, but not vice versa. So my answer is a definite NO. Safety is important. Do not mix work and play. My quickdraws are not going to be used to tie down ladders, and I will not use my rope to tie down furniture in a truck. I will only use what is certified for use at work while I'm at work. Petzl does sell some ANSI certified helmets (the Vertex line) that have all the nice features of climbing helmets. You should be safe there. (I'm not liable for your safety)

Metolius Super Chalk Eco Ball

November 15, 2008

As I understand, it is the same chalk which is dyed so it blends in better with the rock. It is considered "eco" because it comes in a ball, and the ball causes you use less chalk because you only get chalk on the parts of the hand it touches. You also waste a lot less when you accidentally drop your bag. (no more white piles at the crag)

Revolution Climbing, Inc. Jib Combo Set - 40 piece

November 14, 2008

I believe what it means is there is an assortment of small hand holds, and small foot jibs. This is so a climber can train harder while at home. To the small hand of a child it might be huge, while it is probably a three finger crimp for me. Small foot jibs will make you concentrate on foot work. They seem to be pretty small because they are all screw on's.

Evolv Elektra Climbing Shoe - Women's

Evolv Elektra Climbing Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 3, 2008

We got a pair of these for my wife so we could start climbing outside. (no more stinky gym rentals) They are perfect. Her normal shoe size is between 8 to 8.5, and we bought these in size 7.5. They fit tight enough that she takes them off after each climb, but they are still comfortable while climbing. The velcro closures are way better than laces. They smear great, and edge awesome. The rubber is soft and sticky, but not so soft that sloppy footwork removes lots of material. They are perfect for beginners, seasoned climbers, or Vegan climbers of any experience level. I use the larger volume Defy from Evolv, and if we ever wear these out, we will get more of the same again. We love them.

Okay, I found the answer myself...Yes it has leather. It says "metal free" which I imagine means the heavy metals that are used in the tanning process. Metolius Ropemaster Rope Bag - 1224 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2008

The Metolius RopeMaster does exactly what it's supposed to. It carries the rope. All rope bags need to have a tarp, and this one does. It also has different colored tie in points (nice) so it is easier to remember which end is on top. Other than that, nothing fancy. The drawstring doesn't work correctly on mine, but it's an easy fix. It appears that it should last a good while. But for the price, it seems like it's a good deal.

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe

Evolv Defy Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2008

I bought a pair of these shoes elsewhere about a year ago, and decided I need to let people know about them. I bought them because I couldn't stand the rentals at the gym, and instantly knew i made a good buy. I was just beginning to climb, and now I boulder in the same pair at least once a week. I do mostly gym routes, and have had no problem with holes in the toes or the soles coming unglued. I take care to make sure they are well aired out and dry after using them (synthetic shoes supposedly stink) and they stay in my living room without any offending odors.

My normal shoes are 11's and after trying on a few pairs, I bought a pair of the Defy's in size 11. They curl my toes, and make walking slightly difficult, but they are not uncomfortable. I now have callouses on the top of my big toes from rubbing, but I never got any blisters.

They are clearly the most popular shoe at my gym, and they just re-did the rentals to use all Defy's. These shoes are totally synthetic for the Vegan community. They are great for beginners, or for veterans who want a more comfortable shoe.

Thanks.

Beal Edlinger II 10.2mm Rope DO NOT USE

September 13, 2008

Dry ropes are more aimed at mountaineering or ice climbing where they could be dragged through ice and snow without being affected. A wet rope gets heavy fast, and they lose integrity. As I understand it, a dry treated rope will also help keep dirt out of the fibers which should help it last a little longer. (but you should keep your rope out of the dirt anyways)I have also heard that it can make the rope a bit "slicker" which would help it slide through the quick draws more easily while sport/trad climbing.hope it helps
