Warmer than Kincos.

Backcountry.com Stoic Inbounds Glove - Men's

Backcountry.com Stoic Inbounds Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 1, 2009

Warmer (wool vs. Kinco's Heatkeep synthetic) and more dexterous (precurved fingers and corrugated leather versus Kinco's flat fit) than either of the Kinco 901 or the Kinco 1927KW. Used in 10F weather and I was warm whereas with Kincos I would have needed liners. ***HOWEVER***: I suspect that these gloves will not be as durable as the Kinco 901 given their thinner leather, use of synthetics, and thinner stitching. I would not use these as a winter work glove.

However, know that Sno Seal and other wax-based products will make the gloves stiffer, especially in the cold.

Backcountry.com Stoic Inbounds Glove - Men's

March 31, 2009

It might be heresy, but the Inbounds really isn't a real snow work glove - but then again the BD Patrol, the Cloudveil Troller, the Marmot Exum, and the Hestra Patrol aren't either.

All of them will rip apart under heavy use. The Inbounds however IS the best compromise glove between a dextrous, warm, but rather delicate glove like the Hestra Patrol and a not-as-warm, but completely bombproof can-stop-a-chainsaw-with-my-hands-and-pick-up-flaming-logs-and-get-grease-all-over-them-and-I-don't-care, but-I-can't-bend-my-fingers Kinco 901 true winter work glove. I would rate it as more durable than all the other options I've listed save the Kinco 901. These are a good price compared to the other mainstream options I've listed from Marmot, BD, Cloudveil, Hestra, et. al.

With short fingers, I'd get the L. But be aware the cuff is quite narrow and will be a squeeze to get on and off with your broad palm.

Simple. Warm. Lots of pockets.

The North Face Foundation Bib - Men's

The North Face Foundation Bib - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 18, 2009

I love 'em. 32 waist, 34 inseam and the Large fits perfectly. Pockets are in all the right places and are secure. Cuffs don't seem to be getting slashed up by edges like some other pants. And they're warm but the leg vents work well to cool off when hiking.

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic Handheld Water Purifier

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Classic Handheld Water Purifier

Rating for this product: 5 January 26, 2009

Used it a total of 3 months on the road. Never got sick. Some tips, no particular order:
1. Buy one large silk neckerchief, 2 Nalgene HDPE narrowmouth bottles, 4 high-capacity AA NiMH batteries, and a wall charger. The neckerchief is your filter for "floaty stuff" and the Steripen snaps into the mouth of the Nalgenes like it was made for it, providing a watertight seal. Shake instead of stir, and no spilled water! Buy all this and never have to find bottled water in rural China again!
2. Dry it thoroughly before storing! Otherwise you'll get scale (limestone) buildup between the sensor electrodes and the pen will refuse to start.
3. With NiMH 2500mAh batteries, you can purify about 40 liters before a recharge.
4. Note that the Steripen DOES NOT remove harmful chemicals like oil or gasoline from water! To fill your water bottle safely from a source with oil or other petrochemicals floating on the top, submerge the bottle first under the water mouth down, wipe off the mouth underwater, and turn the bottle right side up to fill. Cap the bottle underwater and bring it back out.

The helmet gold standard.

Giro 2008 G10 MX Helmet

Giro 2008 G10 MX Helmet

Rating for this product: 5 January 26, 2009

Has everything. Adjustable ventilation, adjustable head size, removable washable liner and earpads, bomber visor. Helmet plastic is a little soft so you'll get some scratches crashing through trees. Runs a little big, if you're at the border between sizes get one size down.

Smith Threshold Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Smith Threshold Interchangeable Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 January 26, 2009

Polarized lenses are excellent for use on the water. Earpieces are bendable to fit your head better, which for me is the best feature of these! Earpieces wear through eventually (years) but Smith will send you new ones free. Yellow lenses work well for shooting and evening biking.

Snow Peak GigaPower Stove, Titanium Auto Ignition

Snow Peak GigaPower Stove, Titanium Auto Ignition

Rating for this product: 5 January 26, 2009

Tiny little Japanese stove that heats really well! 1 cup of water takes about a minute to boil. If you're doing a long trip, bring matches and sandpaper as all piezo igniters have the same problem - they build up carbon on the tip and don't spark as well. So sand off that carbon and it should spark just fine. Un-documented second function: if you ever want to wake yourself up in the morning without coffee, just touch your thumb with the spark igniter and hit the button. YEOW!
