I'm 5'8, 160 and have been wearing the Mediums for several years. They still fit perfectly, and provide great support, so I wouldn't go smaller.

To be on the safe side, I would wash it using a sport-detergent (e.g. SportWash) made for synthetics. Warm water should be fine. Don't use fabric softener or dryer sheets, though, as they tend to reduce the moisture-absorbing qualities of these synthetics.
