The Scree pant is a wonderful backcountry ski pant, but really isn't weather resistant or warm enough for colder days alpine skiing. You might check out Marmot's Women's Davos pant. It is a great fitting softshell ski pant with a film backer which will keep out wind and wetness.

The weight of the Zeus is 14.8 oz versus 1 lb 9 oz for the Hunker Down, so the Zeus is quite a bit lighter. This is due to it having a lighter weight shell and higher fill power down (800 vs 650) As you said, the Hunker might hold up to abrasion or tears a bit better, but at the cost of more weight and bulk. Either way you should be warm. Hope this helps.

Marmot classifies the Aura as a 3 season tent. The reason is if you use a tent with large amounts of mesh you can get snow blowing inside during gusty conditions. If you're in a snow free area, that should not be a problem. As Thomas said, a tent doesn't provide much in the way of insulation. Hope that helps.

Good Questions. You are correct, the main difference is the Atom is using a higher fill power (850 vs 800) making it slightly lighter and a bit more durable. With these warmer weather bags there is less of an difference in weights between 800 and 850 since they use less fill. Overall, they are both great bags and it's hard to go wrong with either one.

Actually, the Driclime windshirt has been a polyester fabric for at least the last 7 years. The difference better the spring 2011 version and the fall 2010 version is the the fabric got a tiny bit lighter, going from 1.7 oz to 1.5 oz. (Same fabric that Marmot uses on the Trailwind Hoody) That change made the garment lighter by 1 oz. Also the lining is a bit softer feeling. Hope that helps.

Marmot makes a variety of pants with a variety of weights of fabrics. Lighter weight fabrics make for a lighter, more packable garment, but sacrifice a bit in terms of durability. The Palisades pants have a fairly burly 4.2 oz Gore-tex fabric and so are skewed toward the durable side and they should work great for your needs. Hope this helps.

Changes for 2010-2011 model are: bellows increase stiffness about 15% and will be similar in stiffness to the 75 mm Voodoo, forward lean increases to 25+ degrees, and the L-pads in the liner increase in thickness by 1.5 mm for a more snug heel hold. New model can be recognized by gold forward lean mechanism, 09-10 model was silver. The shell breaks at even sizes so 29 and 29.5 are the same shell, 30 jumps up one shell size. As you stated, both the Oracle and the Aegis use Marmot's Membrain Strata fabric. The main differences are that the Oracle features a hood that both zips off and rolls into the collar, while the Aegis hood only rolls into the collar. The Oracle also features stretch fabric across the shoulder for easier movement and is an inch and quarter longer. Hope that helps

Great questions Laura. First, let me say that the 1 year warranty is a typo, all Marmot products come with a lifetime warranty. Regarding Gore-tex Pac-lite vs Membrain Strata (Crystalline Jacket) vs Precip, it really does come down to long term durability. Gore-tex is still the gold standard, giving the best combination of waterproofness, breathability and durability. Other fabrics may initially offer better breathability, but none offer the longterm durability of Gore-tex. Membrain Strata used in the Crystalline is a laminate like Gore-tex and also offers great breathability and waterproofness but won't last quite as long as Gore-tex in the most demanding conditions. It is a lighter and less expensive option, however. Precip is a coating and offers a good combination of waterproofness, breathability, and afford-ability, but with lesser long term durability than the other technologies. Hope that helps.

Actually, the better comparison to the Pinnacle is the Helium bag, which is also rated to 15F. The Lithium is rated to zero degrees. Biggest difference between the Pinnacle and the Helium is fill power (800 vs 850), weight (2 lb 8 oz vs 2 lbs 2 oz) construction and price. The Pinnacle uses a slightly heavier and more rugged baffle material that will stand up to more abuse and has a more elaborate footbox baffle system, that again, will stand up to more abuse. This adds a bit of weight, but it you plan to use your bag often it will last longer. The Helium is built to be as light as possible and so Marmot opted for a slightly lighter baffle material and a simpler footbox. In a nutshell, the Pinnacle is best for hard users and the Helium is best for ounce counters. Hope that helps.

The Crystalline is a shell, and as such, gives protection from wind and moisture, but like all shells, doesn't provide much in the way of insulation. The insulation is provided by the layers worn underneath. So to answer your question, at 40F, if you're standing still or moving at a slow pace you might need more than a baselayer underneath. At higher levels of effort, just a baselayer should be fine.

Yes, the Highland is a waterproof/breathable jacket. It uses Marmot's new Membrain Strata fabric which is 20,000 mm waterproof and 20,000 g/24hrs breathable. This is a step up in breathability from Marmot's Precip fabric and is quite close in breathability to Gore-Tex. The Highland is intended as a city and travel rain jacket, but would work fine for hiking and canoeing if you are looking for full coverage.

Yes, there is a DWR (Durable Water Repellent finish) on all Gore-Tex shells. It keeps the face fabric from wetting out, which can decrease breathability. Marmot uses a long lasting fluorine based resin. Machine washing warm with a powdered detergent and then tumble drying medium until completely dry will help maintain the water repellent finsh.

This is Garmonts stiffest AT boot. They call it an AT flex rating of 130. This flex rating is only relative to other AT boots in Garmont's line-up and shouldn't be compared to other manufactures boots. In comparison the Radium is a AT 120. Changes from last year are: Main difference is the liner. The 2009-2010 version has Garmont's new Rapid liner. Denser, non thermoformable foam on the sole helps prevent pack out. Also, it has more toe room, due to thinner and elastic foam in the toes. Difference in the shell are new buckles and new colors.

Fill weight on the Ama Dablam is 125 grams of 800 fill power down. Center front is 24" and center back is 29.5" and total weight is 18 ozs. With respect to the Fitz Roy Hoody, it a bit of a apples to oranges comparison, as the Ama is designed as an ultralight, packable hoody great for less cold conditions and layering. A better comparison might be to the Marmot Greenland Baffled Jacket which is much, much warmer. (300 grams 800 fill down)

Main difference is the liner. The 2009-2010 version has Garmont's new Rapid liner. Denser, non thermoformable foam on the sole helps prevent pack out. Also, it has more toe room, due to thinner and elastic foam in the toes. Difference in the shell are new buckles and new colors.

I can't comment on the other 2, but having used the Leadville a ton, I can say it offers a great combination of breathablity and weather protection. The windstopper front and back keep the weather out, while the breathable side panels do a great job dumping heat and moisture when you're working hard. I also like how stretchy and lightweight it is. Not the warmest soft shell out there, but it works great for aerobic uses as well as layering.

Yes, it can be washed safely and in fact, if you do it right, washing can help rejuvenate the down. First use a high quality down soap like those made by Nikwax and Granger's. Then use a large front loading commercial washing machine, not your home job which has an agitator, which can rip out the baffles. After washing use a large capacity commercial dryer on low or no heat and plan on spending a good portion of the day drying it. As it starts to dry add a couple tennis balls to the dryer to break up the down clumps or just stop every once in a while and pull them a part by hand. When you pull the wet bag from the washer be sure to scoop it up rather than pull as the heavy wet down could tear out a baffle.

All Marmot bags are EN tested. (EN stands for European Norm and is a testing procedure using a heated copper mannequin and 20 sensors to measure heat loss) EN testing for the Helium give these results: a rating of 16.3 F for the lowest temp an average man could have a comfortable night sleep, and a comfort rating of 27 F for an average woman to have a comfortable sleep (women tend to sleep colder than men) So I would say if you are a warm sleeper the Helium should be good down to temps between 16-25 F. If you tend to sleep colder maybe 25-35 F for a comfortable night sleep. Check out the Marmot website for more info on EN testing.

It depends on what temps you'll be in and how active you will be in those temps. The trick to layering is to add and subtract layers as the temps and your activity change. My basic system in wet winter weather is base layer, mid weight fleece or breathable soft shell and then waterproof/breathable shell. If it's really cold might add a vest or substitute a light down for the fleece layer.

Garmont doesn't recommend using the vibram sole with an alpine binding. The friction from the rubber sole will interfere with the release of the binding. If your alpine binging has enough height adjustment you might get it to fit, but it won't give you a consistent release at the DIN it is set for. Use the flat alpine sole for alpine bindings.

There is a velcro volume adjustment on the back of the hood as well as an adjustable draw cord that goes around the opening so you should be able to adjust it to fit your head. It also has a decent size visor.

It uses cocona technology to reduce the smell factor. Basically, it's activated carbon mixed in with the polyester that adsorbs the smell and releases it when it's washed. The great thing is that is actually gets better the more you wash it because more pores in the carbon open up. It might be a little warm for Texas summers, but the cocona also absorbs UV radiation.

This style is not zip in compatible. It will layer nicely under a Tamarack shell, however.

The Zeus has a coil zip and won't zip into the Basitione. However, it should layer nicely under the Basitione shell. Length wise the Zeus is 24 and 1/4" center front and 27 and 1/4" center back in a medium. The Basitione is 1" longer in the front and 2" longer in the back.

It is one of Marmot's warmer softshells, however, it is water and wind resistant, not water and wind proof, so you would need to add a shell on really gusty or wet days. It is nice and toasty for everyday use and also very breathable.

I'm 5'9" and 160 and wear a medium. The cut is slightly roomy so a med should work for you.

The width of the Halo 6 is 10 feet and the length is 10 feet so that translates to 100 sq feet. Marmot worked hard to keep the sidewalls as vertical as possible to give it maximum usable interior space.

You can send it back to Marmot and they should take care of you. In the future one thing that will really help keep this from happening is to wash your garment regularly. Body oils and plain old fashion dirt can cause the waterproof membranes to wear out prematurely. Just wash it with a powdered detergent and no fabric softners and tumble dry low.

Now that's the million dollar question. Breathability is a hard thing to measure as there are many different tests and certain types of fabrics give better results with one test than another and manufacture naturally pick the test that gives the best results for their particular fabric. Having used most of the waterproof/breathable fabrics, my 1-10 rating with 1 being an old school non-breathable coated rain shell and 10 being a gore pro shell, would be 6 for Precip.

You could go either way. If you're planning on using it when it's really cold and wearing some layers underneath I would go with a small. If you want it to fit a little closer and not have layers than you could get by with an XS.

The Nano has higher pack pockets which will work better with a waist belt. As far as lengths, the mica is 22 and 3/4" center front and 28" center back in a a med while the nano is similar at 23" cf and 28 cb. If you're looking for something longer you might check out Marmot's Oracle which is 24 and 1/2 in front and 30 in back. It's updated with Marmot's new Membrain Strata and weighs 18 ozs in a med.

The Bastione should be plenty warm enough for the top of Snowbird. It has a quilted synthetic liner that is warmer and lighter than 200 weight fleece. It is also versatile because the liner is removable for warmer weather.
