MSR E-Bivy

MSR E-Bivy

Rating for this product: 4 August 17, 2009

I just checked this bivy weight on the MSR website, it is 9oz (minimum) and 10oz packed. Not 7oz.

Total Performance - Fully tested

Mountain Hardwear Quark Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Quark Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 4, 2009

Took it to a fully testing mountaineering trip - It performed brilliantly.
On the valley, this super lightweight jacket kept me dry through hours of pouring rain. Waterproof pitzips take care of the breathability. Crossing a creek got me into chest deep water - this shell dries as quick as you'd imagine. Above the snow line, the jacket's hood worked so well with the helmet and shields you from the wind nicely. A cautionary note: Although well constructed, it is an uber-light shell - trees and shrubs will shred this shell. It's more on the fragile side, the price you pay for going light. I simply love this shell.

Highly Waterproof, Nice to wear

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 4, 2009

As good as is expensive. I took this Jacket for glacier travel and ice climbing in New Zealand. After full day
walking and climbing on the pouring rain I was impressed with this
highly waterproof softshell. The Pitzips and the helmet compatible
hood work seamlessly. This jacket keeps you happy while you swinging your axes and wear your harness. Colours and looks however, differ a lot from the picture - The Arc'teryx guys "retouch" these photos excessively. I have not tested it in cold weather though.

Such a smart pack - Technically oriented

Black Diamond Predator 50 Backpack - 2929-3052cu in

Black Diamond Predator 50 Backpack - 2929-3052cu in

Rating for this product: 4 January 4, 2009

Downsides with this pack: Sizes are quite weird - I'm just 5'7" and the S/M is way too SMALL for me! the M/L fits me perfect (Bad news for people taller than me = Most people). The pack is (understandably) Zero water resistant so as you use a dry-sack liner, the side access (for which the zipper SHOULD have been WP) becomes useless. The upside is basically everything else: It is well designed, lightweight and comfortable (considering it's a technical rather than a backpacker's pack). The ice-axe loops/pockets system is just brilliant. The helmet holder is brilliant. The crampons pouch is brilliant - you know the adjective for this pack...

One advice: Seal its seams

Black Diamond Winter Bivy Sack

Black Diamond Winter Bivy Sack

Rating for this product: 4 January 4, 2009

This Bivy sack does what it's meant to, nothing more. It is amazingly light and is designed to keep you warm and dry while sleeping mostly ABOVE the snow line. i.e. when it is cold and snowy and rain is not your biggest concern. The biggest advantage is its highly breathable fabric (my experience, I see some controversy here), which is priceless as I use a down sleeping bag. Its disadvantage are the almost "transparent to water" seams, hence I strongly recommend sealing the seams for true water resistant (NOT waterproofness) If your are after water proof, Gore-Tex, and the like, this is not your sack.

Great Value - Behind the best though

Backcountry.com Titanium Cookset - 700ml Pot /Spork

Backcountry.com Titanium Cookset - 700ml Pot /Spork

Rating for this product: 3 January 4, 2009

The spork is beautiful, love it.
The pot is pretty as well, lightweight, well built and the best price for a titanium pot. Its design however, could be easily improved: It is too narrow and tall - its proportions make the pot not so heat-efficient and prone to burn the food at bottom while cooking the rest. The lid could fit snugger to make draining easy. Bottom line: I like it and I'm happy to have it but you'll struggle if it is your cooking pot. Great for boiling water and use it as a mug/bowl. It's clearly behind the (overly priced) MSR Titan Titanium Kettle.

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's

January 3, 2009

In China mate. If it helps, in my opinion it's a pretty high quality jacket and I'm happy with it. However it's my first Arc'teryx jacket so I can't comment about the quality comparison between Canada v China made jackets.
