Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Jacket - Men's

December 30, 2010

check out the Mountain Hardware Epic Jacket.

just got it 3 days ago in time for the major Cali storm... lots and lots of rain.

unlike goretex which requires a special "washing" (when you need to wash your funk out) with a special detergent and "follow up spray", the Epic is a WATERPROOF shell...no if's and's or but's. None of this "breathable" crap where you have to tend to the jacket to keep its waterproofness while maintaining a comfortable breathable nature.

the Epic shell is extremely lightweight, due to it being a single layer of material *backed* by a waterproof plastic/rubber/nylon coating. It is able to compress into a small sandwich ziplock bag (maybe even smaller) to help with packing on trips. This coating on the inside ensures that there isn't a chance of water getting in... maybe if you ripped the jacket. The seams are taped and there are pit-zips to help with venting. The burnt orange colourway is awesome on the Epic... with a "ripstop" style crosshatches and a dark satin orange finish, the Epic was perfect for me. Check it out!

In my opinion, there is no *waterproof&breathable* with the chance of water getting in. Pit zips do so much more in terms of vapor transport than a "breathable waterproof" material... unless you want to pay 3-6 times the price of a VERY good, simple shell.

Nikwax TX-Direct Spray-On

Nikwax TX-Direct Spray-On

Rating for this product: 4 January 19, 2010

it works as described... i wash with no detergent or techwash, take it (my northface apex softshell) right out after the spin cycle is finished... and while still damp wet, spray the whole jacket once to twice with 30 minute intervals in between and then dry it for 15 mins on delicate cycle after its been hung all night.

the only problem is.... it smells of sour milk. it's a sour smelling liquid to begin with, but since the softshell absorbs is like neoprene, the jacket now reeks of this smell. People agree with me that it is def not a b.o. smell, but there is certainly a hint of sourness. This is mot likely due to how much i put on, so beware, use LIGHT thin coats... not thick, single layer sprays. The thing is it says it redoes 3-4 jackets i think, and there is still much left for 3 more (i've dont it once before), which makes 5.... so i dont know why it smells like this. (and no it didnt smell like this before or after the washing machine thank you very much haha)

overall, great product, but take care of the amount you put on.

love this glove

Pearl Izumi PRO Full Finger Glove

Pearl Izumi PRO Full Finger Glove

Rating for this product: 5 September 19, 2008

they may look heavy, sweaty, clunky things, but man do these feel good! After 3-4 hour rides, i can't believe i have gloves on. The gel insert takes away a lot of vibration, mesh along the tops of the fingers and wrist take care of any hot mugginess. There are latex linings on the thumbs, and 1st 2 fingers to give good grip also. The nice finisher is a patch of microfleece on each thumb-length for smooth snot sweat wiping. Weight weenies and hardcore xc racers, don't be offended by the looks, after all, how can a fingerless glove protect your fingers when you fall? Well, this glove has taken a few for the skin on my fingers and palms and i thank them for it!.

Overall, i can't believe that i waited this long to get a glove this good!!
