Stomping Grounds:
Canada- Algonquin Park and the Missinabi River (Ontario), Colonge-Noir Rivers (Quebec) -
Bio:
I live in Connecticut, born in RI. I generally spend my summers canoe tripping in Algonquin Park in Ontario. Last summer I spent about 40 days in Alaska- ice climbing, sea-kayaking and backpacking. I love ice climbing and want to learn more about it (and climbing in general). My dream is to someday climb some real mountains (read: Everest). For now though I am happy doing what I can with the time I have. Which is not much cause of school. Oh well, only a few years left.

Arc'teryx Hercules Hooded Fleece Jacket - Men's
October 18, 2009
I know people frown upon the Arcteryx Easyrider for being just what its name implies, but I think that the Easyrider is an excellent substitute for the Hercules. The Easyrider is stretchy, warm and very weather resistant. It will wet out before a comparably priced Windstopper jacket (I have the MH Dragon) but actually beads water better and is nearly as windproof. On summer trips this jacket is an uber-fleece for the camp site. If you do not need a hood or the added breathability of the Hurcules (note: I have never overheated or gotten the Easyrider clammy), the Easyrider is an excellent choice.

Arc'teryx Venta SV Softshell Jacket - Men's
May 27, 2009
I have both windstopper and powershield softshells and definitely prefer Windstopper most of the time- but there are situations when a Powershield jacket will outperform windstopper. If you are going to be doing anything really high exertion powershield is a bit more breathable because it is not 100% windproof (my powershield jacket- an arcteryx easyrider, I know not very technical- has thick fleece on the inside but despite the added insulation still breathes as well as my MH Dragon made from windstopper). It is important to remember that windstopper is a membrane based fabric so that it will be far more waterproof over extended periods than powershield. So unless you plan to forgo bringing a hard shell completely (not recommended) either jacket will serve you well.

Scarpa Kailash GTX Hiking Boot - Men's
March 6, 2009
Hey guys-Does anybody have any experience using these boots on canoe trips (or similar)? What I really need is a boot that is supportive enough for carrying 30-40lbs pack and a 90lbs canoe to boot (sorry for that awful pun) for relatively short bursts of portaging (up to ~6km). That is the easy part of my search. I need to find a boot that dries quickly. Fancy gore tex and event waterproof membranes do not help if you are standing in a river up to your knees and putting on cold wet boots as I am sure you know is the most miserable feeling ever. Do you guys think it worth it to forgo the membrane completely? I have gone through a pair of cheap boots a year so I am tempted to get an uber-durable leather boot like the Scarpa SL M3, but leather takes AGES to dry. IS the durability of synthetics significantly worse? Thanks!

Vasque Sundowner GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's
February 5, 2009
Hey anyone know if/when Backcountry is going to get more sizes of these guys? I wear a 13 and I want to order from backcountry.com...Also, is it worth then extra $ to get the Scarpa SL M3's? I like the looks of the Sundowners better too, but everyone has been pretty negative about them on here lately. Thanks!

Mountain Hardwear Transition Softshell Jacket - Men's
January 17, 2009
Is the yellow-green color similar to the Dragon's? I loved the Dragon when I saw it but the Transition sounds almost and good and is a lot less $$$. Is this suitable for day-to-day wear in northeast winters (~20 degrees F) with just a light layer beneath it?So, in your opinion, the Transition is NOT warm enough for day to day non-athletic purposes (eg. walking to class or the car)? Thanks a lot for the input.

Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket - Men's

That would add extra weight and this is a complete minimalist's jacket. Waterproof zippers would add at least two ounces to this jacket and some people believe that it is not worth it. Also paclite is an incredibly breathable material. I love it.
