Bullet proof gloves - sooo warm

Black Diamond Guide Glove - Men's

Black Diamond Guide Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 21, 2009

These are fantastically warm gloves that have bulletproof construction. As others have said, they're flexible, and even with my massive hands the XL are accurately sized. The only slightly annoying thing is the lack of a dummy strap. It's not a big thing, but at this price I'd hate to lose them by accident.

Great shirt for hiking in. Good for evenings out too ...

Arc'teryx Envoy Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Arc'teryx Envoy Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I was looking for a replacement for a North Face long-sleeve hiking shirt, but unfortunately TNF don't make a nice lightweight wicking shirt that is as good as the old one I have [Why do TNF abandon really great designs? This is the 3rd time this has happened to me]. I found the current TNF product line was either too heavy, the sleeves were too short (I'm 6'5'' and XXL sleeves were about 1 inch too short) or I just didn't like the plaid colors.

So despite the fact that these are pretty expensive (thanks to Backcountry the sale made the cost a lot more palatable), I went for 2 of them. The material is lightweight, with great stretch, and I really like the tailoring of the shirt. The shirt tail is pretty long (great for the taller person) and the sleeves are long enough to fit perfectly for me (I normally take a 37.5" sleeve).

The only thing that takes a little getting used to is that it uses poppers (or snaps) rather than buttons. It's not a big thing, but I feel like I'm back in the 70's / 80's ...

On the upside, the shirt is easily the smartest piece of outdoor clothing I have. It's really neat to have a tailored shirt that wicks and is partly showerproof.

Great casual shirt at a great price

The North Face Airborne Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Airborne Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 19, 2009

I ended up getting two of these from backcountry because of the price. But even if Backcountry hadn't had this at a cheaper price than the competition when I bought them, I would have still gone for this shirt. The material is really well ventilated and feels like it's good for wicking even though I've only worn it for casual evenings out. I went for the "Deep Blue Water" shirt - looks great - I especially like the small red highlights around the collar and the logo on the sleeve. The shirt is a little on the small side compared to other TNF shirts. I have it in XXL (I'm 6'5'') and other TNF shirts in XXL are massive. These are slightly more snug - perhaps I just have to lose 10 lbs?

Another great example of Arc'teryx quality

Arc'teryx Delta LT Zip Pullover - Men's

Arc'teryx Delta LT Zip Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I have to be honest. I bought one of these on a whim. Backcountry had it on sale, and I've been an Arc'teryx fan for some time. I saw this, and although I didn't really need one, I bought it because of the great price. It is now one of my favorite 'go-to' pieces of gear. It gets stuffed into my backpack and toted all over the place ...

Superb soft-shell. Large hood great for over-helmet

Arc'teryx Gamma SV Hooded Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma SV Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I love this softshell. Arc'teryx gear is invariably bombproof and as with their other products, the quality of this is second to none. I've been wearing this when a full shell isn't necessary, and I've found that I'm using this nearly all the time (except when it's very wet or the snow is soft/wet). It goes beautifully with the Arc'teryx soft-shell Gamma pants I have. It's warm enough to wear with just a thin base-layer on most days.

Great finger-friendly training board

Metolius Wood Grips Deluxe Training Board

Metolius Wood Grips Deluxe Training Board

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I'm trying to get back into rock-climbing after a fall a few years ago. Alongside climbing, I wanted to get something for home that would let me train when I can't get to the wall. The Metolius training board is perfect - doesn't tear up my hands, which helps with long training periods. Looks great in the house too ...

Great addition to my sock drawer. When I'm wearing shorts for hiking in the summer, these get pulled out and I love wearing them all day long. Comfortable and helped keep blisters at bay in my new boots.

SmartWool Midweight Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

SmartWool Midweight Zip T-Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

Comfortable, warm (and cool if worn as a single layer). I used it during a 5 day sea-kayaking trip in San Juan Islands and was great. Comfortable, warm in the evenings when camping. Also keeps the stink away ... My wife really appreciated me wearing it :-)

I'm a Mountain Khaki fan and these shorts are tough

Mountain Khakis Alpine Utility Short - Men's

Mountain Khakis Alpine Utility Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I have a couple of pairs of Mountain Khaki's and so when I saw these, I wanted a pair. They're great. Tough triple stitching like MK's jeans and khaki pants. Comfortable and solid. I can understand the other comments about the back velcro sealed pockets - it feels like the velcro was an afterthought. The pockets themselves are a great size, but the velcro feels a bit of a cheap solution to keeping them closed.

Despite that, I still think they're perfect. I wear them when it's too hot for the MK pants.

Went for 'Bittersweet brown' - love the shirt

The North Face Powder Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Powder Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I went for a XXL shirt in bittersweet brown. At 6'5'' with long arms and and back, I wanted something that would fit comfortably, and be rugged enough for the outdoors, but casual enough at the end of the day that I could wear to the pub.

This shirt is perfect.

Lightweight, comfortable, but a little smaller than other North Face shirts of the same size

The North Face Sequoia Plaid Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Sequoia Plaid Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 19, 2009

I've had a number of North Face shirts in XXL (I'm 6'5'') because I've got long arms and broad back. The sleeves on this are a little disappointing. They're about an inch shorter than other North Face shirts that are XXL. I end up wearing it with rolled up sleeves. Might as well have bought a t-shirt.

On the upside, very lightweight, great for travel.

A little tricky to mount properly, but worth spending the time getting it right

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skins

G3 Alpinist Climbing Skins

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I bought these to go with my G3 Barons. It took me a couple of goes at making sure they mounted cleanly to make sure they were straight and aligned properly.

But once they were on properly, they're fantastic! They glide very smoothly and the traction is great, which I appreciate being 6'5'' and 220 pounds.

Think carefully whether you need these or the 7tm K2/G3 riser plates

Garmont 7tm Riser Plates

Garmont 7tm Riser Plates

Rating for this product: 3 August 19, 2009

I bought these and the K2/G3 riser plates because I had a set of G3 Baron's that I wanted to mount my Garmont 7tm bindings on. Depending upon whether your skis are pre-drilled. If you have K2/G3 that are pre-drilled and tapped - get the K2/G3 riser plates. If you have un-tapped skis that need to be drilled, get this set.

G3 The Baron All Mountain Ski

G3 The Baron All Mountain Ski

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I'm a downhill skier traditionally, and I bought these as part of my move into telemarking. I love their lightweight, and coupled with the Garmont 7tm bindings have made the transition to telemark skiing much easier than I expected.

Necessary evil you want to mount Garmont 7tm's on G3 skies

Garmont 7tm Riser Plates

Garmont 7tm Riser Plates

Rating for this product: 4 August 19, 2009

I have a set of G3 telemark skies. I ended up getting a pair of Garmont 7tm bindings to go with them. It's a little confusing whether you need these. Initially I thought I could do without them, but then discovered I needed them to align the holes correctly.

Great Telemark bindings

Garmont 7tm Power Tour Releasable Telemark Ski Binding

Garmont 7tm Power Tour Releasable Telemark Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 4 August 19, 2009

I got these to go with a new set of G3 telemark skies. Being a downhill skier who's converted to lightweight world of telemarking for ski-mountaineering, I really wanted something that offered additional safety in case of a fall. These bindings are perfect, although finding someone who was comfortable mounting them was a little challenging.

The bindings themselves are very clever. One frustration I did have was that other elements; like brakes and leashes, were additional extras which can make it kind of expensive to get a complete binding solution.

Review Title

The North Face Vaporwick Tidwell Zip Polo Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Vaporwick Tidwell Zip Polo Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2009

I bought two of these shirts. I absolutely love them and I cannot believe North Face has stopped making them. Being a big guy (6'5''), I went for XXL and they fit perfectly. The wicking is great. They also work brilliantly for the 'wash-one, wear-one' lightweight traveling mantra. They drive very quickly. When I have to replace them, I'm hoping North Face has something equivalent in the future.
