Nordica HR Pro Jet Fuel Ski

Nordica HR Pro Jet Fuel Ski

Rating for this product: 4 February 23, 2011

I have the Jet Fuels as the main ski in my quiver, and they handle pretty much everything that comes there way. This past weekend I skied everything from racing gates to a backcountry bowl at Kicking Horse and was confident they could handle the conditions.

On the groomers they rip, from soft green corduroy to icy steep blacks they are stable and hold the line like a pair of race skis.

In the crud they have the strength to blast through day old tracks and allow you to cut your own path.

I've skied them in up to 20cm of fresh powder and they perform well and the wide shovel up front does a great job of keeping you on top.

My only gripe is that they are pretty heavy skis, and at the end of a long day of skiing can become a little hard to handle. The 2010-2011 skis are lighter than previous models.

If you love to go fast on the groomers, but also like to venture into the bowls then these are the skis you want strapped to your feet. The skis are bullet proof, won't chatter.

I'm a level 5 skier, 6 feet and 170lbs and rock the 170cm skis.

Nice pair of french fries

Salomon Lord Ski

Salomon Lord Ski

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2011

These are awesome skis, they were the first pair of skis that I had that used rocker technology and I have been very impressed. I ended up in Salt Lake City for a few days and decided to bring my boots just in case it snowed, Alta received a dump so I headed to the hills and demo'd these skis for a couple of days. Very impressive, the tips floated up without effort in deep powder and crud. On the groomers they carved nice tight turns and wide sweeping turns, and they stayed stable at speed. The twin tips made for some fun switch riding. Those two days in Alta I rode everything for race skis to powder skis and these compared well to all, very true All Mountain skis.

Great Poles

Salomon Patrol Ski Pole

Salomon Patrol Ski Pole

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2011

I bought these poles after breaking the tip on my Goode poles, and am very happy with them. A nice big strap allows me to easily get my gloved hands in and out. The poles are nicely balanced and swing with ease. The baskets are for powder and stand up very well, for whatever reason I always seem to break/crack/lose my baskets. I have cracked a basket on these, but they stayed stiff.

Say no to Shell Shock

Giro Seam Helmet

Giro Seam Helmet

Rating for this product: 4 February 1, 2011

I've been using this helmet for a little over a year and have been very impressed. I haven't had to test it for protection purposes, thankfully but it is pretty robust. The helmet fits very well, and dials in for a precise fit. If it's cold out and you want to wear a thin toque or a balaclava it adjusts enough to allow it underneath. I dropped off a star only because it lets a little wind in at high speeds, though it's really only noticeable below -20C/-10F.
I was never a helmet guy, and my girlfriend bought me this as a present and it keeps my head warmer than any toque/hood ever could.

Nice Pants for the Backcountry

Patagonia Backcountry Guide Softshell Pant - Men's

Patagonia Backcountry Guide Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 1, 2011

These are great pants, I've used them for some backcountry skiing, some warm resort skiing, and playing some pond hockey and they've rocked. I usually pair them with a pair of capilene long johns and they've been good at a range of temperatures thanks to the vents, which feature a nice mesh. My only complaint is that they could have used a windproof fabric on the thighs, if it's howling out I usually go with a pair of windproof tights on underneath or go with a different pant. The gaiter cuffs aren't adjustable but they fit over my downhill ski boots with no problem, and hold snug.

Patagonia Backcountry Guide Softshell Pant - Men's

February 1, 2011

I'm a 31 inch waist and the 32 inch fit me with some room to spare even with thermal long underwear on. Unless you're wearing thick fleece underneath I think the 32's would work for you.

Great Pants

The North Face Rockeller Pant - Men's

The North Face Rockeller Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2011

I've been using these pants as my go to for this season. They are insulated, but keep a nice slim fit that will keep you from looking like the Michelan Man, or even worse, a teen park and piper. I've skied in -25C/-13F with just these and a pair of thermal long underwear underneath, I was warm on the lift and never overheated on the ski down. The gaiters hold onto boots well, I've skied all day in a foot of fresh powder and snow didn't get in my pants or boots. There are no side zips so they wouldn't be great backcountry pants, but that's not their intent. I've skied in -5C/23F with just light long johns on for comfort and they were great as well.
I'm 6'1" with a 32" waist and the medium fits perfectly around the waist (tabs to adjust) and the inseam.

The North Face Rockeller Pant - Men's

February 1, 2011

So I can now answer my own question for anyone else with the same query. The pant-a-lock system uses snaps on the base of the powder-skirt to clip onto the belt loops of your ski pants. It works with most TNF pants, but also some other pants, and can also be clipped onto a belt. The Zip-In feature is different, as the back of the jacket zips to the back of the pants.

North Face Performance

The North Face Realization Jacket - Men's

The North Face Realization Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2011

I recently got my hands on the Realization Jacket and am very impressed. It has a roomy fit, I'm 6'1" and 170lbs and the medium is plenty long in the arms and the body, it also has enough room for a insulating layer (I have TNF Red Point Jacket), and a couple of layers under that. I have skied in -25C with this combo and been warm even on stalled lift. I've skied without the insulating layer in -5C and snowing and been warm and dry as well.
It's definitely a solid resort jacket, with great ski features, and the zip vents work well for short hikes into the sidecountry. The lining and is a little too much for it to be a great backcountry jacket, but that's not its intended use.
The powder skirt is one of the better I've seen and the pant-a-lock system holds well and keeps powder out when the snows deep or you crash hard.

Just wondering how The North Face pant-a-lock system works? Zipper? Snaps? Velcro? Does it only work with TNF jackets?

Solid Pants for a Solid Price

The North Face Varius Guide Pant - Men's

The North Face Varius Guide Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 12, 2010

I stumbled upon the Varius line of North Face Gear a couple years back in Utah. I picked up the jacket and the pant from the Backcountry store as my luggage didn't arrive, I didn't want to splurge in case my bag came through, but I didn't want to wear jeans and a garbage bag either. A load of that famous Utah snow arrived before my bags did and the Varius gear did its job and has continued to do it's job in the Cassiars and in the Rockies. The pants are nice and light and roomy enough to wear a layer or two underneath, but have an athletic cut so you won't be mistaken for a wannabe park and piper. I now use these for skiing the resorts and have my bibs, yes that bag eventually came, for heavy powder days or the backcountry.
