Marmot Cauldron Insulated Jacket - Men's

Black Diamond Neve Strap Crampons with ABS

December 26, 2011

SO - BD makes a few strap-on models. This pair is ALUMINUM - meaning while they are lighter weight, they will dull and wear rapidly if used on anything other than snow and have limited performance on steep ice. ABS - needed whenever you will be traveling on snow - they keep the snow from balling up and clumping under the 'pon.

If you plan on using them as an ALL AROUND 'pon - go with a steel / stainless variation and ensure they have ABS. Depends on the size of the ski boot - BD does make ones with oversize straps for larger boots.

Marmot Alpinist Bivy

December 26, 2011

I have this bivy and too many different bag combo's - if your looking for extra protection, if you can spend your $ on a bag with moisture resistance or treat your current bag. For a vapor / moisture barrier, an extra pound is lots to carry speaking from experience.

If your sleeping in a tent and I assume you have a properly rated bag yet are concerned with MOISTURE during winter outings, rethink how you are setting up your tent to get MORE ventilation / airflow to avoid moisture issues. That said, all other considerations aside, yes, this bivy will help keep your bag dry but with significant weight and volume penalties that gotten around with a little extra care and buying a better winter bag.

**If you suffer from excess frost/moisture and if your looking at this as a solution to avoid needing to increase the amount of ventilation in your tent, it is going to deliver lackluster results at best.

Timberland Brattle Hiker Boot - Women's

December 10, 2011

They are NOT - however, they are full grain leather which works VERY well with waterproofer / sealer. In most cases, if these boots fit nice and if you like the styling, the water resistance you will gain with a treatment will do you fine.

Typically a GORTEX liner is what makes a boot more waterproof but even with that, they require treatment to prevent the shell layer from sucking up too much water. People choosing a boot with a gortex give up some breathability, the boot also typically weights more - they gain a boot that can handle being subjected to more puddles and less vigilant treating of fabric to stay waterproof.

The North Face Potosi Jacket - Men's

December 10, 2011

This is a totally different type of jacket as it has no insulation other than the fabric backing the membrane which is not very substantial - thus its up to you to layer under it for what you will encounter. The major advantage to having a clothing system VS just a jacket is versatility and the ability to shed / add layers when you warm up / cool down, weight saving, and the ability to dry a jacket out quicker.

If your doing something active with a next to skin layer and a 100 weight fleece, your looking at comfortable 20's. - anything lower your probably going to want a thicker next to skin and 200 weight or equal insulation layer. You can of course go lighter for being on the move and layer up with a puffy down or synthetic jack when stopped.

Grivel G14 Crampon

December 10, 2011

There are such a wide variety of boots that it is hard to comment - they can fit some boots, need extender bars for others, and some are just out of the question (which is why they sell the set specifically designed for ski boots).

I would ask the question more along the lines though is why are you looking at crampons that are geared more towards vertical ice as opposed to something that is geared more towards ski or general mountaineering? If you are using on approaches to ski - you want something with front points that are more broad and may want to consider an aluminum crampon depending on your needs (if only using to cross where there is little rock) as they are much lighter. If you are looking for a do everything crampon, check out the new Petzl line as they have a system now with straps and bails.

Osprey Packs Mutant 38 Backpack - 2100-2550cu in

Rating for this product: 4 December 10, 2011

Got this to compare with TNF Phophet 40 - ended up keeping this one even though it is heavier as it seemed to fit more (and is 3 liters smaller) but due to shape, it was easier to pack more into. I wish the pack weighed a little less - I can see how this could easily be accomplished by slimming down on some of the huge nylon webbing. Nonetheless, a great pack with some pretty cool and useful features.

Lace loops wore out pre-maturely

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 November 13, 2011

The lace loops on my pair wore our pre-maturely - I was pretty easy on these shoes and did not get a whole lot of wear before the lace loop decided it had enough and needed to retire. Seems like it is a pretty common issue on these otherwise bomber pair of shoes - and there is no way to fix it... I would not buy another pair of these until the issue with lace loop is remedied. (The lace cord, where it normally attaches through a hole in the shoe is attached it a little loop of nylon webbing like material - there is just too much friction on the nylon to nylon with no reinforcements like the others on the shoe has, that it just rubs right though.

Merrell Perimeter GTX Backpacking Boot - Men's

October 4, 2011

Not very breathable - they are a goretex leather boot so they are going to run like just about any other boot like this, a little on the warm side. The trick is the sock system you use with them IF you need such a heavy boot - try liners with a GOOD quality wicking sock.

If you don't mind something a little more lite weight, check out the Salewa offerings. The come in goretex and tend to be a whole lot more breathable - but you give us the extra support of leather and the material used to build these boots tends to absorb more water than full grain leather even with treatment, so if you do lots in freezing conditions, you may find yourself with cool feet.

You can use a strap on crampon for light duty use - they hold quite well to my pair. These boots do not have welts front or rear welts so they must attach with straps front and back.

They are fine for crossing a little ice / snow but anything that requires much front pointing, you are going to want to go with a stiffer boot meant for mountaineering as others have noted. If you are just after a boot to hike Adirondack / Whites / etc. conditions and use a crampon for the ice encountered on the trail, this will do you fine.

You need a full pad on all big ag bags - otherwise, you will be sleeping with your feet unprotected and when its gets chilly out, not only will your feet be cold, but so will the rest of you as there will be extra room and no "draft collar" to keep all the cold from the ground out of the rest of your bag. These bags have no insulation on the bottom. If weight is a consideration, look at the new thermarest pad.

If you need something that is a rather large pack your going to sacrifice some comfort for the technical features and the ability to strip the pack down for a summit push. This pack is a good compromise between something very minimalist and overkill.

It does not have a shovel holder but there is plenty of room outside the pack to attach that to. You can take the lid off and compress the sac for play time and the waist belt does tuck around the pack nicely if you have a need to get it out of your way.

Mammut Ultimate Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mammut Ultimate Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 18, 2011

The woodbine color I ordered is more green than it is the yellow my computer displays. The jacket's sleeves are a bit long and the zippers are cold against your arms on the interior. I ordered a large to accommodate for layers under it and give myself some room to move, but I am swimming in it. I am 5'10 / 180lbs.

I also noticed that the full zippers on the side tend to come unzipped rather easily with a little movement - this is not exactly a great design as you have to stop and re-zip them.

Overall, for the money, I think there are many better jackets out there but if the styling does it for you, you just found yourself a pretty lite duty softshell that is pretty stretchy.

Mountain Hardwear Carnic Jacket - Men's

April 15, 2011

I am about the same size and struggle with this all the time with MH's sizing as their large is too large and their medium just a tad too small for layers - I usually go with the large to give myself a "little extra" room for layers and mobility. The medium fits but it tends to be athletic - while I like the look better, its less functional - restricts movement some and tends to compress insulation more.

Grivel Air Tech Evo Ice Axe w/ Easy Slider

April 15, 2011

Length of shaft depends on your height - the steeper terrain you go, generally, the shorter the axe you use.

An easy way to measure for an axe is to hold it while standing relaxed. The spike at the bottom should barely touch the ground when you stand fully upright with your arms at your sides.

Positive clearance picks offer a bit better performance for ice - ie: your bent shaft and pick affect this. The pic is the older generation of Grivel's axe - this axe should come with the current slider.

Asolo Power Matic 200 GV Boot - Men's

April 15, 2011

The TPS 520 is going to be a heavier boot with less technology advances - simply put. Both would be good for backpacking - and it depends more on preference than it does load to a large degree. Both are heavy backpacking boots. The 520, along with it's weight, has a slightly deeper lugged sole.

Old school thought is that backpacks have to be heavy and you need a heavy boot for support - been down that road. I can speak from experience I like to carry no more than a 45 lb pack and even over the roughest terrain for longer distances, I like a boot that weights less - every step you have to take expends less energy with a boot / gear that weights less - light is right. That said, some people still prefer a traditional boot (I have a pair of 520's - they are bomber) and some people prefer a boot that incorporates more technology ie: the 535 (they are going to provide support with a little less weight and have a slightly different feel).

If I were to make a recommendation, if you don't already know why you WANT the 520's, go with the 200's.

These are fleece pants - in my experience there are better choices for something highly aerobic like figure skating, that is unless she will be taking them off when she skates - uses them only for when she is sitting and cold, they would be great.

If she is using them for skating, IE: aerobic, I would look a little more towards something like merino wool or Patagonia's capilene.

Kayland M11+ Mountaineering Boot - Men's

April 15, 2011

I tried these on but went with the Nepals for the simple fact that my foot is a little wider and the Nepals had a better fit. The toe box on these boots seemed to be roomier than others I tried on. You can always alter the fit if you like these boots with a replacement foot bed and size the boot up a little.

These can be used on approach hikes - they are a stiff boot but if my memory serves me right, they have a rocker sole which helps out quite a bit.

TNF does not list options for tall on their website - never saw tall in TNF either. That said, if you want this jacket it is a bit more generously sized than a Mountain Hardwear which tends to be a bit shorter hence living up to it's namesake of a jacket. Unless your like 6'4, your probably good with this as a jacket - not wearing it longer like a parka.

MontBell U.L. Spiral Hugger #1 Down Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

April 14, 2011

Your not going to have a ton of room in it but it won't be tight - if you have too much room or too little room, you loose the rating of the bag (too tight compresses and too loose is too much air space). If your a cold sleeper and wear several layers or wear leather boots (or boots without removable liners) and will be sleeping in freezing conditions, you will want a bigger bag so you can put your boots in at the bottom to keep them from freezing.

Hard to dry

The North Face Kelvin Glove

The North Face Kelvin Glove

Rating for this product: 3 April 9, 2011

I purchased these gloves to use for ice climbing - what I found is that they are too bulky to place a screw with in just about every position. I thought that the built in curve as TNF claims would be the ticket - it just did not work for me.

The gloves were good for top roping and keeping your hands dry and somewhat warm. I found that they were also difficult to dry out after a day's use. You can't pull the liner out (its not a removable liner) which is a good thing as it would come out as soon as your hands are a bit damp, but I found these gloves to hold moisture more than most. The leather soaked up water more than I would have liked to see as well.

Millet Gokyo Peak Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 9, 2011

I did not experience any issues with the zippers as other users did. The fit of the pants for me personally did not work - the waist was simply to big (I bought them a little big for room) and when you try to cinch the belt down, the waist material bunches up and falls below the belt. Terribly uncomfortable and looks awful. If you size them right and they fit - great pair of pants. I wish I could get my hands on a pair of mediums...

Good when new

Scarpa Quest Shoe - Men's

Scarpa Quest Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 April 9, 2011

I bought these shoes with the intention of using them for some easy slab climbing and maybe some easy grades - what I found out though is that the rubber simply does not hold up to repeated use. Understandably these are NOT running or general purpose shoes, but I have one trip up the trap dike and maybe 2 hikes and mine are trashed. I would expect a bit more from a $125 shoe.

They did climb half way decent when new - they stretched out quite a bit to the point that I needed to be wearing a heavy sock to be able to dial them in. Another annoying item was how high the heal rise was - if these had a lower heal rise they would be SO MUCH more stable in general. This huge rise made it so you could only edge with the very front of the shoe. I get more edging performance out of minimalist shoes. Style wise - they were a super cool look.

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

November 20, 2010

Any heavy duty backpacking boot, and for that matter mid duty support hiking boot that offers support is going to be warmer then a breathable hiking shoe or trail runner. From what you described, these boots will meet and exceed your needs with a good sock. The only caution I would give you is not to compare these to a lightweight hiker - they are not. They offer more versatility but that comes with the price tag of not being quite as light or being extremely comfortable on mid summer day hikes.

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's

November 20, 2010

Definitely good boots for you - much lighter then typical lineman's boots and offer more support. The only challenge being a user of both work, linemans, and mountaineering boots that I have found is that some boots that have a very stiff sole and lack a rocker sole like that found on La Sportiva's Nepal Extreme can be somewhat harder to hike with on level hard ground - noticeable but no where near a deal breaker.

If you work where its wet and wear cotton pants, don't forget to buy a pair of gaiters as these boots are not as high as typical lineman's boots. Gaiters are awesome to have in the event of snow anyway - great investment. Your feet and body will thank you for all of the comfort found in this set up.

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

October 20, 2010

Might be a little late - my opinion and experience is that the Sabretooth is a fine crampon for mountaineering and ice climbing. If your asking, the Sabretooth is the better choice.

The horizontal front points offer more stability on ice (good for a beginner) and perform much better in mountaineering situations because of their increased surface area.

Would the Cyborgs work? You bet - but from my experience there is a bit more of a learning curve with technique on softer ice, etc. What is nice about these are the front points can be configured to mono-point or replaced. Mono point has its advantages of once you get the footwork down, it is easier to kick into hard ice. They are also easier to use for mixed climbing - easier to find placements on dry rock with a longer and more vertical single front point.

I guess there are other options out there for more $$$ that give a bit better performance - some of them noted... And nothing against those jackets as I own some of them and can vouch, but for the price point this is an awesome jacket. Sizing is a bit larger then average even when accommodating for layers - but this is a good thing so just keep in mind when ordering.

Other then that, I really haven't had much use for this - I am not really sure who would. I found it hard to fit my BD tools b/c of the bend, the pack is bulky but I can see that it would protect your gear.. I use a separate crampon bag, so this is unneeded for that. Good Light

Petzl MYO XP Headlamp

Petzl MYO XP Headlamp

Rating for this product: 3 March 9, 2010

I own two of these and two BD SPOT's - honestly, for double the price I would expect more. I really, having both of them, can't justify spending double on the Petzl lights. The BD lights are just about as good and cost 1/2 the price - burn time is not significantly different where it is a deal breaker and the BD is just as bright if not brighter. I always carry extra batteries so stressing over a few hours worth of burn time has never been my thing.

Where this light sets itself apart is the headband and having the top strap - if you really need something for bouncy running and tend to have a slippery forehead, I can see where the top strap comes in handy.. Otherwise, both attach just fine to my climbing helmets.

Bottom line is I would buy this light again, but only if it were on sale and I would not buy 2 of them. It is a good light - and is better then many others - it is just that the degree is really not that noticeable. I must be spoiled with my Jetlite when riding my Mtn Bike!! lol

Antibots suck

Grivel Rambo 4 Crampon

Grivel Rambo 4 Crampon

Rating for this product: 2 March 9, 2010

I have 3 pairs of crampons - BD Sabertooths, Cyborgs, and these -- the BD brand by far beat these in just about every way aside from the heel spur in my opinion. I like the front point configuration versatility - but the durability of these crampons has so much to be desired.

1st time out, both anti-bots broke in different places. No - I was not using them improperly unless walking in snow and standing at the bottom of a climb on ice are considered improper. I was really disappointed.. Another note was the depth, or lack there of, because of the anti-bot and curved points. There is hardly any penetration when attempting to use these things on even ground (such as a rest when climbing, approach, etc.) To me, these crampons have the ultimate shiny ball effect - wow!! these are neat, get a pair, use them a little, and return or retire them and go back to your trusted and proven BD or Petzl favs.

The BEST

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 March 9, 2010

Love my BD Sabertooth crampons - and I have Cyborgs and had Rambo 4's to compare them too. One of the largest differences I noticed between the BD and Grivel brand which really made DB shine was the depth and design of the antibot plate. I had my Rambo's for one day and the anti-bots on both of them were already broken - there was no clearance between them and the ground thus they provided very little bite - although the front/heel points were pretty awesome - still, the BD's will do the job and not frustrate you with poor design.

The Sabertooth is your go to crampon if your only going to own 1 pair - take care of them and they will last a long time. The horizontal front points, although not **optimal** for vertical ice, climbs with the best of them. My opinion is that it actually provides a more stable feel then the cyborgs and is not all that much more difficult to get to bite.

Lowe Alpine Mountain Attack Pro 35+10 Pack - 2100cu in

Lowe Alpine Mountain Attack Pro 35+10 Pack - 2100cu in

Rating for this product: 4 February 3, 2010

This pack has all the bells and whistles without being of minimalist design, it's weight still is not too bad. Tons of little ingenious stow options which make packing this easy. Very comfortable to wear and does not get in the way while climbing / approach. There is not a formal way to clip the hip belt behind the back (like the osprey mutant), but just doing so in reverse keeps the belts out of the way.

The outside attachment points are handy too - the daily chain loops and ice axe holders on the belt are an added bonus.

The only option that I can't quite get right yet is the ice axe pick stow sleeve. It seems like 1 time using this and that will be the end of it - my picks with my home made hose protectors don't fit in it - I guess I have some figuring out to do - this is the only item that kept it from getting 5 stars.

Overall, this pack is becoming my new favorite go to pack. I bought it for ice climbing and I am finding that I use it for day hikes and any other time I need a handy and cool bag to take along.

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness

Rating for this product: 4 February 1, 2010

I got the bright idea to buy 2 of these - one for myself and one for whoever is belaying me. I sent mine back but my belayer (g/f) is happy with hers.

Its a good starter harness, but when I was in it for any length of time, I was wishing I purchased a bit more of a substantial harness with a little more area / padding. I have since done so and I am waiting for my partner to want the same.

Comparing to several other BD harnesses, I can note that this is a very light / thin harness which is great for not taking up space, etc, but when hanging at a belay or rapping, I was always wishing for a bit more padding / wider webbing.

This also had 3 buckles where you need to double back - good for feeling secure but it is a pia to put on. I prefer the speed buckles and fixed leg loops as its easier to put on and takes away the natural tenancy to over tighten your leg loops.

Outdoor Research Expedition Crocodile Gaiter

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2010

Whether I am wearing these (Size XL) over my size 47 FSN 95's or Nepal Extremes, I have found nothing to complain about. Season 3 - I have yet to rip one and the do a good job at "deflecting" crampons.

Like some others have noted, these are not a tight fitting gaiter if you are not bulky in the legs - I think this is a good thing as if you compress your insulation too much, it no longer does its job. The closure has ability to snug up more when you have fewer layers on.

OR got it right on these - but really, when does OR get it wrong?

Outdoor Research Expedition Crocodile Gaiter

Sizing has much to do with your boot vs. your calf sizing alone. If you size down, you may find that the gaiter covers less of your boot. If your looking for a slimmer or tighter fitting gaiter I would check out the Black Diamond FrontPoint GTX Gaiter. This is a bit of a smaller cut gaiter as their primary purpose is ice climbing - where loose gaiters always = crampon bites.

Black Diamond FrontPoint GTX Gaiter

Black Diamond FrontPoint GTX Gaiter

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2010

Great gaiter for ice climbing - yes, they fit a bit snug - but they are SUPPOSED to. This is to lessen the chance you will catch a crampon on it - you don't want to be that guy with duct tape all over their gaiters, do you? Bombproof - exactly the type of product you would expect from Black Diamond.

Black Diamond ATC-XP

Black Diamond ATC-XP

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2010

Love it - so much more holding power then a standard type belay device. I especially like it when there is a weight difference between belayer and climber. I notice when ice climbing and if the rope gets a little frozen, it does make for a little bit more of a jerky ride, but even with this, it is confidence instilling that not only will you catch a fall with your bulky gloves, but you will be caught as well. The new standard - from the gym to the crag.

And when you want less friction - turn it around. Ladies and Gents - we have a winner. The guide model is cool as well if you have a need - this is a good supplement and is a few bucks cheaper for your backup if you have a need for carrying 2 devices - errgh - twisted ropes, munter hitch / carabiner make-do belay device...

Good night's sleep

Big Agnes Gunn Creek Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic

Big Agnes Gunn Creek Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 5 January 31, 2010

Great bag - alone or zipped up with another just like it. The Big Ag 3 season bad is a great compliment to the bag (you need a pad b/c there is no insulation on the bottom of the bag), so you might as well get the pad that rolls up with the bag in a single stuff sack that's right!! No pad rolled up on the outside of your pack!!

I have slept in this bag in temps ranging from +25 to 60 degrees F - and slept on this bag in temps higher. Colder weather, I wore fleece to bed to supplement. No complaints!!

Black Diamond Raven Ultra Ice Axe

January 31, 2010

Depends what the use is for - generally, error on the side of shorter. If he is going to use where there is a little climbing involved, go with a slightly more technical tool as the BD Venom. You can always double up for a more technical setup down the road.

Generally, there is not "set" size as body types differ - how you measure is boots on - it should be approximately the length between the tips of your fingers and the floor when standing with your arms at your sides - measured in centimeters. Some people like to test this with a stick cut to length before buying to make sure they are comfy with the length.

Remember too - there are options from Petzl that double as an adjustable "trekking pole" depending on use.

Petzl Irvis 10-Point Crampon

January 30, 2010

It depends on the type and size of boot. It the boot your using is a low volume leather hiking boot - such as the Asolo FSN 95 in size 13, it will fit. It is a larger volume or double boot, you may need the extender bars. What I have found wearing a size 13, and have 4 pairs of crampons all if which directed me that I will need extender bars - is that if your using modern low volume leather boots - I also have size 47 La Sportiva Nepal Extremes - the direction of needing extender bars is not always spot on. I have not needed extender bars yet - crampons fit all boots no problem. However, use a higher volume boot or double boot - and I can see where the extender bars would be needed.

Great tools

Black Diamond Viper Ice Tool

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2010

Bought these tools (hammer and adze)after having the opportunity to borrow a plethora of tools - these came to the top so I bought them. No knuckle bashing, lightweight, picks are easy to sink and don't have excess vibration, easy to remove, durable, and priced decent - even better when you can get them on sale. I bought the android leashes to go along with them - so far, they have only ever stayed in my pack and only came for a walk. Leashless is the way to go - very good product.

Black Diamond Chaos Harness

Black Diamond Chaos Harness

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2010

The difference is night and day - not only is this harness much more comfortable, but the extra padding and "substance" make it feel more secure. Yeah - just a feeling but so much more comfortable. Did I mention the speed buckle and lack of leg buckles make it extremely quick and easy to put on? I wear this with shorts up to over 3 layers for ice climbing - no disappointments here.

Black Diamond Wiz Kid Harness

Black Diamond Wiz Kid Harness

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2010

My kiddo loves this harness - from the gym to the crag, it performs flawlessly. No complaining ever of an uncomfortable harness, easy to adjust, and it seems to be wearing very nicely. Much better then trying to make an adult harness "do".

Great poles

Black Diamond Trail Back Trekking Pole

Black Diamond Trail Back Trekking Pole

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2010

I bought these after struggling with my brother's Leki twist lock poles - this is after a trip where I observed another friend had these and they adjusted effortlessly. I checked them out - strong, check - adjustable, check - good price, check, grip, check - carbide tip, check. I thought to myself - time to give my brother his poles back so he can struggle with them - I am getting myself some BDs.

Great Pants

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Softshell Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2010

I have used these now on several ice climbing trip - these keep me dry and I have not experienced any of the complaints others have noted on this thread. I use external gaiters - I'd prefer to chew those up with crampon bites then walk around with tape on these. They dry out fast, offer a little insulation but work beautifully with under armor base and mid layers.

I bought these pants to bridge the gap between a pair of nylon convertibles and my Beryllium Bib - these are a new favorite.

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

January 18, 2010

You want to be able to wiggle your toes - as you need a less then snug fit to keep your toes warm. Try experimenting with liners and thicker socks. If you need a bit more tweaking, try new inserts and possibly a heel elevator insert - makes a world of difference.

The North Face Terra Youth 55 Backpack - 3050cu in

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2010

Bought for my son - 9 yrs old - and he has nothing but good feedback to me when using this. Never a complaint about a hot spot, rubbing, jammed zipper, or anything else for that matter. He says it looks cool too! Definitely a good investment as it has brought many smiles to his face.

My own observations - well made, very adjustable, and lots of pockets to keep things organized. When shopping for a pack for him, I could not find another pack that compares.

Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2010

Everything you could want from a convertible pant! They fit me well, do everything advertised, stand up to rough use, and so far all the seems are holding tight. I like these pants for 3 season use and for dry 4 season - with a good base layer, these don't pick up water and add a light shell for wintertime use. No complaints whatsoever!!

My cheeks are still sore!! But...

Big Agnes Dual Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Big Agnes Dual Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2010

What an absolutely warm pad that packs away just beautifully within the sleeping bag stuff sack along with the bag. I sometimes wish you did not have the blow the thing up a little, but it is little effort for such a warm pad. Just got it & tested it out in 15 degree weather - beautiful!! I have a Big Ag Lost Ranger bag that I tried the insulated BA air core pad with - it is not in the same class as the dual core. Spend the extra few bucks if you plan to do cold weather camping - if you don't, the insulated air core works just fine for most everything else and is an extremely comfortable pad.

Bottom line - a great pad with a repair kit, light weight, great comfort and warmth - this piece of gear is gold standard!!

Lightening Ascents set the standard

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2010

I don't think there is anything more I could ask for in a snowshoe. Traction is always there, good comfort, light weight, easy on/off (although sometimes the excess binding straps come out of their little holders when cinched down - easy enough to reach down and place the excess back in - I might cut this someday, but for now I can't bring myself to modify such a fine piece of gear!)heel lifts along with the added traction of the serrated edges really separate these apart from others when climbing. I also noticed that the bindings on these when compared to other pairs I have tried really work well when moving across side hills as they allow flex this keeping an upright stance.

Bottom line - great snowshoe!! I would and have already recommended these to friends.

If you like blisters and poor traction...

Asolo FSN 95 GTX Boot - Men's - DO NOT USE

Asolo FSN 95 GTX Boot - Men's - DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 3 August 21, 2009

GET THIS BOOT!! Ok, not really terrible but for almost $200 bucks, I expect a decent hiker. These boots are not consistently made - you would not believe the variations between my right and left boot! So far waterproof and no split seams with 250 plus miles. Really contemplating on sending them back though as they offer poor traction and are not all that comfortable for as stiff as they are.

On another note, for being stiff, they offer poor stability when climbing and your whole foot is not firmly planted. Previously had a pair of Asolo 520 - and in less then 2 months they de-laminated. I am almost afraid to give Asolo another shot even though I really want to try the Fugitive.

Good boot

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 21, 2009

My only complaint is that the lace locks are poor quality plastic thus providing an inconsistent experience out of the box and only wear out more in time. Yeah, the idea is great but they should have been metal or something that does not have so much give in them.

The do perform however; my BD Sabertooths hold well and the boots themselves have mad opportunity to be adjusted for a just right fit. I use for vertical ice climbing and this has been the best boot I have used to date as long as I keep moving. I have cold feet and I needed to experiment with socks and foot warmers before I found the right mix to keep my feet warm.

Bottom line - mountaineering boots are expensive and if your going to invest in a good pair, I am not sure you could make a better pick then the extremes for a leather boot.

Big Agnes Lost Ranger Sleeping Bag: 15-Degree Down

Big Agnes Lost Ranger Sleeping Bag: 15-Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 August 21, 2009

Roomy bag but not really that lite nor small packing for a down bag but having the integrated pad sleeve and using a big ag pad that packs with it - great system for the money & at this time, the bag, pack size, and weight really shine.

Does what it says and does it well - if you plan to use this in colder conditions, buy the dual core pad vs the single core insulated big ag pad - a few bucks and ounces more, but so worth the weight.

Exercise for my cheeks

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Rating for this product: 4 August 21, 2009

It is pretty thick so it takes quite a bit to blow up - not bad but my cheeks hurt by the time I am done. Packs smaller and is liter then the Thermarest and packs in the bag with my Big Agnes bags which is AWESOME!! Overall, very comfy but the temperature ratings are a bit off unless you are wearing some serious layers as well to compensate. This is a 3 season MINUS pad - don't let the "insulated" tag fool you, it is however better then a pure air pad.

Decent for the Money

The North Face Rock 22 Bx Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Rock 22 Bx Tent: 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 August 21, 2009

I have both a 2 and 3 person of this model. Somewhat roomy and decent overall design but they make you pay more for a footprint - Marmot comes with a footprint and costs less but I like this design better & they were not available when I needed to buy.

As far as being waterproof, I think it is more resistant. I have been in a few light storms and stayed dry but the rain fly was soaked though and with a little more rain I am sure I would be taking a shower.

Overall, decent value for the money. Packs lite for the size but NOT really small. Easy & fast to set up. Hey, what can you expect for a low $$ tent? But anything from BackCountry is the bomb b/c if it starts to suck or get under your skin, SEND IT BACK!! :-)
