Canada Goose Chilliwack Parka is exactly what I wanted

Canada Goose Chilliwack Parka - Women's

Canada Goose Chilliwack Parka - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 1 day ago

Now that I have this jacket I want to bump every other product I've rated 5 stars back down to 4. The jacket is warm, stylish and not as bulky as it looks in the picture. When one of my friends who worked in Antarctica for a while saw it, he yelled, "Great jacket! That's what we wore at McMurdo Station! Does it have the inner nalgene bottle pocket?"

Yup. It has the inner pocket to keep your water from freezing. It has 2 small pockets on the upper left sleeve for pens. It has a small zipped pocket next to them for your pad of paper.

The lower pockets have velcro to keep them shut and the upper pockets are lined with soft, warm fabric. The zipper is heavy duty with large teeth and the buttons are fastened with strips of fabric -- not thread. The hood comes with a drawstring to snug it down tight against the wind. The jacket is very well- made and looks like it will last for years.

I have never been warm enough in my winter gear until now. This jacket is exactly what I needed.

Mountain Hardware Sarafin Cardigan my favorite warm shirt

Mountain Hardwear Sarafin Cardigan - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Sarafin Cardigan - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 20, 2009

The Mountain Hardware Sarafin Cardigan is my favorite warm shirt. I wear it over a shirt because it's a little too warm to wear in the office but it's perfect for our current cool mornings and evenings. It fits more tightly than the Mountain Hardware Sarafin Sweater so the styling through the body is more accentuated and you can still get clean lines even if you wear it unzipped over a tank top. The arms are a bit long if you're a petite, like me, but the material is thin enough that you can push the sleeves up without uncomfortable bunching. The material on the collar is soft but the rest of the shirt can occasionally be slightly itchy. If you have sensitive skin you might want to consider wearing a bottom layer underneath it.

Mountain Hardware Sarafin Sweater warm, comfortable

Mountain Hardwear Sarafin Sweater - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Sarafin Sweater - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 September 20, 2009

The Mountain Hardware Sarafin Sweater is warmer than it looks. You can wear it to replace a jacket if the air is still, but it won't stop a breeze. It is soft but occasionally feels slightly itchy, so if you have sensitive skin you might want to wear it over a light bottom layer. I typically wear a 6-8 petite so the arms are a little long on me but would likely be perfect for anyone who wears regular sizes. The sizing on this sweater is slightly larger through the shoulders and mid-section than the Mountain Hardware Sarafin Cardigan, which is another great choice in this category.

Yakima Mighty Mount quick and easy

Yakima Horizontal Mighty Mount - Set of 4

Yakima Horizontal Mighty Mount - Set of 4

Rating for this product: 5 August 27, 2009

The Yakima Mighty Mounts fit both my car and my kayak carriers perfectly. They were quick and easy to install and didn't require special equipment. It can be confusing to choose mounts so make sure you use the Car Rack Configurator at the top of this page or on the Car Racks page through the links to the left to figure out what will work for you. You will also need a set of 4 mounts per thing you're putting on your car. For example -- if you're going to carry a kayak with a cradle on one end of the boat and rollers on the other, you will need 2 sets of Mighty Mounts.

Stohlquist aSEA Life Jacket

Rating for this product: 5 August 10, 2009

The Stohlquist aSEA life jacket was purchased to be used by all the people in my family -- male and female, teens and adults -- who wanted to try kayaking. The straps quickly adjust to comfortably fit all the people who tried it. The shoulder area is open and doesn't interfere with paddling. I recommend this jacket.

Kokatat sea skirt good for very small cockpits

Kokatat Tropos Deluxe Sea Skirt

Kokatat Tropos Deluxe Sea Skirt

Rating for this product: 4 July 12, 2009

I took a chance on this sea skirt when I couldn't find one that showed as fitting my Necky Eliza. The cockpit dimensions on the Eliza are 28.5" x 15" / 72.4 x 34.9 cm -- pretty small when you're looking at sea skirts. This one adjusts down to fit that size because it has a drawstring you can cinch down and tie. However, it doesn't seal well so you're going to get very wet if you use it in choppy seas or roll your kayak.

Columbia Trekster Knee Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 19, 2009

These pants are my favorite hiking pants. I usually wear a size 6, and these fit comfortably in that size. The pocket styling is a nice touch. The waistband doesn't pinch or roll and the pockets lie flat. If you're short like me, this won't hit you at the knee. I'm 5' tall and they hit me mid-calf.

Patagonia Borderless Zip-Off Pant - Women's

Patagonia Borderless Zip-Off Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 June 19, 2009

The Patagonia Borderless Zip-off pant has great styling and fits comfortably but they're too long for 5' frame so I wear them strictly as a capri. The only drawback to this pant is the slight swish-swosh sound the fabric makes when I walk. They're the only hiking pant I own that sounds like ski pants. They're a little heavier material than some of the other hiking pants I own so I tend to wear them when it's raining. They keep me a little warmer and then dry surprisingly quickly.

OR Venture Pants - nice fit for short legs

Outdoor Research Venture Pants - Women's

Outdoor Research Venture Pants - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 June 19, 2009

At slightly over 5 feet tall, I have a hard time finding pants that fit my leg length. These are so perfect I bought a second pair as soon as I tried them on. I usually wear a size 6 and the medium fits me well. They're light and comfortable both on the trail and in the office. I like both the barley and the expresso colors but prefer the barley when the sun is out and I want to feel a little cooler. I have found the lighter color easy to clean even after grinding in dirt and grass stains. The fabric takes a beating without showing wear.

Columbia Bamboo Bliss T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 May 22, 2009

I was a little nervous about getting a 100% cotton shirt but the slight rib makes this shirt cool and breathable and it doesn't wrinkle. With a mock turtleneck it dresses up enough to wear with a skirt.

Rating for this product: 4 May 22, 2009

This shirt looks great on! The styling around the collar gives it a unique looks so I don't feel like I'm a cookie-cutter version of everyone else on the trail. I love the orange color. I only wish it came with a shelf bra instead of the double-layer construction.

The North Face Diane Sport Tank - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 May 22, 2009

This is a very nice shirt. It offers good support even for those of us with more ample figures but I probably wouldn't run in it. For hiking, yoga and hanging it out's fine. The fabric is light and keeps me cool. I like the way the longer, loose fit skims my waist so I don't feel stuffed into my workout gear.

Yakima Outdoorsman 300 - Full Size

August 22, 2008

Kayaks are escape artists. That aerodynamic quality that makes them slice through the water also makes them want to take flight. In addition to tie-down straps, bow and stern tie-downs and possibly the Yakima BoatLocker, I'd take a look at the Yakima Crossbar Pads for that added bit of friction and a way to protect your kayak when you're hauling it.

August 22, 2008

Since the Mighty Mounts are used to attach Yakima racks to the factory rack of your car, you can use this to attach Yakima snowboard and ski racks to your car. The picture's a little tricky since it shows the car, the factory rack, the Yakima rack AND the clips, but you would actually just be purchasing the clips.

Big Agnes Gunn Creek: good sleeping bags

Big Agnes Gunn Creek Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic

Big Agnes Gunn Creek Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 4 August 19, 2008

We took the family camping this weekend. 3 of the kids (teen girls) used this bag. Two of them (a low body fat gymnast and similarly slim basketball player) thought it wasn't warm enough (it was close to that 30-degree mark for the overnight low) but they were toasty once they zipped their bags together. The third (my competitive swimmer who packs a little more padding on her body) thought it was great.

I like the pockets for the sleeping pad and the pillow. The Big Agnes Air Core pillow fits perfectly into the pocket and the Clearview Air Pad works well with this bag.

Big Agnes Dream Island Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2008

The Big Agnes Dream Island sleeping bag is a great couple's bag. I like having zippers on both sides because my husband is a warm sleeper while I'm a cold sleeper. When he feels a little warm he can unzip his side a bit for a breeze while I stay toasty. At 5'11" he is comfortable with the length of the bag. I also like the pockets for the sleeping pad and pillows. The Big Agnes Air Core pillows and the Hinman 50" x 78" sleeping pad work well with this bag.

Outdoor Research Hydroseal Dry Sacks

Rating for this product: 5 August 19, 2008

They're sacks. They keep your stuff dry. They have loops on the side so you can secure them. What's not to love here? The Outdoor Research Hydroseal Dry Sacks do what you buy them to do and they look good doing it. Ever been on vacation and decide to take a cheesy kayak tour out in the bay and they hand you the very ugly, very plastic-looking dry sack that is such a monster you risk getting your stuff wet rather than using it? This sack is the opposite of that.

I like a lot of what I've tried from Patagonia but their Rhythm Hooded Sweatshirt isn't high on my list. The material is a little rigid. I like it for going places where I don't plan on being very active but for hiking, climbing and kayaking it hasn't fit the bill for me.

Big Agnes Air Core Pillow: good camping pillow

Big Agnes Air Core Pillow

Big Agnes Air Core Pillow

Rating for this product: 4 August 18, 2008

The Big Agnes Air Core Pillow is good for camping. It's not as comfortable as the pillow I use at home, but my tent isn't as big as my house, either. I don't let my kids bring their pillows from home when we camp because they aren't vigilant at keeping them out of the dirt. These pillows are easily dusted off if they get kicked around the campsite. They fit well in the Big Agnes Gunn Creek and Big Agnes Dream Island sleeping bag pillow slots. They're light. They pack down small enough to tuck into the sleeping bag stuff sacks. One of my daughters didn't like the pillow except as a base underneath the regular pillow she snuck out from her bed. Two of my daughters, my husband and I thought it was reasonably comfortable for a camping experience. My son says it's very comfortable if you let a little of the air out.

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2008

I'm very happy with the Big Agnes Clearview Air Pad. Four of my kids slept on this pad this weekend and all 4 raved about it. The regular size (20 x 72) fit inside their Big Agnes Gunn Creek sleeping bag slots. The pad was easy for them to blow up and very comfortable to sleep on. The pad folded down very small and was easily stored inside the sleeping bag stuff sack along with their Big Agnes Air Core pillows without straining the sacks' seams.

I like the Kokatat Orbit Tour Life Jacket a lot. It's not bulky. It's easy to adjust the fit. There's plenty of room to allow arm movement and shoulder rotation without restricting movement. It's a type III PFD. But I can't give it 4 stars because I find the pullover style difficult and slightly uncool.

Coleman Roadtrip Pro Grill: big enough to feed a crowd, if you have the room

Coleman Roadtrip Pro Grill

Coleman Roadtrip Pro Grill

Rating for this product: 4 August 18, 2008

The Coleman Roadtrip Pro Grill is big. It's heavy. It has enough room to cook up a meal for a family of 7 -- we used it all weekend. If you take your family car camping and have enough room in your trunk for it, this grill is a great pick, but it's heavy. It's built for the 16.4 oz propane cylinders but if you're cooking for more than one or two people you're going to blow through a cylinder every meal. It would make more sense to get the adapter and use the 20-pound propane tank with it. It heats up fast and heats evenly. Clean-up is reasonably easy. Did I mention how heavy it is?

It's all included in the box with a great directions page. The only tricky part is the bowline. If, like me, it's been a long time since you tied one of these (something about the rabbit hopping out of a hole and around a tree... ), just hop on YouTube. It will come back to you in about 3 minutes. The hardware is solid.
