Ultimate ATC

Black Diamond ATC Guide

Black Diamond ATC Guide

Rating for this product: 5 July 25, 2009

It has all features available, it's easy to use, cheaper than petzl(what isn't). Great for the gym, sport or trad. Medium and high friction modes, autolocking, you can use a cordelette or a carabinner to help you release the brake. You can belay two climbers on single ropes or one with half/twin ropes on virtually any useable rope diameter. You can rappel off the medium friction side, with a trickier setup you can also rappel with autolock.

Mad Rock Frenzy Climbing Shoe - Men's

July 25, 2009

You should get the smallest you can bear, not hurting, but your toes should be slightly curved, it does make a big difference. With other brands you usually need to get one size smaller than your street shoe size, Mad Rock already takes that into consideration, usually you'll need half a size bigger. Also try out different shoes, some may adjust to your feet better, shape matters. When I started climbing I got big sized pretty comfortable shoes, It felt great at first but after 2 or 3 months you'll notice you need a better grip, and more sensitivity, otherwise you'll have to stick to medium or large footholds. Your fingers shouldn't move at all inside, you'll probably have to take them off between your first climbs, but that's the way it's supposed to be. Remember these would give almost half a size, while unlined leather ones will give up to a full size after a while.

Black Diamond Contact Strap Crampon

June 27, 2009

I don't see why they shouldn't. I don't have those shoes but I have tried full strap crampons on softer hiking boots with no problems. Hope this helps...

Black Diamond Contact Strap Crampon

June 27, 2009

I think you need at least a stiff heel for these to stay on. They will work better on stiff soles. Hope this helps...

Black Diamond Nylon Daisy Chain - 18mm

June 27, 2009

Dinex is newer than nylon, twice the price and you actually shave around 30 grams, i don't think you'll notice the difference unless you carry a lot of equipment. I use this as a personal anchor, just remember not to clip more than one loop! (http://www.bdel.com/videos/daisy.html)

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness

Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness

Rating for this product: 5 June 27, 2009

You can probably go without the adjustable leg loops, but they add a little versatility in case you also use them on winter with thick pants. Other than that its pretty light and comfortable.

MSR Fuel Bottles

MSR Fuel Bottles

Rating for this product: 5 June 27, 2009

These bottles will last until you loose them- there's no way of breaking them. Also cheaper than other brands. The cap has a big loop for clipping it to your backpack and also two small holes inside to handle the fuel without spilling. In Aconcagua the porters use mules to get your stuff to BC, this is your best option, no leaks at all. Hope this helps.

Epic down jacket

The North Face Nuptse Down Jacket - Men's

The North Face Nuptse Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 27, 2009

Awesome for it's price, I bought it on sale here and I have been really satisfied with the warmth, weight, and quality of this product. Just to clarify, it doesn't have an insulated hood, so the one it has is mostly worthless. Other than that it's perfect, just be careful, on cold days it gets people really envious!! I paired it with a TNF Mountain Light GTX shell (zip-in compatible) and it rocks!!

Great technical shell, it really outperforms my older jacket (Ultrex shell) in all aspects. Also I paired this up with a matching TNF Nuptse down jacket(zip-in compatible) and couldn't be happier!!

Mountain Hardwear Lyell -15 Sleeping Bag: -15 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 June 27, 2009

Last years version Lyell SL worked great on my hike up Cerro Aconcagua, kept me really warm at around -10F and the bag remained dry on the inside at all times, most other bags were soaked. Awesome bag. All I recomend is getting a compression sack, the one provided is not too good.

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2008

Great stove, though to simmer but with time you'll get it, just don't over pump it. You can pretty much burn anything with this stove, which is great when you are far away or just lazy about finding a camping store to get canisters. Be ultra careful if using it inside your tent, this thing is a torch and you are playing with liquid fuel. Have in mind this stove is a no-no for TSA agents, you must clean them really good before getting on a plane, and sometimes even if it is clean they'll just take it. Also some crazy lady from Aloha Airlines may think you are some kind of a terrorist(it happened).

Petzl DUO LED 5 Headlamp

August 23, 2008

They do now! http://www.backcountry.com/store/PTZ0186/Petzl-Duobelt-LED-14-Headlamp.html------------------------------------------------------------------More diodes doesn't necessarily equate to more lumens (brightness), and the definitely equal greater power draw. I'd seriously recommend the LED 5 if you think it'll meet your needs.Backcountry doesn't stock the Duo LED 14 lamp right now, but all of these guys should be able to help you.http://www.google.com/products?q=petzl+duo+14&btnG=Search+Products

Windproof Bunker

The North Face Spectrum 23 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

The North Face Spectrum 23 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 August 1, 2008

I've been using this tent for a year now, mountaineering in the Andes, close to Aconcagua(will be right there next summer).
It's totally amazing, no stabilizing strings at all, and it's seriously unbelievable stable, I've spent some nights where I was scared to stay out because of the wind, IT WAS RAGING out there, the tent didn't even feel the stress.
Condensation might be a problem in humid places though, it's very dry here and I still get some condensation in the morning.
In my opinion perfect for high altitude expeditions, I've used it over the snow many times without any problems.
It's also really light, you can use this solo without excessive overweight.
Only one complain: no pockets, just one next to your feet, which is not really useful.
