Stomping Grounds:
Chugach & Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska -
Bio:
My true life in the outdoors began before moving to Alaska, where my old stomping grounds were the Adirondacks. While there, I climbed every 4,000-foot high peak to become an Adirondack 46er, an endeavor which took less than two years. Perhaps someday I will return to work on my Winter 46, but I think it's safe to say those days are, for the most part, behind me.
While hiking and camping are staples I still greatly enjoy, in Alaska I've taken on the challenge of becoming a fundamentally sound technical climber and skiier. Mountaineering is my passion, but ice climbing is right along with it, and learning the art of Telemark skiing has advanced tremendously in my second season.
My goal? Autonomy. Nothing in the world is more freeing than climbing a mountain, while being able to independently take all the necessary steps to complete that task in a competent and responsible manner that always allows for the advancement of one's knowledge.
The mountains are phenomenal teachers...if you listen to them.
"The hardest part of climbing is getting out of town."

JHypers's Intro to Alaska Winter Mountaineering (semi-technical, non-glaciated)
Created April 11, 2010
A good way to train yourself for bigger, more remote mountains in Alaska is to get out into the mellower mountains frequently. Those who live near Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley have the perfect training ground for big mountain climbs, as they are right next to the front range of the Chugach Mountains.
Not sure about your travelling ability on snow or ice?
Want to learn how to self-arrest or glissade?
Need a crash course in winter camping?
This gear list will break down everything you'll need, based on my own personal experience and that of others I know, for a 2-3 day trip in the front-range mountains of Alaska.
***This is partially a wish list. I will list the gear I use (or would use if I owned it), or equivalents if the exact item is not sold at BC.-

Scarpa NTN Binding
January 22, 2011
I can't say for sure, but they don't look any narrower or wider than typical tele bindings. I have the O2 bindings, and they fit on my K2 Piste Stinx, which are quite narrow at the waist (~65 mm). I'd say as long as your skis aren't any narrower than 60 mm, these would fit.

Osprey Packs Argon 110 Backpack - 6700-7100cu in
February 10, 2009
The Osprey Switch series of packs aren't nearly as large as the Argon series, but they are specifically designed for snowsports. You can attach skis, snowboards and snowshoes with ease. However, these packs are designed for day trips, so that might not be what you're looking for.

Westcomb Specter LT Jacket - Men's
September 6, 2008
If you're in mild winter conditions (20-35F) your technical shell over a mid layer should be plenty warm enough for a high-exertion day. In some cases, you might only need a base layer under your shell.
