Mountain Hardwear Desna Fleece Jacket - Men's

I'm a lil lost reading the sizing reviews. I have a weird build b/c I wieghtlift to maintain b/w a meat-head triangle and an athletic, lean build. I'm 5'10.5" - 156 lbs (due to knee surgery, normally 168) - 42" chest - 30" sleeve (horrible ape index) - 28" waist. I want to buy this mainly as a multi-pitch belay jacket that doubles as a casual jacket. How exactly "athletically-fit" is this jacket? I'm having a hard time fitting myself in the sizing chart and completely lost trying to figure out a semi-casual fit size.

Mammut Trion Guide 45 + 7 Backpack - 2746cu in

May 3, 2012

Does the butterfly frame make enough of a difference to push pack decision one way or another if the pack carries the weight well anway? My previous packs only used a simple plastic framesheet so I used to not think too much about suspension until I tried the BD system and was blown away. I'm torn between the mammut trion guide 45 or the rei pinnacle 50 which I can get for about half the cost.

This diesel headlamp saved my butt

Princeton Tec Apex Pro Headlamp

Princeton Tec Apex Pro Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 April 30, 2012

My friend asked me to come with him (aka have another guy just incase a sticky situation arose) on a whitewater rafting trip with his wife and her 2 female friends. The water level was low, there were lots of non-moving flatwater, and we had a ton of mileage to cover to make the campground before nightfall as planned. The campground was a small clearing where the cliffs broke and overshooting it would mean trouble. The girls were more interested in lounging in the sun than paddling which left me to awkwardly guide a whitewater raft by myself. We got caught in the moonless night and between trying to navigate shallow rocky sections and constantly pulling the raft off rock, this light was the only one out of 5 with enough throw to navigate a course down the river and desperately find the campground. The light output and waterproofing was everything I needed to get out of this hairy situation.

I've also used this whitewater kayaking in class 3 rapids at night. The waterproofing and tough body making rolling with this a non-issue.

The new model is 200 lumens and although my 130 lumen apex works just fine, I'm going to buy it anyway.

On a sidenote... I had to buy a headlamp with less output for getting around the campsite, hiking, and my favorite night climbing. This light is just too bright for those applications. It works for hiking, but you really don't need that much light, and a lamp with less power and longer life means less batteries = less weight.

P.S - anyone know what led/driver they're using in the 130 & 200 lumen models? I was thinking about switching out my 130 for a more powerful one. Not that its feasible, but imagine running a Luminus CST-90 in it (2700 lumens, 700m throw, 13.5 Amp max drive)!

Osprey Packs Variant 52 Backpack - 3000-3400cu in

April 24, 2012

I'm in love with osprey packs. I use my talon 33 for everything, from vacationing, climbing daypack, to a 4 day dacks pack. What it doesn't work well for is lugging hiking&climbing gear, extended vacations, or holding skis.

Does anyone have any direct experience using the variant 52 vs the mammut trion guide 45+7? I'm so torn between the two.

Another awesome POC product

POC Lobes Goggle

POC Lobes Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 January 9, 2012

I love the design.
I love the color.
I love the lens and lack of spherical distortion.
I love the optical clarity.
I love the field of view.
I love the fit w poc helmets.
I love the rubber lined strap that holds the goggle to any helmet without a goggle clip.

One thing I found out today is that the lenses do not take to well to impacts. I have the pink frame gold/green lens combo. I took a SL gate to the face and it actually chipped the lens coating off, something that doesn't really happen with my carerra kimeriks. Now I need to buy a new lens...

If you're running SL gates, make sure you have your chin guard on.

Went broke for these

ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxer Brief - Men's

ExOfficio Give-N-Go Boxer Brief - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2010

These things worked great and are really comfortable. I bought my initial pair for weekend trips in the ADKs. Then I started using them for the gym, and then for skiing. I eventually found myself wearing them weekly and started asking myself why I still wore regular boxer briefs. So I took a trip down to my local store and pretty much went broke buying enough pairs to last me a week.

Yeah, they're that comfy!

Athletic build 5'10" 170lbs 30" waist & large quads. I chose the M for fear that the legs would be tight in the S. The waist still fits comfortably.

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

December 21, 2009

Anyone know how durable this jacket is? I'm an east coast ski racer and take A LOT of high speed slides over rough ice. Will this survive? I'd hate to ruin such a beautiful shell...

Stoic eVent Stash Shell - Men's

December 21, 2009

This might be a dumb question, but I'm new to the world of technical layering. I just bought this shell and will be using this primarily for skiing in temps between -30*F to 40*F among other things. What do you wear under an uninsulated shell to be comfortable in temps that cold? Usually I just throw on an underarmour, hoodie, and my current phenix ski jacket but I heard you can be a lot more comfortable (aka not sweating and overheating) layering properly. I'm a big fan of no bulk.
