The Mountain Manor is the replacement for the Trailhead series. I have set up and used both, and the Mountain Manor was a needed update. The pole hub system is much easier to use than the sleeves on the Trailhead - and faster to set up (not to mention lighter...).

Bombo - The Mountain Manor is the replacement for the Trailhead series, and there are a number of improvements. The new hub pole system cuts down the number of pole sections needed making the tent significantly lighter - and the clip system (as opposed to sleeves on the Trailhead), make for a much easier set up. Some really nice upgrades.

I think a 15 degree bag is the most versatile range for 3 season outdoor use. I think it would do well if you are spending time camping outdoors, but if you are going to be hitting hostels and using it more as an indoor bag, I think something in the 30-40 degree range would be more comfortable and also save you space and weight.

Hi Don - I have never been hit with oversized charges with the XL when flying. The issue that I normally run into is that it is hard to keep the weight of a fully loaded XL below weight restrictions (50-70 pounds depending on carrier). I have been finding going with 2 smaller duffels (like larges), keeps me below weight on a single duffel instead of trying to get it all in 1. If you aren't loading the XL with super heavy gear, I think you will be fine.

The windwall 2 is going to be the warmer of the two, as it similar in weight to something like a 200 weight fleece, where the Bionic is softshell that has a farily light fleece lining (backer). The main advantage to the Bionic is going to be weather resistance - it is going to perform better if you run into wet weather as it has a DWR exterior treatment as well as a laminate behind the softshell that will also contribute to it being a better outerwear piece if it gets stormy.

Hi Michael - this wouldn't be my first choice for the type of trip that you describe. The Mantel is a pretty specific lightweight climbing pack. Here are a couple of suggestions for you that I think will have better organization, and also be more rugged for travel:
-North Face Overhaul 40 (one the best travel packs, and also good if you are going to carry a laptop)
-North Face Heckler Backpack (34 liter daypack)
-North Face Terra 40 (good if you like top-loading style packs - also the largest of the bunch at 40 liters)
All three of these are bigger than the Mantel, which at 26 liters sounds really small for a 5 day trip.

Hi Gina - as long as you aren't too far north of the rest of us, this should be a good spring/fall jacket. It also make a good layering piece if it gets colder than expected. Hey Mike - This would be a fine bag for general summer use. The type of synthetic insulation that is used in this bag isn't going to make this one of the most compressible bags that The North Face makes. Here are a couple of options that you might consider that are womens specific, warmer, and more compressible due to either using down insulation or a more compressible type of synthetic insulation. Hello - There are adjustable straps that connect the fly to the tent body (as fabric stretches over time and needs to be tensioned over time...) - and the picture looks like the straps are not pulled in as tight as I would set up the tent. So to answer your question, the tent fly can be pulled in more tightly to the bottom of the tent body. One last thing to point out, if you look at the waterproof floor on the tent, it comes up about 4 or 5 inches on the side of the tent, so this is ultimately how you stay dry and still allow ventilation into your tent.

Hi - The bag is not waterproof - although it is highly water resistant. The pack material itself is a coated nylon, which is waterproof, but the seams are not sealed - so eventually you will get some moisture coming through in heavy rain. However, you shouldn't be worried about things getting wet unless you are out for a prolonged period in really bad weather. There are also rain covers available that can give you extra protection for laptops etc.

I have logged 6 or 7 days in this jacket and love the ipod control. It is the only one that I know of that uses a small joystick type of deal instead of buttons that are typically hard to use with gloves. Up and down controls volume, forward and back controls tracks, and pushing the joystick in pauses the ipod. Really happy with the usability, and no problems with the cold. I have been out in low teens, but probably not too much colder than than that, although I don't think this would have any effect on the interface - it is the battery on your ipod that you have to worry about.

It really is designed more as a ski fit. Here are some alternatives that would be better for mountaineering/climbing:
-North Face Mountain Pant
-North Face Mammatus Bib (personal favorite)
-North Face Litespeed Pant
Any of these should serve you well and have a better cut/design for climbing.

The reason this jacket doesn't have any venting, is because it is a hybrid that used windstopper fabric in the front of the jacket, and a stretch fabric everywhere else that is very breathable. This eliminates the need for any zip vents-

The McMurdo is definitely the heavier insulated jacket of the two. The 550 down rating tells you that the two jackets use the same type of down insulation, but it doesn't tell you how much of it is used to insulate the jacket.

Hi Noah - 60 grams is a pretty light insulation package for really cold weather. I would recommend looking at jackets that are either down insulated or have at least 100 grams of synthetic insulation. Here are a couple of suggestions:
Down Insulated: The North Face Tempest Down or Helicity Jackets
Synthetic Insulation: The North Face Boufet or Plasma Thermal Jackets
The down insulated jackets will be the way to go for super cold conditions.

Hi - Here are a couple of ideas for you. The first couple are fitted down pieces because they will keep you super warm, but won't be really bulky:
-North Face Destiny Down Jacket (insulated hood)
-North Face Siren Jacket (No hood)
I think the down jackets would be ideal if you don't need the jacket to be waterproof, but if you think you need something that would be both warm and waterproof, I would look at something like:
-North Face Auxiliary Down (Gore-Tex insulated with 600 fill down)
-North Face Down Triclimate (waterproof shell w/removable down liner jacket)
The down jackets would be great if it is cold enough that you aren't worried about really wet snow or rain, but the other two might be better if you are going to be out in any wet weather.

These two have the same amount of insulation (100 G Primaloft)- so there isn't going to be a big difference in warmth - they are both warm. The biggest difference is that the Plasma is taped and waterproof where the Optimus has some additional water resistance on the hood and shoulders, but is not waterproof. Both great jackets, but the choice will really depend on what you are going to use it for.

Hey Mike - The Honcho is going to be warmer than the Plasma Thermal. I look at the Honcho as more of a belay jacket (maybe a good resort ski jacket as well), where the Plasma is probably a little more versatile in the things that you could use it for because of the lighter Primaloft insulation package. The Khumbu is a 300 weight fleece. The Khumbu would hold up well for you, the fabric will be very pil resistant for a very long time. The Bionic is a nice choice as well - certainly a bomber fabric, and more wind/water resistant than the Khumbu, but obviously not as warm with a lighter fleece backing. You can always layer under it, so the Bionic would make a nice choice.

This jacket has a 100 gram insulation package which seems fine for the application that you describe, but if you are worried about your daughter staying warm, there are many other North Face jackets on the Backcountry site that have 200 grams is insulation or more (Blizzard, Shades Away), or you could look at one of the down jackets (Nuptse, Aconcagua, Moondoggie) which are all going to be very warm for just about any winter conditions.

I can't speak too much to the Venta, but typically you are going to give up most of the stretch when you opt for a windstopper membrane - it does not have a lot of stretch. If you are looking for a little extra warmth from this type of jacket, you may want to check out the Sentinel Thermal Jacket - it has a high loft fleece liner that is super comfortable and warmer than the Sentinel.
Hope this helps

For the temperatures that you listed, I would think the Pumori or Khumbu would be the more usable weights. From there, it is really just a matter of fabric difference - the Pumori is a Polartec fleece, while the Khumbu is a proprietary fleece. They are both nice, I like the clean looks of the Pumori - but obviously that is totally subjective.

If you don't plan on using this pack for alpine climbing, I can't really recommend it for you- their are some sacrifices that you make with climbing packs (padding, suspension)that aren't necessary if you don't plan on using it for this application. Here are 2 packs that I would recommend more for hiking/camping:
-North Face Crestone
-North Face El Lobo

-North Face Momentum Tight (heavier weight)
-North Face Impulse Pant (mid-weight)

Hi Kurtis- The Sedition Jacket is Gore Softshell, and the backing is 3 different types of fleece - heavier in the back and chest, with lighter fleece under the arms and down around the hem of the jacket (so it doesn't pick up snow). The fleece backer is going to add some additional warmth for sure, but not to the degree of an insulated shell, so you will still need to layer with this piece on cold days. It is a nice compromise however- this jacket is more usable in greater variety of weather conditions than an insulated shell.

Hello - I have a pair of these boots, and they fit my narrow feet very well (my feet are aren't wide in the toebox however..). I have found with these boots and many other insulted boots that I have owned that the insulation tends to take the shape of my foot, and this boot was no exception. In general I think it is tough to find a custom fit with a 400 gram insulated boot, but I have been very happy with these fitting a narrow foot.

Hi Kate - This is a common misconception with down jackets. The 800 fill rating does not mean it will be warmer than a 700 fill jacket - it simply tells you the grade of the down that goes into the jacket, not how much of it goes into the jacket. In the case of the Nuptse jacket, it probably has at least twice as much down fill than the Thunder jacket, so the difference between 700 fill and 800 fill won't outweigh the total amount of insulation going into the jacket. The Thunder jacket is made more for milder temperatures and also to be used as a layering piece, where the Nuptse is your middle of the winter super insulated down jacket.

Dan - I would like to clarify some of the statements Julian makes regarding Windwall which I do not find to be accurate. Comparing Wind Pro to Windwall is not comparing apples to apples. Wind Pro blocks about 4 times more wind than traditional fleece or about 60 CFM, and accomplishes this through a more dense weave. The Windwall on the other hand accomplishes it's windblocking characteristics through a laminate at about 14 CFM. Wind Pro lets through more wind through but is more breathable, while Windwall blocks more wind but is less breathable - like most fabrics from good companies, it's not a matter of trust - just finding the characteristics that fit your needs and budget.

Hello - just fleece on the interior. The windblocking characteristics of the fleece come from how dense the weave of the fabric, and is about 4 times more wind resistant than traditional fleece. The nice part is that there is no laminate to keep the fabric from being super breathable - nice combo.

Hello - here are my suggestions to you: if you get cold a lot, or are outside for long periods of time in the middle of the winter, and don't mind a little additional bulk, then I would probably move to the Arctic Parka - it will certainly keep you warmer with less need to do more layering. On the other hand, if you don't mind adding a more substantial layer under it on the coldest days, the Insulated Grace is the more versatile piece for more of the winter and the shoulder seasons. Unless you are a person that gets cold very frequently, I actually this level of insulation will work very well for you.

Hi Christine - The North Face's policy has always been to stay away from temperature ratings with regards to it's apparel line. It is very subjective from one person to another as far as their personal physiology, and what kind of activity the jacket is going to be used for.
Activity use will have the greatest impact on how I recommend different jackets to different people. Triclimates like the Kira tend not be pieces that people use in high aerobic activities like cross country skiing. So the bottom line is that I would probably recommend this insulation package without much layering under it down to about the low teens for general use. Below that, I would probably recommend one of system jackets like The North Face Down Triclimate for colder temperature ranges because of it's 550 fill down liner jacket that will provide more warmth that the 100 gram synthetic liner that the Kira uses.
Hope this helps-

Hello- unfortunately that is generally the nature of traditional pile fleece, and I don't think it is specific to the fleece used in the Khumbu jacket. Being the owner of 2 short hair dogs, traditional pile fleece isn't really an option for me, and I have switched over to is generally refered to as "hard face fleece". These types of fleece have much more dense weaves than pile fleece, and deal much better with dog hair and picking stuff up. An example of this type of jacket is The North Face Momentum Jacket. The other nice advantage of the hard face fabrics is that they tend to have more stretch as well.
Sorry that I don't have any suggestions for your current jacket.

Hi Bobbie- comfort ranges vary pretty drastically from person to person, but in general I would probably call this jacket comfortable down to the mid 40 degree range. With regards to wind resistance, that won't be one of the strong points for this jacket as it is high loft fleece without any type of wind barrier. If you are looking for fleece with some type of wind blocking barrier, here are a couple of suggestions:
-The North Face Windwall 2 jacket

Hello - this platform was really designed for some North Face athletes that wanted a good hybrid on-road/off-road shoe. TNF doesn't specifically design shoes for on-road only applications, but this outsole will work well on the road. It is important to note that this is a neutral platform, and does not have any posting.

K- It really depends on what type of activity you are going to be using the jacket for whether it is going to be warm enough or not. It is a ski jacket, and has a decent insulation package for a wide range of temperatures when layering appropriately. If you are looking for more of an around town jacket for cold days in New England, I would probably recommend some other jackets:
-North Face Nuptse Down Jacket
-North Face Gotham Jacket
-North Face Destiny Down Jacket
-North Face Tempest Down Jacket
The Tempest might be interesting if you are looking for a warm around town jacket that you could also ski in.

Hey Jaydee - The Agency jacket does have hand pockets. Regarding warmth, you probably would need to layer with this jacket. Hello- All of these jackets have pretty different properties to them, so let me give you some extra info:
-Denali Hooded - warm enough for your temperature range, you would probably need a shell to give you extra wind/rain or snow protection
-Bionic Thermal - not quite as warm as the Denali, but better wind/wet weather protection. Good all around choice.
-Nuptse - warmest of the bunch, but only really useful at the lower part of your temp range - maybe 25-35.
-Redpoint Jacket - Very versatile piece for your temp range- warm, good wind protection. Not waterproof , but good DWR treatment.
-Bionic Hoodie - another good all around performer, doesn't have the high loft fleece that the Bionic Thermal has, so you will have to layer under this one more than any of the others at the lower temp range.
All in all, I think the Redpoint and the Bionic Thermal would probably be the most versatile for this trip.

Hey Jon - I think I can help you with this one. The interiors on the jackets are pretty close, with a slight edge going to to the Sentinel with regards to feel- it is a little softer. The fleece interiors are about the same in loft, so I wouldn't say one is warmer than the other. The exterior softshells are quite different- the Bionic is heavier and feels pretty burly. The Sentinel is lighter and has a much more soft feel to it. Last, the fit on the Sentinel is more athletic and fitted, where the Bionic is higher volume and not as articulated. Breathability is going to be similar.

Hi - The Bionic Jacket is as water resistant as you will find in a softshell jacket, as the only place that water can get through is the seams (softshell jackets typically aren't seam sealed due to construction difficulties). You would need to be in a consistent downpour for a while before you would see any water get through this piece. If that is a problem, here are a couple of suggestions that are seam sealed and totally waterproof, if you are looking for more of a rain shell:
-North Face Venture Jacket
-North Face Stretch Diad Jacket (more technical lighter weight, more trim cut)
-North Face Ella Rain Jacket (thought I would throw in a lifestyle rain jacket if you aren't looking for something technical)

That is a tough question to answer with line as broad as The North Face. In general products do keep evolving, but there is no set schedule for changes. Some categories see a lot more changes than others - for example a lot of the ski/board jackets see more changes because people expect a lot more changes in style. Jackets like the Bionic are staple pieces (#2 seller in the line), so they won't see as many major overhauls.

There must be a mistake in the specs. The insulated version has a 60 Gram Heatseeker insulation package, where the uninsulated pant has a Thermo stretch liner. I think you are going to find this jacket too heavy for those types of applications. Typically people are going to stay away from fixed insulation pieces like this for backpacking, because it will be too warm. If you want something for backpacking and mountaineering, I think you are going to want to find a good shell that you can layer with if you plan on using in colder and warmer conditions like it sounds you are. Here are a few suggestions:
1. North Face Serac (stretch Gore pac lite)
2. North Face Mammatus Jacket (Gore Pro)
3. North Face Heathen Jacket (Gore Pro)
4. North Face On Site Jacket (Hyvent DT)

The fabric itself is waterproof, but the seams aren't sealed. So the bottom line is that you will stay dry in snow and even really wet snowy conditions. I won't sub as a rain shell in a down pour, but it will keep you dry in anything else..

I would contact The North Face's warranty dept (866-715-3223) and see if this is something that they can help you with. They may be able to help you with the bite valve as well, or point you in the right direction. Regarding the bite valve, do a search for "nalgene bite valve" and you can find replacements for about $4-

It currently does have a drawstring. With regards to breathability, this jacket does have a laminate in it. This helps weather resistance (100% windblocking, and very water resistant). It breathability is your #1 concern, this isn't going to be the best jacket for you. Here are a couple of suggestions that don't have any laminate, but keep in mind that they won't be as weather-resistant either-

I think it would work, but it wouldn't be my first choice for a warmer weather shell because it is lined and has a pretty heavy shell fabric. Probably fine for occasional spring use, but if you want to use it for backpacking or any other use where packability and weight are going to be an issue, I would look at something like The North Face Venture Jacket or Resolve Jacket.

The only way I would recommend this tent to you is if you are going to be doing a significant about of winter camping, and are worried about facing conditions with significant snow accumulation that this tent is designed for. If snow isn't the primary condition for this tent, I probably wouldn't recommend it for a couple reasons- the ventilation probably won't be sufficient for family camping, and it isn't light enough to really be considered a backpacking tent. Check out The North Face Double Headed Toad 4 person tent - I think this might be a good alternative for you and be plenty warm and you will save about 4 pounds in weight.

It is 600 fill european goose down. It is washable, but I advise people not to wash down any more than they have to. Most stains can be taken care of by hand. Every time you wash a down jacket, the feathers lose a little bit of the natural oils that they need to keep the down's loft. Like I said, it is washable, but you want to keep washings to a minimum.

Hello - here is my take on these two jackets. The sizing is going to be similar- if you are going with a small in the Atlantic, than I would go small in the Arctic. They are both very warm jackets for harsh winters, but due to the extra length in the Arctic, it will be the warmer of the two.

The fabric itself actually is waterproof, but the pant is not seam sealed, so cannot be called waterproof - however, this is pant is probably the most weather resistant softshell fabrics on the market. Unless it is raining, you are going to stay plenty dry. They have a fleece backer on them, so in mild conditions you will be fine without long underwear, cold days you will obviously want to wear an extra layer-

It is the most expensive and reliable type of waterproofing system in boots right now, sometimes manufacturers just use panels where boots are exposed to moisture or use a treatment on the outside of the boot, but an "insert" or "gore-tex bootie" (same things), are really the best way to make truly waterproof boot.

It's not waterproof because like most packs it is not cost effective to seam seal, but the pack material itself is coated and waterproof. I don't know of any waterproof computer bags out there, but I personally would not worry about enough water getting through the seams on a pack to do damage unexpectedly. You would have to be out in a storm for quite a while before this would really be an issue.

It is water resistant as it has a DWR treatment. If you need more than water resistance, you could look at something like The North Face Solar Flare sleeping bag- this bag uses a waterproof face fabric (although it is not seam sealed so not totally waterproof) and gives you a much higher level of weather-proofing in a sleeping bag. It is also down fill instead of synthetic, and will pack down quite a bit smaller. The other option might be to look at something like the Flight Bivy or Backpacker Bivy to give you some versatility when you need that extra water resistance.

I would compare this jacket to a 200 weight fleece. Compared to the Denali Wind Pro, the Pamir is lighter (Denali is 300 weight). Another big difference is that Winderstopper is a total windblocking laminate, while the Wind Pro fabic is not - it blocks about 4 times more wind than traditional fleece.
Bottom line:
Pamir: more versatile weight, more weather resistance
Denali Wind Pro: Warmer, more breathable, heavier

This jacket was designed for skiing and snowboarding. It comes from North Face's Freeride line, so it will run larger than sizing from traditional alpine ski apparel companies. It is also uninsulated, so good if you like to layer for a wide range of temperatures. Hope this helps.

White is always going to be more difficult to clean than other colors, but synthetic fabrics like on the Atlantic aren't going to absorb as much as other fabircs. I have always found that a lot of stuff can simply be wiped off these types of fabrics without having to wash the jacket. The Denim blue is an awesome color - I think it would go fine with jeans.

It's good if you are looking for an insulated waterproof shell, but it really depends on what you are going to be using it for. If it is just for pure warmth, the 100 gram insulation package in jacket is not going to compare to something like a 700 fill down jacket (which I would prefer as an around town type of piece). 100 gram is fine if you are will to layer under it on really cold days, and the climate will really determine whether you need that waterproof shell material or not. Where I am in the mountains, it is a dry snow, so the waterproof shell isn't as important to me - my down jacket will keep me warm, and I don't have to worry about it getting too wet in the winter. Hope this helps.

I haven't used the Flash 65 but the feature set looks comparable. I don't know what the REI warranty is, but North Face is lifetime. With regards to waterproofing, the Terra uses a coated nylon fabric, which is waterproof except for the seams- like most packs they aren't seam sealed. I personally don't carry any type of rain cover, and I can tell you from personal experience that it take quite a sustained rainfall to have to worry about any real amount of leakage through seams. If you keep your sleeping bag and clothes in stuff sacks in the pack, then even less to worry about.

I wouldn't call the fit baggy on the Bionic, but if you are looking for true performance fit in a softshell jacket, I would check out The North Face Elixir Jacket. Trade offs are that the fabric is not fleece backed and laminated like the Bionic (less warm, not quite as wind/weather proof), benefits are that it has much more stretch and breathability if these are the characteristics that you are looking for.

These two jackets use the same Hyvent DT waterproof/breathable coating, so functionally these two are going to be very similar. -waterproof zip has an updated look

This is a softshell jacket (stretch woven), while the Windwall jacket is a windblocking fleece jacket. The Bionic is going to be a better outerwear jacket - very water resistant and totally windproof (where the Windwall is about 95% windblocking). The Parka is 2" longer. I think the best jacket really depends on what you are going to be using it for, as well as the looks. The jacket is probably a better choice for camping / outdoor recreation due to lighter weight and packability. The parka might be the better choice for more of an around-town piece. At the end of the day, the look probably better differentiates these two pieces- jackets tend to be more popular in the western half of the country, parkas on the east coast...Hope this wasn't too much info.

You should definitely go long for someone 6'3". I am also 6'3", and long is the only way to go. The Mammoth is a 20 degree bag, the Goliath is essentially the same bag at a 0 degree rating.

The ultimate solution is The North Face Twin Peaks two person sleeping bag. If you want to go the two sleeping route, stick with the same manufacturer, and if you are buying mummy bags, I recommend buying one left hand zip and one right- this way both hoods will be facing the same direction when you zip them together.

This is definitely a warm jacket for the upstate NY climate. Keep in mind that it is 3/4 length. If you don't want something this long, look at something like the Nuptse Jacket.

This is definitely not a low rise pant. If you are look for a convertible that is lower rise than this pant, check out the Paramount Porter Convertible. It has a fitted waist instead of an elastic waist and is lower rise.

The Redpoint Jacket is a nylon shell with 100 grams of Primaloft insulation through the entire jacket and sleeves. The Redpoint Hybrid has a nylon shell fabric in the body with a lighter insulation - 60 grams of Primaloft, but the sleeves and side panels on the jacket are a powerstetch type material. The hybrid is quite a bit lighter, and makes a better pure layering piece, while the Redpoint Jacket makes a good outerwear piece and a heavier layering piece. Hope this helps-

There are two main vents on this bivy- a large mesh panel down at the foot of the bivy, and another vent right above the head of the bivy. The nice part is that they are both designed so that they can be open even if it is raining for good ventilation.

That feather issue was more of a problem with the previous model to the Thunder Jacket (Flash Jacket). You are always going to lose a few feathers on 800 fill jackets, but the issue that people were referring to is called "punch through" when the down was added to the jacket before the baffles were sewn, creating more opportunity for feathers to get pushed through the fabric. This was corrected on the Thunder jacket.

It can be washed, but I would not recommend washing down frequently. Most stains can be cleaned from this jacket because the face fabric is synthetic. People tend to wash down jackets too much, when the reality is that most stains can be wiped off with a damp cloth.

I don't think that length is an issue with this jacket. I wouldn't recommend it as a ski jacket however- I would look at something like the Amore Jacket or Destiny Down if you are looking for something down to ski in. They have powder skirts and are designed to be ski jackets.

This jacket is "critically seam taped". What this means is that the jacket does use a waterproof Hyvent coating, but not all seams are taped (just the ones that are most likely to see the most weather like shoulders). This is not going to be a problem for most, as this jacket is built for snow more than rain...

I think this coat will be way too warm for summer in Alaska. I would look at a rainshell (Venture Jacket would be good), and then an insulating layer like a Redpoint jacket. You can then have both of your bases covered- warm and dry.

I usually put a new DWR treatment on the exterior of my rain shells once a year. I doubt that your jacket isn't waterproof anymore, but if the shell fabric starts to absorb moisture, it can affect the breathability of a jacket. I prefer the spray-on treatments over the wash-in products.
