The North Face Inlux Insulated Jacket - Men's

Hi - For an everyday jacket to keep your brother warm, I would probably steer you toward a down jacket. They are so much more comfortable, really easy to get on and off, and very warm. Here are a couple of recommendations:
-North Face Tahoe Down Hooded
-North Face Prism Optimus Down Jacket

The Prism might be a little overkill because it is more of a technical jacket, but either one will keep him very warm and comfortable.

Hi Margaret - This would be a fine choice, but I will also recommend The North Face Venture Jacket. They are both lightweight and waterproof, but the Venture is unlined, so it is going to be a little more packable and slightly more breathable. They are both good options, but I prefer the Venture for a travel piece of gear.

The North Face Honcho Down Jacket - Men's

Hey Mike - The Honcho is going to be warmer than the Plasma Thermal. I look at the Honcho as more of a belay jacket (maybe a good resort ski jacket as well), where the Plasma is probably a little more versatile in the things that you could use it for because of the lighter Primaloft insulation package. It really depends on what you are going to use the jacket for that will determine the better jacket-

The North Face Windwall 1 Jacket - Men's

Hey Stomper- it will work, but it probably wouldn't be my first choice as a layering fleece because it has a windblocking membrane that will slightly limit breathibability. Here are a few other options that don't have membranes that will work well for layering:
-The North Face Momentum Jacket (powerstretch type matial - my favorite in the group)
-The North Face Bonded Rebel Full Zip Jacket (bonded fleece)

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Boys'

The Khumbu is a 300 weight fleece. The Khumbu would hold up well for you, the fabric will be very pil resistant for a very long time. The Bionic is a nice choice as well - certainly a bomber fabric, and more wind/water resistant than the Khumbu, but obviously not as warm with a lighter fleece backing. You can always layer under it, so the Bionic would make a nice choice.

This jacket has a 100 gram insulation package which seems fine for the application that you describe, but if you are worried about your daughter staying warm, there are many other North Face jackets on the Backcountry site that have 200 grams is insulation or more (Blizzard, Shades Away), or you could look at one of the down jackets (Nuptse, Aconcagua, Moondoggie) which are all going to be very warm for just about any winter conditions.

Hi Kurtis- The Sedition Jacket is Gore Softshell, and the backing is 3 different types of fleece - heavier in the back and chest, with lighter fleece under the arms and down around the hem of the jacket (so it doesn't pick up snow). The fleece backer is going to add some additional warmth for sure, but not to the degree of an insulated shell, so you will still need to layer with this piece on cold days. It is a nice compromise however- this jacket is more usable in greater variety of weather conditions than an insulated shell.

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Women's

November 9, 2009

Hi Kate - This is a common misconception with down jackets. The 800 fill rating does not mean it will be warmer than a 700 fill jacket - it simply tells you the grade of the down that goes into the jacket, not how much of it goes into the jacket. In the case of the Nuptse jacket, it probably has at least twice as much down fill than the Thunder jacket, so the difference between 700 fill and 800 fill won't outweigh the total amount of insulation going into the jacket. The Thunder jacket is made more for milder temperatures and also to be used as a layering piece, where the Nuptse is your middle of the winter super insulated down jacket.

The North Face Apex Bionic Thermal Softshell Jacket - Women's

November 6, 2009

Hi Abbie - The Bionic Jacket has light fleece backing on the interior of the jacket, while the Bionic Thermal has a high loft fleece on the interior. You get extra warmth with the high loft fleece, but it is probably the feel of it that makes it popular.... it does have a really nice feel to it.
Hope this helps

The North Face Ice Down Jacket - Men's

November 5, 2009

Hey Johnny - From you dimensions I would have said XXL, but if you have been comfortable in an XL McMurdo, I would go with the XL. These jackets have very similar fits, and in general run big.

The North Face Shugga One-Piece Snow Suit - Women's

November 5, 2009

Hi Ray - This one piece is made to have more of a freeride roomy fit, so I think you will be better off with the XL. It will also give her more room to wear a couple layers under it which will be nice if she gets cold a lot.

The North Face Box Shot Backpack - 2150cu in

November 5, 2009

Hi Casey - I think this pack is great and would serve you well- however you might want to check out The Surge and the On Site packs (also North Face)- they have dedicated laptop sleeves that you can access without going into the main compartment of the pack. I find this way more convenient if you access your laptop often or when traveling (airport etc.) They all work great, but I really like the dedicated laptop access-

The North Face Angstrom 30 Backpack - 1830cu in

November 5, 2009

Hey Jessie- This is probably the best pack that I can think of for the type of use that you describe. It has plenty of room for books etc., but is quite a bit lighter for hiking trips. It would be a great choice.

The North Face Pumori Jacket - Women's

November 5, 2009

I think you are going to find the sleeves too short on the XS, I would go with the small.

The North Face Mantel 26 Backpack - 1650cu in

November 5, 2009

Hi Ana - I think you are going to find this pack a little small for a multi-pitch pack, it was really designed as more of a sport climbing pack. I would look at The North Face Fulcrum 35 pack for the type of use that you are talking about. I have found this pack to be perfect in size for multi-pitch days, and the fabric will hold up better as well. There is a dedicated rope pocket on the front which I find to be really nice on approaches and walk-offs.

The North Face Sentinel Thermal Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 4, 2009

The closest thing that I can think of is The North Face STH Glove. They do not have the high loft fleece backing that this jacket does, but the softshell has a similar feel and the fit is great.
Hope this helps
