The North Face Insulated Grace Jacket - Women's

Hi Michelle - I don't think 100 grams of insulation is going to be adequate for the types of temps that you are talking about - here are some other suggestions for longer coats with higher insulation packages:
-The North Face Arctic Jacket (warmest of the bunch)
-The North Face Metropolis Jacket
-The North Face Tempest Down Jacket

I think all three of these would work well for a cold Canadian winter, and down is the way you are going to want to go for insulation.
Hope this helps-

Hi Henry- These pants will be 100% windblocking. There is a full side-zip version of these (Venture Side Zip Pant) that I think would be more convenient when using these pants with boots and over clothes - make sure you upsize as well to make room for pants-

Hi Paula - I would recommend checking out The North Face Modulation Jacket - it is very similar to the Insulated Varius Guide - both waterproof, same amount of insulation, similar price- but the Modulation has more ski specific features like a snow skirt and interior pockets for goggles etc. - Similar jackets, but the Modulation was designed as a more ski friendly piece.

The North Face Insulated Punky Jacket - Girls'

Hi Jen - This is a proprietary North Face synthetic fill - similar to something like Primaloft or Thinsulate. This jacket has a 100 gram insulation package which seems fine for the application that you describe, but if you are worried about your daughter staying warm, there are many other North Face jackets on the Backcountry site that have 200 grams is insulation or more (Blizzard, Shades Away), or you could look at one of the down jackets (Nuptse, Aconcagua, Moondoggie) which are all going to be very warm for just about any winter conditions.

The North Face Arctic Down Parka - Women's

Hi Gisele - I think it is going to be pretty tough to find a warmer jacket than the Arctic Parka. In that minus 40 degree type of stuff you are still going to need some layers under this jacket, but it is as warm as they come outside of an expedition type jacket like The North Face Prism Optimus jacket.

The North Face Sentinel Windstopper Softshell Jacket - Men's

I can't speak too much to the Venta, but typically you are going to give up most of the stretch when you opt for a windstopper membrane - it does not have a lot of stretch. If you are looking for a little extra warmth from this type of jacket, you may want to check out the Sentinel Thermal Jacket - it has a high loft fleece liner that is super comfortable and warmer than the Sentinel.

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Women's

November 13, 2009

For the temperatures that you listed, I would think the Pumori or Khumbu would be the more usable weights. From there, it is really just a matter of fabric difference - the Pumori is a Polartec fleece, while the Khumbu is a proprietary fleece. They are both nice, I like the clean looks of the Pumori - but obviously that is totally subjective.

The North Face Sedition III Jacket - Men's

November 10, 2009

Hi Kurtis- The Sedition Jacket is Gore Softshell, and the backing is 3 different types of fleece - heavier in the back and chest, with lighter fleece under the arms and down around the hem of the jacket (so it doesn't pick up snow). The fleece backer is going to add some additional warmth for sure, but not to the degree of an insulated shell, so you will still need to layer with this piece on cold days. It is a nice compromise however- this jacket is more usable in greater variety of weather conditions than an insulated shell.

The North Face Thunder Down Jacket - Women's

November 9, 2009

Hi Kate - This is a common misconception with down jackets. The 800 fill rating does not mean it will be warmer than a 700 fill jacket - it simply tells you the grade of the down that goes into the jacket, not how much of it goes into the jacket. In the case of the Nuptse jacket, it probably has at least twice as much down fill than the Thunder jacket, so the difference between 700 fill and 800 fill won't outweigh the total amount of insulation going into the jacket. The Thunder jacket is made more for milder temperatures and also to be used as a layering piece, where the Nuptse is your middle of the winter super insulated down jacket.

The North Face Denali Wind Pro Fleece Jacket - Men's

October 28, 2009

Dan - I would like to clarify some of the statements Julian makes regarding Windwall which I do not find to be accurate. Comparing Wind Pro to Windwall is not comparing apples to apples. Wind Pro blocks about 4 times more wind than traditional fleece or about 60 CFM, and accomplishes this through a more dense weave. The Windwall on the other hand accomplishes it's windblocking characteristics through a laminate at about 14 CFM. Wind Pro lets through more wind through but is more breathable, while Windwall blocks more wind but is less breathable - like most fabrics from good companies, it's not a matter of trust - just finding the characteristics that fit your needs and budget.

The North Face Aleutian Bx Sleeping Bag: 20-Degree Heatshield

October 28, 2009

Hi B.L. - That is strange, I have stuffed many Dolomites into stuff sacks, and haven't had any problems. Have you tried stuffing it into the sack without rolling it? This is usually my method. I have also stuffed plenty of Aleutians, and haven't had too much trouble with these either. Most of our bags aren't designed to be rolled - so give the stuff method a shot. There is also a feeling within our design team that it preferable with both tents and sleeping bags to fold materials over and over again in the same way, that over time that can stress the fabrics and insulations in the same areas, but when you stuff them that the impact is more random and spread out.
Hope this helps

The North Face Venture Jacket - Women's

October 28, 2009

If this jacket was a North Face performance fit I would probably point you toward a medium, but since it is their standard fit which more generous, I think you are going to be better fit in the small.
Hope this helps-

The North Face Elysium Down Jacket - Men's

October 28, 2009

Hey Chuck - These jackets are very close indeed, but here are the differences that I found:
-Elysium Jacket is 1.6 oz. lighter
-Phantom Jacket uses a 15D face fabric vs. and 20D for the Elysium (Elysium very slightly heavier shell fabric)
-Almost identical lengths, with the Phantom being .5 inches longer

I am not familiar with MH sizing, but you are a straight medium in the Elysium.
Hope this helps

I am going to disagree with Canadian Chica on this one and suggest that you go with the medium in this jacket.

The North Face Arctic Down Parka - Women's

October 27, 2009

Hello - here are my suggestions to you: if you get cold a lot, or are outside for long periods of time in the middle of the winter, and don't mind a little additional bulk, then I would probably move to the Arctic Parka - it will certainly keep you warmer with less need to do more layering. On the other hand, if you don't mind adding a more substantial layer under it on the coldest days, the Insulated Grace is the more versatile piece for more of the winter and the shoulder seasons. Unless you are a person that gets cold very frequently, I actually this level of insulation will work very well for you.

The North Face Liberation Pant - Men's

October 27, 2009

Hey Logan- This probably wouldn't be my first recommendation to you primarily because this is more of a ski pant than a climbing/backcountry pant. Keeping pretty close to your budget at $249 is The North Face Mountain Pant- also Gore, this pant has more rugged material, and Kevlar reinforcement in the kick patches. The other benefit with The Mountain Pant is full side zip for ventilation, and removable suspenders.

The North Face Kira Triclimate Jacket - Women's

October 27, 2009

Hi Christine - The North Face's policy has always been to stay away from temperature ratings with regards to it's apparel line. It is very subjective from one person to another as far as their personal physiology, and what kind of activity the jacket is going to be used for.
Activity use will have the greatest impact on how I recommend different jackets to different people. Triclimates like the Kira tend not be pieces that people use in high aerobic activities like cross country skiing. So the bottom line is that I would probably recommend this insulation package without much layering under it down to about the low teens for general use. Below that, I would probably recommend one of system jackets like The North Face Down Triclimate for colder temperature ranges because of it's 550 fill down liner jacket that will provide more warmth that the 100 gram synthetic liner that the Kira uses.
Hope this helps-

The North Face Atlas Triclimate Jacket - Women's

October 26, 2009

Hi Caroline - they are going to pretty close in warmth, but I will give the slight edge to the Atlas - it has a slightly heavier fleece liner. The Boundary on the other hand gets the edge for comfort- the high loft super soft liner jacket is really comfortable.

The North Face Siren Down Jacket - Women's

October 26, 2009

Hello - There is no doubt that this is a warm jacket. It is 550 fill down insulated with a high loft fleece interior, so I think it would be suitable for all but the coldest conditions. In case you are looking for something for extreme cold conditions, I would point you towards The North Face Nuptse Jacket which will be a little warmer than the Siren.

The North Face Freedom Pant - Men's

October 24, 2009

We are about the same size, and the large long works well for me. The waist has some adjustment to it, so I think it is way more comfortable to go with something a little larger than a little too small. Check out the large long-

The North Face Denali Fleece Jacket - Girls'

October 24, 2009

Hi Meg,

I'm thinking that the XL girls is going to be a little small - I would look at the small or medium in the ladies depending on how you like your jackets to fit. The Denali does run a little on the large side, so you may want to check the small out.

The North Face Lauren Trench Coat - Women's

October 24, 2009

Hi Dawn - I don't know much about the Destination, but it looks like the biggest difference is that the Lauren has a zip out liner which could be handy for a wider range of temperatures, and looks pretty cool if worn on it's own.

The North Face Redpoint Insulated Jacket - Women's

October 24, 2009

Hi Karen- This jacket is surprisingly warm. Even in 10-20 degree weather I find that I wear my Redpoint way more than my down puffy if I am not going to be outside for a long period of time. Primaloft is pretty amazing stuff for how low profile it is. I think you will be happy with this one.

The North Face Khumbu Fleece Jacket - Men's

October 23, 2009

Hello- unfortunately that is generally the nature of traditional pile fleece, and I don't think it is specific to the fleece used in the Khumbu jacket. Being the owner of 2 short hair dogs, traditional pile fleece isn't really an option for me, and I have switched over to is generally refered to as "hard face fleece". These types of fleece have much more dense weaves than pile fleece, and deal much better with dog hair and picking stuff up. An example of this type of jacket is The North Face Momentum Jacket. The other nice advantage of the hard face fabrics is that they tend to have more stretch as well.
Sorry that I don't have any suggestions for your current jacket.

The North Face Osito Fleece Jacket - Women's

October 23, 2009

Hi Bobbie- comfort ranges vary pretty drastically from person to person, but in general I would probably call this jacket comfortable down to the mid 40 degree range. With regards to wind resistance, that won't be one of the strong points for this jacket as it is high loft fleece without any type of wind barrier. If you are looking for fleece with some type of wind blocking barrier, here are a couple of suggestions:
-The North Face Windwall 2 jacket
-The North Face Reversible Chameleon Jacket

The North Face Abby II Winter Boot - Women's

October 23, 2009

Hello- for the type of temperatures that you are talking about, I don't think that this boot will be suitable with 200 grams of insulation. Many other North Face boots have twice that amount, and I think they will be more appropriate for cold Alaska winter conditions. Here are some suggestions for 400 gram or more insulated boots:
-North Face Greenland Zip Boot
-North Face McMurdo Boot
-North Face Four Shadows Boot
Any of these will work fine under pants.
