  • Stomping Grounds:

Play in the Canadian Rockies: Kananaskis, Banff,Bragg Creek, Peter Lougheed parks. B/C ski, mountaineer, rock/ice climb, canoe.
  • Bio:

I am a born and raised Western Canadian who for years did nothing more than the occasional hikes in the mountains. Went traveling and working abroad and soon realized the stuff I had been missing in my own backyard so ret'd home and started pursuing the outdoors with more enthusiasm. I am nothing more than an average practitioner, due to work, age, and family, but I enjoy the mountains immensely. I want my sons to have more exposure and chances than I did to experience first tracks or a summit. Nothing needs to be grand. No Everest in my bio, but a weekend to summit one of our 11,000ers is time well spent for me.

Black Diamond Method Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Black Diamond Method Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 April 25, 2009

When I first tried these on they felt like butter & so I could ignore the cheap looking finish on these boots. After about 40 days on them between backcountry & resort they became the bane of my feet. They needed to be punched out & remolded & the canting adjustment allan screw& washer replaced. They just Felt like butter when I first bought them but became the bane of my feet after about 40 days split between back country and resort skiing.
Had them punched out & remolded & they were better but never as good as the first 10-15 days. Also the cant screw & washer fell out.
Then the screw fell out again & the cuff lost any hold on my shin.
The Boa system was nice for touring as I could secure my foot in & then loosen the rest of the boot & avoid heel slippage. But the plastic guys that hold the Boa wire to the tongue of the liner actually broke within the first week of use. Not a deal breaker, nor did it affect performance, but for over $600 I expect better.
I could not find another replacement piece for the missing cant adjuster ( something I never even touched) so the store took them back & I bought apair of Scarpa Skkokums instead. Have yet to try them still.

Spectacular Specter (Spectre-Canadian spelling)

Westcomb Specter LT Jacket - Men's

Westcomb Specter LT Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 7, 2008

First of all I was tired of having all my outdoor gear made in China, so was looking for Canadian or American made(stimulate economy) and came across Westcomb.A Canadian company, I believe started by some ex Arc'teryx people (if anyone knows for sure let me know). SinceArc'teryx makes a lot of their stuff in China and still charges the same I went for Westcomb.
Now I want to get rid of all my Gore-tex and replace it with e-vent.
This jacket is now my favourite. Took it up Mt Assiniboine and encoutered all manner of weather form rain, wind and sleet to snow and I stayed dry and and more dry. Like the previous reviewer, this jacket has no tacky inside jacket feeling after rain and exertion, is extremely durable, ultra light and packs small.

If the hood gets wet inside just shake it out , the water just comes right out, with little to no residual. Off a duck's back.
