  • Stomping Grounds:

The Elk Mountains of Colorado, Aspen
  • Bio:

I was born and raised in Aspen CO and as a gromit I spent most of my time outdoors. My parents didn't believe in television so passing the time was up to my imagination. Things really haven't changed too much since I was little due to the fact that I am still outside most of the time. Whether it is fly fishing or kayaking in the summer, bow hunting or mountain biking in the fall or skiing in the winter, it isn't just the activities that are my passion, but the amazing mountains and environment as well.
I have been skiing since I was just about two but my skiing background is in alpine racing. This was very important because it really taught me how to ski. Although I loved chasing gates for a while, I didn't truly find my passion for skiing until I stepped into the world of freeriding, and unlocked the heel. The freedom that it offered and the possibility to make the mountain into your own canvas was what really caught my attention and is the main aspect that continues to drive me. A high speed tele turn in buttery pow is a feeling that everyone should experience.
So as a 23 year old telemarker addicted to the big mountains and all they have to offer, I can't wait to see where this crazy adventure takes me next. Let the snow fly.

Black Diamond Megawatt Ski

I would say go with the bigger size. I am pretty much the same size as you and have skied the 188 and because of the long rocker and the shorter base contact they actually ski shorter than their printed size. Be ready to go fast and get buttery with those turns.

Great for the high country coffee enthusiast

Jetboil Coffee Press

Jetboil Coffee Press

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2009

Great addition to the Jet boil system. It is great to be able to wake up in the morning, turn on the gas, hit the ignition button and have fresh brewed coffee right there in your vestibule. Works well and packs in with the fuel canister etc for compact storage. Just keep an eye on it and don't let it boil over or you will have coffee grounds all over the burner and heat coils.

I love this light.

Black Diamond Icon Headlamp

Black Diamond Icon Headlamp

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2009

Best headlamp I have ever owned. I use this lamp with the rechargeable battery kit and it lasts longer and shines brighter than any headlamp I have owned in the past. With freshly charged batteries and when put on the brightest setting this light is brighter than my car headlights which might not be saying too much but it is one bright light. It is also perfect for night rides and can be rigged onto a bike helmet with some imagination. Check it out i'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Black Diamond Icon Headlamp

September 30, 2009

I use this light for everything when it comes to finding my way in the backcountry at night. I recently used it to track an elk that i shot with my bow and without it's long lasting batteries and extra bright setting it would have been much harder to find my elk luckily it pulled through. I would recommend it with the rechargable battery pack for an added boost.

Black Diamond Telekneesis Kneepad

September 30, 2009

These knee pads don't restrict movement at all. If you tighten the bottom strap just enough and leave the top strap just tight enough to hold them in place, after your first run you won't even notice they are there. They also keep your knees nice and warm and limber.

Black Diamond Outlaw with Avalung Pack - 1831-1939cu in

September 30, 2009

This pack should fit everything you mentioned just fine, especially if you hook the helmet on the outside. On the other hand, the anarchist cinches down nicely when you have less gear and also has that extra space when you need more stuff. The helmet in this case would fit just fine inside. The anarchist also rides really well on the back no matter how much gear you have styuffed inside.

Great all around day backcountry pack

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953cu in

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2009

This pack it built well and fits all necessary gear for a good long day in your favorite backcountry zone. With the Avalung the straps might feel a little uncomfortable on your shoulders but with a few sessions it should break in nicely. Another great thing about this pack is the stow-away helmet pouch. Everyone should be wearing a helmet while skiing so a pack with a place to strap your helmet on for those grueling climbs is definitely a plus. If you are looking for a pack with a little more room check out the anarchist avalung. But for the avid day tripper this pack should be perfect.

My favorite ski!!

Black Diamond Zealot Ski

Black Diamond Zealot Ski

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2009

When the first model of the Zealot came out I fell in love with it immediately. It had the stiff tail for added stability at high speeds and it was nice and fat. After skiing them for the season i found that the only problem was that the tip would dive in deeper snow because it was stiff like the tail. This has all changed with the new Zealot. It now sports an early rise tip that will keep that fat shovel tip afloat all the time. If you are looking for a hard charging ski that absolutely rips and won't give out on you at mach speeds check these out.

Black Diamond Kilowatt Ski

Black Diamond Kilowatt Ski

Rating for this product: 5 September 29, 2009

I love this ski. It is my hard charging resort ski for all those days that may not be deep blower. This years kilowatt has a bit softer of a tip so it still does float pretty well in pow conditions. I personally like it for most of my resort skiing because you really can't go wrong in any condition. If you are looking for one ski to do it all you should seriously consider the kilowatt.

Black Diamond Justice Ski

September 29, 2009

The verdict is definitely a stiff ski. The Justice is played down a bit and gives you a bit more play and doesn't ski you. It is lighter than the verdict but fatter as well. Definitely a great ski. It might not be as all condition focused as the verdict but in powder conditions it takes the cake for sure.

Black Diamond Justice Ski

Black Diamond Justice Ski

Rating for this product: 4 September 29, 2009

This ski has strayed a little from the usual stiffness of other BD freeride skis. This makes it an ideal all mountain/pow ski for anyone. With a nice fat early rise tip it has no problem staying afloat in deep light pow. Another great thing about this ski is that it is a bit lighter than other BD freeride models. This makes it ideal for anyone who is looking for a fat backcountry touring setup. With a bright red topsheet and playful flex this is a great choice.

Black Diamond Kingpin Glove

Black Diamond Kingpin Glove

Rating for this product: 5 June 30, 2009

These gloves are great for almost any day on mountain or backcountry. They are warm and come flexible so they dont require a lot of breaking in. I also like the tighter cuff so I can pull my jacket cuff over. I think that i wore these almost every day this last season except for a few extremely cold days when the patrol mitten was necessary. They come highly recommended by me as well as all of my friends who own a pair.

Black Diamond O1 Telemark Ski Binding

June 30, 2009

They are definitely compatible with the T2s. This binding is a great choice and you are gonna be stoked when you get out on them. They are a little heavier than some tele bindings but the difference is easily made up in performance, both climbing and skiing. As for a ski I would recommend the BD Joule. It is a great all mountain as well as backcountry ski. Have fun

Black Diamond Outlaw with Avalung Pack - 1831-1939cu in

Rating for this product: 5 June 30, 2009

The one part of this pack that really sells it for me is the front access. It has a zipper right where the pack rests on your back so all you have to do is take your shoulder straps off and spin it around on your waste and you can get to all your gear in the pack. It is great for photographers who are always having to take their pack on and off to access their camera. It also has the avalung which is a huge plus. I would recommend it for any avid backcountry traveler both snowboarders and skiers.

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953 cu in

June 30, 2009

I would recommend the 32 L. The pack cinches down nicely when you don't have as much gear and there will always be those days when you wish you had a bit more room. The 22 is pretty small and doesn't ride quite as well. Another option is the smaller of the Anarchists. This pack fits the best out of both models and also cinches down pretty small.

In the field tests for the Avalung pack the buried subject got bored after about forty minutes and they dug him out. He If you are burried in a real avalanche though the situation is likely to be a lot different. I guess if you are buried without any bodily trauma with the avalung in your mouth then you could probably last a while but every situation is different. It is best not to fully rely on any piece of avy gear and just play it as safe as possible. But on the other hand It has saved lives .

Cloudveil Koven Jacket - Men's

June 30, 2009

If you really need to secure the hood you can tie the pull cord on the back of the hood to the pull cord located right behind your neck. It is kind of a ghetto rig but it works. If you are looking for a jacket that can be switched i'd recommend something that has a removable hood. I usually just tighten the pull cords so the hood doesn't flop around.

Great avy shovel

Black Diamond Deploy 7 Shovel

Black Diamond Deploy 7 Shovel

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2009

This shovel works great for what it is made to do. It fits well in most backcountry packs, especially the BD packs, It deploys very quickly, and the blade although not the biggest, is larger than many of the other models out there today. The main aspect that I like about this shovel is that the handle is always attached to the blade. This eliminates the problem of possibly losing your handle because it is strapped to your pack which I have seen happen multiple times before. It is a solid shovel and digs quite well so check it out

Black Diamond Carbon Fiber Ski Poles

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2009

These are the best adjustable poles I have ever owned. They are light, compact, and have a large range of length. The grip is comfortable and the straps work just fine although it does help to tape the extra so it doesn't slip out. Because they are so light they do have a tendency to break sometimes but that seems to be the same with all lightweight poles these days. The baskets are a little funky too but if you get the BD powder baskets you will be stylin!

Black Diamond Bombshelter Tent 4-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 5 April 24, 2009

This is a great tent for anything from mountaineering expeditions to summer backpack trips. it Has a spacious interior that fits two with gear comfortably, as well as two large vestibules on either side. Since it is a single walled tent it is light and easy to set up. One drawback is that it has no mesh windows for sky gazing but in that case you should be sleeping outside anyways. If you are looking for one tent for all of your adventures this is it.

Tough and rugged

Cloudveil Koven Pant - Men's

Cloudveil Koven Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2009

As a telemark skier i look for a ski pant that is extremely tough, is breathable for touring, and allows for lots of movement which is necessary for telemarking. I find the koven pant to have all that and maybe more. The full side zips can be zipped to any place and allow for complete ventilation. The material is strong and tough, especially on the inner cuff for all that tip thrashing that goes on when charging. Although they may not be the best just for backcountry touring etc. If you are looking for a pant that you can stay dry and warm in while charging the resort and enjoying endless BC pow than this is it.

Great fit falling apart

Smith 2008 Variant Brim Helmet

Smith 2008 Variant Brim Helmet

Rating for this product: 2 March 26, 2009

I have had this helmet for a little under a year and already the top plastic cover is beginning to come off, the brim is completely loose on one side and the ratchet fit system in the back is constantly popping out. I have heard that they have put more work into this helmet since last season which I hope is true because it is not a good feeling when your helmet is falling apart within a few months of buying it, especially when it is selling for 150.0 retail. Other than the poor construction, it does fit well and look good but that doesn't really matter when it doesn't stay together.

Solid stable best tele binding out there.

Black Diamond O1 Telemark Ski Binding DO NO TUSE

Black Diamond O1 Telemark Ski Binding DO NO TUSE

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2009

I have been skiing these bindings since they came out and have never had any problems with them whatsoever. I have had the cartridges spin a little but how hard is it to spin them back a few turns to their original position. They have never loosened while skiing. I have also ran into people who say that they keep ripping out of their skis. As a tele skier i have learned to constantly check my bindings and make sure they aren't loose at all. Tele bindings get loose easily due to the huge amount of force put on the screws and when it is loose that is when it rips out of the ski. I ski these bindings hard over a hundred days a year and have never experienced any sort of blowout. They provide me with awesome stability when going fast, especially with the ridstiff cartridges. I would recommend the midstiff cartridges or free flex for anyone who would call their skiing a little more mellow. Check them out and you will not be disappointed.

Cloudveil Koven Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 17, 2009

With large pit zips that cool you down on those warm days, and unrivaled windstopping ability that only requires one or two underlayers during those colder deep pow days, this jacket is great. It also is pretty light and easily fits in small spaces. I have always owned a heavier jacket but now with the Koven If i throw on one extra light layer under my normal thermals, it can be just as warm as any other heavier insulated jacket. I also use my Koven in the summer as a rain shell. If you are looking for a shell that can cover pretty much every activity both in summer and winter I highly recommend the Koven.

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Rating for this product: 5 March 17, 2009

I have been using these skins for the last three years and have never had a problem. They come precut to any BD skis but can be cut easily to fit any other skis. They are not the lightest skins but what they don't make up for in weight, they cover double in functionality. They seldom slip and if they are taken care of they can last forever. Anyway a little more weight attached to your feet can only make you stronger in the long run. These skins are bomber and work way better than any other skins out there. Make sure to insert the metal tail clip at the tightest possible setting and you will have no problems with them coming off during your skin. I have had touring days when i have put on and taken off these skins over ten times and they are easy and manageable every time. Hope this helps

Simple but bulky

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

Rating for this product: 4 March 16, 2009

I have found this beacon to be easy to use and understand. The ortovox beacon that I had previously was not nearly as user friendly as the tracker. With it's digital distance display and tracker light direction indicators I found that with a little bit of practice this beacon is easy to use and works well when working to find buried beacons or skiing partners in a hurry. It is simple easy to use and easy to learn how to use. The only aspect that was a little weird is the carrying system. It has a holster that is pretty bulky and can be pretty annoying with a backpace, radio, and whatever else you may have buried in those jacket pockets. I have since gotten used to the system and am quite happy with it. Hope this helps.

Black Diamond Bandit AvaLung Package

Black Diamond Bandit AvaLung Package

Rating for this product: 4 March 16, 2009

This is definitely a pretty killer package if you are looking for a good pack with an avalung and a solid shovel and probe that all fit well in the pack. This pack is small but it is perfect for a resort day-pack or a off resort sidecountry pack. I did have trouble with it fitting well to my back at first but as I broke it in it worked better. I wish it had some bungies on the front so you could strap on a jacket because it doesn't fit inside. It does have a nice cross-pack ski carrying system as well. The shovel included is easily deployed as well as the probe. So if you are looking for a great package deal for those long resort days or those close sidecountry missions I would recommend this package.

It has enough space to fit gear for multiple day backcountry missions but cinches down tight when only a day lunch and extra layers are needed. The best part about this pack is that no matter what load you are carrying it always fits snug to your back unlike other packs that fit awkwardly when maxed out. Also it has a side zip that allows you to find things further down in the pack without having to search by feel. To top it off it has the Avalung just in case. So if I could choose one backpack to cover all of my needs while in the Backcountry this is definitely it.

Kill-owatt

Black Diamond Kilowatt Ski

Black Diamond Kilowatt Ski

Rating for this product: 5 January 30, 2009

Skiing in Colorado can be full of suprises. For example the other day it was raining at the base of the mountain and this is mid January. Now on the same day on the top of the mountain it was absolutely nuking some of the biggest flakes I have seen in a while. This is the great thing about the kilowatts. They have the ability to kill it in all conditions. They rip it up on fast groomers, and turn quickly in the bumps. On Pow days they have that nice shovel tip that keeps them up and when that pow turns to crud they are stiff enough in the tail to allow for big stable GS turns down pretty much everything. It is not too often that I am able to ski one ski well in so many conditions but the kilowatt does just that. If you are looking for a ski that can handle anything the mountain and mother nature throws at you, the kilowatt is the answer.

Mega-WHAT!

Black Diamond Megawatt Ski 08/09 Model

Black Diamond Megawatt Ski 08/09 Model

Rating for this product: 5 October 17, 2008

These skis rip. The BD megawatts are the perfect fat ski to add to the quiver. They can make 5 inches feel like 10 and still get you down deep enough for those blower face shots that we all love. I skied these all last season and was just blown away. The thing that I like most about them is how quick you can throw them from side to side, and you will definitely be needing to throw them to the side because with these skis you will be flying. Also unlike many of the fat skis out today, the watts handle surprisingly well on the hardpack, you know for those resort pow days.
