Pom

Spacecraft Pom Beanie

Spacecraft Pom Beanie

Rating for this product: 4 February 5, 2011

The pom hat... this is a nice hat, I like it, just a few things to mention about the hat. First off this hat is not as big or slouchy as it looks in the picture, its actually a fairly small hat. Secondly a quick note about the actual pom pom. The pom is held on by some sort of glue, its not sewn on. My pom actually fell off while taking off a jersey on one of the first days I wore this hat. It wasnt a big deal I didnt lose the pom and I just sewed it on myself and I havent had any problems since. Anyway great hat, keep track of your pom....

Skullcandy Icon Soft Headphones

Skullcandy Icon Soft Headphones

Rating for this product: 5 February 1, 2011

Got these bad boys for myself for Christmas and I am soo stoked on them, The sound quality is pretty good considering the size of these guys (how small they are) and I love the fact that I can move them around on my head easily if I need to talk to someone. I got the electric animal style and It looks so killer. Not too sure about some of the complaints I see about them flying off, the design is such that they fit perfectly under my goggle strap so if my goggles aren't going anywhere, these suckers aren't either and if your losing your goggles regularly in the park I think you have bigger issues than finding headphones that are gonna stay on... Anyway get these headphones but not the electric animal, I'm rockin that color lol

SmartWool PhD Ski Medium Sock

SmartWool PhD Ski Medium Sock

Rating for this product: 4 February 1, 2011

This sock is great, good moisture wicking, good padding, keeps me warm.... For skiing this sock is all I need. One quick grievance, If I'm not wearing ski boots these tend to bunch up a little more easily than my pair of Darn Toughs, other than that this sock is perfect.

Fox River Extreme Ski Sock

Fox River Extreme Ski Sock

Rating for this product: 3 February 1, 2011

This sock does what it is supposed to, keeps my feet warm and dry. Three stars simply because out of all the brand new socks I got this season these are the only ones that have holes in them already. So basically this is a great sock for the price but buy a couple pairs they wear out after a few months.

Salomon STH 16 Ski Binding

Salomon STH 16 Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 5 January 25, 2011

These bindings are great. That salomon "snap" is just so reassuring. I am 5' 9" about 135# and I rock my DIN at a little over 12. At this setting I have never come out when I haven't been in serious risk of knee or other injury. It's like they know when I eat shit and they know when I'm tryin to hang on for dear life, if these bindings think I can land it then they are gonna stay on and I'm prolly gonna nail it! Salomon rocks, I wish these were as light as my marker jesters....

Killer pants dude...

DC Nisto Bib Pant - Men's

DC Nisto Bib Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 24, 2011

God I love these things.... these pants are great I love the whole bib and these bad boys round out my blue suit perfectly. DC's waterproofing is absolutely fantastic, I haven't been wet yet, these pants are not for warmth so don't expect to go out on the chilly days with just these, layer up and your gold. These pants look sick!!!!!
I do have a few gripes, first off the pockets the only pockets on this I use are the chest pockets because they are the only pockets with zippers! Don't get me wrong the other pockets have buttons that work well but I dont want to be snapping and unsnapping buttons with my gloves on!
Second gripe, I am getting a few rips in the bottom of the pants from my ski edges hitting them while I am in the air, these rips dont effect the performance of the product and are irrelevant if your a snowboarder but if you ski be careful with those edges!

Bottom Line: Great pants, super stylin, not warm, could use more zippers! (I love them anyway! had about 20 days on these boys so far...)

Smith Goggle Case

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2010

This case is fantastic. Smith sent me one when I bought my IO's. I now use it for my EG2's and it does the job exceptionally well. I can throw my goggles in my boot bag without any fear of scratches or crunches. Also the little strap to hold extra lenses in place is a great touch, nice job smith!

Smith Snow Eraser

Smith Snow Eraser

Rating for this product: 4 November 19, 2010

This is a great thing to have and it does what it is supposed to and it does it well. I did give it only four stars and the reason is the size. The snow eraser is only a couple of square inches, the downside of this is that it gets fully wet reasonably easily. I would give it five stars if the size were increased an inch or two on all sides. If this were the case it would still fit into any pocket and it would have more absorbency!

My new fav (keep it on the DL)

K2 Silencer Alpine Ski

K2 Silencer Alpine Ski

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2010

I know BC doesn't have this model in stock any more but I still wanted to review it because I love this ski! I bought this bad boy over the summer to be my early season screw around ski and I am soooo glad that I did. I mounted this ski true center (which is actually about 1 or 2 cm in front of the marked "true center") and I think this is where this ski should be mounted. The ski is so light that I feel as if I don't have skis on but it's so stiff that I can straightline with confidence and not worry about chatter. I love how easy it is to pop off anything and just start spinning, its effortless! I cannot stress enough how playful this ski is. If your a small dude and you need something to play around on those not powder days this is it. There are a few things this ski is NOT for. 1: big dudes, I am 5'9" 130 lbs and I rock the 179 (the longest length) I just don't think a person with more weight would have as much fun on this ski. 2: This is NOT for powder, this ski is tiny, on powder days I roll with the Hellbents this is a ski for turning the mountain into a playground when there just isn't fluffy stuff to be had. Maybe this is the ski for you maybe not, I love it!

Smith I/O Interchangeable Optics Spherical Series Goggles

Smith I/O Interchangeable Optics Spherical Series Goggles

Rating for this product: 5 November 14, 2010

I love Smith they are my go to for sunglasses so I had to try out these goggles. They truly are fantastic, the style on these baby's is so original, I mean it looks like there is no frame, I love it. As always the clarity of vision through Smith lenses is top notch. The goggles are super light and I forget that I am wearing them. I love the lens changing system, it is the best on the market, literally a 30 second switch. I do need to get into some cons. The first is that I wish the ignitor lens was darker, I will need to get another lens for bluebird days. My other con is that my EG2s have a much better field of vision. I think it's cleat that these goggles are still fabulous and deserve five stars. I just prefer my EG2s...

Decided to use these on minimal powder yesterday at Loveland. I gotta say they were a blast! I only weigh 130 lbs. so the fact that they are super soft was great I felt like I could butter like crazy. Just the size of these skis is impressive. I hate to say it but I think the new model would just be too much ski for me... anyway I love the ski and everything about it.

Peripherals anyone?

Electric EG2 Goggle

Electric EG2 Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 November 2, 2010

I love these goggles, they are soooo steezy. My favorite feature of the goggle is the size of the goggle. With other goggles I feel that I can always see the frames at the edge of my periphery and because of this I feel a tad bit limited as far as sight goes. Not with the EG2's, even if I'm looking as far to the side as I can I can't see the frame! The lens is that huge! The anti-fog anti-scratch coating works exactly as advertised. I wish these goggles weren't so awesome so that I could be the only one on the hill with a pair, but they truly are all that and then some so get ready to see plenty of other people wearing them this season!

Just What I Needed

Smith Annex Sunglasses - Polarized

Smith Annex Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 October 14, 2010

These glasses are perfect. Over the past few years I have had the pleasure of trying many different brands and styles of glasses. What I found was that whenever I found a pair with the right amount of coverage the frames were just too heavy (i.e Electric Bourbon). I then tried the Smith Serpico but I just don't trust wire frames. Before I found these I tried the Smith Outlaw, which are great glasses and super light weight but I needed a bit more coverage. I then stumbled upon these bad boys. The lenses are big boxy and cover my entire field of vision. The frame is lightweight and extremely solid. Lastly I cannot say enough about the quality of optics that Smith is known for, the polarization is top notch and you have to really want to do some damage to scratch these babys up.

Bottom Line: Lightweight, full coverage, killer optics. I LOVE these glasses, you will too.

MSR WhisperLite Stove

MSR WhisperLite Stove

Rating for this product: 5 September 17, 2010

I used this stove on a NOLS trip for two weeks in the backcountry. It is perfect for an extended trip. This stove is easy to light and super easy to clean. Even if the shaker jet isn't working for one reason or another, there are so few parts to this stove that taking it apart is a super simple and super quick task. The genius of this stove is obvious when it is completely disassembled and there are less than ten parts on the table in front of you.

Bottom Line: If you know what fuel your going to be burning, GET THIS STOVE!

Leatherman Wave Multi-Tool

Leatherman Wave Multi-Tool

Rating for this product: 5 September 16, 2010

I am writing this review because I recently lost my wave and replaced it with an SOG Powerlock gotten off SAC, and now I am very sad. The wave is everything you need. The pliers are perfect, the screwdriver and other tools lock into place with authority and don't come out! Lastly putting the knife and saw on the outside is such an innovative idea that allows for maximum blade length in a smaller package, I didn't realize how great I had it til it was gone! I will be buying a new wave as soon as my winter job starts!

Bottom Line: I've never felt more prepared for anything than I have with the wave at my side.

Unimpressed

SOG Knives PowerLock Multi-Tool

SOG Knives PowerLock Multi-Tool

Rating for this product: 2 September 16, 2010

I got this tool for a pretty good deal on SAC, I needed it because my leatherman got swiped out of my apartment! Anyway I am unimpressed with this tool, first off the gears for more torque with the pliers is a fun idea but it is wholly unnecessary and it limits how far the pliers can be opened while in your hand. Secondly the springs in the "powerlock" mechanism are a joke, I'll be using the screwdriver, my thumb will brush upon the release button and whoops, there goes my screwdriver. Thirdly, the metal coverings that close over the knife and screwdrivers and things, are also a joke. They are held in by measly metal indentations. The first time they came out of place, I spent five minutes trying to figure out why my tool wouldn't close, I finally realized that the silly metal plate was out of place and getting in the way of the plier, I couldn't believe it. I have one last complaint about this tool, the size. I used to have the leatherman Wave, if you look at the specs the wave is a smaller tool with a larger knife (and it costs less) to me this just speaks volumes.

Bottom Line: Get serious, get a leatherman

Gold

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2010

I took a trip with NOLS last winter, just north of Jackson Hole. 14 days in the field. I used a pair of these babies and they were fantastic. The adhesive is incredible, not one problem over the entire two weeks. When not on my skis, they were folded in half and taken care of, at night they were laid out in between my thermarests to prevent freezing. Using this system, one cannot go wrong. As far as the nylon goes, I have only good things to say about it. Any pitch I was interested in climbing was easily achieved. That is not to say they defy the laws of physics, but there is a simple formula for understanding what will stick and what will not. Full sled + full pack + myself and skis + <35 degree slope = slippage. The only time this all came together was when moving our base camp through thick forest and encountering an unexpectedly steep rise in slope. For all intents and purposes they stick to snow like.... gold? Oh and I encountered minimal buildup of snow over the entire trip.

Bottom Line: Go To skin for NOLS Teton Valley, and for good reason, performance worth their weight in gold!

DAKINE Pro 2 Backpack - 1600cu in

DAKINE Pro 2 Backpack - 1600cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 5, 2010

This pack is perfect for a good day trip. It has everything I could want. The external shovel/probe pocket is a great idea, the ski carry is so nifty, I love how it works. The camera pocket is great for more than just a camera, I use it for carrying my multitool and other small necessities I bring with... I really love how adjustable the size is, when skiing the resort with a smaller load pulling those four straps tight makes the pack so small that I can easily ride the lift without taking it off. The hydration sleeve is a little tight making getting the reservoir in and out a little difficult but this is a small price to pay for unfrozen water.

Bottom Line: I love this pack it has everything you could ever want for a day of ripping it.

Marker Jester 16 Ski Binding

July 27, 2010

Defintely Tom, I am 5'9" 140. I am a very aggressive skier and I spend plenty of time in the trees searching for day old freshies. I keep my binders (dukes) at about 11. I realize at this DIN I could go with the griffons/barons, which is something that you might want to check out. But I don't mind a little extra weight for a more beefy binding. I will be mounting some Hellbents up with Jesters this season. You should do the same!

Do you have cold hands?

Black Diamond Mercury Mitten - Men's

Black Diamond Mercury Mitten - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 15, 2010

I have cold hands. It's in my nature, they are always cold. For that reason these mitts are perfect. BUT BE AWARE! If you are not comfortable with your hands being in near sweating temperatures these are not for you. Personally I would rather put up with the extra warmth in exchange for certainty that I will never be cold.

Also, I love the fact that this is a long mitten. I can put the cuff over my jacket, bite the handy elastic pull cord thingy and not worry about snow getting in my gloves ever again!

A note about the waterproofing. My biggest test of these gloves was when I spent two weeks with them in the Absorokas, just north of Jackson Hole. The snow there is not super wet and I found that in everyday life the shell was sufficiently resistant. However, I wore the shells while I was digging out a quigloo and after about five minutes it was quite apparent that my hands were wet but these still get five stars because I got out of that snow cave put the shells on my shoulders for 10 minutes under the sun, and these gloves were back to being their normal toasty selves.

Bottom line: Great product, be aware of what you are buying.

Black Diamond Traverse Ski Poles

Black Diamond Traverse Ski Poles

Rating for this product: 5 June 23, 2010

These are my go to poles. Last season I spent two whole weeks with these in the backcountry. This pole stood tough through it all. whether I was using it to saw a rutschblock, using it to measure snow cave walls, or just using it to haul my ass up the mountain I always had full faith in this pole. Also I would like to give an extra hurrah! for the flicklock system. I'm the kind of guy that likes to be always changing pole length, longer for the up shorter for the down etc.. and the flicklock mechanism has shown zero wear whatsoever even though it gets used dare I say excessively lol. Anyway awesome pole, BD coming through as always!

Great Binding

Marker Duke 16 Ski Binding

Marker Duke 16 Ski Binding

Rating for this product: 4 April 25, 2010

First let me say I love this binding. I have skied on it for three seasons and I've never popped out when I didn't want to. The confidence I gained with this binding really helped me push my skiing to the next level. The weight of the binding is well worth it. All this being said, this last season I've noticed some deterioration. It hasn't effected my skiing yet but when I work on my skis I find that there is starting be be a little bit of a wiggle forward and back. Its less than a millimeter of movement but its happening in both of my bindings and I'm just hoping it won't get worse. Has anyone else had this problem and if so can it be fixed? From what I can tell its just a loosening of the band that helps with the heel lockdown and it doesnt look fixable.

conclusion: great binding, love it. hoping I can fix my wiggle

K2 Kung Fujas Alpine Ski

April 17, 2010

if you can honestly tell yourself that your a good skier, get the 179s. I grew up with parents that were into the rental scene as well. i was so excited when I was 17 and I bought my first pair of skis, They were the k2 seths from 2 or 3 years ago and they were way bigger than anything id skied before. couple months later I turn 18, move to colorado for good. I'm so happy I decided to go with a bigger ski. I went from a 161 dynastar troublemaker to a 171 K2 seth (I'm 5'7" 135). bottom line if its time to upgrade do it, youll be happy you did
