The "youth" is designed to fit a child 5-9 years old and the "child" size is designed to fit a child 2-5 years old.
Apparently the Backcountry site now has a size chart for all the hats.

I love this hat. It's super lightweight so I can wear it all day. I was captain of the last rest stop on the Mountain Lakes Challenge - a century ride here in Oregon and stood in the sun and amazingly WINDY weather all day - I cinched that sucker down on my head with the adjustment loop and didn't even have to use the chin strap. I also count on the hat for paddling because it protects my neck and the tops of my ears. The sage color looks great on everybody - especially blondes. I do have to add that I don't recommend folding the hat brim. The brim is made from foam core and will crease permanently, so if you're taking it on your travels - pack it flat. Sunday Afternoons rep
