MSR Alpine 2 Stainless Steel Pot Set

MSR Alpine 2 Stainless Steel Pot Set

Rating for this product: 5 June 23, 2011

Not sure why the majority of these reviews are 4/5 stars; sure, this pot set isn't made out of anodized unobtanium, but it is just about indestructible, and less than half the price of comparable sized and function titanium kits. Both pots pour very well. The lid/frying pan seats very well on both pots. It works fine for frying too, although that depends somewhat on your stove and a lot on your patience- no different than any other lid-frypan over a backpacking stove. This is an excellent, very durable 2-4 person heavy backpacking stove. It particularly shines on trips where weight and size are not at a premium- my set gets the most use during the winter (throw it in the pulk), car camping, and canoeing. Not so great for 1-2 person summer backpacking, but that's what the foster's can pot is for.

Osprey Packs Stratos 24 Backpack - 1300-1700cu in

Osprey Packs Stratos 24 Backpack - 1300-1700cu in

Rating for this product: 5 February 22, 2010

Fantastic pack, everything you need for a day hike (or lightweight backpacking, or ski touring, or pretty much anything else). Pockets are super well-designed. I like the lycra side water bottle pockets vs. the mesh variety, as they are less likely to snag on stuff. The compression system is fantastic. You can ski carry diagonally or A-frame pretty easily, which is nice. Harness is of course extremely comfortable. Two hydration "pockets" (one is inside the mesh back panel), both with bag hangers. Note that Osprey has made some design decisions (we'll say) on this pack for the model year 2010; if I were you, grab this one before retailers start running out of stock, as the new model loses a lot of the good features of this pack.

Jetboil Classic Personal Cooking System

February 12, 2009

Not really a question, but I'd rather not slant the star rating with a review, having never owned this stove. There is a recall on JetBoil stoves, such as this one. See: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml09/09126.htmlHaving said that, I have a piezo-lit Primus canister stove that I bought for $20, and barring the unpleasantness of using the (awfully) disposable canisters, I couldn't be happier. Not only did I save ~60$ compared to a *Boil, but the thing'll boil a liter of water in 3 min (and that's including set-up), and my pot + windscreen + stove weighs < 8 oz.

MontBell Alpine Light Down Jacket - Men's

February 10, 2009

Fabric is 30D- not trash-bag territory like the U.L.; I expect mine to last for a long time, but I'd still watch out for tree branches, etc., as this isn't a shell and you don't want to cover your brand-new puffy with duct tape, do you? I can't compare it to the RAB jacket, except to say that SOME RAB puffies use 30D Pertex, which is definitely comparable to Montbell's 30D Ballistic calendared nylon. Crap, I sound like a Montbell rep...Stay warm.

MontBell Alpine Light Down Jacket - Men's

MontBell Alpine Light Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

I can't help it, I have to give this piece the full five stars. I prefer the hood on the parka version, I think it adds a ton of warmth, but besides that, this jacket is nearly flawless (and some people don't like hoods in their insulation layer). Insanely warm, weighs next to nothing, packs down tiny. A few more specs: zipper garage at the throat, internal drop pockets on both sides, elastic cuffs (but without the horrible wrinkles some cuffs have). Sizing is spot-on, i.e. size up from tnf (5'11" 150lbs, medium fits perfectly where a small in north face is required). I decided on this instead of the U.L. MontBell jacket, and I have to say that the 15D nylon on the U.L. might have been a little fragile. As it is, I expect to get a lot of use out of this jacket, construction is immaculate, very low tolerances on the seams etc.
Fleece is dead, long live down.

The North Face Zot Windstopper Jacket - Men's

The North Face Zot Windstopper Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 7, 2008

pretty good bang for the buck, snagged it on bco for ~65$. gore windstopper is great, does just that, apex is pretty good too. seems a little fragile, not strictly a soft "shell" in my opinion, more like a stretchy windbreaker. low bulk, layers well. has two inside pockets (not mentioned in the desc.). hand pockets are very small, so be aware. not bad for the price, pretty standard tnf quality (i.e. not perfect). i'd recommend shelling out the extra cash for the OR tremor though, much better featured (of course much more pricey) for only a few more ounces. been in some light rain with the zot, and it's held up ok, my guess is dwr on the apex stuff at least. i'm 5'11" 145, small fits very nicely (i always have to size down on tnf). on the plus side, breathes great.

The North Face Volt Softshell Jacket - Men's

The North Face Volt Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 17, 2008

Surprisingly windproof, haven't seen how well it sheds rain. Stretch is VERY good, comfortable jacket; breathes really well. Zipper garage is a nice touch. Think I prefer Windstopper jackets however, swapped this for a TNF Zot and am much happier, got a little more insurance against bad weather. Think I might be turning into a TNFlemming...

Works great, it's got extra-breathable panels on the armpit and bottom of the forearms, nice touch. Thumb holes are a must have for cold-weather running.
