soft and warm

Sport Science Zip T-Neck Wool Jersey - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 20, 2008

Hubby prefers to rotate through performance tees as pajama tops, for odor-free multi-day use. This one's great for cold weather... very soft and lightweight (thinner than expected) but actually very warm. I love that it zips all the way up to keep his neck warm. The only problem is, he can't use the thumb-holes because they're too small and they don't stretch even a little bit. If they thumb-holes were bigger and comfortable to use (like the ones on my North Face Stratus hoodie), then this pullover would absolutely deserve five stars.

Salomon Moto Tech T-Shirt - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 20, 2008

I got this shirt (black XS) during a big sale and didn't think much of it. Then it arrived and I started wearing it, and it was a -huge- hit with the hubby! It's also comfortable, dry, wrinkle-free, and high quality in all aspects of its construction. Extremely nice look and feel. But the fact that he says it looks hot on me really sends it over the top and makes it my favorite technical tee.

truly multi-functional

Snow Peak Solo Cutting Board

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2008

Light and multi-functional. Nice plate for bread and cheese at lunchtime on the trail. Useful for getting the camp fire going for dinner. Fits nicely into the stuff sack of our 2L MSR Titan pot (just the right length, rounded corners). Handy in the kitchen when we're not camping.

light and warm

Lafuma Warm 'n Light 1000 Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2008

We already owned a pair of Lafuma WnL 600s when we picked up a pair of Lafuma WnL 1000s to extend the usefulness of our gear to three seasons. Our new WnL 1000s kept us warm just fine in late October on Bear Mountain in NY. They zipped together nicely and we used them with Therm-a-Rest sleeping pads in an MSR tent with the rainfly on. In other words, these work as advertised if you use them with a bunch of other gear (which campers usually do, right?). For sub-zero temperatures we would consider nesting the WnL 600s inside the WnL 1000s. For minimal size and heft, our Lafuma sleeping bags deliver acceptable performance at moderate cost... 4.5 stars overall.

great once you break them in

Chaco Intersect Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2008

I have these in black and siesta. The siesta ones are especially pretty. They also gave me some pretty bad blisters on the tops of my feet, so then I was scared to try the black ones, but when I finally did, the black ones fit perfectly from the get go. (Both pairs fit great on my feet now.) These sandals offer an enormous amount of arch support, and the soles are really, really sturdy. Strong like a shoe but cute like a sandal!

Coleman Egg Carrier - 6 Count

Rating for this product: 5 November 19, 2008

We got two of these (one for each of us) and they are sooo super cute! We used to just carry pre-boiled eggs in a plastic bag (to go with our bread and cheese on the trail), but nevermore. Now we can even pack fresh eggs for breakfast!

borderline okay

Arc'teryx Blaze Crew - Short-Sleeve - Women's

Rating for this product: 3 November 19, 2008

I bought this shirt in all three colors on the strength of the brand. Drift really is the weird blueish-white as pictured. Papaya is not as pictured, practically neon orange in reality. All of them have a really small collar size that makes it hard to take them off. The heat transfer tag at the collar also feels like plastic sticking on the skin. The fabric wicks as it should, but I wouldn't buy more, based on my experience with the ones that I have.

Sugoi Fizz Bra - Women's

I'm a 32A and got the XS. It fits very comfortably, and feels both soft and supportive. Plus the colors flatter my skin tone.

great rain jacket!

Arc'teryx Epsilon SV Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

I'm 5'1" with a 17" torso and a small bust, and got the XS a few months ago. This hooded jacket works wonders in sudden showers - way better than an umbrella, especially in the windy Northeast! It's so thin and lightweight that it feels like you're not wearing any outerwear at all; I've never stayed so dry with such little fuss. The curves in the cut of this jacket are very cute and flattering on a petite frame (the hubby approves whole-heartedly). The torso and sleeves are quite roomy enough for layering in spring and fall (i.e. not fitted, but for good reason). Through the fall I've been wearing the North Face Stratus underneath the Epsilon SV, and they've kept me dry and toasty without the bulk.

nice to have

Snow Peak Titanium Silverware Set

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2008

We got two sets for camping. The pieces are sturdier and safer to cook with than the compostable utensils that we used to bring along. The knives cut through steak without a problem. The nylon sleeves are neat and functional, but I've docked a star because we received ugly colors.

The North Face Stratus Hooded Full-Zip Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

I'm 5'1" and got the XS in Parlor Red. The print inside the hood is really very pretty. Hubby loves the thumb-holes... he calls them my "paws." The fit is very flattering, sleek and fitted. I like to wear this under my Arc'teryx Epsilon SV when going out, or over pajamas for lounging around the house. It does a good job of keeping me warm.

THE jacket of choice

The North Face Sentinel WindStopper Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

Gave this to the hubby as a Christmas present last year, and he hasn't worn another jacket since. He wears this one year-round, through summer rain and winter snow, and no amount of coaxing or nudging has ever changed his mind. The wind-stopping and water-proofing fabric really works as advertised, even when he's road-biking. The Velcro cuffs are actually very soft (and haven't damaged any of my clothes!). Seeing this kind of performance, we just had to pick up another one for my little brother.

comfortable and versatile!

The North Face Ava Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

My sister and I both bought these sandals in two colors, and we couldn't be more pleased. They are cute and comfortable, with just the right amount of arch support for city walking. We've had these since summer and they were great for getting around campgrounds and protecting our feet in coin-operated showers - low-maintenance, fast-drying, and convenient to get on or off. Best of all, we discovered that the colored straps are stain-resistant. Just a splash under the faucet, and these looked good as new!

comfortable but size down

Teva Terra Fi II Sandal - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 August 19, 2008

Very comfortable; I can run, skip and hop in these and feel like I'm walking on really well-tended grass. I wear a size 6 in pretty much every brand, but after seeing these on my feet, I would rather have size 5 in Tevas, so maybe size down when you buy. I have relatively small feet and the straps are also a bit long for me, such that they stick out over the ends. Then when I compromise and loosen the straps my foot slides around a bit, which isn't terrible for city walking but probably won't cut it on the trail...

so comfortable!

Mountain Hardwear Wicked Tank - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 July 30, 2008

This shirt is so light and comfortable that it's my new favorite summertime pajama top! It will be coming along on our next hiking/camping adventure for sure. In difference to the others, I'm quite satisfied with the length of this shirt (I have a 17" torso length, and the XS hits me 2" below the top of my hip bone). And yes, the white/casper version is see-through, but I think it will layer discreetly. I love this shirt!

grrreat pot!

MSR Titan Titanium 2 Liter Pot

Rating for this product: 5 July 30, 2008

We bought this for use on a ten-day trip with friends through Death Valley and Yosemite. We used it together with their MSR Pocket Rocket. We cooked pasta, rice, and soup (for five) in this pot. One morning we even managed to make bacon and scrambled eggs (got around the heat distribution issue by moving the pot over the flame while the goods were still cookin'). We had an really easy time washing up every time; *nothing* sticks to the titanium. Since other reviewers mentioned it, we were a little concerned about how much we would like the pot holder, but hey it worked great for us, even when the pot was full of boiling pasta (very stable). We were glad to not have to buy or carry separate plates; the lid worked great. It all packed up nicely into its own stuff sack, and totally outshone our friends' gear!

very versatile!

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

Rating for this product: 5 July 30, 2008

Together with a 2L MSR Titan pot, this little stove can cook a lot of food! We never had any problems with stability; we just made sure that the the pot was at least somewhat centered over the stove. For foods that required heat distribution (like bacon), we just moved the pot over the flame a bit; the flame packs quite a punch and does the job quickly. We just bought an MSR Titan Kettle to add to the mix. All the pieces nests together nicely. We went camping with friends, some beginners and some experienced, and *everyone* was impressed with the Pocket Rocket's size, weight, speed, and ease of use! The other stove that our friends had packed never saw the light of day.

does the job

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 3 Stuff Sack

Rating for this product: 4 July 26, 2008

Sure, the sack should come with the pad, but if it did, then no one would be able to customize their own Therm-a-Rest configuration. Following a previous reviewer's advice, we found that the Pro-Lite 3 Stuff Sack slides nicely over the Pro-Lite 4 Sleeping Pad (though it *must* be rolled up thoroughly). Once we got used to using them together, we were quite glad to be packing that much less bulk! One caveat: The end handle isn't built to withstand hard tugging.

light and small!

Lafuma Warm'n Light 600 Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 July 26, 2008

The light weight and small bulk of these sleeping bags can't be beat. Using a left-zip and right-zip together, we were nice and toasty even when camped at high elevation, below the recommended temperature rating. But the sleeping bags are quite thin and we had to learn (the hard way) to keep them completely out of contact with the sides of our tent; even a little contact at our feet caused noticeable heat loss.
