I guess you could attach it to the side of a full body harness while belaying with a figure 8, but I wouldnt. You are creating a system that doesnt make any sense. I think you are just asking for trouble when trying to do this. Check out this forum on a Prusik back-up.

Edelweiss Onsight Arc Climbing Rope - 9.9mm
July 31, 2009
If you are really looking for a work horse you should look at a marathon rope from sterling or the sharp arc from edelweiss. The marathon series is super tough, they last forever and always climb well. I have owned a couple over the past 10 years (8 spent guiding). The sharp arc is also a beast. It takes some time to break in and will feel super stiff, but it will last a long time.
IF I had to pick one rope soft catches and durability it would be the sterling.

The #5 looks neat but who really wants to climb a nasty offwidth, which is the only place you could use it. Plus the thing weighs like a 100 lbs. Buy either the .3, a .75, #1 or #2. Think fingers and fists. Those are the sizes you will be using most at this point in the game. good luck.

Revolution Climbing, Inc. Jib Combo Set - 40 piece
July 1, 2009
These screw in using drywall screws. The jibs are very small, so running a hex bolt through them to a t-nut wont work. These are best used as additional hold to a couple of combo packs. You can use them for foot holds or really small crimps. As far as your 3/4 inch ply goes, these will hold fine with the screws they come with.

Five Ten Galileo Climbing Shoe
March 30, 2009
These will not stretch at all, so dont expect that. I have the same problem, I have a high arch. It is up to you if you want a shoe that will not close all the way. I cant hang with that. I would not go up a half size as then your heel will move around and the shoe will suck. If you are set on a velcro shoe, i'd keep looking. Otherwise there are tons of great slippers and lace ups that would work for you. Try La Sportiva, they seem to have a little more volume built in for the arch and instep.

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's DO NOT USE
March 30, 2009
They are both designed with a slip lasted fit, however the Mythos has a broad flat toebox. The Muira has a more defined downturned toe. The Mythos is unlined, so it will stretch to fit your foot, the Muira is panel lined which allows for a little bit of stretch but not much and in only certain direction. If you were able to put the Mythos on and keep it on for while without much or any pain then that same size would be fine in the Muira. Dont expect much change in shape or expansion from the Muira.

Solio Solio Hybrid 1000 Charger
March 29, 2009
I dont think the D60 has a dc input. since you are using removable rechargable batteries I would into a set-up like this:Brunto solar panel and any 12v inverter (can be bought at almost every electroncis store). You can plug the inverter in to the panal and charge your stuff up. Leave it at your camp while you are out with your camera shooting. You will need at least 1-2 extra batteries. But this set-up would be perfect.

Unless your camera has a dc imput you cannot. However if you do, then you would be able to charge your camera, however you should know that cameras have the greatest power draw of most personal electronics, this means that you will be spending more time waiting for the camera to charge while taking fewer pics. If you can look into other solutions.

The North Face Roadrunner 33 Tent 3-Person 3 Season
March 29, 2009
This tent should suit you fine. I am sure you know but being 6'5" means that every tent is going to be snug. This one is 7'6", so that should give you a little breating room, plus the walls are fairly steep so that will help keep the wall from brushing gainst you. As far as weight goes, for the price, this is money. Just under 6 lbs for 3 people, split up the tent body, poles and rain fly and you wont even notice the weight. Have fun camping in CO.

Pacsafe PacSafe Backpack/Bag Protector
March 28, 2009
Pac Safe is the name. You can get them on the backcountry website, just find the right size. Yes, they are worth money. It is a great investment when travelling somewhere sketchy. You can also keep the pacsafe on your pack while hiking, so for train or funky bus travel it is great. The only thing that sucks is trying to put it back into the little bag it comes with. This is absolutly doable, but it will take a little practice.

March 26, 2009
Greg, let me guess: you are an engineer? ANSI is a north american rating that refers to temp and pressure (but you already know this). Climbing harnesses need to be tested for by newtons (units of force). So, I dont think you find any climbing harness that is ANSI rated. They however are CEN rated. This is a governing body that regulated specific manufacturing standards. If you are looking for a climbing harness this will do, if you are looking for an OSHA harness (while they are way less secure)...keep looking.

La Sportiva Glacier Mountaineering Boot - Men's
March 26, 2009
Murph, trying to guess Aust-US sizing sucks, but lucky for you La Sportiva also uses a Euro size which is regulated by a governing body and therefore much more acuate. Try to figure out your euro size than they you should only have to buy once. The drop down menu at the upper right shows the US Men, US Women and Euro. I would guess you are likely a 44, but try to find a shoe store that can meansure your foot. Often ski boot retailers can determine this also. Good Luck.

March 25, 2009
JP - one of the worst ways to lose heat is through the sole of the boot. If you are standing on an I-Beam in the middle of winter that sukka is just going sap the heat right out of your feet. Try a cork based insole. YOu can get them made in high end ski shops, should cost around $120 and take about an hour. The cork insulates well. The insole will also help correct posture and other foot problems. I added a set to Nepals and feel like I gained a lot of warmth.

LEKI Summit Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair
March 25, 2009
Mike, there are 3 sections to the pole. I will call them the upper, middle and lower. To adjust the shock absorber, grip the upper in your right hand with the tip facing left. Now grab the middle section. Squeeze these to sections together (collapsing the shock absorber) and twist the middle section away from you. You only need to rotate about a 1/3 of a turn to see results. Release the pressure and voila! With new poles, this may be tougher, but it will get easier with time.

March 24, 2009
Dude, you are in a bind. The large crampon teeth are crucial (evo ascent), but the 360 traction is big money when traveling down hill after a long climb. You are not going to get both unless you frankenstien two pairs of snowshoes to make the perfect pair. That being said, I would rather slip/glisade down that fight my way up with crappy crampons. Stick with the Evo Ascents and then you can add tails to them for deep snow or when you have a big pack on your back.

La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot - Men's
March 24, 2009
TC - The makalu is a great backpacking boot. I have owned mine for years. I doubt they will ever wear out and like BV stated they are crampon compatable. The only downside of this boot is that it is super stiff for a hiking boot, and it takes a lot of break in before really ready for use. Expect to put over 50 miles in before breaking in. Another boot that is worth looking into is the Trango. If I was buying a new pair of boots those are what I would buy. Plus they have a gore-tex liner (not that the makalu would ever let water in). The Trangos are also super light, something that I like whenever I backpack.

It should'nt have any problem with pow. I wouldnt take it wake boarding, but on the slopes even in the wettest snow you should be fine.

Salomon Tech Amphibian 2 Shoe - Women's
March 24, 2009
Tech Amphibian is more of a water shoe with good support. Sport amphibian is almost identical, but is more of a land shoe with excellent drainage. The biggest diffrence is in the toe cap and styling. Each could do the others job without a blink of the eye.

Armada AR6 Alpine Ski
March 24, 2009
I would mount right on the midsole mark or maybe +1. Unless you want to ride the park more, mount the skis for what you do. Make them suit you.

Armada AR6 Alpine Ski
March 24, 2009
I am pretty sure those are marked for midsole. So, go -2.5 from that midsole mark. Your mounter should know what you are talking about when you bring them in.

Black Diamond Sabretooth Clip Crampons with ABS
March 24, 2009
I would go with the sabertooths. Sounds like you will be spending more time mountaineering vs. ice climbing. The cyborbs rock on vertical ice, where the sabertooths only perform average to well. The sabertooths will really excel on glacial travel, moderate ice route WI 4 and the will be great on alpine ice which you will see lots of on both mountains. I climbed the north side of Rainier years ago with an older set of sabertooths (old step-in style) and I would pick them again in a heart beat for all my mountaineering. Plus, with the Sabertooths you can use them on a boot that does not a toe lug, so you gain a little versitility there. Good luck on your climbs.

Beal Edlinger 10.2mm Standard Rope
March 24, 2009
No, the rope is not marked in the middle. But you can mark it yourself, just use a bluewater marker or check out this rope if you really want a beal. This is a little thinner, is 60 meter, has a dry coating and is marked in the middle. Good luck hunting for your perfect line.

Black Diamond Covert Winter Pack - 1343-1953cu in
March 23, 2009
There are not any "gear loops", but there is webbing that part of the waist belt. It is not sewn to the waist belt all the way around so you could carabiners to it without any problem. I dont think it would interfere with the fit or comfort of the pack at all. I can past photos if you need me to. Hope this helps.

Arc'teryx Alpha SV Bib - Men's
March 23, 2009
I have climbed many alpine routes with these bibs. I also use a pair of OR gators. The gators keep snow out of boots when high stepping and the help to keep you from cutting the bibs with your crampons. The bibs have a small kevlar patch designed to prevent this, but I have found that you will kick every spot except that spot. Hope this helps.

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe
March 23, 2009
While standing with your arms at your side, fingers pointed down, have a friend measure the distance from the tip of your middle finger to the ground. Take the centimeter measument and round down. That is the size you want. When in doubt go shorter, nothing is worse than an axe that is too long.

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's
March 23, 2009
These are mountaineering and ice climbing boots. They are too stiff for hiking, and your feet would generate so much sweat on warm days you would hate them. If you want a cold weather boot then this is it. Otherwise I would go with ES's suggestion on the trangos.
