Exped SynMat Sleeping Pad

Exped SynMat Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

Though skeptical of the integral pump, it worked perfectly - hand over the uncapped breather hole when compressing, hand off the hole on the rebound, repeat. Nifty! Once inflated, I couldn't believe how comfortable this mat was, in ANY position. Packing back down was a breeze as well: Twist open the two corner valves, fold lengthwise into thirds, and roll it up. There was such little resistance from the fiber-fill insulation when rolling up the mat that it felt like I was rolling a thick blanket. In addition to the included stuff sack, a repair kit with two generous pieces of patch material and adhesive are included. Packed away it;s roughly the diameter of a large coffee can and half again as tall, it weighs slightly less than a Thermarest Trail Pro (L), and has an R value of 6. What a fantastic package.

Evolv Stryker Approach Shoe - Men's

Evolv Stryker Approach Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

Extremely comfortable on-trail, and around town. So much so, that it seems to be the only shoe I've been grabbing off the rack every time I'm out the door, no matter what activity I'm heading out for. The fit is spot-on. I wear an 11.5 dress shoe, and an 11.5 in this shoe places all of my toes right above the working area of the sole. Not much wiggle room, so expect a close but not uncomfortable fit in the toe. The stock honeycomb insole is as good (maybe even a tad better) than some of the aftermarket insoles I have gone through. Having suffered with plantar fasciitis for several years now, I've come to expect very little from stock insoles in most shoes that I have purchased. So, the comfort of these insoles was a very pleasant discovery. Additionally, the TRAX outsole is aggressive and grabby. An extra plus: When I was digging my shoes out of their box, I noticed an advert printed on the box stating that Evolv provides a re-soling service through their website. VERY reasonable prices for a re-sole or re-rand, whenever that time comes. Turns out that this wasn't just a great purchase it was a great investment.

End-of-the-World Reliable

Coleman Fyrestorm Ti Multi-Fuel Stove

Coleman Fyrestorm Ti Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

Purchased this stove just over one year ago. During last December's major Winter storm that knocked our power out for over a week, it was our only means of cooking - and it proved itself an asset immediately. Throughout this past year it has been totally reliable on every outing that we made. And once again, just about two weeks ago during our most recent PacNW Winter-blow power outage, this stove was our only means of cooking. No problems whatsoever. The Fyrestorm Ti is extremely light, easy to disassemble, and has been accepting of all fuels used (so far this includes white gas, high-dollar butane/propane, and dirt-cheap butane/propane). Using WG was pretty straightforward. Pump the fuel bottle 40 times. Open the valves. Ignite. Pump 20 times again & sometimes more. And voila, the pleasant chugging/chuffing sound from the burner lets you know that it's ready to stand alone. Butane/Propane was even easier. The included inverted bottle stand worked great, and I found that I primarily used the gas valve on the stand to regulate the flame height rather than the simmer control. The titanium pot stands and wide-stance base have been great for all pots, pans, speckled blue camp percolators and jiffy-pop pkgs. that I have used. Incredibly stable in use, even using a 10" cast iron pan set upon the pot stands & not one wiggle, tip or close-call. I would buy this item again in a heartbeat if I ever wake up and find that it's missing.

Large Frame + Trail Pro = Many Sleepless Nights

Therm-a-Rest Trail Pro Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Trail Pro Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 2 August 18, 2008

First off, by no means am I giving Therm-a-Rest as a brand any negative feedback. Their quality in construction is top notch, and their customer service is great. This is completely subjective (regarding comfort), and I hope it helps someone out there who might be considering this pad who happens to have a similar size/build as I.

My rating for this sleeping pad stems from the past several uses I have put the Trail Pro (L) pad through. I am 6'-4" and 240lbs. After looking through the many selections available for sleeping pads on Backcountry, I decided that the Trail Pro was the best compromise between Weight of product, R value (as stated on Therm-a-Rest's website), Quality of Construction, and Price. I ordered two -- One for me, and one for my wife.

When I received the items, I was not disappointed with the construction at all. VERY solid product. (As an aside, I purchased a couple of Therm-a-Rest patch repair kits and valve replacement kits to keep on-hand for backcountry repairs. Thankfully I did, because when I inflated the two pads per the included instructions to let the foam expand and "learn" the proper set, one of my cats decided that she would test out my pad while I had my back turned. When I saw her sitting cozily on the pad I carefully removed her, and moved my operation elsewhere in our apartment. Turns out that just the pressure from one of her back claws as she sat punctured the top fabric of the pad -- found that out while camping, since the leak took several hours overnight to deplete the inflation enough to notice -- and I had to use a patch. The patch kit works incredibly well, and is fast at that. Kudos for ease of repair -- not so much for my choice of gear prep. location!)

In use, however, I found that I could not sleep at all well on this pad. Either fully inflated, or slightly less so, I could find no position to sleep in that I could remain in for longer than 20 minutes tops. The result was a constant battle to find a comfortable side to rest on, try to fall asleep, then reawaken later to start the process all over again. Not one night did I sleep all the way through. Both hips and shoulders felt like I was laying on concrete all night long. My wife, on the other hand (who at 4'10" and considerably less weight than I) slept soundly and didn't change positions once all night -- I can attest to that since I was up each night, and each trip we've made this past summer, and I watched her sleep soundly on each occasion.

My conclusion is that my body geometry and pressure points don't jive at all well with the Trail Pro. I've considered purchasing a different Therm-a-Rest version -- such as the base camp -- but I really don't feel like backpacking the additional weight. The Trail Pro was about the limit on weight that I wanted to haul around. So now the quest begins again to find a pad that works for me.

Therm-a-Rest Universal Hotbond Repair Kit

Therm-a-Rest Universal Hotbond Repair Kit

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2008

Easy instructions, plenty of patches (sm. round and lg. square), plenty of glue. Solid results when needed. Bought two, and both kits fit snugly into a large pharmacy medicine bottle (with two Therm-a-Rest valve repair kits). I never leave home without it!

Outdoor Research Hydroseal DryComp AirX Sacks

Outdoor Research Hydroseal DryComp AirX Sacks

Rating for this product: 5 August 18, 2008

After purchasing a Sierra Designs Tiros 2 tent, I really wanted to reduce the huge-diameter factory bag/pkg. it comes in. This OR bag turned out to be just the ticket. I roll the tent and fly together around the poles (in the factory pole sack), and this roll fits nicely into the OR AirX Sack -- the diameter of the bag is perfect for this application. I have just enough room in the top for my Sea To Summit XXS sil cordura sack stuffed with stakes, guy-lines, and figure 9s. The whole package is snug as a bug in the size "4" bag (with just enough room at the top to roll the seal 3 times before buckling, and a little slack to tug out of each of the cinch straps), and it centers very nicely down the main compartment of my backpack. As would be expected, I've packed and unpacked this sack many times, and packed it tightly against other items in my backpack or in my duffle bag -- no problems or design weaknesses encountered. The AirX sack is tough as nails, and well constructed. I'll definitely be buying more.
