Cool shoes

Patagonia Footwear Boaris Shoe - Men's

Patagonia Footwear Boaris Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 28, 2011

Good shoes, like skate shoes on steroids. Good tread (what else can you expect from Vibram) I usually take a 10.5 and the 10 fits me fine. The leather/suade takes a while to break in, but once it does it's REAL comfy. Probably my fav shoe. I am wearing them right now. FYI these are really similar to the "hog tie" also from patagonia.

Great down pullover

Stoic Hadron Down Anorak - Women's

Stoic Hadron Down Anorak - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 28, 2011

Super light, keeps you warm, what else can you want.

I got my GF a small, and it fits her nicely (a tad on the short side in the torso, but only slightly) for reference she is 5'8" and 115lbs, with long arms. It's so light and packs down really small. It's no the warmest down jacket out there, but does the job, and if the temperature really dips you can always throw a shell overtop to keep you toasty.

As a warmth insurance for ski trips, or hiking in the shoulder seasons, for the price I doubt you can beat it.

Initial thoughts

Stoic Hadron Down Anorak - Men's

Stoic Hadron Down Anorak - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 22, 2011

Overall, I like it, and am going to keep it.

Pros: REALLY light, packs down REALLY small (I fit it in a box 7" x 4" x 3" without really squishing it down). I drove home with the A/C on, and it was a reasonably cold day, seemed warm enough. I'll have to re-post about warmth, after I try it out in the field. The Pertex Quantum Exterior seems water resistant (it's raining here today and shed the rain pretty good walking from car to home, etc) but I doubt it would hold up for long exposure.

Cons: Don't REALLY care for the color (see pictures) I got the "Excalibur/Vintage" color. The exterior (Excalibur) is a purplish grey, which seems alright. And the interior is purple (Vintage), why Stoic can't make awesome gear, in not so "fabulous" colors is beyond me. All in all, this isn't such a big deal. The cuffs look like rigid webbing in the photos, but they are softer, so I like that. The problem is they are REALLY tight, I like to be able to shove the sleeves up my arm if I am doing something with my hands, and this makes it kind of hard to do. I guess since they are fairly long (1.5") it means you wont really have much material getting in your way, but still this tightness is pretty awkward, hopefully they will loosen over time. If you have big wrists (which I dont) this might be a problem for you.

Fit: I am 5'10" 175, and the M fits me well (see photo)

The North Face Pumori Fleece Jacket - Men's

October 17, 2011

not REALLY two pockets inside... but the outside pockets are sewn in such a way that you can use the fabric as a pocket that closes along 3 sides, and opens from the top; so it's a pocket, but not one that closes tight, but works good enough for most things. I use this when I have it zipped in to a compatible shell, bad part is if you even bail while skiing/snowboarding, you lose everything in those pockets

Great Fleece

Patagonia R1 Fleece Pullover - Men's

Patagonia R1 Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 14, 2011

I own two patagonia fleeces, a few northface ones, a couple columbia fleeces and several others (Yes I have more fleeces than I know what to do with) This one takes the cake though.

Not the fanciest sweater, if you're going out to dinner or what not, but nice enough that you could probably get away with wearing it to work.

The waffeling pattern of thwe fleece, really holds in the heat, but is pretty good in the wind too. It's light weight like 100 wt fleece, but holds in warmth closer to 200 or 300 wt. I'm 5'10" 175 lbs, and the M fits me well, maybe a little on the tighter side (or athletic fit) but I like that for layering and it looks better ;)

This is worth the money, although at MSRP it's pretty pricey.

Stoic LTWT Sleeping Pad - Short

Stoic LTWT Sleeping Pad - Short

Rating for this product: 4 September 14, 2011

People who are complaining about this are missing the point. This is NOT a BA air core, it's not meant to sleep on a bed of nails and insulate you below 0. It's great for summer and warm spring/fall trips and really keeps the weight down.

It does what it's made for, and does it well. But dont take this winter camping, or if you're sleeping on gravel.

Chaco Flip Eco Tread Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 9, 2011

Been walking around on these for most of the summer now, and I love them. I even picked up another pair on SAC (dont know why, because they show no sign of wear) the strap has gotten a little looser, the only reason I noticed, is because when I first got them they seemed a little tight, but now they fit real well. They have great arch support, and dont get funky after days and days of use. Flat out replaced my Reef sandals.

I had the stoic Breathe T shirt, long sleeve, and had a problem with the thumb holes starting to frey, but not with this shirt. it's very well constructed, and fits really well on me (5'10" 170lbs and got a Med)

Rating for this product: 4 May 7, 2011

Good quality, fits me really nice (I got a M, I'm 5'10" 175, with longish arms for my height) perfect weight for spring, early summer... probably a little too thick for hot summer weather, but I am loving it right now.

Addition: material still looks good, and it doesnt smell or anything, but the stitiching around the thumb hole is coming out. If you dont use the thumb thing, then I wouldnt worry, but it kinda bugs me

Pretty good

Stoic Welder Trigger Mitt

Stoic Welder Trigger Mitt

Rating for this product: 4 February 19, 2011

I dont think these gloves are bad, as some people have said. But you can tell they are a "first run" The wool liner is very warm, but a little "un-finished" - meaning there are some bumps and lines that make the feel; less than comfortable. The outershell is nice, but there are some weird seams on the thumb and index finger; while you have more dexterity than a mitten, it's not as good as you can have in a glove. If you can find them for cheap (over 50% off) I'd get them, but not for full price

Addition after 1 months use: I really tried to find some faults with these, but they are pretty great, other than the sizing (buy 1 [maybe 1.5] size larger) The liner needs to be fiddled with (maybe take it out, wear it, then put it back in the main glove) and then it's comfy, all 3 pairs I have came with the liner all screwed up and folded, and was uncomfortable when I put my hand in. The gauntlet closure is good, and I've never had any snow come in. My hands have never been cold in them, and I found once you get used to the weird seem on the thumb, it actually works. If you see 'em on SAC, definitely worth getting!

G3 Onyx AT Binding

Rating for this product: 4 October 28, 2010

I haven't had any ejections or problems, and most people I've talked to have liked this binding too, don't know what is with all the hate on for this binding on here.

The older model (09/10) like this the front toe piece is stiff and hard to get your foot into. Apparently they revamped the new ones so it's easier to use.

I've never used this binding for flying of cliffs, or taking jumps, and maybe that's why people dont like it. But for backcountry, powder, hiking, or groomed runs this binding performs GREAT!

Rating for this product: 4 October 28, 2010

I havent had any problems with rusting or with build quality, and I have put it through it's paces. As most people said, it's a good all around for a weekend or overnighter. If you're going to be out in the bush for a week or more, and can pack more gear, you might want a more substantial piece of equipment

Only problem I had is with the can opener: it's not so good, but with a few alterations (grinder and pliers) it works as good as the victronix ones. Overall,I'd buy this again.

Looks good

Backcountry.com Titanium Cookset - 1650ml

Backcountry.com Titanium Cookset - 1650ml

Rating for this product: 5 September 28, 2010

Looks good hella light. havent used it yet but thought I'd throw up the stats for those questions below.

Pot holds 5.5 cups (~1250mL) of water (probably realistically 1L of usable space with boiling and cooking [rice/pasta incl])
Pan is ~400mL

Pot and handle(s) = 123.5g
Pan and handle = 67.5

Overall very light, and probably good for 2 people.

Not a hiking shoe

Chaco Redrock Mesh Hiking Shoe - Men's

Chaco Redrock Mesh Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 September 24, 2010

Really this is a street shoe (which in that respect is a pretty sweet shoe) but as a hiking shoe this sucks. There's not much support and the laces need to be re-adjusted constantly. The sole is very weak, and if you're walking on any uneven ground your feet will be killing you in an hour.

Pretty good, but as some reviewers have said, it gets COOL when the temperature drops. Definitely recommend some extra layers, even with a -5C sleeping bag and a tarp as a rain cover I was freezing in 10C degree weather.

Glow in the Dark

Reef Fanning Sandal - Men's

Reef Fanning Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 September 24, 2010

Reef fanning sandals are classic. Good sandal grips your feet well, and pretty much all around great sandal. I got the glow in the dark one and it seems to be pretty good, but the glow in the dark places are just silly. Why not just make a grey sandal.

Like 'em better than Reefs

Ocean Minded Seaweed Sandal - Men's

Ocean Minded Seaweed Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 24, 2010

Had the Reef Fanning Sandal, and loved it. But these sandals have a bit more arch support and are more firm (while still being comfortable enough to walk in all day) I only got them at the end of this summer so I didnt have a chance to wear them much, but I can tell they are going to be my go-to flippy floppy next beach season

Feecey goodness

The North Face Pumori Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Pumori Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 18, 2010

Good fleece that does what a fleece needs to.

Man is this thing warm... about 10C out today, and was boiling in it with just a shirt underneath. Seems to keep wind out OK, but havent had any really strong winds yet.

It's not fancy, no extra pockets, no extra padding or different types of material, but it's a good fleece. It layers well, and at 5'10" 170 lbs I could fit a thin layer underneath it (size M) quite comfortably.

I wouldnt pay retail for it, as I think it's too "bare-bones" to pay 100$ for... but that's what backcountry.com is for right?

Pretty good pack

Osprey Packs Manta 25 Hydration Pack - 1300-1500cu in

Osprey Packs Manta 25 Hydration Pack - 1300-1500cu in

Rating for this product: 4 September 18, 2010

I'll echo some comments from previous reviews first: good quality pack, seems very sturdy, but not heavy. Nice ventilation, and good amount of storage for a hydration pack. The little waist belt pockets are kinda gimmicky, I could see fitting a small point and shoot camera in there, or a knife/multi-tool, but not much else.

I agree that it's STUPID that osprey didn't include a detachable hose (so I had to go out an buy a splice for about 6$ and install it) but the bladder seems of good quality, and havent had any leakage problems yet (fingers crossed)

If you really cinch up the rain cover you can get it to stay but it is finicky, would have made sense to have a bit of a lip at the top, but the shoulder straps come right to the top, making it hard to keep in place.

All in all a good pack that I would buy again, but do yourself a favor and get a hose disconnect aftermarket.

ohh also I am 5'10" and I got the M/L but could have got the S/M... I think I'm kind of on the border in terms of height FYI

Osprey Packs Aether 70 Backpack- 4000-4600cu in

Rating for this product: 5 July 14, 2010

I love this pack. I took it on a 4 day backcountry trip. The 70L was enough for everything you need for a trip that long. I could see taking it for up to a week, but anything beyond that it might be a little too small. All the little bells and whistles (straps galore, sleeping bag compartment, detachable lumbar pack) were great, and all worked super well. I highly recommend this pack

Osprey Packs Ariel 55 Backpack - Women's - 3400cu in

Rating for this product: 4 July 14, 2010

A few things missing on this pack, but still a great deal at 40% off. Would have been great to have a sleeping bag compartment. My girlfriend (who is slight in frame fitted a size medium well) carried this last weekend for a 4 day hike in the backcountry full to the brim, and she didnt have any complaints in terms of weight distribution. two thumbs up
