Sorel Cody Shoe - Women's

October 5, 2009

I'd say the safer option is to get the bigger size. It's better to have a little extra room than have them be too small and scrunch her toes.

prAna Mojo Shorts - Men's

prAna Mojo Shorts - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 September 30, 2009

I heard a lot of stellar reviews about these shorts, so I figured I better try some. The materials are fine, and I can see why some people love them, but they're not what I thought they would be. I can't imagine getting too hot in them, since the material is so lightweight and airy. But on the flipside, it's really annoying when you put anything in the pockets, because it'll make the shorts swing around and get all out of wack when you move or sit down. I think they may as well not have pockets at all, and I've stopped trying to use them for anything. The other thing I wasn't stoked on is the waistband. Again, I'm sure it's great for some people, such as those wearing a harness, since it's flat and won't dig into you when the harness is on over it. But aside from the harness thing, I think it's just annoying because it makes your underwear/boxers ride up like no man's business.

Not sure

Backcountry.com Cocona Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Backcountry.com Cocona Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 September 30, 2009

I too am torn about this shirt. I really like how they look, and they fit me pretty well since I'm skinny, but the chest/armpit area does seem a lot tighter than other shirts. I'm also not sure about the Cocona material on the inside. I've only worn it a few times, but so far I've experienced some definite nippular chafage. Maybe that'll go away once it gets washed a few more times or something. I'm not really sure if it's the material or what, but that aspect wasn't too comfortable. Not a big deal - it won't stop me from wearing the shirt - but still worth mentioning.

Cobblestones

Metolius Macro Hold Set - 2 Pack

Metolius Macro Hold Set - 2 Pack

Rating for this product: 4 September 30, 2009

I got some of the Cobblestones, and I like em. They're bigger than I thought they'd be - big enough to match on pretty easily. They're also more positive than I thought. They are slopers, but they're not difficult holds at all when you put them in the right orientation. And yes, they come with bolts and t-nuts.

Backcountry.com Merino Hiking Sock - 3-Pack

Backcountry.com Merino Hiking Sock - 3-Pack

Rating for this product: 5 September 30, 2009

These are great socks. I love merino wool, it's awesome for any occasion. Hot? It'll keep your feet cool and wick moisture. Cold? It'll keep your feet toasty, and won't get wet. (wet = cold) I wear these for everything from lounging around the house (they go great with hot cocoa), to playing basketball in the summer (they'll add a few mm to your vertical). Oh, and they work for hiking too.

Review Title

Backcountry.com SynthTrail Crew Sock - 3-Pack

Backcountry.com SynthTrail Crew Sock - 3-Pack

Rating for this product: 3 September 30, 2009

These socks aren't bad. They're pretty thin, especially in certain areas. That works well to keep your feet from getting too hot/sweaty, but it seems like it might shorten the life span of the socks. Time will tell I guess. The synthetic material does tend to pick up a lot of hair and stuff, so it may not be the thing to wear around the house if you have a lot of pets or shedding rugs. I like how they feel when you put them on - supportive and snug - but as other people have said, they do kind of slide around in your shoes, especially if the shoes are smooth on the inside.

Nice chalk bucket for bouldering

Mad Rock Chalk Pod

Mad Rock Chalk Pod

Rating for this product: 5 August 5, 2009

This thing is sweet. I bring it along for bouldering, pop it open, throw it on the ground, and bam, everyone I'm climbing with has access to chalk. It's stable, won't tip over easily, has a pocket on the top for keys, etc., a couple brush holders, plenty of room inside for big/multiple hands, a nice handle, and it folds up small so you can fit it in your bag. It also zips shut, and cinches around the chalk area too, so chalk doesn't spill and get all over everything. If there's something more you'd want in a bouldering chalk bag, I'm not sure what it is.

Clifbar Builders Protein Bar - 12 Pack

Clifbar Builders Protein Bar - 12 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

Holy crap these things are tasty. Better than most candy bars, except maybe Twix, and you won't feel guilty about eating them. Unless you're pounding them like they were, uh, candy. A little on the expensive side, but hey, you need the protein, right?

Shimano America Brake Cable Sets

June 22, 2009

Actually no, I just got the standard set, and the cables don't have the endings for road levers; they'll only work with MTB brake levers. If you want road brake cables, you'll have to go with the "Dura-Ace", not "Standard".

Slightly bulky

CamelBak Phone Pocket

CamelBak Phone Pocket

Rating for this product: 2 May 6, 2009

Overall I wasn't too impressed with this thing. I thought it would be nice to have my phone or digital camera right there on the shoulder strap of my backpack, but when I put it on there, it stuck out so much that it got in the way and kind of looked ridiculous, to the point where I took it off until I can find a less intrusive place to put it. Also, I have a normal sized flip-open phone (Samsung A717), but the case seems to be built for a longer phone, so I'll have to put another square of velcro on it in order to hold my phone securely. It does have a decent amount of padding though, so I wouldn't worry about the phone/camera getting bumped or anything.

Refillable chalk sock

Metolius Chalk Sock

Metolius Chalk Sock

Rating for this product: 4 May 6, 2009

This thing is nice for several reasons:
1) Keeps chalk from getting all over the place,
2) helps moderate how much you use, so you don't have to get more chalk every week
2) keeps the gym from becoming one big cloud of chalk. better for people with asthma or people who like fresh air.
3) you can refill it, so you're not throwing the empty chalk ball away every week, when you run out of chalk. better for the environment.
4) Some people even boulder with these without a chalk bag, which could save you some cash
5) You can throw them at high-up holds, to get some chalk on there
6) When your chalk bag tips over, you just pick up the ball and put it back in, instead of making a huge mess and wasting it

Five Ten Copperhead Lace-up Climbing Shoe

Yeah, I demoed these a few days ago, and wore the same size in these and the Moccasyms. Same sizing and just as comfortable. And they'll stretch just like the Moccasyms too. Great shoes.

Pretty awesome

ACR RMK Res-Q Reflective Tape

ACR RMK Res-Q Reflective Tape

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2009

This stuff is pretty awesome. Some of the highest quality reflective stuff I've ever seen - it really grabs light and even seems to glow in daylight. The stuff is super sticky too; it'll stick to pretty much any surface, including stuff that goes underwater, like life jackets. Well ok, those float, but you know what I mean. It comes with 4 4x4 inch sheets, which you can cut into smaller pieces and put reflectors wherever you want them.

Not for garments with wicking liners

Nikwax TX Direct Wash In

Nikwax TX Direct Wash In

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2009

This stuff works really well. But keep in mind, it is made mainly for rain gear without a liner on the inside. If you have a jacket with a fleece backing or fuzziness on the inside, go with the spray on TX Direct rather than the wash-in. It says that right on the label.

good thin beanie

Backcountry.com The Goat Fleece Beanie

Backcountry.com The Goat Fleece Beanie

Rating for this product: 4 December 23, 2008

This is a pretty thin beanie, and fits really snugly on your head. It won't keep you very warm on its own, but it covers your ears and it's thin enough to wear under something else to give a little more insulation. I have a pretty small head (about 21") and it fits me fine.

Nice pants.

Mountain Hardwear Piero Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Piero Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2008

I got the Peat Moss color, and from the picture, it looks like a shiny, smooth material, but really it's a matte green color, with a slightly rough texture. The green is also a little lighter and less vibrant than it appears on the site (which is a good thing by me). The pants are pretty thick and burly; I don't think they'll ever wear out. Think of them as a family heirloom. The hip pockets have a nice soft fleece lining, but they're a little too small. I think the Mountain Hardwear nut-shaped rivets are a nice touch. I'm 5'9" with a 30 inch waist, and the 30/reg's are perfect.

Backcountry.com Shift Element Softshell Jacket - Men's

Abyss is like a darkish navy blue. In the picture it looks black, but it isn't.Looking at the Phantom color on the site, I thought it looked like a dark gray, almost black. But it's actually a grayish sea-green color.

Western Mountaineering VersaLite Super Sleeping Bag: 10 Degree Down DO NOT USE

November 20, 2008

According to Western Mountaineering, the "Super" denotes the addition of a draft collar. Odd that Backcountry's other Versalite (the one that isn't labeled "Super") is also described as having a draft collar. You might ask one of the BC folks to check on that. Both bags actually have a draft collar, but the "Super" version has an oversized (bigger) draft collar.
