Great quality jacket

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 10, 2009

I have now owned this jacket for about 4 years and have been very happy with it. Aside from being a very warm jacket, its construction is high quality and there is good attention to detail with its features. I am particular pleased with the fleece lined pockets and collar, as well as the elastic bottom draw cord that are located inside the pockets (so you don't have to take your hands out). It also packs down to a small size for easy packing. As per other reviews, the length may be a tad short especially if it rides up, but keeping the draw cords tight will prevent this. In my opinion, this is a better alternative to the seemingly ubiquitous North Face Nuptse jacket

Pretty good day pack, but some flaws

The North Face Chugach 14 Backpack - 850cu in

The North Face Chugach 14 Backpack - 850cu in

Rating for this product: 4 February 10, 2009

I've used to pack for skiing for a couple of seasons now and have been quite happy with it. The sleeve for the hydration is bladder is excellent as it is a separate compartment that that unzips (2 zippers) on the side through the entire length of the pack and the shoulder straps to allow you to easily to insert your bladder and tube. It also allows you to zip up the entire tube inside the shoulder strap to prevent the water inside the tube from freezing over. To reach for a drink you can easily unzip part of the shoulder strap to pull the tube out. The pack is large enough for daily ski accessories - goggles, spare gloves, light fleece, food, etc - but retains a low profile, so it's comfortable on the chairlift.

There are a couple of issues however. First, the skis need to be attached diagonally across the back of the pack - at the top, the strap securing the skis can sometimes slip, causing the skis to drop to a more horizontal position .... not great when walking through crowds in the village. Second, the straps are too long - this problem is exacerbated by having different straps for snowboard and skis.

Overall, I would recommend this pack, but it is more suited to a snowboarder than a skier due to the first issue mentioned above.

Very good but not perfect

Marmot Aeolos Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Marmot Aeolos Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 August 8, 2008

I bought this to go summer camping around mediterranean Europe. The tent was relatively easy and quick to set up even on first attempt. It is very spacious inside, thanks to the bent poles, with good head room. it also has good sized vestibules. Although it's a bit heavier than the light-weights on the market, it is much more roomy, and comfortable. It also has heavier coating on fly and floor than the light-weights which ensures it can withstand heavier rain. For me these trade-offs are important as it makes the tent much more practical. The only downside of the inside tent itself is the slanted pockets on the corners which means things do fall out. However I think the tent is roomy enought to leave things lying on the floor.

I've read some reviews in other sites that suggest the fly has a poor design and it experiences dips as water collects on top at certain spots. Despite having grommets to insert the shorter poles on the ceiling onto the fly, dips can happen as I found since I didn't use the guy ropes when I first set it up. Nonethless, on its 1st use it had to endure a 12 hours on continuous severe thunderstorm with very heavy rain in the Slovenian mountains and it held up fine and we stayed dry. (I also purchased the footprint when kept the floor perfectly dry). Afterwards I did use the guy ropes on 3 corners of the 4 corners (as strangely, only 3 line clips were provided) and the fly pulled much tighter without any dips. You do need to make sure you stake the fly well and use the guy lines to ensure this. The vestible door design however is not great as you can get wet opening the doors from the inside. It is also a bit tricky to keep the doors rolled up due to the position of the tie-ons. Also when it is rolled up, it does sag and touch the tent wall so you can't do while it's raining or wet.

Overall, I think it is a very good 3 season tent with some flaws. It is spacious and quick to set up. Ensuring you stake out the fly properly is the trick in making this tent work well when it's raining.

Good quality

Big Agnes Yampa Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Big Agnes Yampa Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 August 8, 2008

I was recommended this sleeping bag by the online salesperson and was very happy with. This is essentially a half-bag that requires you to slide your Thermarest into the bottom sleeve so no down is wasted in keeping you warm. This helps save space and weight when packed. More importantly you bag won't rotate or twist when you turn at night. Sliding the Thermarest intothe sleeve was very quick and easy.

It is sufficiently spacious and comfortable for summer camping and I found the temperature very easy to adjust by zipping and unzipping the bag. For colder conditions, I plan to use it as an outer bag with another bag inside.

I was also impressed by the quality of the finishing and the loftiness of the down. Overall, an excellent bag

super comfortable

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest ProLite 4 Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 August 8, 2008

I had been using the Thermarest Ultralite (which rolls up to a very small size) for the past 7 years and have felt it never quite provided sufficient cushioning for a side sleeper such as myself. So i decided to upgrade to the Prolite4 as it does provide an extra half inch thickness. It did make a huge difference! It is very confortable even for a side sleeper. Furthermore, it rolls up to quite a small size. When put into the stuff sack, it is almost as small as the old Ultralite model. The quality is very good like all other Thermarest products. A great lightweight sleep pad.
