The Best Tele Binding on the Market

22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding

22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding

Rating for this product: 5 9 hours ago

Hammerheads are really the best telemark binding out there. I skied on O1s for a couple of years, until I got fed up with their constant maintenance issues and breakages. The Hammerheads provide smooth power and the huge toe piece makes my boots feel super-stable in the binding. They are easier to clip on, easier to clip off, and unlike the O1s, they don't back off while you're skiing (the O1s require constant adjustment of the cartridges to keep them at the desired preload). The adjustable pivot point makes changing resistance a breeze, so I can crank it up for gnarly, technical terrain, and crank it down for more mellow days. While they don't tour as well as the O1s, the forward pivot point setting is almost free pivot, and I'm amped to have my HHs on the way down. Nothing better to drive big skis. I LOVE HAMMERHEADS!

22 Designs Hammerhead Telemark Binding

NO, that's the beauty of Hammerheads: they have adjustable resistance. You can slide the pivot point of the binding forward to lower the resistance and make it easier to learn tele turns, then, as you improve, you can slide it back to increase the resistance and get more power out of your turns. I highly recommend the Hammerhead for any level of tele skier...

Black Diamond O1 Telemark Ski Binding

I think mid-stiff is right on. The rid-stiffs pair up great with stiff boots and hard charging skiing styles, but you being a lady I assume that you are lighter than the average man, and so I think the mid-stiffs will probably suit you quite well even if you do charge hard.

Scarpa T-Race Telemark Ski Boot

Hey Riley, if you telemark aggressively, you're going to love the T-Race, straight up. It's stiff and responsive, great for every kind of turn and terrain. The main differences between the T-1 and the T-Race are: T-Race has stiffer plastic and a stiffer flexing bellows, T-Race has a power strap across the top to really crank down the upper part of the boot, and the T-Race does not have a walk/tour mode. The lack of a tour mode doesn't bother me when touring unless I am skinning on flat ground. On the uphills, your foot is naturally angled forward anyways, so I don't even notice. If you are charging hard on teles, don't even think about the T-1, the T-Race is the boot you want.

Line Prophet 100 Ski

November 11, 2009

I have tele bindings on the Karhu Team 100s, which are the exact same ski with a different top sheet. They rip. I use Hammerheads, but it depends on what boot you have. If you've got a T-Race or Custom, I'd go Hammereheads, they pair up nicely with stiff boots to provide a lot of power and control. If you're into touring, Black Diamond O1s. You can check out the factory mounting recommendations here: http://karhuskico.com/images/tech/karhu_techbulletin_0910.pdf. Use the measurements from the Team 100. The numbers refer to mms measured from the tail along the surface of the ski to pin line of the bindings.

Voile Switchback Telemark Ski Binding

November 10, 2009

You don't need any adapter plates to mount switchbacks on K2 skis. If you have the pre-drilled insert holes in the skis, great, the Voiles will fit into those. If not, just mount them the same way you would mount any tele binding into a ski. The mounting screws that come with your Voiles will work in the inserts as well. The mounting plates are ONLY for Hammerhead bindings which have a different hole pattern than most telemark bindings.

Hey Ron, not sure if they changed the ski from last year, but the 09s were a hell of a lot of fun. They are not "soft and playful" per se, and needed some speed to come to life, but if you are comfortable making fast tele turns, they are a great choice. I'd also check out the Line Prophet 100s.

Black Diamond Zealot Ski

October 29, 2009

The Line Prophet 100s come in a 172 length. They won't give you quite as much float as the Justice and aren't rockered, but are definitely stiff and can handle high speeds and groomed runs as well as pow and crud...a little more of an all-mountain ski. They have a short turning radius (17m as opposed to the Zealots 33m!) which I like for tele, allows you to make quick turns in tight spaces...

K2 Hellbent Alpine Ski

October 28, 2009

If the 179s feel too short for you, go with the 189s. Especially at your height and weight. The dramatic rocker of the Hellbents makes them ski much shorter than their length. Rocker helps skis initiate the turn, so you can ski a longer ski than you normally would. I don't know what that rep was talking about, but I hardly know anyone who skis the 179s, and I have seen people ski tight lines with the 189s no problem.

Rating for this product: 5 October 28, 2009

The Buckles on my T-Races started to bend out of shape at the end of last season (NOTE that I haven't heard of this being a common problem...50+ days of hard skiing will naturally yield some wear and tear). I emailed warranty@scarpa.com, and received a very prompt reply. Because I was within the one-year warranty, new buckles were mailed to me with no hassle, a really great customer service experience. (The same can't be said for some other brands, like G3, which has a terrible warranty program. NEVER BUY G3!) Scarpa you rock!

Black Diamond O2 Telemark Binding

October 27, 2009

# Standard size fits boot sole lengths over 315 mm
# Small size fits boot sole lengths under 315 mm.
Not sure exactly how the TJ measures at a size 25, but you can just take a tape measure and do it yourself. Those boots will fit the O2s, but I'd get the free-flex cartridges, as the bellows on the TJs are very soft, and the O2 is capable of overpowering soft boots.

Armada JJ Ski

October 22, 2009

Hey man, I know the technique that you're talking about, allows me to keep up with all my alpine buddies on big pow days. I've never seen anyone tele on the JJs, but I've tele'd on a few rocker skis (Kuro, megawatt) and had them right on center and they really worked for me. With the tail rocker in the JJs, I'd be concerned about wheelie-effect if you mount further back, especially if you're weighting and initiating the turn with your front foot. Your weight on that front ski is going to be more rear-wards than an alpine skier's would be, and I'd worry about the lack of stability in the short, rocker tail. If you do try this, post a review on how it turns out, I'm interested...

They are adjustable for length. The front loop that hooks over the tip of your skis is manually installed on the skin by feeding the skin through the loop and sticking it back to itself to hold the loop in place. So you can trim down the skin to your desired length and then attach the tip loop and you're good to go.

Line Prophet 90 Ski

October 15, 2009

I disagree with Shane. I feel that you should absolutely get the 186 for this ski. Line's ski short because of the twin-tip, and they also have a VERY short turn radius (look around the site and compare the 19.5m radius with other skis). Ski length is a function of WEIGHT and height, at 185lbs you should definitely be on the 186 in the Prophet 90. Going longer will also force you to ski a little faster to get the most out of the ski, which in turn will improve your technique.

The O1 is a great binding for doing anything. It has a fantastic touring mechanism that switches it to free-pivot at the push of a button with your pole, and the binding itself provides excellent power and control. T-Race! T-Race! T-Race! I also ski prophet 100s and prophet 130s, with Hammerheads, I' 6'2" and 170lbs. The lack of a touring mode only bothers me when skinning on flats, (uphill your legs are angled forward anyway), but the difference in performance is well worth it. The T-Race rips, especially with big skis like the 130's, and stiffer flexing skis like the 100s. DON'T get the T1, you'll be cheating yourself out of hard-charging grin-inducing turns.

Rossignol Viper X1 Jr ZIP System Ski w/ Comp J Binding - Kids'

October 6, 2009

Hey Jimmy, there's nothing wrong with the base of the boot extending beyond the width of the ski. With any skinny ski you're going to have that problem, whether it's an adult or kids ski. You would have to really put the ski on it's edge in order to contact the boot to the snow, something an 11 year old (and many adults, for that matter) would have difficulty doing. That aside, you might want to consider getting your son a new pair of skis anyway. If he's in adult boots, a pair of adult skis would give him the tools necessary to improve his skiing...

Dynafit Manaslu Ski

October 6, 2009

Hey OldDude. The inserts are designed specifically for Dynafit Bindings, BUT, you can mount any binding to the Manaslu by drilling holes away from the inserts. The Manaslus have a Titanal Plate in the binding area, which can be tricky when drilling holes (the plate is thicker than a regular Titanal topsheet. There's a good article at WildSnow about this very issue: "Drilling your own holes and mounting bindings in the Titanal plate area is ok so long as this is done by an expert mechanic who uses the correct bit for a metal top skin, taps the holes, mounts with epoxy and doesn’t over tighten the screws. Last winter, many Manaslu skis were tested with bindings such as Duke and Fritschi, mounted without using the nylon inserts." http://www.wildsnow.com/1457/dynafit-manaslu-binding-holes-mounting/

Black Diamond Push Telemark Ski Boot - Men's

October 1, 2009

Hi Marc, Glad to hear you're making the switch and pursuing a more enlightened approach to turns. The Push would be a fine choice to start on, as would the Scarpa T1. Scarpas tend to run a little narrower and BD is somewhere in the middle in terms of width (Garmonts are wider, if you're into touring, the Syner-G might be a good choice as well). The T1 and the Push will be forgiving enough to start out, but will also provide enough performance to stay with you as you improve. Good luck!

Garmont 7tm Power Releasable Telemark Ski Binding

That's a bummer Ralph, sorry to hear about your ankle. We've got the Voile Hardwire (http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Voile-Hardwire-CRB-Telemark-Binding/VOL0004M.html) which I've skied on and personally don't like very much. Never skied on the Garmonts, but the movable pivot point on them is similar to the Hammerheads, and will give you the ability to transfer more power to the turn if you are a more aggressive skier. The classic side-of-foot cartridge style is OK for cruising, but I've always preferred the option of increasing the torque and leverage of the binding with a movable pivot point. I'd go with the Garmonts.

Line Sir Francis Bacon Ski

September 21, 2009

The SFB is floppy, great for deep and soft snow, NOT good for eastern skiing Don't buy it if you're going to ski in the east on hardpack, it's not made for it. As for recommendations, what's your ability level? Do you ski mainly groomers? If you like to rip groomers really fast get a long ski with a skinny waist and some substantial sidecut to rail turns on harder snow. I live in Utah, so can't recommend specific models, but the SFB is the wrong direction to go...

Line Prophet 100 Ski

September 21, 2009

The Prophet 100 likes speed, is pretty stiff, and not "forgiving" per se, but is a great ski for hard/soft snow, variable conditions...I ski these for packed powder/hard pack days and Volkl Kuros for the deep stuff. I really like the Lines.

Rossignol S7 Barras Ski

The S7 Barras are AWESOME in trees and tight spaces, the rocker tip and early rise tail, combined with a generous amount of sidecut allow these skis to swivel, smear, and slash turns on a dime.

Line Prophet 130 Ski

August 27, 2009

HAMMERHEADS dude, they'll change your life. I will never ski another binding. Especially for the Prophet 130s, which are stiff, the hammerheads on position 5 give you incredible power and control. Make sure to pair them with a stiff boot (I ski T-Races and love the combo)...I have HH's on my Volkl Kuros (also a huge, heavy ski) and can't say enough about how great they are. Not the best for touring, but I wouldn't take my kuros on a tour anyways...

Line Pandora Ski - Women's

August 26, 2009

I mean, like any ski, it depends on your style. The nearly symmetrical sidecut is suited for a backcountry jib type of skier...if you do choose to mount them tele, be sure to take it to a shop that understands the intricacies of mounting tele on twin-tip skis (especially ones with nearly symetrical sidecuts). Pin line on chrod center isn't going to work for a twin-tip ski. You can find more info on mounting twin-tips with telemark bindings here: http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6569&highlight=twin+tip+average+centers

Armada ARV Alpine Ski

I've never seen anyone ski these tele, but I'd say go for it (I know a few people who ski them alpine and like them). However, I'd be aware of where you mount because of the twin-tip. Check out this article on mounting tele bindings on twin-tip skis that I found helpful for mounting a pair of Kung Fujas last season. http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=6569&highlight=twin+tip+average+centers

Scott Mission Alpine Ski

183. With a narrower ski it's easier to move edge-to-edge, so if you're on the fence between lengths, I'd always go up. 183 will give you stability at speed and a little extra float in deeper snow, plus room to grow into the longer ski length and improve your skiing.

Line Blend Alpine Ski

August 10, 2009

The 178s should be fine. But honestly, I'd go for the 183s at your height and weight. You're going to exert a lot of force on the skis, and the 183s are going to provide a big, stable platform for you. Additionally, those skis are going to give you room to improve your technique. The 178s would be kind of a dead end for you, if you start to ski faster or start skiing deeper snow, you're quickly going to max out the performance of that length for your size.

Dynastar Big Trouble Limited Alpine Ski

Definitely the 186. It's not so long that you'll lose maneuverability in tight spaces, but long enough that it'll give you the extra float that you want in deeper snow conditions.

Line Anthem Alpine Ski

August 10, 2009

Hey Emily. The "clips" that you refer to are called "bindings". You do need bindings on skis to use them, but if your boyfriend has another pair of bindings on other skis they are most definitely transferable. Just take both pairs of skis to any ski shop and they'll be able to remove the bindings from one pair of skis and mount them on the other.

The S7s have significant tip rocker, which makes the extra length very manageable. The 188 will ski shorter than it measures and you're going to be loving the extra float. If you're on the 176 Got, the 188 should be fine for you...

K2 Hellbent Alpine Ski

June 23, 2009

You absolutely should get the 189. The Obsetheds have a little early rise in the tip, but it's nothing compared to the full rocker of the hellbents. They ski short, and at your height and weight, you could be rocking a 189 traditional camber ski. As for the mount position, I don't know much about that, anyone else?

Backcountry Access Tracker DTS Beacon

June 17, 2009

Depends, they are both very quality beacons. The Pieps works better than the Tracker for multiple burial situations, but the Tracker is extremely easy and intuitive to use. For a first time user, I'd recommend the DTS Tracker based on it's ease of use. Multiple burials are rare, especially if you use proper technique when traveling/skiing in the backcountry.

Karhu Storm BC Telemark Ski

June 16, 2009

Hey man, if I were you I'd go with the G3 El Hombres (http://www.backcountry.com/store/GGG0079/G3-el-Hombre-Alpine-Ski.html). They are light enough to tour, but stiff enough for a guy of your size. They like to go fast, but at your stage of telemarking you probably want a ski that you can grow into, and will improve your skiing. I'm 6'2" and had a pair of the 185s, which were perfect for me. They make a 192, but that's a pretty big ski for tele, even at your size and weight. Another note, if you weigh 230, don't buy Black Diamond O1s. The O1s aren't made for you. Period. I ripped out TWO pairs of O1s last season. I'd definitely buy a pair of 22 Designs Hammerheads which have a 6 screw pattern, making it virtually impossible to rip out.
