Yes, quite comfortable still. I generally have them weighed down with stuff and never notice it, though you might notice without a belt or something to hold them up. There not cargo pockets so there's nothing protruding out on the front.

Chaco Canyonland Mid Trail Shoe - Men's

June 16, 2009

I too have got really wide feet and they're different sizes to boot. However, these shoes have worked out pretty well for comfort and support on my nonexistent arches. The sizing different from the sandals though, I had to go one size up from my sandals. Good luck.

Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's

May 16, 2009

Ok, I'm not sure what constitutes as side pockets, but I'll give it a go. There are 4 hand pockets, 2 on each side (1 on each side has a zipper, the other is open). The open pockets are located where hand pockets in other types of pants are located. The zipper ones are more vertical, on the side of the upper thigh. They're are all really big. These pants are symmetrical, so the pockets in the image above exist on the other side as well. Sorry if this is confusing. There are also 2 butt pockets. And I'm using my own pair as a reference.

Jury's out, but outlook isn't good

Marmot Impulse Jacket - Men's

Marmot Impulse Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 May 14, 2009

So I got this rain jacket on a crazy sale, and was really excited about it. The first few times I used it, it shed water like no one's business, but now it's been only 2 months of non-frequent use (probably less than 10 times max.) and the sleeves and chest soak through within 10 minutes of steady rain. I know I need to re-DWR it, but I feel like it should've lasted a little longer. The jacket itself looks nice (got the stellar blue color) and it's light enough too. But my other quip would be the stiff, fleece collar and fleece wrist cuffs. The collar doesn't really stay down, but that's admittedly a personal preference. The wrist cuff's get wet, and then your wrists get wet and cold. I'm not sure if I'm sending it back yet, but figured I'd share my thoughts.

Mountain Hardwear Torch Jacket - Men's

May 8, 2009

As you might have heard, the Dragon is the updated version of the Torch. But from my personal experience, the Dragon has a much silkier/softer feel than the Torch, and doesn't feel as stiff (possibly due to the silky softness, perhaps?). The Dragon feels a bit thinner than the Torch, but I could be mistaken. The Torch has velcro wrist closures, while the Dragon has an inner cuff with thumb loops instead. There's more information in the question/answer section of the Dragon page.

Tough and Comfortable

Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 25, 2009

So I've only had these pants for a little while, but so far I can't seem to get over how soft and relatively light the fabric is, while seemingly being very durable. The fabric is kind of on the thicker end of nylon canvas (hence durable) so they might get hot in the summer, but then you got the option of going convertible - awesome. The sizing is a smidge big for me, the medium is a bit big but the small would be too tight in the waist and thighs (I'm blessed with tree trunk thick legs, but I'm pretty short at the same time); however, this isn't really MHW fault as much as my genes. I got them on major discount, because anything over $40/$50 is just ridiculous for nylon pants. The moondust color is like a light-medium grey. I'm an admittedly open MHW fanatic, but since they make afforable gear (in comparison with other brands), that's uber durable and uber dope I think it's warranted, but you might want to keep it in mind.

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Jacket - Men's

Let's say I'm 5'6" and 150lb. should I order a medium or large? MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

April 5, 2009

Desert Backpacking....I'm heading up to Chile's San Pedro de Atacama desert and even further north to the altiplano in their winter (July/August) and I was wondering if this canister stove would work for them colder desert nights, especially if I get into higher altitudes? I'm also thinking about the MSR Whisperlite International too. I'd appreciate any help at all. Thanks.

But, as far as the temperature is concerned, would a canister stove, P.R. or anything else, be useful? I've been checking the average temperatures for the area and they're supposed to be between 20s and 30s (F) at night in higher elevated areas. Any thoughts?

Good all-around shoe, but not amazing

Chaco Canyonland Mid Trail Shoe - Men's

Chaco Canyonland Mid Trail Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 30, 2009

I've had mine for about 7-8 months now, and I think they're pretty good. They take a week and some change to break in, but once they do they become pretty flexible and comfortable. The Chaco comfort is there for sure, though I had to go one size up from my chaco sandals. I've taken them day-hiking a couple of times and they're pretty comfortable to walk in and supportive too. The bottom sole isn't as tough as I'd hoped, small chips started happening soon after I used them outside. But overall, they're comfortable, supportive, and solid shoes for the sale price.

Mountain Hardwear Phantom Down Jacket - Men's

March 28, 2009

Sorry to bother y'all again, but..I'm trying to get into winter backpacking, mountaineering, and general cold adventuring and am hunting for an insulated jacket (and probably pants too). I'm looking mainly at the MH Lodown, MH Compressor, and the MH Phantom (due to my almost religious attraction with MHW, I haven't looked outside this brand, but I'm not opposed) and I'm not sure how they compare - if they would all work with proper layering, or only for certain situations/temp ranges? I get cold kind of easily (especially in the hands and feet), but I think I heat up and sweat a bit when I get going - so big temperature fluctuations. Packability isn't the biggest selling point, and I'd be wearing a waterproof/breathable shell over them everytime I head out into the wilderness. Or Hope I'm not irritatin too much, I'm just trying to make my first purchase a good'n. Any help would be awesomely appreciated, and reciprocated with some positive karma waves. Thanks

Tough as nails, but something wet was on the inside.

Mountain Hardwear Exposure II Parka - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Exposure II Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 23, 2009

I haven't yet used this jacket for snowy outings, but I've used it plenty for rainy ones. The jacket has kept me almost bone dry in complete downpour. A few times I have found myself wet on the inside, which could be a result of a couple of things 1) condensation (cold outside/heat inside), or 2) rain getting inside the jacket through the hood. Either way, it holds up most of the time so I'll keep on using it. The jacket itself is LOADED with pockets, I always find new ones when I wear it. The outer material seems like it can hold up to anything, save a buzz saw. It's a great jacket, and definitely beats out shelling more money than I have for a goretex shell. The lack of a star come from its somewhat incompressiblity and lack of breathablity in warmer temps. Good shell for winter, rain, and knife fighting.

Sierra Designs Hurricane LT Parka - Men's DO NOT USE

Sierra Designs Hurricane LT Parka - Men's DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 4 February 22, 2009

This jacket packs down well and will keep the rain off of you, but it doesn't breathe too well even with the pit zips wide open (though at this point it is no longer waterproof. This doesn't make it a bad jacket, especially for the price, but if you're looking for something more breathable another material would be better.

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Zip T - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Zip T - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 22, 2009

Got this a couple of months ago on sale. It's super soft, smooth, and plush, which are great, but with its softness comes delicateness. I'm always a bit worried about screwing up the fur. It's warm as nonsense and is even more wind resistant than I originally expected, but it ain't windproof. I live in mild North Carolina and this pullover is actually too warm for me to wear for most of the "winter," so I ended up very begrudgingly returning it. But if you're looking for a warm fleece this is definitely worth keeping in mind.

Comfy socks, take a while to stink up.

Backcountry.com Merino Trail Sock - 3 Pair

Backcountry.com Merino Trail Sock - 3 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 February 22, 2009

I have some of the nastiest, smelliest feet of anyone I've encountered in life, these socks have been stellar on keeping the stank on the down low. Takes a couple uses to get any smell, and a couple more to get a BAD smell; however, for the sake of others change your socks. This socks are also ridiculous comfortable, these are always the first to go after laundry's done. I use them mainly for running and sports, I don't know if they'd be too great backpacking (haven't tried it yet) but they would work for day hikes and such. For the price, they are doubly, triply, quadruply sweet. If you wash them right, they'll last a while. Go for it.

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Zip T - Long-Sleeve - Men's

February 20, 2009

The exposure plus this bad boy will take you down into some pretty cold temps, especially if you're active. I'd guess low 20s and lower if you're a naturally warm person. It depends on what you're layering underneath the monkey man, but either way the monkey is a furnace. But in warmer weather you might want to try a thinner layer that can still keep you warm (try some icebreaker stuff). I too own the exposure 2 parka in medium, and as for fit, the monkey will definitely fit underneath (I got a medium monkey man pullover). Hope it helps.

Mountain Hardwear Monkey Man Fleece Zip T - Long-Sleeve - Men's

February 20, 2009

Not really. It's newer, but it's the same material and has less pockets (no hand pockets). The pullover is actually warmer than the jacket form, because it has the monkey fur on the inside of the front (up against your belly), while the jacket does not. Thus, if you are cold with your jacket, a switch to the pullover could help. The pullover also has thumb loops, which is nice when layering under something.

Mountain Hardwear G50 Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear G50 Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 6, 2008

I'm 5' 6", 150, and I've got a shorter upper torso and I got a medium . When I first got it I thought it was really short. After wearing it around, however, I've come to see it's cut perfectly, at least for me. As far as performance, the G50 is awing. It's cuts wind like a freakin' ax when I ride around on my bike. The G50 is also CRAZY water-resistant. My only gripes are 1) the lack of elastic/velcro wrist cuffs, 2) the thin fleece lining (admittedly, though, I get cold really easily). This jacket will keep you warm as nonesense if you're moving around, but if not, you better layer up.

The sweetest part of the jacket is it's price. For the performance and quality of a significantly more expensive softshell, but at a significantly LOWER price you'd better holler at the G50 (better yet, look at steep and cheap or bc outlet). The jacket has sent me to the temples of Mountain Hardwearism.

Lastly, backcountry.com is ridiculously sweet ass sweet. If you were a real person, I'd try to marry you.
