XL is HUUUGE--great bag!

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

Rating for this product: 5 February 26, 2009

Let me start by saying that I am a bit biased because I love Timbuk2 products. With that out of the way, I bought the XL in Gray-Dijon-Gray color scheme. The styling is great, as with virtually all Timbuk2 bags. I was somewhat apprehensive about getting the XL, because I didn't know if I'd need one that big, but now I am glad I did. It's difficult to describe just how much capacity this thing has. My 6-year old son can almost fit into it, and I'm pretty sure it would hold his weight as well, the design and construction are that solid. I am also a big fan of organizer pockets in my bag, to old all the little "greeblies" that we carry with us and keep them from rolling around in the bottom of the bag. Without the multi-pocket organizer on this bag, you would be forced to either go arm-deep or virtually dive into this bag to retrieve your lip balm or keys (are you getting that this bag is big yet?). The ballistic nylon material's water resistance is top notch in any situation other than total submersion. One minor drawback is that if you load this monster up, it becomes quite bulk and if you load it up with heavy items you may need a forklift to haul it around. But I have a feeling that this is what Timbuk2 had in mind when they designer her, Chewie. One thing I wish it had was an outside pocket--something I could access quickly for small items without having to open the entire flap. But this is a minor point.

Decent shorts, fit was a bit off

Oakley Ballistic 3.7 MTB Short - Men's

Oakley Ballistic 3.7 MTB Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 26, 2009

I am more or less a novice mountain biker, so bear this in mind here. I liked the idea of the removable chamois that attaches to the outer shorts, but in practice it didn't come off too well. The points of attachment between the chamois and shorts seems precarious at best. I did however like the fit of the chamois shorts, but the outer shorts were a bit too sloppy big on me. I had to use the inner elastic adjustment straps and tighten them all the way down, and then the fit got even more weird with most of the shorts still being too loose and the very top of the waistband being too tight. Fit issues aside, the features and construction of the shorts were nice. Side cargo pockets were nice, and so were the zip-vents. The fly was kind of cool too, in that it was a neoprene stretch type with no zipper. I ultimately returned these, but if I hadn't had the issues with fit, I might have kept them. They were a good buy as purchased from SaC, but I don't think they're worth full price.

Best laptop messenger ever. Period.

Timbuk2 Commute Messenger Bag

Timbuk2 Commute Messenger Bag

Rating for this product: 5 February 26, 2009

Let me start by saying that I am somewhat biased because I love Timbuk2 products. That said, this is my favorite. I had been looking for a messenger-style laptop bag to fit my needs for some time, and had owned ones by Jansport and Crumpler. I waited for a long time for this version of the Commute to debut, and it did not disappoint. There is literally a litany of features. I have the size L and it provides ample space for my day-to-day gear. In the main compartment I typically have several folders and a few books, my iGo laptop power supply and my travel mouse in its case, plus my lunch. Organizer pockets are a must for me, and this version of the Commute exceeded my expectations. Pockets big and small, and all contained inside the main bag in case something falls out. The external laptop access is genius when traveling thru airport security, and you can even slip a thin folder or some papers back there with the laptop. Overall, even fully loaded, it is a very manageable size as well. Only 2 drawbacks for me. I wish there was at least one zippered external pocket for small items, so I wouldn't have to open the entire flap. I also think the laptop fit is a bit tight. This Commute size L is supposed to fit up to 17" laptops, but I have a 15.4" lenovo T60p w/ extended battery and it is a SNUG fit widthwise (lengthwise there is extra room). I don't know if this was designed for one of those ultra-slim 17" laptops or what, but I don't see how a 17" would fit in there. Still, I am extremely happy with this bag.

A decent shirt for the price

Oakley Ridgeline Mountain Bike Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Oakley Ridgeline Mountain Bike Jersey - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 February 24, 2009

I like the feel of this jersey. The fabric was soft and breathable, and the zipper felt sold. I was not as sold on the fit. I have relatively broad shoulders for my size, and it just fit me...oddly. It felt extra baggy and a bit sloppy, especially in the sleeves. When zipping down a trail, I thought it might get hung up on a branch or three. In all, a decent jersey for the Steep and Cheap price, but ultimately I decided to return it.
