CamelBak Hydrolink Filter Adapter Kit

CamelBak Hydrolink Filter Adapter Kit

Rating for this product: 4 June 11, 2009

In general this is a good idea - this version is a little bulky (long) though and camelback makes a few others designed so the bite valve fits more snugly on one of the male ends. Many folks like the shut-off valve to avoid leaks - personally I always use a bite valve cover & never get any leaks so the shut off valve is superfluous for me. I actually made a version of this with commercial valve with auto shut-off features. This actually makes more sense to me (and is smaller). Overall a good but slightly too bulky product. (it is compatible with other brands and is the standard industry quick-connect size.

The issue with all these designs is that its a little difficult to know that you have fully filled your hydration sack while its still in the pack... no good solution seems to exist

Platypus Hyperflow Bite Valve

June 11, 2009

I have swapped these onto many different types of hoses - it works with all I have tried - outdoor products, camelbak for sure. The connection size seems to be the same as on the camelbak big bite valve and both are very stretchy (without affecting the bite valve seal).

The hoses from different manufactures are not exactly the same size - but are close - the materials vary, the inside & outside diameters vary (seperately). However they all seem close enough that most items are interchangeable between brands. I use Camelbak 90degree flow valves on Platypus hoses with platypus ergo angles & camelbak big bite valves. The only issues are with some of the Quick connects on the barb side - (quick connect sides are interchangeable) the camelbak ones are too small to be a really tight fit for the outdoor products and some Playpus hoses (kind of fits...). However you can use a 1/2" PVC tube to boost it up to a tight fit. I use generic quick fit fittings instead with a 3/8" barb - these work well on all types.

BTW I always carry an nylon inline 3/8" dual barb adapter - quick cheap repair in case of hose damage (Ace hardware...). As a Scoutmaster I also always carry a spare bite valve - one of the blighters invariably chews on his so much that it starts to leak continuously... These are the ones I carry as (very good) generic replacements...

Finally a real cover from Platypus!

Platypus Bite Valve Cover

Platypus Bite Valve Cover

Rating for this product: 4 June 11, 2009

I love the Platypus Hyperflow valve - but switched to a Camelbak Big Bite valve (almost as good) only because it had much more effective cover...

Well things have changed - the new cover brings Playtpus up to par. I still prefer the Camelbak valve cover slightly - its smaller (so's the bite valve) and seems to stay on just slightly better under abuse...

However the platypus seals very well (in all normal use) and also has a little hole which you can use to hook it to your pack strap.

So now I'm using the hyperflow bite valve with this new cover. Note that Platypus sells this as a duo pack with a new insulated hose cover (improved materials)...

Jetboil Helios Cooking System

May 16, 2008

Does the helios burner also work with the existing PCS & GCS pots - is the fluxring size the same? I like the cold weather performance & better stability - but would also like the flexibility to use the smaller pots for overnights and single cooking. e.g. I have been using the GCS pot with a white gas stove for exactly these reasons...
