Kelty Trail Dome Tent 6-Person 3-Season

September 14, 2009

i don't own this tent personally, but yes, it will come with stakes. bare minimum, it should include the exact amount needed to stake down the tent body and rainfly. i've never purchased a kelty tent, but they may include 1-2 more for extras or for guying out the fly as well.

great locker

Black Diamond Rocklock Carabiner

Black Diamond Rocklock Carabiner

Rating for this product: 4 September 14, 2009

Great biner if you are looking for a Big ole locker. it is a tad on the heavy side, but very burly and durable. i had one clipped to the back of my harness during a 130 ft squeeze chimney. aside from some scratches, it looked good as new!

smooth clipping and ultralight

Wild Country Xenon Lite Quickdraw

Wild Country Xenon Lite Quickdraw

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

love these draws and biners. the gate has a really great action too it and these are super light in the hand. the size is on the small side, but still easily clipped. the biners themselves are great for racking cams too. all in all I highly recommend WC biners. for the price and quality these xenon lite draws can't be beat so long as you don't mind the reduced size. if you are looking for a full size biner, go with the nitro. if you are looking for a creme de la creme draw, go with the heliums.

Black Diamond Camalot C4 Package #0.5 - 3

Rating for this product: 5 September 14, 2009

The trigger action is oh so smooth
The cam range is oh so wide
The colored lobes are oh so sexy
The protection is oh so reassuring when you are pumped out 10 ft above your last piece
Hail to thee, black diamond camalot!

Pair these with a lightweight biner (i love the WC xenon lites for racking my cams) and you are ready to get addicted to CRACK...climbing.

awesome stove with a fitting name

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2009

i love my pocket rocket! probably not the best for gourmet cooking, but when it comes to quickly boiling water and packing down to an incredibly small/lightweight size, there's nothing better. Crank it up full blast and it really does sound like a rocket--i've not used any other canister stoves so i can't really compare the volume, but it doesn't really bother me.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel Bag - 250 - 9070cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2009

this duffel is the way to go--super durable construction, nearly waterproof, lightweight, utterly cavernous. if you are looking for a bottomless hole of a duffel to swallow all the gear and clothing you can throw in it, look no further. i ordered the Large and it works perfectly for me.Oh and i ordered the oxidant orange--the color looks much cooler in real life than it does in the pic above.

Kelty Grand Mesa 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

July 31, 2009

it's always a good idea to get a footprint. you don't NEED it, but think of it as a cheap insurance plan for the life of your tent. it really increases the durability of the tent floor and only adds a little weight to the setup.

Black Diamond Camalot C4's

July 21, 2009

i'm in the process of building my trad rack and am about to order a set of BD camalots (#0.5-3). after that my young rack will consist of the cam set, a set of BD nuts, set of BD hexes, and an additional #1 and 2x #2 camalots. my question is, if i were to buy one additional cam to supplement my set, which size should i get? i was thinking either #0.3 or #5, but am not sure which will really be more useful. if it helps, a majority of my climbing is done on sandstone in the Red River Gorge, KY.

GSI Outdoor Stacking Cutlery Set

these are great for the price. they don't stay together all that well (hence the four stars) but are lightweight, easy to clean, and perform their job of transporting the food in my bowl to my mouth very well.

Black Diamond VaporLock Screwgate Carabiner

Black Diamond VaporLock Screwgate Carabiner

Rating for this product: 5 June 11, 2009

great little locking biners. super light weight, smooth action, and not big and bulky like most belay/rappel lockers. i use these guys with a set of dynex runners as indirects when cleaning and climbing multi-pitch routes. the keylock really comes in handy when you trying to unclip from the chains.

Osprey Packs Talon 33 Backpack - 1900-2000cu in

Rating for this product: 5 May 8, 2009

this pack is awesome! I've mainly been using it for climbing and i love it. lots of gear loops to clip stuff to and super light. I can fit my shoes, small rack, chalk, chalk bag, extra layer, food, two nalgenes, first aid kit, and tarp in the bag with tons of room to spare. The cinch strap under the hood is perfect for carrying a 60m rope. It's been great for hiking too. If you pack light this is definitely large enough for an over-nighter as well.

Kelty Locus 40 Backpack - 2500cu in

Rating for this product: 5 April 16, 2009

Great weekend pack. holds everything i need for three days of climbing and camping. So far this pack has withstood two very wet weekends at the red without a problem (with a rain cover--an absolute lifesaver). The compression straps and floating lid are great for securing odd sized gear. Durable, lightweight, and functional.

Black Diamond QuickWire Quickpack Quickdraws

Black Diamond QuickWire Quickpack Quickdraws

Rating for this product: 5 April 2, 2009

i've only been climbing for about four months, so this is the first set of quickdraws i've purchased. However, i have used a couple other brands so i have a little bit to compare them to. I really like them! The 'biners and dynex dogbones are both pretty lightweight. The wiregates is are awesome--clipping is almost effortless. they look pretty cool too. i definitely recommend these draws.

Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil Stuff Sack

Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil Stuff Sack

Rating for this product: 4 April 2, 2009

nothing spectacular, but they do their job well. they can fold to an incredibly small size when not in use. i'm only giving them four stars because the stuff sacks (XS and L) had a cinch chord top rather than the roll top i had wanted.

sweet sleeping bag

Mountain Hardwear Ultralamina 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Synthetic

Mountain Hardwear Ultralamina 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 5 April 2, 2009

Great bag--lightweight, compresses extremely well, comfortable, and definitely warm. My first outing with my ultralamina 15 was a few weeks ago at the Red River Gorge in KY. When we arrived at 3 am it was flurring hard with about two inches of snow on the ground. Once we set up the tent and i got in the bag, it easily kept me warm in ~20 F conditions--i didn't even zip up the second two nights (it warmed up a little bit later in the weekend to ~35 F at night). This sleeping bag gets the job done.

Also, it comes with both a large mesh stuff sack AND a compression sack. Very cool of MH to include both.

Great Harness

Arc'teryx R320 Rock Climbing Harness - Men's

Arc'teryx R320 Rock Climbing Harness - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2009

The R320 is super comfortable and lightweight. It is hardly noticeable when worn and distributes the rope forces very nicely without all a bunch of padding just as it says in the description. The gear loops are solid and hold more than enough draws. It is seems quite durable as well, holding up to wet conditions and general wear nicely. It performed wonderfully on my first super soggy, muddy, and wet trip to the Red and looks like it will be protecting me for many more trips to come.
