Lafuma Warm'n Light 600 Sleeping Bag: 40 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 4 May 2, 2012

Ok, I know I just got it in the mail yesterday, but I'm wicked excited to use it. It's packs super small and is only 1 lb 6oz, comes with a compression sack and storage bag. and although I haven't used it in a practical sense yet, I got in it last night when it was around 45ish, and I was pretty toasty. just had my thin cotton work clothes on too. I'm a hot sleeper, so I should be fine in it and can't wait to use it on the trail this summer. Got it off sportchalet.com for $90!

Sierra Designs Hyperlight Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Sierra Designs Hyperlight Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 4 April 20, 2012

Light, good size inside, 3 people is stretching it, but it can fit everyone inside in a pinch, without the gear obviously. I've had it for 3 years now, used in complete downpour, 30+ winds. It's a great tent, 5lbs a 2-3 person tent is pretty nice, Doesn't come with a footprint however, and sierra designs doesn't make one anymore, so will have to make one out of a nylon tarp and some gussets, but should be fine.
No issues with it what so ever. I'm going to waterproof it this year, the DWR has diminished a little, but still wont let water in. Love the two doors

Breath!

Teva Raith eVent Hiking Shoe - Men's

Teva Raith eVent Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 9, 2012

My review is based on the difference between the mid raiths and my old pair of mid ll beans. While the old LLs were waterproof, they were full leather and didn't breath. These raiths breath like a pair of lungs. I have hot feet and can normally hike in 3 season boots in the winter, which also mean they sweat profusely. I hiked two high peaks in the ADK in the spring in these. Adk mud, ice and snow, and my feet were dry as a bone. They breath great and are completely waterproof. I have a pair of mountaineering boots with eVent and breath the same way.
After reviewing the comments on the some keens and the merrel moabs, I went with these because they seemed to offer more support on the sole. Other boots soles seemed to soft for me and might not be as comfortable on longer hikes.
Looking forward to trying these out on a 28 mile hike coming up. Hopefully, my review will stay the same and I'll continue to love these!

Mountain Hardwear Hunker Down Bootie

Mountain Hardwear Hunker Down Bootie

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2012

I bought these with the intention for camp show use. So far so good, Just sitting around camp in less than 20 degree weather and my feet were extremely warm and comfortable.
Over time a couple feathers had come out, but no rips yet, and fit small for me so I had to get the XL. but the only qualm I have have to deal with is because how I use them, which is cold weather camping and not casual. The sole is thin, if you're standing on ice for some time, you will start to feel the cold. If you're walking around or sitting, my feet stayed pretty toasty.

Overall, great buy off SAC!

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Men's

Stoic Tour Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2011

Picked up a pair off SAC after reading the reviews. The only size they had was the XL when I normally wear L (38" waist) Thinking I would just return them if too big, had no idea how the sizing was as this was my first stoic pant. I gotta say though, after trying them on, I was surprised they fit almost perfectly. The L would not fit what soever. So yes, the sizing may be off a bit but I am happy with them.

Not sure what this ergo fit is really, but the flexibility of these pants is amazing, didn't run up the crotch or pull up off the ankle like many of my snow pants do. I'm not sold on no zippers on the front pockets, but the cargo pocket should fit the things I usually carry in there.

Can't wait to try these out in the field, northern NY is getting snow today (10/27), although it'll be gone tomorrow. If these pants work through the season I'll def be giving them 5 stars

Update: I've been wearing them constantly whilst alpine skiing, this past weekend I even wore them hiking and they performed admirably. Again, the flexibility of these pants is great, water resistant and light insulation, so when hiking in sub freezing temps, you are not sweating when moving, and not freezing when stopped.

Stoic Bombshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 27, 2011

After searching for a new jacket, a BC rep led me to the bombshell. My first impression, as like many others was the seemingly soft stretchy fabric which looked like I could catch a limb and rip it easily. But pay no mind, this fabric is strong, waterproof, windproof and breathable. I love it cause just on warmer days and wearing no layers, the fabric is very comfortable yet protects. I got an XXL as I'm on the cusp of being a tad larger than an XL. the sizing for me is perfect with use of layers. The main reason I got this was all the features on the shell which I have wanted and needed for years. wrist gaiters, pit zips, removable powder skirt and a high neck. Seriously, for the amount of shell you get for the money you pay is an unbelievable purchase. I think the only difference I have between this years and last years model is the recco reflector and the mesh in the underarm vents, which would be sweet to have, (but I digress)

After a full season of use, my subjective review was outstanding for this jacket. A few things to note; there was some minor pilling near the wrist pocket, the brim is not very stiff and if you're skiing east coast, you eventually will be skiing in the rain and a sloppy brim is just annoying for me.(non helmet wearer) Also, the wrist gaiters has this very dense material that pulls into your skin around your thumb after a couple hours of use, makes the hands a little sore. (kinda wish the brim was made from this material)

My collection of stoic products is growing exponentially.I got the deep tahoe which is great, not as electrifying colorful like some other stoic products

and...and the jacket is proven while using a homemade zipline...

perfect for weekend trip

Necky Manitou 13 Kayak

Rating for this product: 4 August 8, 2011

Borrowed a friends necky manitou 13 this past weekend, and I must say it was a joy to run. large back compartment for gear and plenty of storage on the bungies up front. the seat was adjustable two ways and good padding.
As a 13 I think a front compartment would have been ideal as there was plenty of room for a front bulkhead with my feet there, also as I stuff all my gear in the back I am def stern heavy and a little unstable as the bow sticks more in the air, had to wrap some more gear up front to balance out.
overall though, a good ride, for one or two nights.

Wilderness Systems Tsunami 120 Touring Kayak

Wilderness Systems Tsunami 120 Touring Kayak

Rating for this product: 5 August 8, 2011

Went shopping for kayaks a couple weeks ago and ended up with he tsunami 120. It is a perfect fit for the gf, she does mostly flatwater trips but do come across some small class 1 rapids, (shes not a fan of higher) but the kayak could def handle up to, but no more than class III. The boat tracks great, yet can steer with ease in creeks/ rivers. Lots of room, but if you are taller than 6' than be sure to try out the 125, it's a bit wider and is has a more forgiving height for the larger folk like my self.
I've tried a few other mfg seats, but the WS seats are the most comfortable I've come across, great padding and lots of different ways to adjust.

I finally found the pair for me

The North Face Paramount Peak Convertible Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 3, 2011

I really like the concept for convertible pants, and having owned a couple pairs I've always found the ones that rub the zippers on my knees when I have the bottoms off. This is not the case is these pants, I'm taller 6'2" but have shorter legs and most L/XL would just rub against my knees or the sides (where ever the zipper head was) These fit me so they are just above my knee and allows no rubbing when I'm hiking.
Not only that they are very nice to wear on hot days and the material is light but strong as well. The zipper heads are on the legs and are color coded for each leg! genius! the extra zippered pocket is awesome, and the belt that comes with just sum up these BA pants

As Evan said, it isn't the most flashiest device, doesn't have touch screen, doesn't have a super VGA resolution. However, it's water resistant, sturdy, picks up the gps signal quickly, color display with a joystick pointer, has tons of options to help you track your way, is just a solid piece of equipment and part of my gear for the last 4 years, and have no reason why I need something new.

Hestra Army Leather Gore-Tex XCR Glove

June 16, 2011

I own a pair of the non gore tex hestras.I ski an average of 30X a year. Plus I tour which leaves me more in the open and less time to stop in one place and warm up. To put in perspective, I got the gloves I did because from the reviews I read they were extremely warm gloves and very high wind resistance. After using them for a season the only time they weren't toasty was when the temps dropped (without wind chill)to about -10F, I was high on a mountain with 40 mph winds. The wind did not get through the gloves, just the cold temps, and on the same note, they weren't cold, just not hot as normal.
I firmly believe that is you go to the higher grade army gloves, you will be completely protected as far as wind coverage, I know the liners are extremely warm as they are comparable to the non gore tex.

Backcountry.com Nebraska Softshell Hat

Rating for this product: 5 June 16, 2011

Fits and looks great. Have the L/XL, the brim isn't too big (for my melon) And the fact that its soft shell just makes it cooler. I can now wear a hat on trips in which I won't soak the hat through the cotton and make it stink. I don't know the difference between flex fit and this hat apparently. It has an elastic fit on it. Isn't that what flex fit is?

ALPS Mountaineering Compression Sack

May 13, 2011

you don't need the compression sacs if you're using these. I would say use the large to be on the safe side for the long 0 degree. Even if you have a little extra room, you synch down the bag and would be pretty much the same size of a medium. If you packing the poles with your tent, measure the length of the poles and get the sac accordingly. They sacs are all pretty wide so most tents should fit in them dependant on length

Thule Saab/Toyota Specialty Foot Pack

Rating for this product: 5 May 9, 2011

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is the universal thule footpack 369.
My girlfriend has a 98 corolla. I have read many reviews that say it is not compatible, This footpack fits perfectly. the corolla gutter system has 3 rubber gaskets, the foot pack goes over 2 of them and under the outer most gasket. There are no leaks and doesn't even jam the door up. Keeps the bars stable and secure with at least 2 bikes on it.

waterproof, comfortable, odd fit, no front pocets

Stoic Vaporshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 5, 2011

I got it in yesterdady, It was pouring out so I ripped open the package and ran outside. Of course, the limitation of the jacet was not tested but preliminary opinions were this:
The jacket seems to be a little off sized for me, usually XLs fit me great, it was extremely tight in the shoulders, not the chest, which is odd (picture). I called BC and they said XXL will be available in mid may.
Also, I don't think the non front pockets will do it for me, but it might be something to get used to. Even though I know slightly opened front pockets in rain can soak your pockets and core dependant on the liner. I just know I won't be using this jacket just for hiking.
Other than that, the jacket out of the package seemed like a stiff hardshell. When put on, its actually really comfortable, the material moves quite well with your body.
Also, the hood has those foam cord holds, I have a bombshell and skeptical about them then, bu afer using it for a season, I'm a believer, they don't hold th strings at absolute, but only if you get snagged on something it pulls out, lowering the chancs of ripping
Im returning it for a XXL, and the arm length worries me a bit, the length is perfect now...

Basically I'm giving this jacket 4 stars instead of 5, (subjectively) for an odd fit and lack of pockets. Heading to maine at the end of the month to do some real testing so see how the jacket works in real life. Still n awesome looking jacket, seems to be bar none waterproofing, high neck, huge hood, and nifty new velco for the wrists.

Updated: Just got the XXL in. Threw it on and it fits great. Not as tight in the shoulders as before. and the size difference btw a XL and a XXL is surprisingly not that much different in the arms and the back which I was happy about. Still have to try out it on the trails. Until then, the 4 stars will remain until I'm comfortable with the lack of hand pockets.
cheers

SOG Knives Sogfari Machete

Rating for this product: 1 May 2, 2011

Eh, lightweight and works good on brush, primarily pricker bushes for me. However, if you hit anything, the metal is very brittle and will break off instead of bend. If you're careful, it can last while I'm sure, but it's a machete.....

Update:
Only used this once a year for two year to cut down brush and such, recently hacking some tree growth, 1" limbs, the thing snapped in 3 pieces and I narrowly missed being sliced open as it hit my face and chest. What a flimsy piece of crap! dangerous and should be taken off the market

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Black Diamond Ascension Nylon STS Skins

Rating for this product: 4 February 11, 2011

With a little practice they are easy to put on and take off. I was pleasantly surprised how much they grab up a steep embankment. But with such grabbing force, they do not glide what so ever. So if you are using them on a soft sloping hill, you will be going slower than XC skis, or snowshoes. My time using them is limited, but some ice did build up, and sometimes snow gets underneath the adhesive, but I did not notice any difference in climbing strength.

So I love BC and the customer service, and I don't want to bad mouth them, but when I ordered these skins, they sent me already cut, used skins! I called them up and they immediately apologized and gave me a refund, couldn't order new ones from them since I had a trip planned and needed to cut new ones, and had to buy them locally. I was peeved at the time, but It's unfortunate and I know it happens, but I got my refund extremely fast, so in the end it worked out

Super warm, not super duper warm

Hestra Heli Glove

Hestra Heli Glove

Rating for this product: 4 January 25, 2011

Just got a pair, out of the box they look like a wicked pair of gloves. soft and thick goat leather on the palm and good quality construction. I got the grey. Long gauntlet and nice tie in straps. I used them on a touring trip up Whiteface mountain this past Saturday. Going up, the liners were too warm and had to remove them. At the top temps dropped to -5 and the wind picked up. Undoubtedly, my fingers got mad cold after I took them off to help the gf while strapping her pack up. At those temps with the amount of time my hands were exposed, I was pleasantly surprised my hands warmed up as fast as they did. Still took a few minutes of course, but in all honesty, with my hands being that stiff and numb, the gloves def did the trick on the way down.also have to mention while I was wearing the shells I had gotten some condensation inside. So these wet shells, dry liners got my hands toasty after just a few minutes.
Just to note, the palms do need that waterproof balm right out of the box, they did soak up some water I noticed, but, didn't feel the wetness when wearing just the shells. Also, even thought the liners are warm, they are a tad bulky.
I definitely would recommend to a friend

Dynafit TLT Speed Binding

January 19, 2011

I just am getting into AT skiing. I purchased the TLT speed used, some scarpa terminator Xs and mounted them. From what I can tell I mounted them correctly, with the exception of when I'm skinning in touring mode (piece up), if I rotate my heel, and there is resistance, I will pop out of the toe. It doesn't happen all the time, and I try to keep my boots straight, but if I have to turn or lean I risk the pop out.
I'm pretty sure there isn't a way to adjust the toes, is there something else that I am doing incorrectly? They are in good condition, but maybe the springs aren't as strong?
cheers!

I didn't want to get any insulation cause I thought I didn't need it. But,I started winter camping however and needed a little more insulation of course. And even though my foam pad haydays are over, totally glad I found the pro, very comfortable, very warm and relatively lightweight, but not as light as a foam pad. :)

Good 0 deg bag

The North Face Elkhorn Bx Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Heatshield

Rating for this product: 4 March 10, 2010

Good bag, The thing I like most about it, besides being true to its temperature rating, is how easily the zipper works. Very heavy and doesn't get caught up, leaving me with getting in and out a breeze. The only thing I don't like is the fact that the draft collar synch cords. They are a pain to tighten up when your in the bag. But when I get everything situated, im toasty even without exra layers, (I'm a furnace anyway)
Other than that its great, especially when pairing it with my prolite plus pad, dont need anything else, also, dependant on the current conditions, I haven't had condensation build up on the outside of the bag.

Rating for this product: 4 February 19, 2010

Have the 30" shoe. Workes effortlessly with a pack on. The aggressive crampon did not let me down even traversing through some questionable bowls. Very natural walking movement with little snow kick.
However the release on the binding leaves less to be desired. The clips to release the straps are relatively small and difficult to pull when wearing thicker gloves. Caused frusteration the first few times, and its gotten better with practice, but recently I did a 15 mile hike and could barely get them off(mainly due to exhaustion)

Awesome jacket, hands down. Simple, so I'll just include the pros and cons
pros - gore tex, totally waterproof, no shoulder seams. dual adjusting hood. large inside pockets. very rigid brim. awesome SAC deal.
cons - low front pockets,
subjective - I ordered a XL as I do for everything. But I should have ordered a XXL, very tight fitting with a mid layer.

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

The North Face Classic Denali Fleece Jacket - Men's

I got this jacket for xmas, almost right after taking a trip to NYC and seeing everyone and their mother wearing TNF apparel. That being said, I would have never bought this jacket thinking everyone wore it just because..everyone else wore it. It's a great looking jacket and I thought it was just for style. But, like I said, I got it as a xmas gift from my girfriend, so i had to wear it for a little while. It is a nice jacket and replaces an older jacket I wear to work that needed to be not worn in an office environment. It worked great, it kept me warm in upstate NY, and only moderate to strong winds penetrated it.I kinda was thinking of returning it because I wanted a REAL mid layer jacket, not a half zip. But before that, I had a trip up marcy planned, I had brought another mid and wore my denali in the car to the trailhead, and at the last minute I decided to give the denali a shot knowing that it would be sunny during the trip. I tell you, this jacket performed awesome! As body temps rose, and they did as we showshoed up, the pit zip are easily opened and I was not uncomfortable the whole time. When the peak hit, I threw on my shell and stayed perfectly warm in 50 mph winds. It worked perfectly as intended; a synthetic fleece mid layer. I can't wait to try it out again in the backcountry, until then, I can look good in it at work...since no one here wears one :)

Mountain Hardwear Pavo Visor Beanie

Mountain Hardwear Pavo Visor Beanie

it's subjective but, people with large heads won't like this beanie too much. I love MH gear, and it's hard enough for me to find a beanie that actually fits my noggin, so me thinking of ordering the large pavo is just silly without trying it on. But.. my nephew loves it!
