A good light alternative with some minor drawbacks

Scarpa Spirit 3 Alpine Touring Ski Boot

Scarpa Spirit 3 Alpine Touring Ski Boot

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2011

I've been using these boots for one season now. What I like about them: They are relatively light, flex nicely for skinning, are Dynafit compatible, bright in color (in case of avalanche), and offer a good amount of warmth for anything above 10 deg C. Things I am not too keen on: For my preference, they are a little too flexy. They tend to slip slightly on the heel when going up hill. Would I buy them again? Touring boots have come a long ways in the last couple years and I think I would try something new that is more rigid and better able to keep my heel in place like the Black Diamond Boa system.

Great Piece

Patagonia R1 Hooded Fleece Pullover - Men's

Patagonia R1 Hooded Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 13, 2011

One of the most well thought out fleeces for technical use. Excellent wicking capability. The hood is great for keeping you warm as it fits suggly to your noggin and the zipper is asymmetrical so you don't feel it on your chin. The fleece is long enough so you can tuck it under your pants and not have a gap even when you have your hands above your head. Just know that this fits pretty tight. If you are looking for something loose, size up. No complaints from me. Thanks Patagonia.

Optimal Touring Glove

Black Diamond Kingpin Glove

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2011

I've used these gloves over 30 days this year. In that time they have served me well. For me they are good for anywhere between 20-40 degrees. Any warmer and they come off. Any colder and they don't seem to cut it. If you are able to dry them out every night they will keep you dry every day. I have noticed that they've stretched out quite a bit and if I buy another pair will size down to accomodate for the stretching. Otherwise great glove.

Norrøna /29 Warm1 Fleece Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 12, 2011

Great fleece for lounging around. As the /29 line states, these are not made to be technical. That being said, this fleece still has great features. Full zip hood, great colors, thumb loops, zip pockets. . .yeah slightly overpriced though.

Go to Backcountry touring pants

Norrøna Svalbard Flex1 Softshell Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 12, 2011

I have used these over 25 times touring in the Wasatch backcountry. I have been very pleased with how they have held up. They are perfect for touring for many reasons. First, The stretchy bottom will fit tightly around the boots. They do have an annoying hook at the front for hooking onto laces. I plan on cutting this off. Their water repellancy is excellent and can withstand the worst. I got wet only once while skiing and this was in 4 hours of rain downpour. The inside fabric feels good on the skin and is not scratchy. The material as a whole stretches well with movement and the velcro adjustments at the waist are perfect and remove the need for a belt if you size right. I have the small with a waist of 29 inches and they fit right in the middle of the velcro. There are two knee pockets in addition to the waist pockets. I feel that the knee pockets could be taken away next time as I rarely put stuff near the knee. Otherwise, great product at an excellent price.

Great For those cold sitting around days

Norrøna Lyngen Down Jacket - Men's

Norrøna Lyngen Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 12, 2011

I bought this about 3 months ago. I wear this thing out anytime I know I will be standing around in under 20 degree weather. Features I like: elastic bands on cuffs so you don't have to mess with velcro. DWR coating. Side primaloft for enhanced breathability. Adjustable Hood. One thing I don't like: Visor of hood is not nice and malleable like Arcteryx. Instead the front has a wire in it which you have to bend every time to get a nice curvature. I'm afraid the wire will poke through the fabric after awhile.

Patagonia Long Haul Runners Short - Men's

Patagonia Long Haul Runners Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 April 12, 2010

Some good things about it.
1. The fabric is awesome, light, great color, water repelling.

Some bad.
1. They are a lot shorter than the picture looks.
2. The leg openings are such that they slightly restrict the movement of my legs when running.

The bomb

Mountain Hardwear Refueler Short - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Refueler Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 April 12, 2010

I just bought these shorts in the titanium. Previous to this short I bought the Patagonia long haul runners. The refuelers are far and away better.
1. They allow for wider range of motion like in running
2. They are very light with a cool slight plaid print.

One thing to note is there are no side pockets but only the small back pocket.

On this note, the front tie is very short and there isn't very much string to make the shorts tight. I guess its ok since the one pocket is so small it wouldn't be enough to weigh down the shorts pulling them off when full.

While they are a little pricey, you get what you pay for. The sole is great for durability and providing grip. I don't use these very often but they have still held up very well. Quite aggressive so don't think you can walk very far in them.

Rating for this product: 4 January 24, 2010

I have had this shirt for about a year now and it is one of my go to's for either hitting the gym or going out in the sweltering hot sun. Although I like the MH belay shirt a little better for being more stretchy and feeling better to the touch, this T seems to have better wicking quality.

Smith Rosewood Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 5 December 6, 2009

I've had these sunglasses for over 3 years now and have worn them for half of those days. I have a small face and small nose bridge and these fit great. I've smashed them flat and bent them back into shape, lost nose pieces and Smith will gladly send you replacements for free. They have excellent customer service. The only thing I can find wrong with these is that the plastic from the ear pieces is hard enough to wear a noticeable line into the inside of the lenses when the arms are closed. They are also excellent for touring as the lenses sit far enough away from your face to increase breathability and decrease fogging.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 12, 2009

This is my first Gamma MX and did a lot of researching before I made the investment. Everything I've noticed about this jacket is well thought out. Soft fuzz by the neck and chin for comfort, adjustable hood with small visor, very stretchy fabric while still holds up to abrasion. I have not experimented with it yet in heavy rain although drops tend to bead. Very wind resistant and light. I bought this for mild cold conditions to pair with the Beta SL in case of a downpour.

Keeps me Dry

Arc'teryx Beta SL Jacket - Men's DO NOT USE

Rating for this product: 5 November 12, 2009

I have the older version of the Beta SL which has a chest pocket and two giant pit zips. Don't know why they changes to 2 pockets. Anyways I have used this jacket on many a downpour in Scotland and Japan and it has kept at least my top half completely dry. It breaths well so doesn't make u sweaty inside feeling like you are getting wet. The hood is key. Not many hoods with this much adjustability to fit your head just right. This is important if your biking or in the wind a lot with rain. A well thought out jacket. Also I wear a backpack with it a lot and absolutely no pilling. Colors are also a plus. Very vibrant even in low light conditions

Patagonia Merino 2 Crew - Men's

Patagonia Merino 2 Crew - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 12, 2009

I just started wearing this again for the cool season. This shirt can hold back a lot of BO and has the ability to keep you suprisingly warm for how well it breaths and how thin it is. Only downside is it is so thin that it tends to pill on the back if you have a jacket over it with a backpack. Haven't noticed this to be much of a problem however since I got the black and you can hardly see it

Katadyn Hiker Water Microfilter

Katadyn Hiker Water Microfilter

Rating for this product: 5 November 12, 2009

Just thought I'd add to the plethora of reviews about how this filter is pretty much fool proof. I have had it for about 3-4 years and use it a couple times a year. It seems to stay wet on the inside even when I try to take out the filter and dry it. Fills a nalgene in about 1 minute and has the attachment for both nalgen and camelbak. The plastic bag which holds the clean tube broke at the clasp but got a ziploc and good as new!

Black Diamond Demon Backpack - 1831-1953cu in - 2009

Rating for this product: 5 August 17, 2009

This is a great pack for many reasons. I bought it because it is very light yet also has a stiff back to keep structure to you and the bag. Also it has a nice opening where you can swing it around and open it away from you instead of towards you. It is very minimalist as it has 3 small pockets, the main compartment, camelbak pocket and 2 compressor chords on each side.

MontBell U.L. Super Stretch Hugger #4 Sleeping Bag: 35 Degree Down

MontBell U.L. Super Stretch Hugger #4 Sleeping Bag: 35 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 July 10, 2009

I have taken this bag on outings several times now. After owning montbells down jackets I can say that their shell nylon material seems fragile but in fact provides enough protection while weighing almost nothing. This sleeping bag takes up almost no weight or size. However I do disagree with the temperature rating and think it should be moved up 10 degrees (wearing thermals) I had to wear down pants also at 35 degrees. I plan on getting another of their bags soon. I also like the draw chord near the feet which allows one to either quarter off the feet or make the bag shorter to save dead space for heat.

I have probably had 4 different kinds of the mountain house meals. I think this one is the best. It has just has much protein as the others and also has the most vegetables in it by far. The sauce tastes a little cheesy too. Just make sure you have a big water bottle to follow this as it has tons of sodium. Again get the 2 servings for one person.

SealLine Storm Sack Dry Bags ***DO NOT USE***

Rating for this product: 4 July 7, 2009

I recently went on a camping trip and bought one of the black canyon bags and one of the storm sack dry bags both of which are from Sealline. The description for both of these items is poor so heres a better one before you get either: The black canyon sac is much more durable and heavy duty. More made for water trips or if you want something that can withstand a lot of abuse. However it is relatively much more heavy and less compact compared to the Storm. The Storm on the other hand is perfect for backpacking use as a food sac to hang or to keep clothes dry. Unlike the Black Canyon, the outer layer is made of a tight weave fabric. This is nice however I noticed that if sap gets on it it is difficult to get out. In the end I kept one of each so I could have both durability (Black Canyon) and lightness (Storm).

I have used this stove about a dozen times now. I've never had problems with it. It is one of the most reliable things in my pack. It is very durable as I can just shove it anywhere in my pack and not have to worry about the hose or stove breaking. Many of my friends have different types of butane and although they can get theirs started before me, I always get the water boiling in half the time. I got this as a gift but when researching found that it is one of the most versatile and reliable stoves out there. Thanks Optimus!

Snow Peak Titanium Multi Compact Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 July 7, 2009

I've been camping with these pots and pans twice now and can say that they are awesome. Some people say that they are too flimsy but this is not true. The have been crammed in my pack and still have now dents. The handles take a little getting used to but are great as you don't have to use a handle gripper as each pot has its own handles. The pots seems to grip the stove well even tho there are no grooves on the bottom. The pans are perfect lids as the handle is very useful on the side and not on the top when taking the lid off since the side handle never gets hot. I haven't had a problem with stuff sticking however I just try to make sure stuff doesn't get burnt if I'm not heating water.

If you like stuff thats form fitting then this is for you. The shirt is rather long which is nice so that your belly doesn't show when you reach up for things. Also I think that the wool is fine enough that it doesn't bother the skin. I've heard that the white isn't good as its a little see through but I wouldn't recommend the dark for very hot days.

Rating for this product: 5 June 8, 2009

This bag is perfect for all your bike stuff. It has 3 big main compartments perfect to fit your shoes in one, helmet in the other and camelbak in the middle. There is a picket for your helmet but my Giro didn't fit in it. There are also plenty of other pockets for multitools, Gu, tubes and anything else you want. There are vents on the top to make sure anything damp that goes in the bag still has a chance to dry off. If this thing is full then it takes the shape of a cube but if not full then it will not keep its shape and is hard to make stand up.

FLOATERS

Voile Asylum Ski

Voile Asylum Ski

Rating for this product: 5 April 20, 2009

I have no idea why these skis aren't very public yet. Anyways I think this is the first year they have come out with this line and they are the same shape as the insanes but just overall fatter. Before I got these skis I was also looking at getting the BD Megawatts however chose to get these instead for a couple of reasons. The first major reason was because of weight. If the Megawatts have a weak point its their weight. They are made to be able to take backcountry skiing however they weigh 10 lbs. I paired these Asylums with the dynafit tlt classics and my entire setup is probably 9. In fact, the first thing I noticed when I got on the lift with these puppies was that it felt like there was nothing hanging off my legs! The only other difference is these have more of a sidecut which allows you to make sharper turns. However, I must say that these babies love to make huge GS turns in the pow. They also aren't rockered but don't need to be as their surface area is so large. I find that they are more maneuverable compared to other fat skis also because of their weight. These skis are not meant for the groomers but when on powder I prefer nothing else.

I've been skiing on these for 2 seasons now and have to say that they are perfect for all your average all mountain day. If you love speed then these will take you there as they are very fast. Today I skied with them in about 3-4 inches of pow and felt like they were made for this. I have also skied with them in 20+ inches of pow and know that they were never designed for this. You have to work super hard at always leaning back or else your screwed. So that being said, they will give you 100% at everything except 12 inch plus powder.

you can tell that arcteryx has been making snow pants for quite awhile. my friend has had a pair of old ones for over 7 years and they are still holding up. anyways these are great for a couple of reasons. One the feel is great compared to the proshell stuff which is kind of noisy. also the fuzz inside feels good to the touch and probably provides a little insulation. I was skiing yesterday on a very warm day and there was water everywhere. The pants repelled it no prob. Also they are very good at keeping the cold out on very windy days.

You pretty much need to just try on a bunch of ski boots in order to find the one you like. These ended up being the ones for me. There were no spots that dug into my foot and the hold everywhere was great. They are a pretty stiff boot and also have a vibram sole which is a plus!

Backcountry.com Liner Glove - Men's

Backcountry.com Liner Glove - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 30, 2008

I like the grip on the and the material they are made with. They allow a big range of movement when using them. One issue is they didn't trim the material back all the way on the inside where the clip is attached to the glove so it irritates your wrist in that area. This should be fixed by just cutting off the extra material. Also I used the fit chart since from my wrist to tip of middle finger is 7 inches. the fingers were too long by about an inch. I ended up giving them to a friend that had bigger hands. I would have gotten the smalls instead but they don't have em so opted for the black diamond jetstreams which fit my hands better.

Smith Phenom Goggle

Smith Phenom Goggle

Rating for this product: 5 December 16, 2008

I got these goggles new for this season and can't think of anything wrong with these goggles. When you have em on the lens is crystal clear and won't fog up. Whatever that anti-fog dot does on the lens, it works. They fit the large giro helmets perfectly. The only problem I could see is if you have a helmet with a tight strap clasp on the back then this goggle might not fit as the clasp of the helmet is directly in the back which might get in the way of the helmet clasp.

Mountain Hardwear Direttissima Backpack - 2750-3500cu in

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2008

I originally had the dihedral but found it to be a tad bit small. This one is able to carry all your trad gear including rope and helmet plus extra clothing and food. The back is nice and rigid to keep your posture while hiking and the shoulder straps seem to fit well. The material seems like its made to withstand the elements for quite a while. There is also a camelbak pocket inside and two pockets in the top lid compartment.

Rating for this product: 4 December 10, 2008

5 stars if I were able to take back these pants and purchase a medium instead. beware, the chart is not correct unless you like your sweatpants to hug the butt. other wise go for it! The rest of the pants are nice and loose and they feel great. They also tend to keep away the static as this material seems like it would attract static.

Great for Standing

Dansko Professional Clog - Men's

Dansko Professional Clog - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 10, 2008

I accidentally got these shoes a bit too big but they still work. I however am not able to run in them as I am not used to shoes that have a sole bigger than .5 inches so I tend to sprain my ankles combined with the fact they are too big to begin with. I have had them for 3 years and use them 3-4 times a week at work. My job requires us to be standing for very long periods of time and these puppies help us from not getting back problems or sore feet at the end of standing for 8 hours.

Medium not for road bikers

Serfas Expandable Saddle Bag - Small

Serfas Expandable Saddle Bag - Small

Rating for this product: 5 December 3, 2008

The construction of this bag is great. Well thought out and the small zipper in the front is great for small things not getting lost in the big compartment. The only other comment I would like to make is that the medium bag is not made for a road bike. It is very big and will drag you down! I personally measured the front of it and it is 5.5 inches wide by about 4 inches tall without the expanded compartment. I'm sure this bag is great for long mountain bike rides tho. Hopefully the small will work better for my road bike.

Petzl Altios Climbing Helmet- 2010

Rating for this product: 4 November 24, 2008

I have only used this helmet a couple times but everything on it is great. The helmet breaths well in hot weather and if you want a sturdy helmet that you can throw around in your car and bag then this is the one for you. I do have a little problem with it sliding down too far on my forehead but will have to mess around with the adjustments to see if it will fix the problem.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 24, 2008

I've had these shoes for a while now and have to say that these are the best all round shoe I've had. They are super comfortable yet give great support. Very agile and light on the trail. Great laceup system and they look great. Venting to the shoe is phenomenal but if you want them for the winter go with the goretex version. Know that if you go with your size they will seem big since they are a trail running shoe and are made to have space in the front so your toes don't ever jam on the downhill.

Very Warm Mitten

Outdoor Research Meteor Mitten

Outdoor Research Meteor Mitten

Rating for this product: 4 November 24, 2008

These mittens are super warm. If you have trouble with cold hands get these. I have never while skiing really had the need to have the fleece inserts, just the shell they are so warm. The flip back flap on the fleece is nice especially with the magnets that hold the flaps back. Although I don't like the velcro on the mittens as they tend to want to eat up the fleece if they come into contact with eachother. Otherwise they have plenty of room in the sinch area to go on top of your jacket. If I have to choose I would also say they run a little on the big side but that might be because I only use the shell part.

These socks are great at holding back the foot stench. Also I have had a pair for over a year and they still function great. They are very low cut and thus I'm not sure if the thick pad in the back is necessary but I'm not gonna cut if off to see. If you are looking for a great sock that won't give you blisters on long runs, is thin and holds back stink then this is the sock for you.

When you look at the price they seem super expensive but compared to other competitive boots out there they are cheaper. I got this boot because it was recommended to me by my friend. Now I have a bunch of friends with this boot some who have more than one pair. I've climbed the middle teat in these and my feet stayed relatively dry. The only problem is the shoe laces seem to come undone more than usual.

If your looking for a super packable and light jacket to wear around this is the one. Be aware that it doesn't have any pockets or pull chords anywhere. CamelBak M.U.L.E. Hydration Pack -3L

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

Since the mule has been out for so long and each generation getting better and better, I think this one is getting almost perfect. The shoulder strap had rings so when your loading the water they don't get in the way, the pack is very compressible or non to make way for more clothing. Much better than previous models where you had to yank the thing up and down to get the bladder in. Now you just zip it up and its good to go.

Polar RS200sd Heart Rate Monitor

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2008

Before I bought a HR monitor watch I researched a ton. Suunto's came in a close second but the footpod seemed to be more reliable and accurate with the polar technology and the chest strap is much smaller and less noticeable when wearing compared to the Suunto. I also bought this over the higher end models as it is much more low profile and friendly towards being able to wear it in public and not looking like a freak. 4 stars because it could look a little better.

Yakima Q Clips - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 5 November 18, 2008

I have an 05 legacy gt and for those that have the subie with the no frame above the window might wonder how the q clips grab onto the car. Usually the clips hold on to the metal of the actual frame of the car. I was a little skeptical about how these grab onto the plastic ledge just above the window. I can now say after a season of use that these things won't damage the plastic and can hold quite a bit of force from the rack. P.S. you don't need to grip stickers it comes with if you have my setup

Osprey Packs Atmos 50 Pack - 2800-3200 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 November 18, 2008

I give it 4 stars since after a long time, if you aren't wearing anything heavier than a baselayer, the hip straps will tend to cut into you. Also the airframe is great for keeping your back cool except it greatly decreases the amount of space that you can pack in the pack. I would say it actually reduces the pack to about 45-46 liters. I would buy this again for the price and light weightedness.
