Marmot Scree Softshell Pant - Men's

April 6, 2009

Hey Andy,
I'm not from Marmot, but can answer for you. Nope. Sounds like youve got the same problem I do, long legs, little waist. Check out Arcteryx gear for tall skinny guys stuff. Also, Mountain Hardwear is starting to put some stuff out in long lengths.

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

Black Diamond Raven Ice Axe

This axe works exactly liek it should, no more, no less. It is light enough to satisfy my desires, and cheap enough to satisfy my wife's.
FWIW, I am 6'2 with a 34-35" inseam and carry the 70cm for 90% of my travels.

Worth the 15 bucks.

Black Diamond Slider Leash

Black Diamond Slider Leash

Rating for this product: 5 April 1, 2009

Way worth the 15 bucks. I usually tie my axe into my harness, but there are occasions when I want to leash up to the wrist. It is very easy to adjust for length, and comfortable even on an ungloved wrist. Toss the tied webbing and get a leash!

One of the best I've owned

Marmot Super Hero Softshell Jacket - Men's

Marmot Super Hero Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2009

I wanted a softshell to be a softshell. Not an insulating layer. This is a softshell. It does have insulating properties (light fleece layer) in places where snow could accumulate (darker red on shoulders/arms/back) as well as tougher material in these place. It is plenty warm for warm weather alpine activities. Most of the time we are pulling our softshells off while pushing, and pulling down on while standing still, this is the perfect in-between layer.
I'm 6'2" 172lbs with longish arms. Wear a 15 1/2, 35/36 shirt with 42 chest. I bought a large and it fits great.

Exactly what I was looking for

CAMP USA XLC 490 Universal Crampon

CAMP USA XLC 490 Universal Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 March 23, 2009

I was on the search for a lightweight aluminum crampon for my non-crampon-compatible boots. For the money these are the best in my opinion. They strap on super easy, cinch securely, and come off easy. I think the second points are a bit over-aggressive, as they are NOT for mixed or vertical climbing, but they do look really cool.
One thing to note, they tabs are fairly narrow. I had to do some creative filing on my LaSportiva mountaineering boots to get them to fit easily, but it was minor and only took a few minutes.

They're adequate

Smith Reactor Max Interchangeable Sunglasses

Smith Reactor Max Interchangeable Sunglasses

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2009

Got these to replace my Uvex Sportsters.
They fit a medium sized face well, but look huge on a small face. The arms are very comfortable, and far enough from the temples to wear over helmet straps without an interference. The lenses are kinda wierd the first few times you change them. I keep feeling like I am going to break the frames snapping them in. Tim will tell.
The bad...
The white is really, really bright white, like blinding white.
They don't come with a cleaning cloth, and require you to grab the front and rear of the lense to change.
The lenses dont fit well in the space provided in the case.
The good...
Outstanding fit
good looking design
great optical clarity, especially the red lens
awesome nosepiece stays put even when drenched in sweat
awesome case.

Great glasses, worth the money.

Outstanding

Outdoor Research Zenith Mitten

Outdoor Research Zenith Mitten

Rating for this product: 4 March 13, 2009

The liner glove alone is worth the price. The mittens do fit a little small, I would size up one size. Very warm and adequate for most of the Americas. I'm with +1Time on the palms. Very tough, and grippy, but you do lose much feeling with the palms. The Duoclinch gauntlet closure is awesome. Very simple and quick to use.

Smith Projekt Sunglasses - Polarized

Smith Projekt Sunglasses - Polarized

Rating for this product: 4 February 11, 2009

I'm not a big lens kinda guy. I actually kind of against the whole hollywood, oversized glasses fad because, well, I remember what we looked like when we wore oversized glasses in the late 80's, not pretty. But these glasses rock. They look stylish without looking too L.A., but where they really shine is in the lenses, the clarity is awesome, without being too dark to wear into the dusk hours.

Mountain Hardwear Stance Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Stance Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 29, 2009

I think these pants are getting a bad rap. So I'll address a couple of things.
A. They are full zip snow pants, not rain pants, if it's raining, you'll probably get some water through the zippers.
B. Waterproof pants need to be taken care of differently than normal pants, if you are going to be washing them, make sure you use a detergent and restorer. Mtn Hardwear can recommend what kind.

That being said,
They have been great for me so far. I have used them snowboarding, snowshoeing, and have done some light mountaineering in them. When I got them one of the zippers wouldn't release, MH took care of that for me fast. They are a bit baggier than a typical mountaineering pant, but not excessively, like snowboarding pants would be.
I have used gaiters with them, so really can't comment about the gaiters. The suspenders take a little getting used to, but weren't really much of a bother.

Awesome for Rescue

Metolius Safe Tech All-Around Harness

Metolius Safe Tech All-Around Harness

Rating for this product: 4 January 26, 2009

It is not as comfortable when on hanging belays, but as the previous reviewer stated, is awesome at keeping you head up in a fall.
The mountain rescue team I'm a member of is making the transition to the Safe Tech's as our team gear. The full strength loops and rear belay make it awesome for rescue, and the adjustable drop on the leg loops is great for when you use varying garments under your harness (alpine, rock, summer, etc).

cold feet

Kelty Light Year XP Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

Kelty Light Year XP Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Synthetic

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2009

I used the Kelty LIght Year XP 20 this fall on a Mt. Whitney summit trip. The bag is very light, and compresses nicely for a synthetic bag (although the included stuff sack is a wierd shape).
My only beef is with the foot vents. While they could be nice if you overheat, I seemed to keep pushing aside the baffle in my sleep, causing a lack of insulation for my footsies.
I did use this bag down to 17 degrees F and was warm with my insulating layers on. (except for the feet of course)
I did return the bag, but would still recommend it if you're not pushing the temperature rating to the limit.

Merrell Uniform Jacket - Men's

Merrell Uniform Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 5, 2009

I'm 6'2" and skinny and have a hard time finding jackets that don't make my monkey arms look even monkeyer. This is a very nice jacket for kicking around town or maybe slow easy nighttime skiing/boarding. It is very warm for my area, so I've been a little limited on the amount that I've gotten to use it. Probably the best sitting-around-the-campfire-lying-to-eachother jacket I've got.

Merrell Uniform Jacket - Men's

Merrell Uniform Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

Where this jacket really shines is sitting around the campfire sipping hot cocoa. I've gotten plenty of complements on the looks, but the warmth and comfort is where it's at. I am 6'2" and 165lb, one of those tall gangly guys. I end up returning a bunch of gear to places because it just doesn't fit. This jacket fits me really well, sleeves could be an inch longer, but then again, I've got really long monkey arms. As a warm in town, coffeeshop, bonfire jacket, I don't think you can outdo this for the money.

Awesome shirt that occasionally wrinkles the nose.

Mountain Hardwear Wicked Tech T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Wicked Tech T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 7, 2008

These are the team shirts for my Mountain Rescue Team. Performance wise, they are awesome. We use them for multiple days at a time, and they work great. They wick better than any other tech type shirt I've worn, and the paneling is cut to move with you, so there is no binding (which is great while climbing) They do rub on the nipples a bit...not my kind of thing...but some may enjoy it I guess.

On to the smell.
Now, I'm speaking for the rest of the people on the team, because when I sweat, my body aroma resembles a nice mix of fresh baked cookies, spring rain, and wildflowers. The rest of our team though, gets a little rank after a few days. This shirt doesn't seem to fight the stench as much as others I've worn. Personally I don't notice it, but others on the team have said they have noticed it.

Final thoughts~ You won't regret buying these. I like them enough while on training that I've purchased two more to wear on personal time.

Pearl Izumi Slice Full-Zip Bike Jersey - Men's

Pearl Izumi Slice Full-Zip Bike Jersey - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 7, 2008

I ain't gonna lie, I bought two of these jerseys when I got my new bicycle, because they matched my frame. I may not be that fast, but I sure as heck look the part.
The jerseys are awesome. I wasn't sure about the zippered pocket, but have found it's awesome for the ID/cash/keys.
The only thing bad about the jersey is that it's shorter than most jerseys, making me self conscious about whether or not I'm showing a little bare midrift to the cute chicks in the car next to me at the stoplight.

Marmot Photon Jacket - Men's

Marmot Photon Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 October 22, 2008

Just an FYI, Radon Red = Magenta.

I don't feel quite as manly wearing this as my other Marmot jackets (I've got 3 of em) but it is a very nice jacket. Warm and windproof, now I just gotta figure out a way to stop the other guys from laughing at me. Any Ideas? I am 6'2" 165lbs. The L jacket fits well, a little short for my gangly monkey arms, but every jacket always is. It could be cut a little more athletic for us skinny guys, but I'd say for the majority of the population it would fit true to size.
