An upgrade of the classic Gamma MX

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Softshell Jacket - Men's

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 22, 2009

Ok. So here's the deal. I have owned a Gamma MX for several years now (I have owned three). I was skeptical when Arc'teryx decided to revamp their classic softshell. I decided to try it out and I never thought they could improve this jacket, but I was wrong. Every feature they changed for this jacket made it better. It is a half inch longer in the body, which makes it a much better fit. The old rubber/plastic wind flap of the old version always rubbed on my neck and they replaced the upper portion of the wind flap with a soft fleece backed fabric (perfect). The cuffs of the past version tended to stretch and not regain their elasticity. Now the cuffs are made of a more stretchy fabric and retain their retention. I really like the new waist drawcord of the new version as well. Instead of adjusting them in the front pockets, which requires taking off your gloves, they are now in the typical place on the sides where you can reach and adjust with gloves on. The attention to detail and quality of this jacket is as good as ever. This is definitely an upgrade from the previous version.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

December 23, 2008

Mr. Critical Eh? I have something in the Carrot color and it looks much better on cloth than on the web.--Word Kisow. I have the carbon and it's neutral so it flies with anything. Even pink. Even though I have no pink. This jacket is great. The wrist pocket was useless. The chest pocket is much more useful.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

December 23, 2008

Hey Josh, sadly us big guys (I'm 6'7) are at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to Arc’teryx as it's in commonwealth size's so xl is a L in US, so you could try the xxl but they still fit weird I reckon PaulI have owned both the Alchemy and the Gamma MX and the Gamma MX is a bit longer.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

The Venta AR uses Gore Windstopper so it does not breathe as well as the Polartec Powershield used in the Gamma MX, but then offers great windstopping capabilities. They both are not waterproof, although the Venta AR may do a little better in that department, since it is less permeable. I haved owned two Gamma MX's and really enjoy how stretchy it is and how warm it is for it's weight. The Gamma MX has been around for years and they haven't changed it one bit, unlike some of their other jackets. As far as off the hill, the Gamma MX is super comfy and probably a better jacket for climbing and the Venta AR might suit you better on the hill. Bottomline, you can't go wrong with either one.

I'd go with an XL for sure.I would go with a Large for a slimmer fit. I am 6'0 and 175 and the medium is more than big enough for me.

I love this jacket! Just like the description say's it's insanely breathable and waterproof! I would recommend this jacket without question. I actually found this jacket to be much more comfortable than the Arc'T. Give it a try. You'll love it!!!___I think they come from the same factory...actually, Backcountry.com works with Westcomb for their products, not Arc'Teryx.

I just tried this jacket on and I will have to admit, its sick. I will probably end up buying this jacket as soon as I can. To answer your question, it is more on the shorter side. I'm 5' 9" and 170 and tried on both the M and L and will end up buying the large. The medium would have taken it if I never planned on wearing anything more than a light and thin T Shirt or long sleeve T, but just in case I do, I'm opting for the large. Hope that helps.Hey,I am about your size and the medium fits great for a change. I run into the same problems and this jacket from MH is longer than most they kick out.

For the price, this is the best shell Arc'Teryx makes. Super durable and lightweight Gore-tex Paclite feels really nice next to skin. Closer fit than the Beta or Theta jackets.

MH steps it up with the Dragon

Mountain Hardwear Dragon Softshell Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Dragon Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

I have been skeptical of MH for the past couple years and had turned to other brands, but decided to try this jacket out because I had heard so many good things about it and it's predecessor, the Torch. I am very impressed with the fit of this piece. I have a climber build and am 6'O" and am borderline between medium and large in most brands. Since I have a thin build, large is usually huge in the chest and mediums are too short in the torso. I actually held off from buying MH's Torch jacket because it was cut too short. At 29" in length the medium is a great fit and is snug throughout the body with enough room for a base layer. As this will be a skiing and climbing jacket, I don't expect needing any more room for layering. The sleeve length is generously cut. The elastic thumb holes will come in handy when active and tuck neatly up the sleave when wearing around town. I have ran in the jacket and really appreciated the pit zips to cool down. Overall, I am very impressed with the jacket so far and am looking forward to using it for its purpose on a climb very soon.

Why would you want a ski coat that's not waterproof? Go with Gore-Tex Pro Shell, which is found in most of Arc'Teryx's Ascent and Descent lines.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

November 1, 2008

both jacket are about the same when it comes to warmth, but the hooded Venta SV, (AR no hood) adds a hood and little change in weigh. also the a look at the MH Dragon jacket. it is comparable to the Venta. If warmth is the issue go with TNF windwall or MH windstopper tech jacketMy experience with the MH windstopper tech jacket is anything but warm. If warmth is an issue go with the Arc'Teryx Easyrider (high loft fleece). I have found the Arc'Teryx Gamma MX warmer than a lot of jackets, even though it is so thin.

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 11, 2007

I have had my Gamma MX for over a year now and have worn it almost everyday since I have got it. It takes a beating and has worn very nicely. It packs very small and holds the weather off short of a deluge. I have several other softshells and they collect dust in my closet. I also own other Arc'Teryx products and this one gets the most use by far.
