Mountain Hardwear Transition Super Power Softshell Jacket - Men's
2 days ago
jsung. The Transition Jacket w/ hood is 100% windproof all the way around. The Super Power Transition is made with a combo of Transition windproof fabric (on the front) and lightweight power stretch fabric (on the back) This allows for protection in the front when running or skate skiing and phenomenal breathability through the fleece fabric on the back of the jacket. So, for running, skate skiing, cycling or other high output activities... I prefer the Transition Super Power Jacket. For backcountry skiing or climbing I prefer the Hooded Transition Jacket because of the increased weather and wind protection... and this explain why I have both in my closet! Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Pinnacle Stretch Gaiter
2 days ago
Both Mountain Hardwear and Black Diamond make great gaiters that would work perfectly for general backcountry usage. I am obviously biased one way... but, if you want more specific comparisons between products more info and product names would really help. Also specific info regarding how you are going to use them would help a lot as well. One cool thing about our gaiters is that we have simplified the strap/buckle inter-face by getting rid of the post in the buckle and strap holes on the straps themselves making a relatively unbreakable system... pretty cool and unique to Mountain Hardwear. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Down Jacket - Men's

Devin. Short answer? Yes. Long answer... it depends on what else you are wearing, how you have it layered, temps outside, your specific metabolism, and last but not least... the weather. If you are looking for a warm, relatively durable, and versatile down jacket... look no further. If you think you might need one with a little more weather protection check out the Mountain Hardwear SL Hooded Jacket. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Down Parka - Men's

The only difference between the Parka and the Jacket are a couple of pockets and the overall length itself. The material package is exactly the same between the Jacket and the Parka. Not sure why there are more issues with the Parka over the jacket. It must nothing more than a coincidence...

Mountain Hardwear Compressor PL Insulated Jacket - Men's
3 days ago
BeeSB. We use 120grams of Primaloft Eco (50% recycled) in our Compressor Jacket. The Nano uses 60grams of Primaloft PL One. 120grams vs. 60grams... more insulation = warmer. The Nano uses a 15D Polyester Shell... the Compressor uses a 15D Ripstop Nylon Shell. Nylon is more durable than Polyester when it comes to shell materials. Both the Nano and the Compressor would provide a similar water resistance considering both use a very good DWR. I hope this info helps!

Mountain Hardwear Kramer Softshell Jacket - Men's
October 27, 2009
Scott. The Flume Jacket is a hardshell utilizing the Conduit DT laminate coupled with strategically placed fleece on the inside of the jacket for extra warmth. We call this well placed fleece - MicroClimate Zoning. The Kramer Jacket is a hardshell/softshell combo that utilizes a Conduit 3-layer Shell fabric coupled with a Conduit softshell fabric (fleecy back) all packed together in one sweet jacket. It also has the strategically placed fleece as well. The feature set is similar between the two jackets. So, in short, one is a hardshell and one is a hardshell/softshell combo. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Typhon Glove
October 27, 2009
Fietsrider. Due to the liners the gloves may feel a little more snug than normal when you first pick them up. If you pull out the liners and then put them on I think you will find that the large is the right size for you. Once you use the gloves a bit and they 'break in' the fit will get more and more dialed! I hope you like them as I think this style in particular are brilliant especially when you consider the OutDry technology!

Chris S. These would be a great solution for what you are looking for. If you want something that blocks a little bit more wind and may be a little more durable... check out either our Gravity Glove, which is made with Windstopper Fleece and has a leather palm or the Torsion Glove which is thin and light and made with Conduit Softshell material and Pittards Goat Skin leather. If you just want fleece, stretchy and light... stick with these. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Beryllium Bib - Men's
October 25, 2009
Based on the sizing chart found on our website - mountianhardwear.com... I would say that you fall directly into a medium. However, depending on how you want to layer you might just might be more comfortable in a large. For reference, I'm and inch shorter than you and 20lbs. lighter and wear a medium. I fall right in-between a medium and a small but sized up because of how I use them. Hope this helps with your decision.

Mountain Hardwear Lodown Down Jacket - Men's
October 25, 2009
Jimmy. The LoDown Jacket is made with a 30D Nylon Taffeta. Here are the details: 100% nylon full dull microfiber taffeta. 1.5 oz/yd2, downproof by construction, water repellant finish and silky soft. I would not call this material 'rugged' however. If you are looking for a more durable version check out the Sub Zero Jacket from Mountain Hardwear. We use a Taslan on the shoulders and wear areas to make it a bit more durable over the long term. Good luck... hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Dragon Softshell Jacket - Men's
October 22, 2009
Kasper. The Dragon Jacket is made entirely of a Windstopper Fabric from Gore called 'Torch Softshell'. Here are the details of the fabric: 100% polyester, 50 denier, full dull microfiber knit in a soft, stretch jersey construction. Backer is a 40 denier, brushed warp knit tricot. Gore WINDSTOPPER® laminate and DWR finish. 5.4 oz/yd2. Everything that is light green (in the product photo) is this Windstopper fabric. I have been using a Torch Jacket, made with a similar fabric, for 3 years now and have had no issues with durability... and believe me I have beat on it. Another detail is that the Dragon Jacket is welded together using our patented Zweld technology which is essentially a waterproof and welded seam. We are not calling the Dragon waterproof however due to the fact that it is made with Windstopper Softshell... but it is extremely weather resistant especially considering the Zwelded seams. The Alibi Jacket seems to be a hard shell soft shell combo (not sure if it is taped) made with OR's Ventia fabric which I assume is similar to our Conduit... combined with some sort of stretch Cordura in the body (according to their website.) Lots of info here... hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Transition Super Power Softshell Jacket - Men's
October 20, 2009
This would work well for your specified use. It blocks the wind with Windstopper fabric from Gore in the green fabric (in the picture). The black fabric is lightweight powerstretch that breathes really well and allows for a very versatile jacket. Using it as a layering piece or on its own for high output activity is a perfect application of this piece. 6ft., 170.. I would consider a large. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Terra Jacket - Men's
October 20, 2009
Timbo. This Terra Shell is extremely lightweight and durable. But, one area where ProShell out performs this particular Conduit face fabric is in durability. If I were going to work in Siberia and needed a durable shell... I would look towards Proshell Gore. Proshell is typically made with a 40 D shell. The Terra Shell is made with a 20 D shell. Higher the number typically the more durable. The Beryllium Jacket is one of Mountain Hardwear's top of the line ProShells. The other jacket to consider would be the Amalgam Jacket from Hardwear as well. It is made with a 70 D face fabric coupled with Paclite from Gore which is extremely breathable. This 70 D fabric wears like iron. Hope this info helps!

You can have these jackets embroidered but only by 3rd party embroiderers. Backcountry and/or Mountain Hardwear won't do this for you. One thing I would consider though is the light weight nature of the fabric this jacket is made with. I don't think it would embroider as well as fleece or something of the like but most embroiderers would be able to advise you in this. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Terra Jacket - Men's
October 19, 2009
eez. The Conduit fabric used in the Synchro Jacket is Conduit Softshell fabric. The Conduit fabric used in the Terra Shell... is Conduit Terra Shell fabric which is the most breathable hard shell fabric we have ever come up with. 'Conduit' simply refers to our proprietary waterproof and breathable laminate that we use in many of our fabrics from outer shells to tents to sleeping bags. So, laminate the same... face fabric different. In addition, this Terra Shell fabric actually out performed Pro Shell Gore fabrics in breathability tests and is absolutely amazing. The days of Gore being the most breathable laminate are over. This jacket will fit more like a Dragon and less like a Synchro... tighter in the body like the Dragon with similar arm length. Hope this helps!

Scott. A powder skirt in jackets refers to a flap or skirt of fabric that sits on the inside of many ski jackets at waist level which is designed to keep powder snow out when skiing... or more precisely when crashing while skiing. There is usually an elastic element incorporated into the design to keep them snug around the waist while skiing as well. Some people like them... some folks don't. All of the powder skirts in Mountain Hardwear ski jackets are removable via a zipper interface for this reason. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Space Station Tent 15-Person 4-Season
October 19, 2009
No... but, it will keep the wind and sun off of you next time you are spending 3 months at the 17K Everest Basecamp! I would also wager it would out last all those other competing tents as well. They are priced this way for a reason... if the materials we use were less expensive, heavier, and/or not as strong, the tent would be less expensive. The titanium oxide coating on the fabric, the uber-geodesic pole design, and overall strength of the entire package makes this one of the most popular basecamp tents around.

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's

jsung. Depending on how you layer for your runs the Alchemy and the Leadville might be a little heavy. The Alchemy, like the Leadville, is made utilizing Gore Windstopper fabric and is extremely weather resistant. However, the seams on the Alchemy (not sure about the Leadville) are not taped so the jacket is not waterproof. If I were looking for a more running oriented jacket for the DC area with weather protection provided by Windstopper... I would look no further than the Mountain Hardwear Transition Jacket. They are made with a Polartec Thermal Pro Fabric which is a US company but I am pretty sure they are made over seas. Hope this info helps!

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Men's
October 6, 2009
Just answered your question somewhere else on this page. The weight is 2lb, 4oz... and this would be a great down jacket for cold days on the Kaiparowits. If you did not want to take down... check out the Hooded Compressor Jacket from Hardwear as well. It won't be as warm due to the amount of insulation but it would work well for the use you describe. Hope this helps!

jpuro. There are in fact inside pockets. If my memory serves me correctly there is one on the inside left chest and one water bottle pocket on the right and one glove/goggle pocket on the left. If you refer to the 'Tech Specs' it echos this as well. Hope this helps!

E.Rudwick. Not sure what you will be doing in Northern Norway but if you are going to be spending a substantial amount of time outside... perhaps herding Reindeer with the Sami, I would consider a warmer jacket such as the Absolute Zero Jacket from Mountain Hardwear (warmest) or the Sub Zero SL Hooded Jacket (warmer). This jacket is extremely warm but -35 is pretty darned cold and depending on how much time you are hanging out in those temps one of our other down jackets might suit you better. Hope this helps.

Victor. This jacket is made utilizing out Conduit DT Fabric. Technically it could be considered a 2.5 layer (shell, laminate, and DT treatment = 2.5 layer) jacket but most would call it a two layer (shell, laminate = 2 layer)... Hope this helps.

Mountain Hardwear Epic Glove - Women's

These will work but depending on how cold your hands get and how cold it is outside... you might want to consider a glove with a little bit more weather protection and insulation. Check out the W's Onza Glove from Hardwear for a glove that might suit the situation a little better. Again, if it is not to cold... the Epic Gloves should work great. Many folks spring ski in this glove and love it. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Pant - Men's

Luka. These pants are made utilizing Conduit Softshell material. If you counted all the layers of the fabric it would be considered a 3-Ply. But, softshell fabric is typically not measured that way. The outershell would be the woven softshell material... the middle layer would be the Conduit laminate... and the inner layer would be a thin fleece. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Alchemy Softshell Jacket - Men's
October 6, 2009
Vejiburger. Thanks for your questions. The Mountain Hardwear Nemisis Jacket is a Fleece Jacket with Softshell (Schoeller Fabric to be exact) fabric panels and will keep some of the wind off and some of the water for moderate weather protection. Consider it to be a cross between a fleece and a softshell jacket. The Alchemy Jacket from Mountain Hardwear is a Gore Windstopper Softshell Jacket that will block 100% of the wind and a good bit of the water making it a much more weather resistant jacket than the Nemisis. Both jackets have a phenomenal DWR. The Alchemy Jacket was one of the first softshells in the industry to utilize a Windstopper Laminate back in '02 when it was introduced to the market and this laminate makes it one of the most weather protective softshells out there. Most of the Softshells on the market at that time were air permeable... which brings me to the NF Bionic. The Bionic is a Air Permeable Soft Shell treated with a DWR that will keep some weather at bay and breathe well for high output activities. We have a few air permeable softshells in our line. Check out the Android Jacket from Hardwear to see the jacket most similar to the Bionic. In conclusion, All of the jackets are made well and will last you a long time. Here is how I would compare them from the most weather protective to the least which may be the easiest way to decide: 1. Alchemy Softshell 2. Apex Bionic 3. Nemisis Jacket. Hope this helps!!

Kevin. Why pick this one over the others? A couple differences... this is one of the first stretch, welded, and waterproof shells on the market... and at 10oz the weight it hard to beat. Also, due to our patented 'Z-weld', tape is NOT needed to make the jacket waterproof. I hope all this info helps!

Djangod. You know we don't put temperature ratings on outerwear due to the variation in individual metabolism and the huge amount of variables we would have to account for to give something a solid rating. With that said, I know that the Phantom is quite a bit warmer than the Compressor. The Compressor is insulated by 120g Primaloft and the Phantom is insulated with quite a bit of 800 fill down. I have both of them in my closet and the Phantom comes out on the coldest days. Hope this helps!

Mountain Hardwear Panzee Hooded Fleece Jacket - Women's
September 28, 2009
Kathryn. Are you looking for a shell or softshell or another fleece to go over the one you already have? The Panzee is made with a thinner thermal fleece from Polartec that works great as an insulating layer and will keep you very warm. If you want something to keep weather at bay in addition to your fleece... I would consider a softshell jacket or a lightweight shell. Check out the Women's Offwidth Jacket from Mountain Hardwear as a suggestion for a good softshell to put over what you already have. Hope this info helps!

Mountain Hardwear Hooded Compressor Insulated Jacket - Men's

Daneil. If you want to go with a jacket that is synthetic and not down the Compressor would be a great choice. If you want to go with a little bit warmer jacket... check out the Alcove Jacket from Mountain Hardwear as well. The Compressor has 120grams of Primaloft for insulation. The Alcove has 200grams... so it will be a little warmer but also heavier. If you want to keep it light... look no further than the Compressor. Hope this info helps!

These pants are water resistant not water proof. They have a good DWR that will keep some water off but they are not waterproof. If you are in a wet environment you will need a shell of some sort to make them completely weather proof. If you are high, dry, and cold in the alpine you might not need a shell at all. Hope this info helps... good luck!

Mountain Hardwear Skyledge 2.1 Tent 2-Person 3-Season
September 23, 2009
This is a double-walled tent made mostly of mesh. If you ventilate the tent properly you should not have issues with condensation. This is the short answer. The semi-long rudimentary answer is that condensation occurs when dew-point is reach on any surface. Also, our bodies are composed of 98% water. You would be amazed at how much moisture is exhaled while you sleep. When the temperature drops and humidity increases water condenses... bottom line. Double-walled tents, ventilation, dry weather, and low humidity all help to mitigate or improve our experience with condensation especially when it comes to tents. Hope this info helps..

The 70D Paclite fabric we use to make this jacket is from Gore. The DWR is applied by Gore as a result and is part of the "gauranteed to keep you dry" Gore gaurantee. I think you will find that as long as you keep your jacket CLEAN the DWR will function well for a long time. Again, keeping your jacket clean will really help maintain the life of any DWR. Hope this info helps!

Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Overboot
September 14, 2009
Steve. They are designed to cover the ENTIRE boot including the boot tread and so can only be used in conjunction with strap-on crampons and or snowshoes. There are folks who have removed some of the closed cell foam in the gaiters themselves to make them compatible with a partial-clip/strap-on crampon but I have not tried it myself. In extremely cold environments it is really important to cover the entire boot including the boot sole especially when there is a piece of metal strapped on to your foot! I hope this helps and they work out for you. Good luck...

Mountain Hardwear Compressor Insulated Jacket - Boys'
September 10, 2009
Kristine. This jacket is made with 120g Primaloft. Primaloft is used as a synthetic insulation throughout the industry in outerwear and sleeping bags by many manufacturers. The 'bulk' you mention is due to the 120g primalofts thickness. If you had the same amount of down and the same amount of primaloft the warmth would be similar but the weight would be different. Down is warmer for its weight than other synthetic insulations like primaloft. Combined with a shell and/or mid and base layers this jacket could be used in very cold temperatures. I have used it as an belay coat climbing and have skied with it on cold days. I hope this info helps!

Mountain Hardwear Xenon Jacket - Men's
September 10, 2009
Scott. This jacket falls under GoreTex's Performance Shell category... mostly because they did not know where to put it. We combined a 70 denier face fabric with Paclite, one of the most breathable Gore laminates, so that you could achieve the durability of Pro-Shell for roughly $100+ bucks less and maintain phenomenal breathability. So, since we used the Paclite laminate you could ask why it doesn't fall in the Paclite category? Again, this is due to the durability of the 70 D face fabric and because of this durability Gore decided to split the difference and put it in Performance Shell. I hope this helps to clarify the placement of a unique jacket in Gore's product marketing.
