Beal Edlinger II 10.2mm Rope DO NOT USE

I'm looking to buy my first rope, so what does it mean by Double pick, under sheath construction. I know that the sheath is the outside covering of the rope, but beyond that...

Five Ten Anasazi VCS Climbing Shoe

October 9, 2008

I've been climbing regularly in a climbing gym for 3 or 4 months now and I've been using Sportiva's mantis shoes, however I've noticed that I have a hard time staying on jibs and even more trouble trying to toe hook when I'm on overhangs. I'm trying to decide between these, the galileo, or the mocassyms which I see a lot of at the gym (or even another really good shoe). As i live in Indiana I won't be doing much outdoors climbing, but maybe some bouldering. Any sugestions?

Arc'teryx C40 Chalk Bag

Arc'teryx C40 Chalk Bag

Rating for this product: 3 September 16, 2008

Its ok. Its nothing special. It would be nice if the bouldering strap was more easy to remove. Its a nice but small size Chalk bag. The opening seems to not want to close as well as I'd prefer and sometimes chalk puffs out.

Metolius Super Chalk

Metolius Super Chalk

Rating for this product: 3 September 16, 2008

I like the blocks of Metolius climbing chalk better I think. It's easy to use too much of this stuff at once, it looks like it wears off quickly, but it actually does keep you dry.

The North Face Hang On T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Hang On T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 1, 2008

I LOVE this t-shirt. It is some of the best, softest, and most comfortable cotton I've ever worn. In addition the cut is perfectly fitted. Normally I buy smalls so they're fitted around my torso, but then have the problem of the sleeves being a bit short. However with this shirt I had no such problem!

Jetboil Group Cooking System with 1.5 Liter Cooking Pot

Jetboil Group Cooking System with 1.5 Liter Cooking Pot

Rating for this product: 4 September 1, 2008

I used one of these for a 4 night trip in the Smokey Mountains in February and it worked wonderfully. I liked it a lot especially compared to the MSR wisperlite we always used to use. Its super light weight, compact, and was perfect for two people. It is much easier to set up and start than a whisper lite. It got below freezing temp, depending on where we were and always at night, but this gave it no problems and heated water very quickly. The only cons I saw were that the plastic lid warped, probably due to the heat, and thus no longer fit the top of the pan correctly and that it would probably not work for big groups. Three people, maybe four, would be the max for one of these, and plan on doing several rounds of cooking. One fuel cannister plus a back up would be more than enough for five day trip.

Great first pair

La Sportiva Mantis Climbing Shoe

La Sportiva Mantis Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 3 August 30, 2008

These are the first rock climbing shoes I've ever purchased and have thus far been great! I've been climbing in them two to four times a week at a climbing gym for a couple weeks now and I have no real complaints about this pair. They seem to grip well, even on very tiny footholds. I gave them three stars only because I have little experience with other shoes to reference them with. I bought an 11.5 (US) which is generally the same as my street shoe size and they seem to be working well. I MIGHT go a 1/2 size smaller as they may stretch and the heel might be a bit big, but as is they are comfortable enough that I don't bother taking them on and off in the gym.

Outdoor Research Helium Compression Sacks

Outdoor Research Helium Compression Sacks

Rating for this product: 5 March 28, 2008

This stuff sack is amazing. I used it on my last week-long trip to put my 0 degree sleeping bag in. I used the 7 x 19 one. It was a tight squeeze and I worried it might rip as I compressed it, but it definitely held up well. By the end of the trip I was compressing it even more.

Marmot Impulse Jacket - Men's

Marmot Impulse Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 28, 2008

Amazing buy. I used it during a week in the Smokey Mountains. It fits great and I was able to wear it over a Columbia fleece. It was below 32 degrees at night and it definitely kept me warm and dry. I've even worn it around campus walking to class in the rain. It's been comfortable up to about 50 degrees, then I started getting a bit warm and needed to use the vents. So far so good!

Patagonia Lightweight Hiking Crew Sock

Patagonia Lightweight Hiking Crew Sock

Rating for this product: 4 March 28, 2008

I used these during a week in the Smokey Mountains in combination with the Patagonia Lightweight Hiking Crew Liner Socks. I thought they were better than the smart wool i usually use, even more comfortable. The only problem I had with them was they weren't quite warm enough at night as it got below freezing.

I had thought about not even using liners after the various other kinds I've tried. However these are great and I plan on replacing all my others with these.
