Versatile for tele.

G3 Rapid Transit Ski

G3 Rapid Transit Ski

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2009

This is a versatile ski. It has enough float to handle powder and bowls. It has enough carvy enough to handle moguls and bombing groomers. I never found it to really hop or push me from turn to turn.

At the resorts I just load up the tip and it will go. It has done me well on Colorado and BC hut trips.

My new BC tele board

Movement Skis Goliath Sluff Ski

Movement Skis Goliath Sluff Ski

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2009

This is my new board for BC use (and some powder days at the resorts). When demoed in a 184 I found it to pretty much ignore funky wind blown snow and wind crust. The turned up tip plowed over most things and resurfaced when it it went under. It was a blast in the soft. It is stiff enough to go far out on edge at speed on harder groomers. The ski was turny enough to be fun in trees and run double black moguls at the resort for half a day. This does not ski like a tele ski. It has most of the edge hold of and alpine board but is missing some of the dampness. Forgiving of snow conditions. Needs to be driven on the down. The 184 does not ski as long as it sounds.

Fun for the BC.

G3 Ticket Ski

In the bad sense.

On the good side. These are nibmle skis that are easy to carve on hard hardpack. They are easy to take through moguls. The asym. side cut makes it easy to keep the skis an equal distance in the turn.

On the bad side. They felt better in alpine turns. There is a very small sweet spot. Never found it to be a stable ski. Not damp. They get deflected in a surprising number of conditions. Not recommended for tele.

Best beacon I have used so far

Mammut Pulse Barryvox Avalanche Beacon

Mammut Pulse Barryvox Avalanche Beacon

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2009

After having to think to solve a multiple burial problem in an avy training, I picked up a Pulse. It has more features and is easier to use then the Pieps. Generally it will find all beacons in range in about 45 seconds. It is generally just a matter of walking, probing and marking. Impressive.

There are a couple quirks. It takes about 45 seconds to find all the beacons in range. I have had this under-report beacons in a multiple burial but never give a false positive. Throwing the beacon in to the mis-named analog mode (I think of it as "tracker" mode) I was able to quickly find the missing beacons. The beacon can get confused if you move to quickly during acquisition. You need to practice with this beacon. If you are willing to it pretty much rocks. More information and less thought then my old Tracker.
