great replacement

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Ski Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Ski Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 4, 2009

This jacket was intended to replace an Arcteryx softshell that I've completely worn out. Instead, it has effectively replaced both my Arcteryx softshell and hardshell when used for skiing and ski mountaineering. Extremely waterproof, great breatheability, functional pockets, helmet compatible hood, it's well thought out. Only two downsides, the collar is not tall enough to keep the wind off your face, and the lift pass pocket was useless for me(I cut it off).
Very glad I bought this jacket.

user update

Patagonia Rubicon Pant - Men's

Patagonia Rubicon Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 9, 2009

So.. an update. After 200+ days of skiing the pants have seen some wear. The crotch seams have blown out in two places and I've replaced a handwarmer pocket zipper, plus I've sewn the zip pocket back on. The fabric still looks great and has worn well but Patagonia (I hope you're reading) should use a stronger thread.

Not much good to say

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 1 November 8, 2008

These are the worst shoes I've tried. My first pair had the soles wear out in 2 weeks, the replacements lasted 3. Now I'm running on a pair of La Sportiva's that are less expensive but are way better quality. I admit that I'm tough on gear, footwear in particular, but my previous shoes all lasted at least a few months. On the plus side, the lacing system works well and the shoes dry quickly. Overall, a very disappointing shoe.

Icebreaker Icebreaker GT180 Chase Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Icebreaker Icebreaker GT180 Chase Zip Top - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 November 8, 2008

This shirt is outstanding!!! Icebreaker wicks moisture better than anything I've seen! You can actually see it work. I've worn it trail running on rainy days, and skiing in all conditions and I can't find anything but good things to say about it. Well, maybe one thing. The sleeves fit a little loose at the wrists but that's minor. Don't know what I'm going to do with all my polypro shirts now.

Black Diamond Legend Glove

Black Diamond Legend Glove

Best gloves in my fleet. Warm in all conditions, good dexterity, sturdy leather palms and fingers. I've used them skiing and ice climbing and they've served me well.

Black Diamond Mercury Mitten

Black Diamond Mercury Mitten

Rating for this product: 5 November 8, 2008

These mitts are toasty!! I don't often need to use them because I use my Legends unless it gets REALLY cold. When it does get that cold, these are the answer!!! I used them the first time ice climbing and bought my girlfriend a pair on the drive home. She wears them for everything now. Gotta say, hers are white and grey and look great.

good and bad

Icebreaker Glove Liner

Icebreaker Glove Liner

Rating for this product: 3 November 8, 2008

Like the gloves. Warm and great for wicking moisture. A solid liner glove or a good trail running glove for cold, wet days. On the down side, the stitching blew within a week of use. Miles.

Methodical feedback

Black Diamond Method Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Black Diamond Method Alpine Touring Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 November 7, 2008

Great boot to ski, both on and off piste. Nice and rigid, easily steer my Zealots in all conditions. Work well in both Fritschi bindings and Dynafit. With a little adjustment, the forward lean is good and aggressive. On the down side, the buckles have not stood up well to the wear and tear I've put them through catskiing and ski mountaineering so far. The outsoles are very soft (should have gone with Vibram), and the toeboxes are quite tight. Overall, I'm glad I bought these boots but I'm looking forward to seeing some improvements for next season's boots.

Awesome piece of kit!!

Black Diamond Anarchist with Avalung Winter Pack - 1953-2563 cu in

Black Diamond Anarchist with Avalung Winter Pack - 1953-2563 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 November 7, 2008

Love this pack. Packs small enough for day trips or a day of patrolling but as a minimalist, I can cram enough gear into it for a three day tour! The avvy tool pocket is ingeniously designed to allow easy access to the gear you need right away. Side zipper pocket gives easy access to skins. Ski sling design is awesome, even for fat skis, although sometimes a little wobbly when doing any seriously climbing. Love having the integrated Avalung as it's so much more convenient and comfortable than the stand alone Avalungs. Only thing I'd do to improve this pack is put a pocket on the waistbelt.
Enjoy,
Miles.

Patagonia Rubicon pant

Patagonia Rubicon Pant - Men's

Patagonia Rubicon Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 28, 2008

So here's the dilemma... These pants are such a great product that I can't help but rave about them, but if I let too many people how good they are, everyone will get them! As a pro patroller and backcountry skier who's very hard on my gear, these pants are proving to be bulletproof! Rugged construction and super durable fabric has allowed these pants to stand up to the wear and tear of patrolling on Blackcomb and touring on Coast Mountains. As a guy with a thermostat set on high, I've found the vents on these pants to be very effective and easy to use. The handwarmer pockets also do a great job of venting. Once the vents are closed, however, the Rubicons are plenty warm to drop into waist deep pow or stand around camp in subzero temps. The cargo pocket on the legs have enough space to carry enough food for a days touring or can carry whatever you need for charging the steeps in the resort. Last but not least, they look great. Stylish cut and comfortable fit ensure that these pants have taken the place of three other ski pants in my wardrobe. Enough said. I'm a happy customer an dexpect to be using the Rubicons for a long time to come.
