I run. A lot. I avoid road running like the plague and try to get my miles in on trails. When I'm not running, I hike and backpack. The Porkies and the IAT are my top picks for backpacking close to home. I've been rock climbing for about two year. I love snowboarding and hiking up saves on lift tickets.

The North Face Shrapnel Vest - Men's

The North Face Shrapnel Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 January 2, 2012

The Shrapnel vest is a good idea: make a down vest without a center zip. I really like mine and the Banana yellow adds some cheer to my jacket collection. I would buy it again, but I wish they would tweak the design a bit.

The front pocket is connected and lined with brushed tricot. The collar has the same lining. The shell is fairly durable and has yet to rip despite several trips through large briar patches. It sheds gentle rain, giving you plenty of time to dig out your rain shell. The hem rises at the sides and drops in the front and rear for added mobility. The side zips top out about an inch below the arm holes and have 2 zippers each so you can fine-tune the amount of venting. On the right shoulder, the embroidery reads "CA-94577." It's the zip code for TNF's headquarters.

Now for the downsides. First, the zip at the neck is not even a quarter zip. It is just long enough for you to fit the vest over your head, so the only way to really dump heat is to use the side zips. If that zipper went down another 4 inches, this vest would get 4 stars. My other caveat is the cut of the vest. The chest and shoulders are great. The armholes are perfect and the length is just fine. However, the lower half of the vest is too baggy. If you've got a bit of a beer belly, you'll be fine. But for fit people, the bottom of the vest is going to hang loose. With the two long side zips, they could have given this a slight taper from shoulder to waist and had a really awesome vest.

Arbor Icon T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 January 2, 2012

Ok, so that was a bad pun, but this is a good shirt. It is organic cotton and really soft without being paper thin. The sleeves are a bit longer than some T-shirts, coming most of the way down to the elbow. Medium fits my 5'8" 155# brother.

DC Viking T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 2, 2012

That's the kicka$$ Norse symbol on this shirt. You could get into it being a sign of Odin and the varied theories regarding its original meaning, but this isn't a mythology class. The real point is that this is a comfortable shirt with a really cool design. The fabric is soft and the print is of good quality. At 6' 165# the medium fits me well.

Niche

Skullcandy Asym Earbud Headphone

Skullcandy Asym Earbud Headphone

Rating for this product: 4 February 5, 2011

The Asyms fill a niche and fill it well, but aren't perfect. I got them to replace my stolen Titans. First, the good news: the audio quality is equal. They're plenty loud and have better bass than the Titans. They do fit really well under hats and helmets. Fiddle with them a bit to find what angle is most comfortable and once you find it, you'll hardly feel them in you ear. The cord loop over the ear is similarly comfortable and low profile. Once they're in, the Asyms won't come out unless you take them out, no falling out on their own.

The bad: the cord is shorter and less sturdy than the Titan cord, but it is more flexible. There is no inline volume control which I really like, but the cord does lie nice and flat.

Bottom line: pretty close to Titans, but with much better bud design. Add a longer cord and inline volume control and they get 5 stars.

Black Diamond Venom Hammer

September 23, 2010

I'm 5 ft 11 in and I use a 65 or 70. In general, you want an ice axe that, when you hold it at your side with your arm straight, stops a little bit above your ankle. If you plan on going up steep slopes, you'll want the axe to be a few cm shorter than that. This only applies if you're going to use the axe as a cane.

If you plan on using it on very steep slopes where you're going to swing it over your head, you'll want a significantly shorter tool. The standard length for technical tools is closer to 50 cm. If that's what you plan on doing, a 57 cm Venom might serve you pretty well.

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe - Men's

La Sportiva Fireblade Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 May 27, 2009

I got the Fireblades to fill the gap between my backpacking boots and road runners. So far, they've been an excellent choice. The fit is true to size and quite comfortable. The sole is stiff, but still did fine for some sub-seven pace trail runs. They feel fast and look good, but beware, the orange is pretty bright. Sticky rubber on the outsole gripped wet rock and roots with ease. They'll performed admirably in some light scrambling. More to come later on performance with a heavier pack and on low 5 climbing.

Rating for this product: 5 May 14, 2009

The Baker looks awesome and gets the job done. No goggle gap with my Dragon DX's. There aren't any vents (I like the look) but the foam and fabric do a great job of dispersing heat. It's technically not a helmet, but I took some hard falls on ice patches with it and am no worse for the wear.

Black Diamond Sphynx Backpack - 1953-2563 cu in

You're correct that the D rings are the attachment points. The easiest thing to do would be to us a couple lengths of paracord, run them through the crampons and tie the ends off in the D rings. However, if you're going high enough that you won't want to take your gloves off, then just use webbing. Tie one end of the webbing into one D ring, run it through the crampons, go through the other D ring, and buckle it.

It can be done, but I've always avoided using the integrated stuff sacks in jackets. You increase the chances of tearing a seam by stuffing a jacket into one of its own pockets. For $6, go buy yourself a Granite Gear stuff sack. It's light, strong, and will be a much better choice than the integrated pocket.

Burton Board Sack

Rating for this product: 5 May 1, 2009

This bag rocks! The neon camo graphic adds a little understated style. The hideaway straps are simple and easy. The bag is durable and has plenty of space. My 166 holds a fully-mounted 155 com board, one pair of boots, helmet, gloves, jacket, pants, and has room for a second pair of boots. It could easily hold two boards if one were unmounted and maybe even 2 mounted ones in a pinch.

Works for me

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

I started doing some winter mountaineering this year and the Sabretooth's have been excellent. Even my idiocy was thwarted by the Sabretooths, making them as close to idiot proof as you can get. The adjustable tension knob on the rear bail is really great for locking them down and fine tuning the fit.

The little "half points" behind the frontpoints were great for higher angled snow and increased stability. They are pretty light and were great on the snow fields as well as New England ice.

Go-to winter jacket

Mountain Hardwear Torch Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Torch Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

I bought the Torch to replace a stolen Alchemy and I'm really impressed with it. It's much thinner than the Alchemy, but don't worry, you warm up as soon as you start moving. As you heat up, you can dump heat with the pit zips or the hand pockets (I prefer to use the pockets). The breathability and waterproofing are both excellent. I've used mine for everything from rainy fall hikes on the Maine coast to cross country skiing to snowshoeing to a winter summit of mount Washington. It exceeded my expectations in all of these. On a backcountry snowboarding trip, I opened up all the venting on the way up, then zipped up, popped my ipod into the chest pocket (there are 3 internal headphone ports) and rocked out on the way down.

Features I really like are the hand pockets and the hood. The pockets are mesh backed so that you can use em as vents, they run from just above the hem all the way to the shoulder, and the zippers are long and mounted high up for easy access. The hood stays out of the way with the stiffened brim and the scooped sides don't cut into your peripheral vision. The combined drawcord goes 1/2 way around the front, then turns 90 degrees and goes straight back. It's easy and simple and doesn't clutter up the jacket.

Fit: I'm 5'10" and 145lbs. The medium fits me well. It's cut a bit shorter than other jackets to allow you to wear it with a harness, but other than that is pretty much standard MH sizing. Athletic cut. It seems to have a bit of extra room in the chest, but that's probably due to my being skinny.

Running shirt

The North Face Impulse 1/4-Zip Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Impulse 1/4-Zip Shirt - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 10, 2009

The Impulse was my main running shirt this winter. The thumb loops were great for days that were almost cold enough for gloves, but not quite. I stashed my ID in the zip pocket and cruised the trails.

It also is a great baselayer. The thumb holes kept the shirt in place during layer adjustments and added a little extra warmth to gloves. It feels smooth against skin and all the seams are flat (read: no chafing). The Impulse runs small, for TNF. I'm 5'10" 145lbs and the medium is perfect.

I must admit, TNF has made some good gear in the Summit Series and Flight Series lines. I hadn't bought any North Face stuff since the Denali became the one article of clothing that every high school girl had to have.

Finally got me a puffy

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 26, 2009

A long time ago, I determined that I was never getting a down jacket because I didn't want to look ridiculous. However, when I took up winter mountaineering, I quickly realized that sitting around camp after dark gets pretty chilly, even with a few layers of polar tec and a shell or two. So, I broke down and borrowed an old 500 loft EMS puffy from the outing club. I was sold. After shopping around a lot, I settled on the Sub Zero (the hood was a big selling point).

This jacket has exceeded my expectations in every way. I took it up Mt. Washington in February and was toasty warm for our summit lunch break. Well, my arms and torso were warm, my exposed face and hands nearly froze. I was able to wear the hood over my helmet and not feel like the jacket was getting pulled up. The internal mesh water bottle pocket is sized to hold a nalgene perfectly and the intrnal zip pocket is great for storing the included stuff sack. The hand pockets have a brushed lining and are totally inside the insulation to maximize warmth. I like the reinforced material (Conduit SL) on the shoulders, neck, and arms, but wish they used the nylon instead of Conduit on the inside of the collar.

I'm 5'10" and about 145# and the medium fits just right. I can zip off the hood and wear it with just a tee shirt underneath when I'm going to class or put the hood on and layer it over a baselayer, vest, fleece and softshell when I need to.

With this jacket, I'm glad I finally made the switch to down jackets. A really excellent purchase.

CAMP USA Rock Star Helmet

March 8, 2009

No. You could superglue some clips onto it and make an attachment system by yourself. If that's not your cup of tea, check out the CAMP High Star. It's the same as the Rock Star but it has elastic cord headlamp holders in the front and back plus 4 small holes for ventilation.

Mountain Hardwear Direttissima Backpack - 2750-3500cu in

February 23, 2009

How light to you like to go and which size were you thinking of getting? If you go no tent and make an effort to eliminate all unnecessary stuff, you should be able to do it. Personally, I'd go for something a bit bigger.

DAKINE Heli Pro 20L Winter Pack - 1200cu in

February 23, 2009

It'll be slightly larger and the straps won't be as comfortable as the women's version. You should be OK though. If it doesn't work, send it back.

Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Down Parka - Men's

February 17, 2009

I've found that Mountain Hardwear jackets fit a little baggy for the size, but in this case that would be good, so you could layer a bunch of stuff underneath it.*****************************However, they generally run a bit short in length and sleeves.

The North Face Venture Jacket - Men's

February 11, 2009

It should get pretty small and if it doesn't come with a suitable stuff sack, you can get an excellent one from granite gear for about six bucks. 25 psi= 25 pounds per square inch. It's a pressure rating. 25 is considered "fully waterproof". Ks of waterproofing is the number of millimeters of rainfall that the jacket could take in a 24 hour period before soaking through. The jackets that are selling for $100 are the '09 model. The discounted ones (discontinued colors) are all '08. Not much difference except color and $30.

Mountain Hardwear Typhoon Jacket - Men's

February 11, 2009

Based on your height, I would go with a large. It may be a little roomy but the sleeve length should be right on. Hope this helps!*************I'm 5'9" 140 and I can wear the medium with a skintight baselayer, thin softshell vest, and fleece underneath. However, I can't fit anything else under it and it feels kinda packed. You definitely want a large. It has an athletic cut so you won't swim in it.

Mountain Hardwear Transition Zip T - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Transition Zip T - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 11, 2009

I love my transition. Got it for $70 and it was worth every penny. Pair it up with a light soft shell and nothing's going to get through. The zipper seams used to bother me a bit but I don't notice them any more. Blocks wind like none other. Great for nordic skiing or winter running. Slim fit. I'm 5'9" 140 and a the medium is kinda tight. The stretch panels at the sides, bottom, and sleeves are a nice touch. Really great garment.

SteepandCheap.com Check Your SAC T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 13, 2009

I love this shirt! It's offensive(ish) and I get funny looks when I wear it. Whenever someone gets mad at me for wearing it, I explain what SAC is and invariably the person laughs and tells me they'll check it out. Plus, the technical weave makes it a decent workout shirt.

The North Face Impulse 1/2 Zip Hooded Pullover - Long Sleeve - Men's

The North Face Impulse 1/2 Zip Hooded Pullover - Long Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 18, 2008

Great baselayer. I use it alone for cold runs and it's perfect. The zip neck dumps heat and you can unzip the shoulder pocket to add a little extra venting. It wicks really well and blocks wind pretty well. The thumb slits in the cuff are great for keeping it in place wile layering or just keeping your hands a little bit warmer. Fit: I'm 5'9" 140 lbs and a medium fits perfectly.

686 Acc Syndicate Insulated Jacket - Men's

Burton Poacher Jacket - Men's

December 10, 2008

Looks sick. Some pretty sweet graphics on some versions and some classy, monochrome schemes. The waterproofing and breathability ratings are kinda low, but 5k should be enough for mellow stuff. Read the reviews to get a better picture.
