great jacket

Arc'teryx Atom LT Jacket - Women's

Arc'teryx Atom LT Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 December 1, 2010

The fit is perfect- tailoured enough to look good when wearing on its own and to wear under a shell, but still enough room for additional layers underneath. The cuffs are also great- made from elasticized material that stops any cold air from seeping in when raising your arms.
Very warm. Down to -5C or so, I wear it around without a shell and am happy. For colder/wetter conditions, my gore tex shell comes on top. And so light! People constantly wonder how something so thin and light is warm, but somehow it is. It is nice to wear something that doesn't look or feel bulky but still be warm.
Breathability seems good, but haven't yet tested it under extreme conditions ie ice climbing. Water resistant against light rain.
I choose the non-hooded version because I planned to wear it under a shell during the winter anyway, in which case an additional hood would just be irritating. Also because I read that the hood was (unusual for arcteryx) ill-fitting.
I read that there is a drawcord on the atom lt hoody- this would be a nice improvement to the atom lt.

Arc'teryx Atom LT Jacket - Women's

December 1, 2010

I use a Mountain Hardwear GTX 2.5- has a gore tex performance shell+ a yeti fleece lining over the back, shoulders and neck. The model is a few seasons old, but you might be able to find one as a clearance item somewhere. It is a great jacket by itself. Good for moderately cold weather by itself, due to the presence of the fleece liner, allowing to hold a bit of extra heat and it is fantastic when really cold when paired with insulating layer such as the atom lt. It also has a great hood.

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra Trail Running Shoe - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2009

I have 4 pairs of these shoes. I buy them every year. Why change a good thing? Light, comfortable and fantastic treads... Because of the light mesh, they are a bit cold for use in the winter(wear more socks)... My only point of irritation are the laces. Once they break, lacing becomes a problem... There are no replacement sets due to their sewn in nature and the fact that the laces are covered in some sort of slippery material makes knot tieing difficult. But from show function, perfect.

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero SL Hooded Down Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 March 11, 2009

This is my first down jacket. I read a lot of reviews before deciding to buy this jacket. Expensive but worth the money. Very, very warm and comfy. I wore it when I was in the Himalayas... Slept with it on, wore it whenever I wasnt moving. I was grateful to have it! It is reasonably light and small, so it doesn't take up too much space/weight in a pack.

good jacket

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Jacket - Women's

Mountain Hardwear Synchro Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 March 11, 2009

For days when it isnt too cold (down to -5C), it works well without any layering underneath. For a high impact activity like ice climbing, add a few long underwear shirts and everything is perfect (i have worn it like at -20C like this). I have also worn it skiing, layered with a mountain hardwear monkey fleece underneath. I was comfortably warm, but looked like (and felt) a bit like a marshmellow(not much room under for layering). In this situation, a hard shell would be better, but the softshell was good. In terms of breathability- A plus. In terms of waterproofness, also very good. Sheds light rain, snow-wet snow- very well... There is also a version with a hood. I think this would be a nice addition.

The North Face Venture Jacket - Women's

The North Face Venture Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 March 11, 2009

I got this jacket after reading both good and bad reviews, but thought for the (reasonable) price, ok... If you are sitting still and not moving, the jacket keeps you dry. However, even with a bit of activity(biking) combined with hard rain means you are soaked inside. Yuck. 0 breathability. So much for hyvent. I became so frustrated with this jacket I bought a Mountain Hardwear Typhoon... Gore Tex is the real deal...
