Old Town Vapor 10 Kayak

April 26, 2010

I don't recommend this boat, unless you simply can't afford anything else. Anyway, paddles vary a lot.
Get the lightest one you can afford, and make sure the length is right for you. I'm 6'0 and use a 240 (Bending Branches Whisper). My wife is shorter and uses a 230. I chose mine because the paddle shape gives me more power per stroke that a standard oval.
Get a two piece, and look for cupped drip rings, rather than symmetrical. They shed better from the middle, and stop more water from coming up the shaft.
Get a good set of gloves, too, like the NRS Hydroskins Titanium.

Excellent Boat

Wilderness Systems Pungo 100 Kayak

Wilderness Systems Pungo 100 Kayak

Rating for this product: 5 April 26, 2010

Wilderness Systems makes some of the best poly boats on the market. Same weight as cheaper flimsy boats like the Old Town Vapor (Still baffled at that), nice cam lock dry hatch, and the boat tracks nicely for a 10', but still turns well.Nice seat with multiple one handed adjustments, and the hull and deck design make it sit lower to the water without excess draft. Has an optional Dashboard that is really nice.

Not saving any money

Old Town Vapor 10 Kayak

Old Town Vapor 10 Kayak

Rating for this product: 1 April 26, 2010

Pros: Price, Paddle rest
Cons: Everything else.
This boat was designed for beginners with no knowledge of poly kayaks. It's flimsy, tracks poorly, and doesn't have a dry hatch. (The available rear cover is not water tight)We did a direct comparison at a Kayak Demo, and the price just doesn't make up for everything this boat is lacking. They designed it to be more stable getting in and out, but once you become experienced with kayaking, you will realize they left out a lot. You can't even reach the cup holder.Do yourself a favor and get a Wilderness Systems Pungo 100, instead. The two boats are the same weight, yet the Pungo is much more sturdy and solid, tracks better but still turns well, and has an easy to use dry hatch. The Pungo comes with deck rigging for gear, and has a seat that not only adjust back angle, but back height, all with one hand. Well worth the extra money. Your really do get what you pay for here.

Therm-a-Rest Trail Pro Sleeping Pad

Therm-a-Rest Trail Pro Sleeping Pad

Rating for this product: 5 April 26, 2010

After some research on comfort vs. weight, we tested this in the store on a concrete floor.
Without over inflating, I let it equalize on the store floor. I rested my hand on it and it went right through, but when I put my entire body on it, the air shifted and adjusted, and it was VERY comfortable, even sideways. Hip soreness has always kept me from a good nights sleep when camping. I could feel no direct pressure on my hips, even on that concrete. This pad is twice as thick as our old pads, yet a fraction of the weight. It actually rolls up smaller than they did.
Perfect balance of weight, size, and comfort.

Don't Bother

Old Town Vapor 10 XT Kayak

Old Town Vapor 10 XT Kayak

Rating for this product: 1 April 9, 2010

We attended a Kayak demo and this was one of the Kayaks we tried. Being new, with a nicer seat and better styling, we thought maybe Old Town finally learned how to make a decent Kayak. Nope.
The boat is VERY flimsy, and overall poor quality. Cupholder is too far forward to be usable, and the boat is just too tall and unstable.
We also looked at the Wilderness Systems Pungo 100, and there is NO comparison. MUCH better quality, solid build for the exact same weight, and is much better in the water. The rear storage hatch is NOT water tight, unlike the Pungos cam lock sealed lid.
The Pungo is worth every extra penny over this piece of junk.
