These shoes kept my kids feet dry and fairly warm, which is a lot considering the amount of time spent in the stream rather than on the crossings.

Tubbs Wilderness Series Snowshoe - Women's

November 15, 2009

This would be a great all'rounder for snowshoeing. I have always felt that getting a little bit longer snowshoe is the better choice for more versatility. Longer is going to give you more options in the backcountry and in deeper snow. The main reason to get something a little smaller is if you're going to get into snowshoe running, but it is still possible on longer shoes.
Hope that helps.

Outdoor Research Crocodiles Gaiter - Women's

November 15, 2009

These gators are fantastic! They're completely waterproof. My wife and I both have croc's and we hike in all four seasons in them. My wife has personally had her leg submerged up to about 3 or 4 inches below the top of the gator for about a minute and she was bone dry underneath. The only thing these don't hold up to are snags on crampons, but they repaired very easily.
Hope that helps.

Salomon XT Wings GTX Trail Running Shoe - Men's

November 15, 2009

Hey Erfan,

The XA Pro's definitely have more of a firm sole. XT Wings are much more pliable and should give you a little bit more of a plush ride. You might want to be a little careful, or just take notice of the lacing system. I use to wear these and had mass problems with the laces wearing through after only a couple longish runs. Hopefully they have fixed the problem. Absolutely comfortable shoes none-the-less.
Hope that helps.

Burton Entourage Jacket - Men's

November 15, 2009

Hey Sean,

You're right on the edge of both sizes. It really depends on how you like your jackets to fit. If you like them on the snug side, or like a more athletic fit then I'd go with the L. I prefer this type of jacket to have a little room so with that I'd go with an XL. They do fit really true to size according to the chart up-top.
Hope that helps.

This jacket is okay as far as durbility. Paclite isn't the most durable stuff though, as it is really meant for compactability. It is incredibly waterproof though. If you're wanting something with a lot more durability then check out either a GoreTex Performance or Pro shell.

Osprey Packs Variant 52 Backpack - 3000-3400cu in

October 26, 2009

Hey Chris,

If you're looking to compartmentalize more in terms of your sleeping bag or other gear you'd want to go with the Aether 70. The Variant series doesn't do an individual compartment.....it's pretty much a tube with some great tool attachments on the outside. There are also a few pockets on the outside. Speaking with both Backcountry.com and Osprey about the Variant it's meant more for technical type activities instead of backpacking. The Aether is quite a bit bigger which would be nice for a multi-use pack. With that said, I love my Variant! They're incredibly comfortable, move well with you and don't feel bulky at all when they're loaded down and strapped on. Plus they still have the cool whistle on them just in case you run into some Ligers on the trail:)
Hope that helps!

Amazing Tonal Qualities!

Nixon Wire Mic Headphone

Nixon Wire Mic Headphone

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

I've had loads of problems with headphones that sit in your ear. Most of them wiggle loose and fall out or they sit funny in my ears and end up hurting. My $200 Shure's are the worst of all as far as fit but "WERE" the best for sound. These Nixon's have just passed those up. In fact my Shure's to a quick trip to the trash once I got these in my lobes. The sound in them is truly amazing! They have much richer high tones and much deeper bass tones. It just sounds like a much more full sound effect. They work perfect with any generation of iPhone too which is a plus. They're definitely worth the dough!!!

Freestyle USA Nomad Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

So I've only had this watch for a couple of weeks and need more time with it but so far it has been great. I've taken it on some longer hikes with a lot of vert and it tracks altitude extremely well. Once everything is set up it seems easier to use than my Suunto Core but feels beefier. I was a little hesitant because of the price but I am getting to be very pleasantly surprised. I don't have a single complaint thus far but I'll write more when I've used it for 6 months to a year.

Cloudveil Enclosure Parka - Boys'

Cloudveil Enclosure Parka - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

I picked this up for my little boy, who hates to wear coats! We had to trick him and tell him it was a Thomas coat but now he loves it. It's got a great amount of barrier against the wind. It's really easy to zip up which is a plus because a lot of kids jackets have zipper troubles. There are cool little stretchy fleece gators that hold tight against the wrists so nothing gets in. Just a great little jacket and well worth the money. Sizing is right on with the size chart provided. Also, the colors are a great match for the pictures above.

Nice All Round Boots

La Sportiva Glacier EVO Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Glacier EVO Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

I picked these up as an all 'round, all purpose boot. They are set up very well with Perwanger leather which is the best stuff in my opinion. The have an incredibly durable sole with plenty of traction. I don't know that I would get into much terrain needing crampons with them but they'll do fine for everything else. They fit as La Sportiva's typically do so they're a little narrow and true to size in the length. They come fairly stiff soled but pretty comfy straight out of the box. They are a little tricky getting use to the lacing just down from the ankle flex point but once you get use to it there isn't a problem.

Good Fit......IF!

Sole Ed Viesturs Signature Edition Footbed

Sole Ed Viesturs Signature Edition Footbed

Rating for this product: 4 October 25, 2009

I picked these up for a little better fit in my Nepal Evo's. They do give you a more comfortable, more custom fit feeling. The only downside I have is that, especially in the heel, they take up too much room. Especially in my Nepal Evo's, as the heel sinks back in quite far, these didn't work. I like the idea and the feel of them so I stuck them in my Glacier Evo's for general use and they're perfect. My advice is just to be sure you have the room in your boots and especially in the heel region. Great concept though.

CamelBak Ergo Hydrolock

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This is a great concept and something to add to any bladder without a locking mechanism. Bite valves tend to wear out and leak over time. Adding this thing eliminates that problem. If you have a "little one" going around chomping on everything it can do wonders for saving you from a wet shirt and less water than you wanted when you get to your destination.

To keep this pretty simple: I really like these as an energy alternative to food occasionally. The go down easily and don't upset my stomach. The trouble is I like the taste so I can tend to eat them faster than I should. The only complaint is the caffeine. I don't drink anything caffeinated pretty much ever so when I got these I thought I'd get a punch......nothin'. prAna Thresher Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This is an extremely rugged pair of pants! The material is much stiffer than I first thought but they're breaking in nicely and have become extremely comfortable. I don't know that I would do anything but hike or alpine climbing in them as they don't seem to move that freely with you but they're bomb proof so they should be around for a long time. The fit is similar to everything else from prAna so they run true to size according to the sizing chart provided. They do seem to be well proportioned between the size of the waist and the length of the inseam. All in all a really great pant for all 'round use.

Mountain House Oriental Style Spicy Chicken - 2 Serving Entree

Rating for this product: 4 October 25, 2009

This was really quite a descent meal. Everything cooks up nicely and there is a great amount of flavor that comes out in the food. My only complaint is that the chicken doesn't rehydrate that well. For me it's pretty typical with most dehydrated meats. I wouldn't cook it for Thanksgiving but it was great in the BC.

Bacon 'n' Eggs

Mountain House Scrambled Eggs w/ Bacon - Breakfast Entree

Mountain House Scrambled Eggs w/ Bacon - Breakfast Entree

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This was one of our favorites for breakfast. The eggs aren't bad but it's not like you're willing to pack in fresh eggs either. The key with them is to give them ample time to cook and then drain the excess water. The bacon turned out great! All in all this was a really good meal and one we'll mark as a keeper.

Descent If You're Hungry

AlpineAire Wild Tyme Turkey

AlpineAire Wild Tyme Turkey

Rating for this product: 3 October 25, 2009

This meal wasn't the best but we were really hungry so it wasn't that bad. We let it cook just a little longer to make sure the turkey completely rehydrated but it still wasn't quite there. The turkey tastes pretty dehydrated in the texture, but again it's not too bad and especially being super hungry it's okay.

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This is really an easy meal to prepare. We did let it cook an extra couple of minutes just for the noodles sake but it prepares really well. 2 servings really is for 2 people but we may bring extra because the sauce was very good and the mushrooms turned out nice!

Mountain House Raspberry Crumble

Mountain House Raspberry Crumble

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This was a complete hit with our little camp. It prepares very easily and serves plenty, although 3 of us ate all of it. It has a great texture, real berry's and just a great combination of raspberry's and chocolate. We'll use this one again, probably on every trip we do. We may bring an extra just so we don't run out though....it's really that good!

Great Desert, Maybe not Cobbler

AlpineAire Apple Blueberry Fruit Cobbler

AlpineAire Apple Blueberry Fruit Cobbler

Rating for this product: 4 October 25, 2009

Okay so maybe I was just incredibly hungry but after an 18 hour day of climbing and hiking this was a welcome treat. We added slightly less water than it called for and by the time we got around to it the instructions seemed too complicated so we just cooked it, mixed it up and ate. In my opinion it had good flavor and good texture. Definitely worth the money and the effort to prepare it. The serving size says 2 but we fed 3 people with 1 package and it was plenty.

Nuun Nuun Tube - 8 Pack

Nuun Nuun Tube - 8 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This is definitely a really good way to go in the hydration department. My theory is that we can't get all we need from regular foods/water so we have to take some supplements if we're trying to perform. Nuun is very easy on the stomach and with a descent taste it makes it much easier to remember to keep pounding fluids. I have only tried lemon-lime but friends say that tri-berry is really good as well.

I picked these up for my wife and she really liked them initially. When she tried them on we realized that they weren't meant for her body type. My wife has nice curves and these shorts didn't fit that well for her. They were very cute and the material seemed quite nice, durable and non-abrasive. Too bad they didn't fit.

Mountain Hardwear Shasta Short - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

My wife loves these shorts! I picked them up for her initially for just a nice hiking short but she wears them everywhere. They seem to be a little snug fitting all over but they're stretchy so it hasn't been a big deal. The stitching is also very slimming which my wife absolutely loves! In all the hikes we've done this summer, all the time sitting in the dirt with the kids, not once have they held on to a stain at all.

Backcountry.com Overhang Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

These are seriously the most comfortable pants I own! They move extremely well and don't seem to snag on much of anything....so far. The only thing I would change is the waist. The waist is just a little too big for me but I need the length, yet I don't want to wear a belt so for now I'll either wear a belt or deal with droopy drawers. Either way they're my favorite pants in the collection!

Nice Little Guy Hikers

The North Face Hedgehog WP Shoe - Boys'

The North Face Hedgehog WP Shoe - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

These have turned into some really nice little hiking shoes for my two oldest boys. Sizewise they're right on with the sizing chart. The color matches the pictures surprisingly well. Smaller sizes have elastic laces as well as standard laces so you can swap them out. Larger sizes only come with standard laces. The soles last a very, very long time. You do want to be careful when they get close to heat though. The sides of the soles melt pretty easily. They are definitely waterproof.....we're just having to get my youngest use to the fact that waterproof only means that your feet stay dry when the water level is below the top of the shoe:)

Billabong Indication T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

You don't need a lot of words for a boys shirt. My 9 year old thought it was really cool and that was about enough for me. The blue was a bit more of a bright or turquoiseish blue. It hasn't seemed to shrink more than you'd expect from the wash. You've got to be mindful of the sizing though. We got the size the chart recommended but had to return it and bump it up a size. Not a big deal though, for a cool shirt he's willing to wear:)

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

This has been a great shirt for my little guy. It fits almost exactly according to the sizing chart. This one shrank just a little in the wash but no more than you'd expect. I don't know what happened to the lighting but the red color shown above isn't even close. This is a much deeper, less florescent red.

This has become my little boys favorite shirt in his closet. I bought him the which one, which they don't have right now, but it was an accurate picture for colors shown above. Also, the sizing chart is accurate. They don't seem to shrink much when you wash them, but some pretty serious stains have come out of them no problem!

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

I picked these up for some river trips, but they've become my "go to" sandal! They're bomb proof and after a year of use you can barely tell the soles have been walked on. Maybe I'm a little more anal retentive with my gear but they're holding up extremely well. The leather seems to be very waterproof as well. I haven't treated them once and they are still perfect! Well worth the money, they'll last a lot longer than you'll expect!!!

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

I picked these up as a little cover-up short and they're doing the job very well! They are a little bit of a lo-rise but it's not bad at all over a bikini bottom. My wife has used them a ton at the beach as well as in the pool and there hasn't been a single problem with fading. We are a little anal retentive with rinsing out our suits from chlorinated water. They're pretty true to size. The blue shorts are a little lighter blue than in the picture.

Kavu Rally Fest Swim Trunk - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 October 24, 2009

I thought about using these for swim trunks but they seem just a little.....odd. I don't know if it's the tie on the front or how the fly is situated but they just seem a little funky in that region. They move extremely well, dry quickly and don't seem to chafe the skin when you walk in them wet. I'm using them mostly for hikes with more intense river/stream crossings or river travel. They've been nice for that but swimming didn't work that well for me. They're descent for the job and not bad for the price but don't expect a regular swim trunk.

I love these shorts! They fit true to size and as extremely soft so they move very well. They aren't exceptionally long but they are long enough. They fit true to size according to the sizing chart provided. I don't climb in them but I use them for everything else and they're holding up very well. The pockets are fairly deep so misc. garb doesn't fall out easily. I have zero complaints from these shorts. Just a great all'round short!

Really Nice Water Bin

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack

CamelBak Unbottle Hydration Pack

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

There's not a lot to say about this thing. It holds mass amounts of water, seems to be extremely durable and easy to make a pack out of it with Osprey bag straps used as shoulder straps. The bite valve seems to wear out fairly quickly but with the lockable L-valve there haven't been any leakage problems. I looked at this mainly as just a more durable bladder, which it definitely is!

Hydro Photon SteriPEN Adventurer Handheld Ultraviolet Water Purifier w/ Solar Charger

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

I picked this up as a just-in-case gadget. I have now used it a bunch of times and it does it's job......at least I have had any intestinal problems from the fluids I've been drinking. Some reviews say there are loads of problems so maybe I've been lucky but I haven't had a single issue with mine. In my experience they do what they're suppose to and I'm happy with that. I initially bought the model w/o the solar charge but returned it for this one. I heard that people were having issues with the time it took the solar charger to get the battery's up and running but I didn't think so. It only took 2-3 hours from dead to fully charge, but maybe I'm lucky. None-the-less, this is a great addition to the arsenal.

Great 3 Person, Light Tent

Mountain Hardwear Lightpath 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Mountain Hardwear Lightpath 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

This tent really surprised me, especially looking at the bargain of a price! Too many 3 person tents mean you can fit 3 people if you're all okay with spooning. When they said 3 person they really meant it. Me and my two brothers fit just fine, even with a little gear inside. This rig is extremely easy to set up and with using the guyouts there wasn't a drop of water than leaked in during a major summer downpour in the Uinta's. There is 1 small addition that would have been cool. I use a BD lantern but there isn't a clip or strap or anything to hang a lantern from. Other than that this tent is great for what it's meant to do.

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

I have many pair of Lorpen socks and these are definitely my favorite for the summer. I've got 3 pair and put in over 250 miles this year alone in them up in the hills. They're holding up extremely well! These socks in particular are extremely thin and breathe very well. They are also very soft, typical of Merino, so there's not an itchy problem on your feet or legs. Everything from Lorpen fits true to size according to the chart backcountry.com provides.

NRS Hydrosilk Rash Guard - Long-Sleeve - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

These rash guards are extremely durable. The material is holding up very well from some serious grinds in both sand and pools. They fit true to size but they do, as most will, ease up on the tightness factor when they get wet. All in all I would say it's a great buy and something that has been used a ton without a single issue. Just as a note, I do rinse it very well if I use it in a chlorinated pool and I have had any problems with fading.

Nice Small/Basic Pack

CamelBak Hydrobak Hydration Pack - 1.5L

CamelBak Hydrobak Hydration Pack - 1.5L

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

I picked up a few of these for my kids while we do some hiking.....time for the dad to stop being the only camel. These packs are large enough for an adult to wear as a very small pack but they tighten up enough so a pretty young child can use them without a problem. My 3, 6 & 9 year olds do great with theirs. They don't hold a ton of water but they hold plenty for shorter trips or for kids. One nice attachment would be a clip across the sternum. Just as a word to the wise, don't let your kids that are teething get a hold of the bite valve because they don't fair well with sharp little chompers.

Torrential Rain No Problem

Osprey Packs Goat Logo UL Raincover

Osprey Packs Goat Logo UL Raincover

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

I spend a bit of time in the Uinta's this summer with my brothers and as people were high'tailin' it out we were headed in. Needless to say this rain cover came in extremely handy. My pack stayed completely dry and that's saying a lot seeing as how we spent hours and hours in a row, for days, hanging out in the rain. They pack down well but there is plenty of space. You could probably size down a little although I use the Argon 110 from Osprey and there was maybe a little bit of wiggle room. I don't leave home without it:)

Osprey Packs Xenon 85 Backpack - Women's - 4700-5100cu in

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

This is really an absolutely amazing pack! Obviously Osprey is top 'O' the line and this is no exception. I picked it up for my wife and figured it would get some descent use but she's put it through it's paces. The durability has completely met expectations. We did treat the entire outside of the pack with Nikwax which helped a lot! The moldable belt is a very nice feature, makes it extremely comfortable. The venting on the back panel definitely does it's job. One thing we were worried about was the amount of adjustment for her torso. Problem solved.....there is a ton of adjustment. It was a little more dough than some other packs but very well worth it for comfort and quality. We're looking forward to keeping these things running for years to come.

Osprey Packs Xenon 85 Backpack - Women's - 4700-5100cu in

October 11, 2009

Hey Kiki,

They don't make a pack exactly like this with ski carries on it. You would probably want to look at the Variant 52. They are definitely a simpler pack in terms of pocket options but they have more on the exterior of the pack for ski's etc. They are extremely comfortable and bomb proof. I have the old version of the Variant which is the Exposure and it is holding up amazingly well with some seriously rough treatment. I would say it is nearly as comfortable but not quite and also the venting on the back isn't as good as this pack.
Hope that helps.

Backcountry.com Shift Softshell Jacket - Men's

September 25, 2009

It looks a little different than this in person. Where do you feel it looks off? I thought it looked too much like a biker-cut jacket with short torso and long arms. They don't fit that way at all. The torso is definitely longer than it looks. Between this and the Marmot I'd still go with Backcountry. This has a more athletic cut so it doesn't seem as baggy in awkward areas.
Hope that helps.
