What can you really say about a footprint.....they shaped it properly according to the bottom of the tent. They made it with really durable material, and it does its job to protect the bottom of your really amazing tent.

Bombproof Residence

Mountain Hardwear Trango 4 Tent 4-Person 4-Season

Mountain Hardwear Trango 4 Tent 4-Person 4-Season

Rating for this product: 5 August 31, 2011

I think these trango's have been reviewed to death. Mountain Hardware has their ducks in a row, and have for quite some time, with these tents. The 4 has loads of room and can easily fit 4 adults with gear in the vestibules. One major improvement this year was placing the pole for the rainfly top-side instead of underneath. The underneath placement created problems with both the velcro closures as well as the seams when that pole use to rub. This new rig is pretty much as perfect as I can imagine.

Osprey Packs Ace 48 Backpack - Kids' - 2929cu in

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2011

I picked this pack up for my 7 year old and, even though we shouldn't have been, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality, fit, and compressibility. This pack really falls right in line with the rest of the gear made by Osprey. It doesn't necessarily adjust to a huge number of different sized torso's but it adjusts plenty for what you'd need to do with a young'en.

Julbo Coach Sunglasses - Spectron 3+ Lens - Kids'

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2011

Not sure that I can add much more than has already been said. I picked these up for my 7 year old. The lenses make colors incredibly crisp so now the only difficulty is trying to keep the arguing to a minimum on who gets to ware them. They don't slip at all, and they seem much more durable than I expected, as proved by an evening in the dirt up in the Sawtooth's when my little boy "didn't lose them".

Big Agnes Two Track Pad - Mummy

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2011

Not much to say about this pad other than the fact that it really does its job! It is quite thick so you can rest assured knowing you're not going to feel rocks and other debris below you while you sleep, but it also completely rocks in extreme temperatures. A nice feature is that it comes with a small repair kit sewn inside the protective bag this pad comes with.

Toasty Sack

Big Agnes Hahns Peak SL Sleeping Bag: -20 Degree Down

Big Agnes Hahns Peak SL Sleeping Bag: -20 Degree Down

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2011

I've used this a bunch of nights in anything from the minuses to pretty warm degrees. I have had very good luck with this bag. In the coldest conditions I avoided the bivvy sack and this thing beaded moisture well, kept me dry, and kept me warm! In warmer conditions I unzipped and stayed very comfortable. It is quite a thick bag when it is allowed to air out and can be a little difficult to compress, but it seems to compact pretty well. All in all this is a great back, and well worth the money!

Big Agnes Ethel Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Down - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2011

I picket this bag up for my wife because she needed something for very cold conditions, but she absolutely detests mummy bags. This thing did the trick. There is plenty of room inside to avoid the claustrophobia but not so much that it is difficult to heat up. Water seems to bead off pretty well, and definitely better than most down bags, but not well enough to avoid a goretex bivy in the extra moisture nights. All in all this is a very solid bag and one that looks to be around for a really long time!

Happy Down

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

Stoic Luft Down Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2011

I picked this jacket up as a layer under a shell for extreme conditions. That's really what I've used it for and it has done it's job very well. It's puffy enough to keep the wind out, but not so puffy to make you up your shell size by 3x. Kind of a happy medium. Sizing seems to be pretty much right on with what you'd normally wear. Definitely worth the dough, especially being as durable as this jackets appears to be.

Berghaus Attrition Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2011

I got this shell for mountaineering and to be used as a shell that will go the rounds with the elements. I was very impressed with the fit, material, and the many qualities it holds. The hood fits over climbing or ski helmets without a problem. The spindrift collar does its job. One of the best things is the fact that it can take a huge beating and hasn't torn, ripped, and still beads water like the day I bought it! Really nice find!

El Naturalista Iroko N653 Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2011

I have fallen in love with El Naturalista shoes! These fall right in line with the rest of my collection. The leather is full grain and very supple. The soles are flexible enough, but not overly soft. They seem to fit very snug all the way about half way up the ankle. One word of caution is that you might want to look at a half size larger than normal. Really nice find for a pair of anywhere shoes!

Great Jacket!

Dale of Norway Totten Jacket - Men's

Dale of Norway Totten Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 30, 2011

I was a little skeptical buying this jacket until I saw it in person. Thought it would be much thinner than it was but it is actually incredibly thick, and hugs your entire upper body. There are very few jackets that I have been as pleased with for a lot of reasons: Very durable, handles washing incredibly well especially for wool, keeps the cold out yet breathes well, and it looks totally non-standard. You won't see a million of these walking around! I was scared to death that washing it was going to cause major problems, but washing with nikwax wool wash on the wool setting and laying it flat to dry did the trick. It didn't shrink, looked brand new, and completely seemed ready to roll. One word of caution is that this jackets cut is very athletic so you may consider bumping up a size if you prefer your jackets to have plenty of room.

Dale of Norway Roaldshorn Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 15, 2010

I picked up this vest and absolutely love it!!! The windstopper keeps out even whipping wind and the wool weave outer works well with light rain/snow. The only interesting thing was the sizing. I got both this vest and the Totten jacket. This vest does have snug armholes but I found that the size large body portion fit like a normal large. The armholes could use a little extra room but aside from that sizing seemed very true to size for me. This thing is definitely worth the money, and there aren't 3 million of them around town!

Tubbs Wilderness Series Snowshoe - Women's

November 15, 2009

This would be a great all'rounder for snowshoeing. I have always felt that getting a little bit longer snowshoe is the better choice for more versatility. Longer is going to give you more options in the backcountry and in deeper snow. The main reason to get something a little smaller is if you're going to get into snowshoe running, but it is still possible on longer shoes.

Osprey Packs Variant 52 Backpack - 2990-3356cu in

October 26, 2009

Hey Chris,

If you're looking to compartmentalize more in terms of your sleeping bag or other gear you'd want to go with the Aether 70. The Variant series doesn't do an individual compartment.....it's pretty much a tube with some great tool attachments on the outside. There are also a few pockets on the outside. Speaking with both Backcountry.com and Osprey about the Variant it's meant more for technical type activities instead of backpacking. The Aether is quite a bit bigger which would be nice for a multi-use pack. With that said, I love my Variant! They're incredibly comfortable, move well with you and don't feel bulky at all when they're loaded down and strapped on. Plus they still have the cool whistle on them just in case you run into some Ligers on the trail:)
Hope that helps!

Amazing Tonal Qualities!

Nixon Wire Mic Headphones

Nixon Wire Mic Headphones

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

I've had loads of problems with headphones that sit in your ear. Most of them wiggle loose and fall out or they sit funny in my ears and end up hurting. My $200 Shure's are the worst of all as far as fit but "WERE" the best for sound. These Nixon's have just passed those up. In fact my Shure's to a quick trip to the trash once I got these in my lobes. The sound in them is truly amazing! They have much richer high tones and much deeper bass tones. It just sounds like a much more full sound effect. They work perfect with any generation of iPhone too which is a plus. They're definitely worth the dough!!!

Great So Far!

Freestyle USA Nomad Altimeter Watch

Freestyle USA Nomad Altimeter Watch

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

So I've only had this watch for a couple of weeks and need more time with it but so far it has been great. I've taken it on some longer hikes with a lot of vert and it tracks altitude extremely well. Once everything is set up it seems easier to use than my Suunto Core but feels beefier. I was a little hesitant because of the price but I am getting to be very pleasantly surprised. I don't have a single complaint thus far but I'll write more when I've used it for 6 months to a year.

Really Cool Jacket

Cloudveil Enclosure Parka - Boys'

Cloudveil Enclosure Parka - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

I picked this up for my little boy, who hates to wear coats! We had to trick him and tell him it was a Thomas coat but now he loves it. It's got a great amount of barrier against the wind. It's really easy to zip up which is a plus because a lot of kids jackets have zipper troubles. There are cool little stretchy fleece gators that hold tight against the wrists so nothing gets in. Just a great little jacket and well worth the money. Sizing is right on with the size chart provided. Also, the colors are a great match for the pictures above.

Nice All Round Boots

La Sportiva Glacier EVO Mountaineering Boot - Men's

La Sportiva Glacier EVO Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

I picked these up as an all 'round, all purpose boot. They are set up very well with Perwanger leather which is the best stuff in my opinion. The have an incredibly durable sole with plenty of traction. I don't know that I would get into much terrain needing crampons with them but they'll do fine for everything else. They fit as La Sportiva's typically do so they're a little narrow and true to size in the length. They come fairly stiff soled but pretty comfy straight out of the box. They are a little tricky getting use to the lacing just down from the ankle flex point but once you get use to it there isn't a problem.

Good Fit......IF!

Sole Ed Viesturs Signature Edition Footbed

Sole Ed Viesturs Signature Edition Footbed

Rating for this product: 4 October 25, 2009

I picked these up for a little better fit in my Nepal Evo's. They do give you a more comfortable, more custom fit feeling. The only downside I have is that, especially in the heel, they take up too much room. Especially in my Nepal Evo's, as the heel sinks back in quite far, these didn't work. I like the idea and the feel of them so I stuck them in my Glacier Evo's for general use and they're perfect. My advice is just to be sure you have the room in your boots and especially in the heel region. Great concept though.

Nice But Add The Hydrolock

CamelBak Big Bite Valve Mouthpiece

CamelBak Big Bite Valve Mouthpiece

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

I had to replace four of these because my little girl decided to chew through them. These are as easy to use as breathing air. It's probably best to add the Hydrolock as they tend to leak with time. With the hydrolock you'll have zero leakage!

Nice Hydrolock

CamelBak Ergo Hydrolock

CamelBak Ergo Hydrolock

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This is a great concept and something to add to any bladder without a locking mechanism. Bite valves tend to wear out and leak over time. Adding this thing eliminates that problem. If you have a "little one" going around chomping on everything it can do wonders for saving you from a wet shirt and less water than you wanted when you get to your destination.

Clifbar Clif Shot Bloks - 18 Pack

Rating for this product: 4 October 25, 2009

To keep this pretty simple: I really like these as an energy alternative to food occasionally. The go down easily and don't upset my stomach. The trouble is I like the taste so I can tend to eat them faster than I should. The only complaint is the caffeine. I don't drink anything caffeinated pretty much ever so when I got these I thought I'd get a punch......nothin'. I didn't feel anything different than normal so that didn't work for me but I'll still keep rolling with them.

The Most Comfortable!

KEEN Briggs II Shoe - Men's

KEEN Briggs II Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

These are really some of the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn! The footbeds are incredibly soft and seem to form to your feet. They are typical Keen shoes so they fit wider feet but if you have narrow feet like mine you'll just have a little breathing room. The leather feels extremely durable so you don't have to worry about them falling apart. They fit true to size according to the sizing chart provided and also the same as other Keen shoes. These are really a Must Have!!!

Rugged Pants

prAna Thresher Pant - Men's

prAna Thresher Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This is an extremely rugged pair of pants! The material is much stiffer than I first thought but they're breaking in nicely and have become extremely comfortable. I don't know that I would do anything but hike or alpine climbing in them as they don't seem to move that freely with you but they're bomb proof so they should be around for a long time. The fit is similar to everything else from prAna so they run true to size according to the sizing chart provided. They do seem to be well proportioned between the size of the waist and the length of the inseam. All in all a really great pant for all 'round use.

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

Keeping this pretty simple, this lantern is quite bright and doesn't shred through battery's like crazy. Too many lights require new battery's every few hours but this thing is going on 15-18 hours of use.....on the first set of battery's. The legs are spring-loaded and make it very nimble. We're very happy with this little unit!

MSR Alpine Folding Utensils

MSR Alpine Folding Utensils

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

I picked up all three of these and they worked like a charm. They feel very durable, although I worried about the strainer breaking but no problems yet. They lock in a folding position as well as in the usable position....except the strainer. Easy to store and very easy to clean. They didn't even melt when I had them right against red-hot titanium. Really, they're a descent set of utensils for a rough kitchen.

Descent Meal

Mountain House Oriental Style Spicy Chicken - 2 Serving Entree

Mountain House Oriental Style Spicy Chicken - 2 Serving Entree

Rating for this product: 4 October 25, 2009

This was really quite a descent meal. Everything cooks up nicely and there is a great amount of flavor that comes out in the food. My only complaint is that the chicken doesn't rehydrate that well. For me it's pretty typical with most dehydrated meats. I wouldn't cook it for Thanksgiving but it was great in the BC.

Mountain House Scrambled Eggs w/ Bacon - Breakfast Entree

Mountain House Scrambled Eggs w/ Bacon - Breakfast Entree

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This was one of our favorites for breakfast. The eggs aren't bad but it's not like you're willing to pack in fresh eggs either. The key with them is to give them ample time to cook and then drain the excess water. The bacon turned out great! All in all this was a really good meal and one we'll mark as a keeper.

Descent If You're Hungry

AlpineAire Wild Tyme Turkey

AlpineAire Wild Tyme Turkey

Rating for this product: 3 October 25, 2009

This meal wasn't the best but we were really hungry so it wasn't that bad. We let it cook just a little longer to make sure the turkey completely rehydrated but it still wasn't quite there. The turkey tastes pretty dehydrated in the texture, but again it's not too bad and especially being super hungry it's okay.

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This was a complete hit with our little camp. It prepares very easily and serves plenty, although 3 of us ate all of it. It has a great texture, real berry's and just a great combination of raspberry's and chocolate. We'll use this one again, probably on every trip we do. We may bring an extra just so we don't run out though....it's really that good!

Great Desert, Maybe not Cobbler

AlpineAire Apple Blueberry Fruit Cobbler

AlpineAire Apple Blueberry Fruit Cobbler

Rating for this product: 4 October 25, 2009

Okay so maybe I was just incredibly hungry but after an 18 hour day of climbing and hiking this was a welcome treat. We added slightly less water than it called for and by the time we got around to it the instructions seemed too complicated so we just cooked it, mixed it up and ate. In my opinion it had good flavor and good texture. Definitely worth the money and the effort to prepare it. The serving size says 2 but we fed 3 people with 1 package and it was plenty.

Good Nuun

Nuun Nuun Tube - 8 Pack

Nuun Nuun Tube - 8 Pack

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2009

This is definitely a really good way to go in the hydration department. My theory is that we can't get all we need from regular foods/water so we have to take some supplements if we're trying to perform. Nuun is very easy on the stomach and with a descent taste it makes it much easier to remember to keep pounding fluids. I have only tried lemon-lime but friends say that tri-berry is really good as well.

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

My wife loves these shorts! I picked them up for her initially for just a nice hiking short but she wears them everywhere. They seem to be a little snug fitting all over but they're stretchy so it hasn't been a big deal. The stitching is also very slimming which my wife absolutely loves! In all the hikes we've done this summer, all the time sitting in the dirt with the kids, not once have they held on to a stain at all.

Backcountry.com Overhang Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

These are seriously the most comfortable pants I own! They move extremely well and don't seem to snag on much of anything....so far. The only thing I would change is the waist. The waist is just a little too big for me but I need the length, yet I don't want to wear a belt so for now I'll either wear a belt or deal with droopy drawers. Either way they're my favorite pants in the collection!

Nice Little Guy Hikers

The North Face Hedgehog WP Shoe - Boys'

The North Face Hedgehog WP Shoe - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

These have turned into some really nice little hiking shoes for my two oldest boys. Sizewise they're right on with the sizing chart. The color matches the pictures surprisingly well. Smaller sizes have elastic laces as well as standard laces so you can swap them out. Larger sizes only come with standard laces. The soles last a very, very long time. You do want to be careful when they get close to heat though. The sides of the soles melt pretty easily. They are definitely waterproof.....we're just having to get my youngest use to the fact that waterproof only means that your feet stay dry when the water level is below the top of the shoe:)

Billabong Indication T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

You don't need a lot of words for a boys shirt. My 9 year old thought it was really cool and that was about enough for me. The blue was a bit more of a bright or turquoiseish blue. It hasn't seemed to shrink more than you'd expect from the wash. You've got to be mindful of the sizing though. We got the size the chart recommended but had to return it and bump it up a size. Not a big deal though, for a cool shirt he's willing to wear:)

Quiksilver Pinballs T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Little Boys'

Rating for this product: 5 October 24, 2009

This has been a great shirt for my little guy. It fits almost exactly according to the sizing chart. This one shrank just a little in the wash but no more than you'd expect. I don't know what happened to the lighting but the red color shown above isn't even close. This is a much deeper, less florescent red.
