Good light weight hiker

Montrail Hardrock Mid '09 GTX Hiking Shoe - Men's

Montrail Hardrock Mid '09 GTX Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 May 27, 2009

These hiking shoes were pretty much what I was looking for - a fast lightweight water proof hiker. Only problem is I have a wide foot and after trying on two different sizes, I just couldn't make 'em work. Order at least a 1/2 size larger. If only Montrail would make a wider toe box like their old Continental Divide shoes.

Perfect Food Hang Bag

Sea To Summit Lightweight Dry Sack

Sea To Summit Lightweight Dry Sack

Rating for this product: 5 May 10, 2009

I use this as a food hang bag in areas populated with mice and other critters. Tight closure helps reduce food smell. I hang it on heavy fishing line to keep mice from crawling down a rope to the bag. Works great!

Serious Jacket

Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Down Parka - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Absolute Zero Down Parka - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 20, 2009

OK, this jacket is for serious mountaineering and sub zero temperatures or extreme conditions. If the temperature gets above 15 degrees, it probably will be more jacket than you need. It is extremely large and puffy. I am 6 feet tall, 160 pounds and usually wear a medium, but in this jacket the small was plenty big. Get this jacket only if you plan to be in extreme conditions. If not, it may just get left on the hanger, and that would be a shame.

Serious Backcountry Snow Shoes

MSR Denali Evo Ascent Snowshoe

MSR Denali Evo Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 February 20, 2009

If you only snowshoe on the flats in deep powder, wider longer shoes designed for float may be all you need.
But if you are looking for the most versitile, hill climbing bombproof snowshoe on the market, get these. All the local rental shops rent Denalis because they take extreme punishment and are perfect when you go from powder to crust to ice on the same trip. These guys traverse the ice covered slopes like you have crampons on.
Plastic MSR's are the only snowshoe that can change their length by adding tails, giving them unmatched versatility. Because they have solid plastic decks, they don't self clean as easily as flexible fabric decks, which under centain conditions makes them heavy with clumped snow. Keep them sprayed with silicone or vegetable spray. As far as being a little noisier, I could care less. I'm looking for performance. The telelever is a must for steep climbs.
These are serious, heavy duty backcountry snowshoes. I use them for personal use and will use them for Search and Rescue.

Hurt My Feet

Lowa Banff Pro Backpacking Boot - Men's

Lowa Banff Pro Backpacking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 2 November 24, 2008

These boots are so stiff, I was in pain every time I wore them. I tried to break them in, but every time I did I got blisters. I'm thin and have bony feet, so feet with some meat on them might fare better. For the quality of the boot, the insole is flimsy. Be sure to install a quality insole. I bought the wides, but their idea of wide is just more volume. Not a good fit for wide feet. I had to send them back.

Good quality, but too big

Patagonia Tech Neck Gaiter

Patagonia Tech Neck Gaiter

Rating for this product: 3 November 21, 2008

This neck Gaiter is a good quality product, but its sized for a football players neck. It you don't have a large neck, this gaiter may not be for you.

VASQUE SWITCHBACK GTX BOOTS

Vasque Switchback GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Vasque Switchback GTX Hiking Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 25, 2008

I wear a size 11 and found these boots to be a good fit. One of my feet is on the wide side, and although these boots are a medium width, they fit great. I am tall and thin so a snug heal pocket is a must, and these boots fit perfectly and prevent slippage. They are amazingly lightweight (perfect for my ultra light backpacking) yet the soles are stiff with good torsion control. They are not designed for heavy backpacks, but are perfect for light loads or serious hikes. I recommend these boots.
