I live at the edge of New Hampshire's White Mountain Region and keep busy volunteering with a local SAR team. I use it as an excuse to go out hiking instead of going to work! 4th year on K2 CTS

K2 Cinch CTS Snowboard Binding

K2 Cinch CTS Snowboard Binding

Rating for this product: 4 February 12, 2009

I bought mine in October 2006 (for $219!) and ride on them about 25 days a year. This is the first year I have had any problems with them. Back binding won't release easily anymore. Investigation shows some wear on the cable that might be causing it to snag when trying to open it. Toe strap on the back foot is pretty beat up from hitting the snow and ice. Lots of cosmetic wear, but really I've loved these bindings until the recent difficulties. I'm a size 15 boot, and the extra large binding handles it just fine.

Work with big feet!

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

MSR Lightning Ascent Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

30" of new champagne snow in the past two days here in NH. These floated just fine with 175 pounds on board. Just upgraded to these shoes after ten years of Tubbs. Binding is superior to Tubbs for anyone with big feet. I'm a size 14.5 and was surprised that my Koflach double boots worked at all with these snowshoes. In fact, they worked superbly! The three straps hold my big feet exactly where they need to be. Rotation is not hampered at all. Was expecting to need to cut the deck per MSR's instructions for people with big feet, but did not need to. The elevator is a nice touch. I've survived years without it, but I survived years without electric windows and air conditioning too. Now I have all three and will never give them up. Don't waste your money on other snow shoes -- buy these!

Fantastic warmth!

Outdoor Research Alti Mitten - Men's

Outdoor Research Alti Mitten - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 29, 2008

I have last year's version of these mitts. I tried on this year's at a local shop and discovered that they've fixed the problem with extra large! My hand measurements are exactly on the line between large and extra large according to OR info. I found the large too small and the extra large too big (last year). This year, the extra large is perfect. As for the guy who asked about people with Raynaud's Syndrome, I don't have it (at least not to my knowledge!) but my hands get awfully cold when others don't. These mittens have solved that problem. In fact, I can't wear them above 10 degrees or my hands sweat. So far, coldest I've worn them is minus 10 with a 45 mph wind, exposed above treeline for about an hour. Fingers were toasty warm!

Versatile jacket

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

Mountain Hardwear WindStopper Tech Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 29, 2008

I agree with comments that this coat is not as warm as straight fleece. However, it is durable, and a great layer when working hard in cold weather. Definitely blocks wind, and zip up collar keeps your warm too. Don't think of it as water repellent, think of it as snow repellent -- if you're not too hot. In anything but a very light sprinkle, I switch to raingear or hard shell.

Great pants for winter hiking.

Mountain Hardwear Makalu Pant - Men's

Mountain Hardwear Makalu Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 December 29, 2008

I wear these down to zero with expedition weight long winter underwear and get terrific perspiration transfer on the uphills. Hardshell over them once at treeline makes me feel like I'm wearing down pants -- ok, a bit of an exaggeration, but they work pretty well.

6'3" guy owned 2650 & 3100

Kelty Redwing Backpack - 2650-3100 cu in

Kelty Redwing Backpack - 2650-3100 cu in

Rating for this product: 4 November 8, 2008

I loved the size of the 2650, but it just didn't fit my tall frame comfortably. Switched to the 3100 and it fit my frame very well. But if you truly filled it to capacity, it didn't ride too well. If you really need this much space, I would recommend going with something else.

Warm and good support

Vans Hifax Snowboard Boot - Men's

Vans Hifax Snowboard Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 25, 2008

My first pair of new boots in years, so anything would feel good. I noticed right away how much warmer these were than my old pair of Burtons. Good inner lacing holds foot comfortably; outer lacing finishes the job. Great boot -- not super stiff, but definitely handles my Burton Baron ES on all terrain.

Super warm and well made

Outdoor Research Alti Mitt - Men's

Outdoor Research Alti Mitt - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 17, 2008

My hands tend to get cold, especially when sitting around. I keep these in my pack for those down times and when above treeline in the White Mountains of NH on cold and windy traverses. They are as warm as you would expect for a high altitde mitten. I wear them with a liner, and they are easy to get on/off without pulling the liner out too. Don't expect to do much with your hands while wearing these, other than holding a rope. Even a bit hard to hold ski poles. My hand measurements were right on the edge between large and extra large. Seems a bit big and I wonder if the large would have seemed a bit small. Wish they had one more cinch strap over the top of the hand, but that's just nit picking, because these are warm and well made mittens.
