December 8, 2008

No disrespect, but kili and denali are 2 different animals... Does anyone have experience with this in harsh conditions?

Marmot Thor 3-Person 4-Season Tent

December 8, 2008

I saw in the description that this tent is designed for denali (where good tents go... to die) is this tent really up for denali in a storm? I like this tent because it is about 100$ cheaper than most the other ones i'm looking at, and i like marmot, but the thing that worries me is that it is 100$ cheaper... Is it still capable of surviving anything (minus axes, crampons and shovels)?

It refuses to die

MSR WhisperLite Stove

MSR WhisperLite Stove

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2008

I have used this one for the last 8 years or so... I don't ever really maintain it, Don't treat it with respect, left it in rain, droped it down a cliff (whoops), have had it completly submerged, left it in a car in the middle of a desert (probably not safe, but whatever), had it burried in a drift, draged away by a racoon, and yet it is still going strong. This stove has had a miserable life, but outside of some discoloration of the metal this thing is still going strong. The only problem I have had with it is that at about 13,500 feet it doesn't seem to work as well, and it absolutly refuses to die so I can't get a newer model... So if you are like me and like to get new stuff every ONCE in a while.... this stove is NOT for you, but if you want something that absolutely will not fail... look no further...

Climb easy...easier

MSR Lightning Snowshoe

MSR Lightning Snowshoe

Rating for this product: 5 November 21, 2008

These are light, have effective crampons, and still float. I actually like the binding system... It is simple so harder to break. The straping system is the same way... I wear mountaineering boots with these so i can pretty much just tighten these as tight as i want em....

Black Diamond Sabretooth Pro Crampon

November 2, 2008

I use neumatic style crampons with AT boots... so I would say yes... Just tighten up a bit. and make sure it gets into your wells... But heck ya they'll hold. That being said... this will probably be the next pair of crampons i will buy!

LEKI Thermolite Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

LEKI Thermolite Antishock Trekking Poles - 1 Pair

Rating for this product: 2 October 26, 2008

I have had to get 2 replacement parts now... and am going to have to call Leki today to get my third in... These are great because they have a really low weight, but honestly I would rather carry something a bit heavier. If nothing else Leki has been nice to me about fixing these poles, but honestly I would rather not have to call them period. If you are using this for light hikes... they'd probably work... If you want to use them for extensive back packing, long aproaches and snow fields. Get something a bit tougher...

Keeps the wet cold stuff on the outside

Marmot Randonnee Pant - Men's

Marmot Randonnee Pant - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 October 25, 2008

If you are looking for something to keep the snow outside of your pants... I highly recomend these. I have used them now for Skiing and Ice Climbing I had to scramble through rocks, hit trees, and Even accidently got a little "wild" with my ice axe;however, these pants still are seemless and I have not had a problem with durability. The Side pocket side zip tend to look the same and i would recomend caution expecially if you didn't feel like wearing a base layer... Woops... Bottom line if you want a good shell these are not a bad choice and I am happy with mine.

Black Diamond Wired Hex Set #4-10

August 3, 2008

They are great, i have been using them for a while and they are great, but with that being said if you are looking for something cheaper there are alot of people who make them. Also there hexes, the technology has kind of "cruxed" so to speak. The real thing you want to look at is do you want your hexes wired or slung?

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 12, 2008

I was worried about this jacket's construction, but after 3 days of bushwhacking in a downpour I am still dry, and my jacket is still in great shape. I am yet again impressed with marmot.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

June 11, 2008

I would wear a fleece under it in cold weather. It is a very light shell keeps the rain off, but in cold weather you will want something under it...
