Super lofty, super price, slightly slender

Kelty Light Year Sleeping Bag: 25 Degree Down - Women's

Kelty Light Year Sleeping Bag: 25 Degree Down - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 February 5, 2008

This is a great down bag with a good loft to it. Due to the down, the weight of it was one of the biggest factors as to why I went with this.. That and as previously mentioned, the zipper in the toe box! This is a super sleeping bag overall. Positives are: Weight is perfect for toting on your back wherever; lofty, lofty, lofty, comes with a nice compression sack and a storage sack; great price for the features; dual cord locks around the head to pull up and tighten around you at night; lovely "designer" style fabric on the inside of zipper to keep it stiff and protect drafting... My only "issues" with it are as follows: It is a bit slender in the tapering overall. I am blessed with not being a small size 2 and am more "average" and am also a side sleeper so I tend to toss around a bit. Not alot of room to do that in this without ending up with the bottom on the top of you; the rating of 25 as in most bags, in my opinion, is not truly 25. I was in 36 degrees and was cold! I even had a fleece liner inside with 2 pairs of socks on and had to place my coat over my feet which though always tend to be a bit cold. And the last thing I would wish in my "dream bag" would be to have a sleeve sewn in the bottom like the Big Agnes bags for my sleep pad to slip in so I can toss and turn without ending up with the bottom on the top and vice versa. But still, overall, this is a great value, especially if you want a down-filled bag! And oh, the color is very pretty too :) Hope this helps and happy sleeping!

Perfect Tent with a well thought out design

Kelty Gunnison 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Kelty Gunnison 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 February 5, 2008

When it was time to purchase a new 2-man tent, I researched and researched. We wanted one that wouldn't break our budget, but also that had 2 doors so when nature calls in the middle of the night, we wouldn't have to roll, climb and smother the other person in the tent to get out. I was surprised at how few there are with just that. We wanted a fly and vestibules to store boots too. It quickly came down to this one.
So, my husband and I have this 2 person tent and love it. We have used it most recently the past 2 times in the desert during January where it gets cold. It was in the mid 30's inside our tent and despite the frost outside, on all nights (except one night), we did not have a condensation issue. Mind you, this is not a 4 season tent, so we feel overall this is a great one to be able to be out in that weather and still stay warm.
It is a bit narrow but the length helps to make up for it. It isn't an awkward shape, so two people can be side by side and it has dual doors that are super easy to get in and out of too. The fly overhead is designed to really help with the condensation while also providing a plastic window to see out and watch the stars up in the sky, so you don't feel so confined inside like in a tight dark closet. Oh, also really like the little things, like a hammock in the ceiling to hold smaller items like a flashlight, watch and things you don't want to step on or roll over onto and break! There are pouches on the walls too at the top and bottom to help with holding stuff too. This tent is super easy to set up with the color coded, light weight poles and clips and even the clips for the fly are color coded so you don't have to keep rotating the fly to figure out which corner clips in where to align the door to the vestibule. Just a super, lightweight tent with a very reasonable price! We are very pleased with this purchase and enjoy the details put into this tent.

Sadly disappointed

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Ether Thermo 6 Sleeping Pad - Women's

Pacific Outdoor Equipment Ether Thermo 6 Sleeping Pad - Women's

Rating for this product: 2 February 4, 2008

First, I have to start off with having had high expectations for the women's version of this sleep pad. I researched them all, and found for the weight (looking for a light one to pack on my back) and the big key of more insulation in the feet, I was seriously impressed with finding out about this product.
I shopped around for the best price, got it, and we off went to go backpacking. It was late January, early February so it was a bit cold out in the desert at night. But I was feeling pretty confident that it would keep me warmer and definitely more comfortable than the Big Agnes one I have since this one is specific for women. Well, I wanted my feet warmer than the last time and this was supposed to be the answer! Hmmm, nope. Hate to say it, but I was not a happy camper, no pun intended!

I could not tell a difference in the insulation and it is 2" thick, or should I say thin, compared to the Big Agnes having 2.5" with about the same weight. The temp inside our tent on both times was within tenths of degrees so I feel confident in my overview and the 1/2 inch of height to me made a big difference. Mind you, while I am short, I am not a petite size 2 and I woke up stiff in my low back (never had that with my Big Agnes)... so while I am sure there are women that will love this, I cannot say I did.

I am pushing 40 and my back can't take me sleeping on the "floor", and this one seemed either too full and I was rolling off the top, or too thin with no support. Then of course, I didn't feel the special added feet insulation in this one as I had hoped and this was even with a blue thin pad underneath it all to help with the cold!

Guess this will be one that our kids with strong backs and nimble, limber youth will have to use in the warmer months. But the concept of it sounds great... I just want my Big Agnes insulated pad back. Hope this helps you and happy sleeping !

Rating for this product: 2 February 4, 2008

I made a boo boo in my earlier review, I stated it was 2 inches... it is not. It is also 2.5 inches thick; however, it just doesn't feel the as "lofty" as my other one despite the same manufacturers stated thickness. Sorry for the misinformation.
