Super comfort

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Big Agnes Insulated Air Core Sleeping Pad - Rectangular

Rating for this product: 5 July 14, 2009

Used this pad for the first time a few weeks ago. Easy to blow up (though not self-inflating), and MUCH more comfortable than my standard thermarest. Also packs much smaller, and seems pretty durable. A great upgrade for thermarest users.

Super comfy

Patagonia Footwear Boaris Shoe - Men's

Patagonia Footwear Boaris Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 29, 2009

This is my second pair of Patagonia shoes (the other was the Bagley), and I've liked them both. They are well made from great materials, and very comfortable. The Boaris has considerably more cushioning than the Bagley and so is better for being on your feet all day. The sole has enough traction for hikes on dirt trails.

Great design, terrible material

Black Diamond Quantum 65 Pack - 3845-3967cu in

Black Diamond Quantum 65 Pack - 3845-3967cu in

Rating for this product: 2 April 1, 2009

I agree with the other reviewer--this pack is extremely well designed for alpine climbing, but the fabric is much to flimsy for serious trips. I ordered this back for climbing and skiing this spring and summer, and took it out for the first time for a three day backcountry ski trip last weekend. Since I was staying at a lodge, the pack wasn't super heavily loaded--probably around 40lbs, but I could see strain on material around the seams near the bottom of the pack. There's no way the fabric near the sewing was going to hold up under heavier loads and repeated use. Also, in the course of three days, I managed to put two small tears in the pack bag--not from ice axes or crampons (didn't bring 'em), or from ski edges (wrong location), but just abrasion on rocks and trees. If you tried to haul this pack I imagine it would be in tatters almost immediately. I hope BD will remake the pack with a better fabric, because the size, fit, weight, and features make it perfect for alpine climbing.

Great softshell for skiing

Patagonia Ascensionist Softshell Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Ascensionist Softshell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 17, 2009

Got this for resort and backcountry skiing. Hardshells aren't breathable enough for me unless it is very cold (20s or lower). This is my second softshell, and it has a better cut than the first one--full coverage down to the hips and no constriction in the shoulders (I'm 5'10, 165lbs). It's very breathable (I kept it on over mid-weight poly-pro and a dri-clime windshirt for most of the day during a 10 mile cross-country ski day in 35 degree weather). It did a good job of shedding the inch or two of wet snow that fell. My only minor complaint is that big gusts of wind can get through it when on the ski lift, but I probably wasn't wearing enough layers underneath. The hoods rolls up comfortably. Overall the best softshell jacket I've tried for skiing.

Warm, light, and fragile

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Patagonia Down Sweater Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 17, 2009

I love this jacket, but wish the material was a little stronger. It's great how little space it takes in the pack given how cozy it is, but more than once it's stayed in the pack because I was worried about shredding it. On a cool morning in joshua tree I wore it while leading a warm-up climb, which ended up being two grades harder because I had to keep the jacket away from the razor sharp granite. I end up wearing it more in town than in the backcountry.
